Gf: “You have been watching so much of those chess videos lately, isn’t that kind of pointless. I think you should concentrate on more serious stuff” Me: “Yeah, I mean, it may seem pointless, but let’s just be honest: if someone comes into your house at night, points a gun at our heads and screams «you better tell me, how much draws did Petrosian have in the 1959 Candidates, or I’ll shoot you», I’ll be the hero of the situation”
What an extraordinary display of chess prowess. Two supremely skilled players displaying every skill known to man over the board : Far sighted positional maneuvering combined with intricate tactic. What a great game...!
I showed it to my wife after she said that she never understood why there would be calculating in chess as the point is just to grab pieces according to her. When she had seen a couple of minutes she was kinda perplexed :)
I love Tal moves, regardless of who makes them. Wish I could do that. Still playing through Bronstein's book on the 1953 Zurich tournament. Good games there as well.
One of the problems with your videos, at the end I think I am smarter now and I understand chess. Because then I get fired up to play online only to find out I’m still chess-stupid.
Watching a GM game and hoping it will make you better (if you aren't also a GM) is like watching Stephen Hawkins solve a complicated equation, full of symbols and variables you don't know the meaning of, and expecting that to help you on your next basic physics test.
agadmator's Chess Channel I only disagree a little because of one thing... all the brilliant moves exhibited here and your wonderful additional analysis has taught me to beware the innocuous positions. I am getting caught less out of the blue. I can’t always dodge it but at least I see it coming.
Great to see Oscar Panno's board in the back of the photo! Completely irrelevant to many of you, but to get across great argentinian players (even when it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic) is always nice for their countrymen!
The photos are awesome in your Videos Agadmator, it reminds me of a forgotten time when chessplayer still was wearing pants while playing. Today it is just click click click and no time to unzip!
It's kinda neat when Agad asked what you would play if you were Keres, I would've played exactly what he did. It didn't work for him, but hey, if you put me in this game for that one move, Keres would've liked my move lol.
Very impressive game! Actually, to the best of my knowledge, the only two chess players ever to be featured on a banknote (Keres on Estonia's 5 Krooni 1992 and Petrosian on Armenia's 2018 2000 Dram)!
I was in the New York Open in 1983. I shook hands with Sammy Reshevsky, Reuben Fine and Pal Benko, thus putting me one level of separation from every world champion from Lasker to Kasparov.
People talk about Tal doing this. But actually there's a famous quote by a GM that is "When Tal sacrifice a piece you accept, but when Petrosian sacrifice a piece you resign." Petrosion sacrifices and caculation were out of this world.
I found the first "Tal" move, but not the correct follow up. I wanted to recapture with the other rook, not the pawn and follow up by pushing the h pawn. I think I still get a strong attack that way, but I'm not sure it's as good. Did not find the Q sac leading to mate because I have an aversion to parting with the lady. In fact, after 50 years of playing and many beautiful combinations, I have never sacrificed my Queen! Need to work on that one.
Alexander Kotov and Mikhail Yudovich, the late authors of the popular book "Soviet Chess School" wrote on Iron Tigran: "... combinative play has never been to alien to Tigran Petrsosyan... when you play with him you realize that all your plans are simply disrupted...". This game by the two chess masters (sorry monsters) is a proof for it.
opinions on 18. Nd6? i'm assuming black would capture with e pawn, white would then capture that pawn with the queen, exchanging the knight for the 2 center pawns while keeping the black knight on c6 pinned for capture next move. in total going 2 pawns up, or not?
14:05 Antonio: "Black has checkmate in 5 moves" Inner monologue: "I can see mate in 3, mate in 4 (the last one you showed). Why can't I see the mate in 5? There is a better defense than the one I saw, right? There has to be."
It's still checkmate in 5 moves as agadmator said but he forgot to show how, i guess anyway its clearly that the black Queen takes the white queen that means it's game over
of course you cannot capture the piece cos if you do the queen b4 and checkmate in five moves. yeah...... i knew that. of course I did. hehe love these videos man. i hope to one day get to a good enough level to of course know why I cannot capture that poisoned pawn.
I have to be missing something but I'm not sure what; at 5:06 why did keres not take the knight with the E3 bishop? After pawn takes queen takes and you win a pawn right? Because if black takes your knight on b5 then you can take again with queen, trade queens and rooks and still retain a pawn edge right? Black doesn't seem to have anything with the G7 bishop, moving it to h6 at any point during that seems like a false threat because it's easily avoided. What am I missing or what was he going for with the line he eventually played?
I read Mikhail Botvinnik quote once it said: If Tal sacrifice a piece take it, If Petrosian sacrifice a piece don't take it... anyone knows why he said that?
He said that when Tal sacrifice a piece he might sacrify anothe and then another so you might be fine, but when Petrosian sacrify you might as well resign because Petrosian was famous for his defence and safe games, so much so that he was ridiculed by soviets for a period where he had only draws..
Just an idea if @14:53 bishop can block the check if pawn captures bishop - queen captures pawn - queen captures queen than knight captures queen still playable with two rooks.
By the end it would also have been possible for Keres to block the queens attack with the knight or the bishop, so that an immediate checkmate would not have been possible. He would have lost the queen, though.
For the first time I can call myself an excellent player and not just someone who enjoys the show! Agadmator may be using the word excellent player a bit loosely on this one...but I'll take it.
You know what, I didn't even pause it. Heck I could even come up with the checkmate until further pawn pushing on g and h. ¿ A rook sacrafice? I Need More Beer.

You can't outTal Tal. That was hilarious :D
Even Tal couldn't out-Tal Tal.
@@oissevonos2056 That's quite a fact. Wow! I was always in awe at how many times Korchnoi made it to the candidates.

