Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, a thousand year old epic poem holds the record of the longest poem by a single author, and considered the most influential book in Persian language as it helped its survival against the Arabic language. Who was Ferdowsi and why did he write this book? What’s Shahnameh about? Why is it so important for Persian speakers? why is it almost impossible to translate? These are the questions I am going to answer in this video.
I'm on a journey to read unique books and stories from every country on earth , not only to understand the country, its people and culture better, but also learn storytelling so I can write my own novel one day.

9:48 - 10:03 we also have Iranian warrior women with gordafarid in shahnāmeh and also I think Faranak mother of Fereydun was Iranian too but also lets remember that Afghanistan was part of old Iran or persian empire as such wouldn't it make sense for Ferdowsi to view them as Iranian instead of outsiders.
Because lets face it if Ferdowsi wanted to review persian culture wouldn't it make sense for him to also praise persian women.
Edit: many countries today were part of old persia before Arab invasion as such for us modern readers this may sound like Ferdowsi is praising those countries but in reality if we keep that in mind that how big persian empire was before Arab invasion it would make sense why.

Thank you for your great presentation. I am from Tajikistan. We used to learn Shahname at school. Now that I grown up, I understand some meaning more deeply and sometimes I can apply it in my daily life.
The movies scenes you use here are my fav from all time. It was shoot during Soviet Tajik Union. it it epic! I wish one day Hollywood could make movie from Shahname stories. 😃

thank you very much for the video and making an effort to make it, it is a near perfect introduction to the matter. i personally think that the mythical themes and references in shahnameh are so dominant that it would be like 40% myth in my opinion but it's my understanding for now and i might be wrong about it.

Money was NOT his objective. It was only when he exhausted everything he had writing Shahnamah, he was persuaded by his friends to ask the Sultan for some assistance. When Firdausi presented some of his work to the Sultan, he was impressed and promised 1 gold coin for each of his couplet. Firdausi went on to finish his work and asked for the reward as promised, but was denied. However, his intentions were not that of the reward itself. He only wanted what he was promised. Had the Sultan provided the assistance he needed without any promises, Firdausi would still have completed his work. His motivations to start the work on Shahnamah were embedded in the fact that the people of Arab were persistently devouring everything that was Persian and to recover what was lost due to Arabian destruction of Persian culture, he started his work on Shahnamah.

Yes sure!! but i think, ramayan & mahabharat are too "common" here at least in our country. Many books, movies and tv dramas have been made. However i think, it would be more satisfying to ponder over vast sanskrit literature and books which even many indians haven't read or even know about. A small list --> www.sanskrit.nic.in/about_sanskrit.php But do keep in mind there is a method to understand its essense rather than the words and letters. It is difficult to de-link it with religion and we call our religion sanatan dharama or the unbroken eternal way of life. Much of the essence gets lost in translation. Shahnameh is actually more about stages of human being and battles that one goes through in life. Most translations do not translate the verses properly so the stories are understood either as myth or history. Even the title translation is incorrect. The book is not about kings, rather the title means the king of books (or King of Letters to be more correct). Each name and character in the book has meaning, like one is knowledge, the other is pride, jealousy, and so on. The epic history of Rostam and Sohrab for example is about truth and lying. Rostam lies and by lying he ends up killing his own son, suffering one of the worst pains any human could go through. The story is trying to teach people not to lie as lying is the ultimate sin and will be punished. That is unlike most religions in the world where lying can be forgiven or in some cases encouraged. Aside from his amazing creativity, Ferdowsi is also remembered for his incredible wisdom and insights that are still true today as they were 1000 years ago. The teachings of this book should be taught at every school in the world as it can help everyone learn more about themselves and how to deal with our own daemons.

it is great but have some mistakes. Ferdosi talks about Franak, Freydon mother that was very strong woman. Arnavaz, Iraj mother that was a smart woman, and many other women. Besides, Afghanistan was part of Iran on the Ferdosi time.
Thank you for your comment. You’re right. I agree there are some strong women in shahnameh. I said that in the video. The warrior woman. In my reading most (not all) of them came from other places. I think ferdowsi doesn’t really define Iran so it was hard for me to understand where “his” Iran was geographically speaking. He mentions Kabul as somewhat an ally of Iran but sometimes almost an enemy as they kill Rostam. Anyway I appreciate your comment as it’s educational for people to read.

The horse was a holy animal, mythical and associated with the Sun...as seen in the Brhad Aranyaka included with the Upanishads. Jamshed of Shahname is Yama Ksaeta or Yama the Bright, a leader of the Aryans in the Arctic region where the Sun rose & set once a year as seen in the Vendidad, written in Avestan Persian. It is interesting to note that knowledge of the kingdoms of Anatolia is mentioned in the Shahname; this is no surprise since the Anatolians like the Hittites, Lydians, Lycians, Phrygians were all indo-europeans. Hittite is by far the most studied and a Hittite text is the oldest document in an indo-european language although written in the cuneiform borrowed from their Assyrian neighbors. The Thracian kings' tombs uncovered in Bulgaria have their openings to the South, the domain of Yama. Archeologists A. Fol and Marazov conclude that Thracians had a Yama like important hero or deity.

Yes I read the entire English translation by dick Davis. It’s in prose so not as beautiful as in original Persian. It took me a few weeks but I enjoyed it.

Hello. At 12:22, when you speak of pre islamic iran and you include that photo of persepolis, which came from Achaemind dynasty, it is very wrong to say " slavery was rampant" because slavery was actually banned during that time under the Cyrus Cylinder.
I guess rampant is not the right word. I was trying to tell that romanticizing the past as some paradise lost ignores that 90% of the people were either slaves or had no political say. Only a tiny elite ruled the society.

