I am sick of the media pandering to 'celebrities' by giving them media exposure. To be fair to the media they haven't got much else to report on. And as for some of the celebrities giving out isolation advice and then getting caught out by going against the advice. ...... I've run out of words. Yet another celebrity interview has popped up on BBC, so I protested by changing channels. Pointless, I know but I felt better. Lol

@@freebirdh7033 This video being cited wasn't "the media". Like it or not, these famous people you so loathe are role models and inspirations for other people, and if they can get a message across of being safe that gets someone to listen about social distancing, then by all means, let them. No one is forcing you to be in love with anyone famous, and the stingy attitude.. not at all helpful or productive. Food for thought... Stay safe!

I started using a thick beach towel on my "dirty" side. Once the garbage is removed I put the towel directly in my washing machine then wash my hands. It has helped reduce the amount of home cleansers I use so they last longer and I don't have to worry about running out.

Hi Dr Jeff, just thought i'd share what I do on the other side of this situation.I'm a delivery driver and I'm very concerned about the packages I deliver being contaminated before I pick them up, not knowing how many hands they have been through before I collect them.
I treat the back of my van as "dirty"as you say, so all the parcels, even envelopes go in there. I keep a spray bottle of disinfectant in the back of the van, so after each delivery, I wipe down the door handle, then disinfect my keys, then my phone , which we use to record via photo geo-taging for each delivery.
Finally, I use sanitizer to disinfect my hands before getting in the van.
This way it keeps the cabin area clean, and i don't (hopefully) introduce the virus into the cab. Hope this helps

So we have begun doing is saving all of my bags from snacks that Have eaten already, and purchase long ago let's say potato chips bags, or those huge tortilla chip , and I reuse them to cover the entire forearm and hand to grab big things because I don't want to keep using my latex gloves, might be a shortage of them at some point.
This might sound absurd but, I even use the wrapping around paper towels, or any old packaging that I have left from bed sheets etc. again these are all wrapping of some sort from last year. But helps a lot when you really need to quickly grab the door and you don't know if you want to I or will be able towash your hands again before you enter somewhere.

Having worked in the service/food industry I would recommend heating that pizza up the microwave or oven. People who make food have a hard job, sweating, little time to wash hands between orders and just being human means there is likely some contamination on every food product that is prepared. Personally, I'm not ordering food delivery at this time.

Quick tip: When washing your hands, if you don't have a sink that makes turning the water on without your hands easy, just soap the faucet handle while washing your hands to get rid of any contamination.
We are fighting our against our instincts to be friendly and kind (I hope we have those instincts!) but we have to put safety and health first. My husband had to make a trip out yesterday and at the grocery someone stepped near him to reach the deli counter. My husband immediately stepped back 6 feet and the man looked offended. Then realization hit and several emotions flashed across his face before he murmured "Sorry." While his first instinct was to wonder why my husband was being rude, he quickly realized that my husband was protecting the health of both of them. So keep doing what you need to do.
Thanks again for your videos, Dr Jeff. This is helping all of us and is really appreciated.

Here's a technique that I used in the lab and which is helpful at home now: handle new objects with my left hand, keeping my (dominant) right hand clean. This makes it a lot easier to do things like open doors and turn on the faucet or a light switch. It also means that, when I'm away from home and I need my wallet or keys, I can touch them without contaminating my pockets.

I have one more thing I wanted to mention that could help many people. I realize we all want to stay informed on this thing but PLEASE, PLEASE for your own mental health limit your news about this thing to an hour or less a day will help you maintain some sanity. Along with being a former nurse I’ve also worked in the mental health field, and I’ve been hearing of people binge watching the coverage of this pandemic. It is NOT good for your state of mind. I’ve seen people becoming depressed, obsessed, and thinking they were sick when they really were not.
Many of these people will go to hospitals or doctors offices needlessly thus increasing their chance of exposure and/or taking up the time of medical professionals that could be used to treat patients that are really sick. So PLEASE EVERYONE take a break, go out in the sun (vitamin D is good for the Immune system), watch cooking, sports, or funny videos on You Tube. Just avoid to much of the news on this thing, because as we have seen a lot of the info coming out could be false. So everyone stay SAFE and SANE during thing thing. BLESS YOU ALL.😞🙏

For me, it's been an awareness that for the first time in my life.. others aren't labelling me a "germaphobe" as I already did most of this. I hope that my children and grandchildren are benefitting from the very things they were taught. Take time away from ALL devices, including television to simply breath, read a book, listen to music and know.. ALL will be well. Stay Safe. Dear Dr. VW Thanks for sharing!❤️
In Airline industry, “Mental Training” is highly recommended, not only for emergency, but also good for normal operation, you may even benefit from that for your daily life, especially during this dramatic COVID19 period.
Take several minutes, close your eyes, mentally go through every step, every details of the scenarios you may encounter.
Supermarket shopping, at Bank, take care of Post or Home Delivery, in side elevator, use public transportation, at airport, in airplane...etc. Anything you need to face or handle day by day.
Think it over, make wise decisions step ahead, figure out obvious and hidden risks or dangers, then format your own check list and procedures, DO rely on it and stick to it.
The more clear picture you have in mind, the better care and performance you will carry.
The Virus is tricky, we need to be smarter!
Blessing! Stay healthy! Stay Happy! 💪💪💪