@Oissev Onos I'm sure he meant many but autocorrected.
What an extraordinary display of chess prowess. Two supremely skilled players displaying every skill known to man over the board : Far sighted positional maneuvering combined with intricate tactic. What a great game...!
I finished an old video of yours and was getting ready to watch another when this came up with perfect timing. Made me smile.
My favourite agadmator videos are the ones where we get the opportunity to pause the video's multiple times, mark of true quality.
This is definitely one of the best games I have seen...quite involving with no major blunders
I showed the Ivanchuk interview to my girlfriend... She was speechless. :D
I showed it to my wife after she said that she never understood why there would be calculating in chess as the point is just to grab pieces according to her. When she had seen a couple of minutes she was kinda perplexed :)

That Zurich T. has several games that have made Top 100 games of all times lists.

My videos will not make you a better player. They can only get you interested enough to actually start learning on your own :)
James Tickle iv never heard a more true statement XDXD
agadmator's Chess Channel your videos have definitely taught me about basic necessities. Like importance of ideas, endgames, and tactics

18 minutes of agadmator. My day couldn’t get any better !
Thanks! Great channel and games!! The Ivanchuk interview was fantastic!! Big thanks for tip!!

This has got to be one of my favorite games! Thanks for the upload, fifth time watching it.
"It's more of a Tal move.."
Immediately starts thinking of how I can sacrifice my queen

I see you like classic Martial Arts films as well.
I think that was the pun of the day for the game on chessgames.com
it is incredible how such a "safe looking" position can be opened up with some smart sacrifices...

Why am I always the one who wants to ENJOY THE SHOW ?
I was in the New York Open in 1983. I shook hands with Sammy Reshevsky, Reuben Fine and Pal Benko, thus putting me one level of separation from every world champion from Lasker to Kasparov.
PS. It didn't improve my game a whit, sadly.

You can't out-Tal Tal. Genius.
1959 Candidates? Never heard of it. :)
@15:16 why did white didn’t block the check with light square bishop ?
Immediate checkmate with qxf1
opinions on 18. Nd6? i'm assuming black would capture with e pawn, white would then capture that pawn with the queen, exchanging the knight for the 2 center pawns while keeping the black knight on c6 pinned for capture next move. in total going 2 pawns up, or not?

Wow I calculated all 3 pause the video today!
love your videos Bro

Antonio: "Black has checkmate in 5 moves"
Inner monologue:
"I can see mate in 3, mate in 4 (the last one you showed).
Why can't I see the mate in 5? There is a better defense than the one I saw, right? There has to be."
Bishop moves to f3
Amazing game!
What species is your dog? I can see him on your background settings. :]
At 15:06 you can move the bishop and block the queen instead
It's still checkmate in 5 moves as agadmator said but he forgot to show how, i guess anyway its clearly that the black Queen takes the white queen that means it's game over
Tnx for the video's 😁
How weird would feel Keres being atack by Petrosian...
of course you cannot capture the piece cos if you do the queen b4 and checkmate in five moves. yeah...... i knew that. of course I did. hehe
love these videos man. i hope to one day get to a good enough level to of course know why I cannot capture that poisoned pawn.

Damn, I was rooting for Keres...
This is the second time I found the winning move. Still losing against the AI on my phone. ;)
Great game.
I have to be missing something but I'm not sure what; at 5:06 why did keres not take the knight with the E3 bishop? After pawn takes queen takes and you win a pawn right? What am I missing or what was he going for with the line he eventually played?
Because black Bishop will take b5 Knight and the black bishop will be targeted by pawn and rook then
I mean white he will not win any pawn and he will lose his good attacking knight, that's why he tried to save it first
Sorry that i make 11 months to answer :) But don't worry i did not checked this move for the last 11 months, i just see it today for first time :)
nice photo
This is the first time that I found the winning move!!!!!!!
I read Mikhail Botvinnik quote once it said: If Tal sacrifice a piece take it, If Petrosian sacrifice a piece don't take it... anyone knows why he said that?
Because you never want tal to be up a peice is my guess more room for sacrifices
He said that when Tal sacrifice a piece he might sacrify anothe and then another so you might be fine, but when Petrosian sacrify you might as well resign because Petrosian was famous for his defence and safe games, so much so that he was ridiculed by soviets for a period where he had only draws..
Mikail Botvinnik clearly did not understand Tal's brilliance. Botvinnik's blunder ;)
bishop/knight to f3 blocking check from the queen is not checkmate in 4? but you lose the queen though
Just an idea if @14:53 bishop can block the check if pawn captures bishop - queen captures pawn - queen captures queen than knight captures queen still playable with two rooks.
If you blocked with the bishop, the black queen would just capture your queen, and next move there is no stopping rh1 checkmate.
Keres, Botvinik, Petrosian, Tal... Bobby Fischer was really walking into a hornet's nest.
By the end it would also have been possible for Keres to block the queens attack with the knight or the bishop, so that an immediate checkmate would not have been possible. He would have lost the queen, though.
Followed by almost immediate mate by rook or queen. Hence the mate in 5 from the pause position.
Nice yeah I calculated Rf3
Which software is that board.
amazing
Nice! 👌🏻😁

When is going to be next candidate tornament¿
For the first time I can call myself an excellent player and not just someone who enjoys the show! Agadmator may be using the word excellent player a bit loosely on this one...but I'll take it.

I wish the winning side was at the lower part of the screen... then I can imagine that I'm making the moves. ;-)
Is there something special about the 1959 tourney? It is the year I was born, just asking.
I caught at 1st glance...... q takes p check... so i am an excellent player...🤣🤣😎😎😎😎
Antonio...can u analyze a game for me?????
I found the move omg I can't believe it
