The problem is they want you to have 5 years of experience for an entry level job. Literally no exaggeration. Most graduates were 17 years old 5 years ago. It really is crazy. What’s the point in having entry level jobs if they want you to already be experienced? Nobody has time to do an unpaid internship in this day of age.

Employers: we can't find new grads to hire!
Also employers: entry-level means 5+ experience in every programming language in the universe, unlimited PTO you can't use, "competitive" minimum wage pay w/ expected shifts on holidays and weekends and unpaid overtime. "Must be a team player!"

now I'm scared. I'm going to graduate school and I have a great array of internships and a solid research position. I've been able to achieve this in 2 years and I'm graduating a year early. One of my internships offered me a fulltime position after I graduate while pursuing my masters (if I decide to stay in this city) however I recognized that's not what I'm interested in. I have friends with zero and want to work but without internships and research how likely would that even happen. I never thought that was realistic.

What people seem to forget is a degree is in lieu of experience. When you graduate you just proved a whole lot about who you are, your ability to commit, to struggle, to persevere and to overcome. Ignoring such a person indicates the problem, money and power will always choke out new life. We are that new life and we are not being allowed to make it, despite achieving more than the previous generations in terms of preparing to enter the work force.
If everyone accepts low wages, than employers will never offer anything more than that. We must value ourselves more than they do.

The best job qualification is not a degree. Its not experience. Its nepotism. It also helps if those that have received it do not pull the rope up behind them in the misguided belief that they got to where they are at completely by themselves. Especially when at first they admitted to the help only to change the story and even fool themselves later.

My advice is to have the courage to pursue your goals. Be able to learn and open yourself to a world of opportunities. School is meant for those who want to understand themselves and the world better. Your major does not define you but it certainly tells something about your interest and passions. We need the arts and humanities as much as the sciences and medical field. All life is art but work is life. And work can involve creativity but I’m assuming most of the dull people in this comment section are a bit greedy. Sometimes you pursue ideas because you just want to, not for the potential gains. What’s the issue here? The real issue is the unjust system itself.

    • @jeanphillipeking4838
      @jeanphillipeking4838 3 роки тому +17

Well the medical field thrives because people unfortunately suffer. If everyone thought like you, the world would be stuck and everyone would be aiming low. Yeah there might be money in that field alway but if that is only why you are doing that then that is sad. People need to have passion for what they choose to do in life. For instance first generation students of color aiming high go to prestigious schools because in the first place they were never even welcomed to be there. Its about defying the odds and shooting for ur dream no matter how hard it is, I understand all must make a living and need experience and more to make it in this bizarre world but chasing dollar bills sounds pathetic

Is that 200k “Prestigious” school worth it when you end up making 55k and paying back those loans for 25 years? Most people don’t care about going where their not “welcomed” to prove a point. They care about setting themselves up for success, logically.
Secondly, your livelihood doesn’t need to be your passion. You do realize hobbies exist, right?
Thirdly, maybe being a nurse was her dream? It’s an admirable career. Also, Who gave you the right to determine what her life “is about”. For most people, it’s about making calculated decisions for the best outcome.

If you are majoring in Psychology and are interested in working with people: Earning a Master's degree in Counseling is also a path that involves gaining practical experience while allowing one to obtain licensure. This is a route one can take prior to pursing a doctorate in the field. Also, Applied Behavioral Analysis is also an alternate subfield/avenue that psych majors can explore. ABA typically involves becoming a registered behavioral technician (where you'd be servicing families with children on the Autism Spectrum). ABA is a great way to gain experience & help others in the field of psychology prior to obtaining graduate degree.

Our company is hiring, but we have a hard time hiring mature and serious candidates.
Some candidates come in and get tongue tied, some burst into tears for absolutely no reason. Some bring their parents and try to get their parent to answer questions for their behalf. Some bring their boyfriends or girlfriends to the interview. There were a few who brought teddy bears or soft toys. Some does not know what the dress code is and came for interview in basketball attire or in tank tops and miniskirts. There was one who wore a shiny tuxedo. Some come in and before he had a chance to go through the door was already asking how much is the pay around here. About 99% cannot do simple middle school math when resented with a written test. One couldn't subtract 23 from 17 and had to reach out for a calculator and when I stopped him, he resorted to counting with his fingers. Many does not know how many inches go into one foot, or feet into one meter. Despite this when I asked whether he'd like to join, he said that he has to ask his grandmother for permission first. So I gave up in hiring zillenials (or whatever they're called) 8 years ago. But I sincerely wish them all the best.

This has nothing to do with the job market and everything to do with their junk degrees. Notice how there is never computer science or engineering students featured in these videos?

I can assure you that it's not much better in CS. The HR departments posting junior dev jobs are way out of touch and the market is so oversaturated to the point it is taking hundreds of applications for people to get a single offer. I'm in that boat rn with a computational physics major and minors in math and CS, I've been stuck in a catch-22 for seemingly forever now unable to land anything.

I’m sorry but don’t feel sorry for them. Yes u have a college degree but where are the experience???? These kids want to start out making 6 figures. Not going to happen. Get a entry level job work your way up and stop looking for a handout.

entry level jobs are extremely competitive and difficullt to obtain, especially during a pandemic where businesses close left and right. the job market is terrible rn

I graduated college in 2020 and been trying to apply for production assistant positions at news stations / entertainment companies.
So far I’ve applied for 80 entry level jobs with only 2 interviews and emails saying that they’re looking for other people. 😬

@@Mr.JayWay exactly! Nowa days, the only way to get experience is by getting experience! Everyone knows a college degree isnt enough and that's why there's not enough internship and job opportunities to go around! Back in the day, having a degree was enough to secure a successful job but now, companies have much more higher expectations and most jobs come from connections anyways

The ones that do know how to grind and do the hard work..... well they are in STEM field anyway.. so they are not crying.

Remember graduates, you're not kids anymore. You're in the real world you need to be proactive on branding yourself as the best person for the job. Do not whine or beg for a job which will close some doors.