I just brought a piece of chalk into the garage so I can mark all the packages with the day off the week received so I can keep better track. :) Also we are using an old pair of shoes to play in the backyard to try to minimize the possibility of tracking germs into the backyard from our walks with the dog. Stay safe everyone! And thank you, Doctor, for these great videos!! Your voice and presentation are very calming to me!!

I've started bartering with our neighborhood forum. You can p/u and drop off needed items at addresses, if you're controlled and careful and, considering the item can be sanitized. If you put the sanitized item in a sealed bag, then sanitize the bag, the recipient can sanitize, again before opening, and after, then discard bag. It beats money and helps with a much-needed exchange.

Years and years before this I have always removed my shoes at the door before entering my house. This is a very Asian and European tradition that I picked up decades ago. The only addition now in the middle of this C19 crisis is I have a very shallow Pan like the depth of a baking Pan outside my garage door when the door that leads from my garage to my house. I have a little cloth placed over that Pan and I have a bottle of disinfectant next to that Pan. Whenever I come in I pour some disinfectant over the cloth that is in that Pan and let it soak and then when I remove my shoes I remove my shoes and placed them in that Pan so that the soles of the shoes sit in that disinfectant. I leave them there for an hour or maybe even and the towel has soaked up all the disinfectant, Then I remove them and place them in the usual spot just outside the garage or in from changing shoes that's the time I take them and put them in my closet to change them.

Non-perishables and small packages go straight into a bin, and we put a note on top of it with the date when it will be safe to open. Hope that helps someone else in a similar situation. Packages
We were spraying with disinfectant and leaving in sun for the day. After which initially leaving at entry way ( anyone in apts can do same ), now we leave in garage for a week.
    For take-out,
We put a sign in window leave at door and put a already bleach sprayed and dried tip under the mat. We take bleach sprayed or soap paper towel and wipe food packaging outside, bring in food , then empty into content into large pans, then immediately discard packaging. I've ordered takeout once in past month to minimize risk.
    Groceries
Using good Doc's method with all food prior to putting away . I'm cleaning packaged items in garage.
I dump them out onto drop cloth of some sort and have a few reusable big shopping bags where cleaned items go to bring into house.

Some people say the virus can live up to 9 days on a surface. So, I put non parishable food in a box and left it alone for over 9 days. I have also sprayed my groceries with alcohol and then walked away from them to allow the alcohol to dry on its own. I shopped in bulk the first week of March. This allowed me to not touch any of it for over a month. I'm staying well in total isolation at home having phone conferences with my congregation where over 100 of us meet every week on Zoom!!! Look forward to more of your videos!! 🤗❤️

We have decided to leave non-perishable groceries in the car as long as possible, being mindful of outside temperature. Things that cannot be wiped down are left to sit for a few days in a box near the door out of the way. Parcels and other stuff sits in a sun-flooded room for 1-2 days, and any plastic on it gets sprayed by alcohol and left to dry.

The box is either placed in garage for 3 days or opened to retrieve item (cardboard left by recycling bin). The inside item is set aside for three days or wiped clean with bleach-water mixture. For perishables or expensive items, the entire cardboard box is sprayed prior to bringing inside for opening.

The effects of microwaving vary among nutrients and even different foods (1). However, microwave heating does increase the oxidation of cholesterol more than some other cooking methods (2). While people may have different opinions on the health effects of dietary cholesterol, oxidized dietary cholesterol seems like something to avoid if at all possible (3). Under normal circumstances I would not microwave anything with cheese in it, but in this situation I would microwave the pizza. { ...but I don't eat pizza anyway - both dairy and wheat are inflammatory and I suspect gliadin (a component of gluten) may alter certain aspects of immune function in a particularly unfavorable way as relates to this disease, but that's just speculation on my part... }

I have what I call the "germ pile" in my Dining Room (we - 2 guys - never eat in our Dining Room - it's a hobby room). It's an area of the house that NEVER gets rustled. The mail sits there for 3 days, and non-perishable grocery packages/boxes will sit there for almost a week until I need them. I'm giving this virus plenty of time to die on things before I touch them again...and even then, I'm washing my hands immediately after touching them.

When we order a pizza, we preheat the oven to lowest setting, around 170°. We then put the whole box with the pizza in there for 5 min. 130° kills and degrades the virus quickly. Plus it heats the pizza back up a little bit. The inside of the box should be fine if the pizza was put in there hot.

My husband and I are going out only for food every two weeks. After seeing the Dr's previous video on sanitizing groceries, here is our aseptic routine:
We place the groceries on the dirty side of our kitchen table which has scotch tape separating the two sides. We wipe all of our groceries and place them on the clean side. After washing down the purchases, we strip out of our clothes and put them into the washer and leave the "shopping " shoes either on the porch or in a designated spot inside the home until ready to go out again. We use bleach soln to wipe down all surfaces and anything we touched coming into the house, then use the bleach solution to mop the floor. Then go shower.
We also retrieve the mail and bring into the home daily. It sits on an unused desk for between 24 hours-3 days before opening. There is a small pile of mail for each day.
We have used the aseptic technique for pizza carryout, however, I like the comment about placing the entire pizza box into the oven at the lowest setting for 5 minutes. I will not be doing that with styrofoam containers since they leach carcinogens (styrene) into the food.

Being a bit of a germaphobe already, I have always been in the habit of using a sanitizing wipe to wipe down things like jars and bottles that go in my fridge and thoroughly washing all fruits and vegetables, whether or not they have a peel like a banana. However, once this pandemic started, everything that comes into our home gets sanitized.
We live in a small NYC apartment and have only one 24x24 (inches) counter so your clean counter technique doesn’t work for us. Instead, we open the garbage can and my husband holds each bag of groceries while I use a sanitizing wipe in each hand to take each item out and clean it and put it away. As each bag is emptied my husband puts the bag in the garbage and gets the next bag and we empty that one and so on until we’re done. This way, his hands are “dirty” and mine stay clean. As soon as the wipes start to dry out, I get new ones.
We have a double sink so anything that can be washed with soap and water like cans or jars goes in one side of the sink to wash later so that we can get refrigerated, frozen and produce items done first. Speaking of produce, all vegetables and fruits go in the other side of the sink filled with water and a couple of drops of dish soap. I know people worry about soap residue on produce, but we rinse well and have decided the slight chance of any soap residue is nothing compared to Covid-19 contamination.
I’m extremely wary of ordering in food like pizza because I don’t know if everyone who may be involved in preparing/packaging the food are wearing gloves and masks. What if they aren’t and they cough/sneeze near the food? I would think a warm, moist environment like take out food would be a perfect medium to transport the virus without degradation. We’re told it’s not foodborne, but they also said it wasn’t airborne either and they’ve backtracked on that now. We have only gotten a pizza once and fried chicken another time. The pizza went on a pizza baking sheet and into the oven to kill any germs that might’ve gotten on it, handling the box the same way you do. The chicken went in the microwave. Honestly, I don’t know if the microwave was the right choice and in hindsight I would put it in the oven too.
We bring mail in daily and drop it on the seat of my Rollator (I’m disabled) by the front door until I’m ready to open it later. When I open it, I use a letter opener to open the envelope and then I drop the contents on our desk. The dirty outer envelope goes straight into our recycling container. We open each piece of mail this way. When I’m done, I use a sanitizing wipe on my Rollator and I wash my hands and the letter opener. Then I can sort through the mail and use paper clips to keep pages/return envelopes together.
Thank you for the great videos you’re making. I think it helps a lot of people who might not realize the best way to keep from bringing Covid-19 into their homes.
I suggest that at least once per day you take sanitizing wipes and hit every light switch and doorknob, including closets, and drawer and cabinet pulls, faucets, refrigerator/freezer/microwave/stove/oven pulls and controls, and remote controls. When your cleaning your phone, don’t forget your headphones and charge cords. Basically anywhere you touch to open or operator something need to be wiped down.

We need to understand that we don't have to be perfect, we just need to mitigate the risks. If the technique was too stressful to apply, people wouldn't even try it and it would defeat the purpose. Thanks, Jeff!

      @cindy846 4 роки тому

@@ColoringPassion913 Sure :) And everybody has their own tolerance to risk and/or personal risk factors, so that also comes into play. For us, I put up a show on my phone and I take the time to wipe everything down because it's too nerve-wracking for me to think all the time about cross-contamination. So I only deal with it once every other week when receiving our groceries, then we can grab the pack of cheese and just eat it without re-washing anything and that way I also know my counters stay clean and so on. But it does take more time than usual!!

Thank you Dr VanWingen for your videos. I started incorporating what you suggested for food. I have a garage and leave things there for a while. My tip for mail is that when we pick up mail we leave it in a designated area in the garage for about a week - I don't touch or open it. Usually bills come a bit early. If I were to see something urgent I'll pick it up but otherwise I leave it and then after the week bring it in and process. We also have an "outside shoe" area we designated where all of our footwear is left so that we don't bring anything else further into the garage and then the home.