Shahnameh is mainly about the Sassanian period so slavery wasn’t as bad as in Europe at the time.
Ferdowsi exaggerates a lot. I was caught in his artistic snare.

It's quite true what you mentioned about women in this book. I'm fascinated by how women seem intelligent and give advice to men. Dick Davies gave a talk (it's on youtube) where he mentioned that whenever men didn't take the advice of women, they made errors or got into trouble. It would be interesting to learn more about this and interpretations for why Ferdowsi included this. But why are these women not from Iran? What were the views of women during Ferdowsi's time (Comparing Iranian and non-Iranian women)? Could Ferdowsi be suggesting that women can become powerful leaders, too? :P Perhaps during his time, Iranian women were not leaders but some women from other countries were. Therefore, why can't Islamic women be leaders, too? Could this be why men in The Shahnameh made errors when they didn't follow the advice of women? It's interesting to ponder this amazing book from this perspective. All around, The Shahnameh is a great book.

Thank you! It’s an interesting topic you raised. As I said in the video it might be because ferdowsi was writing 200 years after the region had converted to Islam so he was in a way superimposing the new realities onto the past realities. This idea of (relatively) freer and stronger women is not only in shahnameh but in many other stories of this period. My guess (just a guess) is this stems from this idea that “our women are modest and feminine” while “foreign” women are somewhat given more freedom because we don’t have to deal with them. Maybe I’m wrong. I think “the other” is exoticised in all human cultures. Im not scholar so I can’t give you a solid answer.
@@Fiction_Beast Quite true. I was shy to mention Islam because it brings up a huge discussion topic with lots of areas of debate. That makes sense Ferdowsi could view his own women as modest and feminine while giving other women a bit more leeway. An amazing feature of the internet is maybe a scholar in this area of research will chime in. :D

There is no "trash talking" in Shahnameh: in some instances opposing kings attempt psychological intimidation by trading insults via letter, usually a wise, spiritual advisor steps in and their counsel is followed by profuse apologies and extravagant gifts. It is nothing like the brutal barbarism of the Iliad, Odyssey etc.

Great vid, but you need to extend your image when you see the word "Iran" in the Shahnameh. Iran isn't just the modern borders of Iran the country. Afghanistan was Iran as Ariana. Ossetians call their country iryston in their language. The Kurds called their homeland Iran in their myths, Kurds, being an Iranic people also have their own works of mythology, one of which is called "The Kurdish Shahnameh" which isn't a Kurdish translation but rather the Kurdish variants of the same myths and it even contains some stories that Ferdowsi didn't include in the Shahnameh. So for example when you said many brave women in the Shahnameh were non Iranians from places like Kabul I was surprised, because Kabul is a part of Iran in the Shahnameh, one of the most important cities in fact.
But yes great vid it was interesting to see a foreign perspective on Iranian mythology as an Iranian
Thank you for your comment. I love how sensible your comment is. Mostly I get a lot of abuse from people for getting things wrong. I admit i am not an exepert so I mostly based my analysis on my reading. I'm inherently a confused person. I think "Iran" is not a tangable and real place with clear border in Ferdowsi's head. It's like an imaginary place for him. but since most of the places named in Shahnameh appear to be to the east of Iran it seems Ferdowsi assume the Greater Khorsan to be Iran. The reason i assumed Kabul wasn't in Iran because Ferodowsi constantly refer to it as a place that Iranian heroes go to "from Iran" and it has its own king and everything. Also, let's face it the Kabulis were the ones who killed the greatest Iranian hero Rostam and not very trustworthy people in Shahnameh (now i will get more abuse from Kabul. oops!). I understand the Iranic people are very diverse that includes the kurds, pashtuns, osetians and many more. Also the persian language is spoken in many countries. I hope to make a video in the future to explain the terms like Persian, Iran, Khorsan etc. who knows if I get the time. again, love your comment.
@@Fiction_Beast What you said about many of the important events happening in east of Iran or eastern Iranian regions is correct, that is actually due to a reason that you mentioned in this video as well! You mentioned how due to an Indo European migration theory the ancestors of Iranians may have originally resided in the steppes of central Asia, what that is interesting is how in the early chapters of Shahnameh or the Avesta, barely any place in western Iran is mentioned, that is because the Iranians had yet not migrated to or conquered those lands yet! In the later chapters we see this "Iran-zamin" which Ferdowsi talks about expand, almost half of the Shahnameh is about the Sasanian empire, in these chapters you see western Iranian places mentioned more than eastern ones unlike the early chapters! So yeah the geographical location of Iran keeps changing according to the political events of each chapter and story. At first it's just modern day Afghanistan, or the general Bactrian-Margian civilization. Slowly Iranians migrate to more western lands and form the modern Iranian country. This original Iran which was most probably in Afghanistan was named "Airyanem Vaejah" in the Avestan language and old Persian. Airyanem would later linguistically evolve into the word Iran, and was applied to many places in which Iranic speaking peoples resided.

@@Fiction_Beast hello sorry for taking a pretty damn long time to reply, but I realized something that I thought would be interesting to share.
I read somewhere on how the word Iran in Shahnameh's literature can have different meanings due to the complexity of usage of metaphors and similes in Persian literature, not all words mean what we think.
For example sometimes the word Iran, is short for the people of Iran. You can find verses which in the original text are something like "Iran did something" or "Iran rose up" here Iran means the whole of the population of Iran.
Sometimes Iran means the capital of Iran, similar to how in English sometimes you guys use the capital of a country for the entire country, but here it's the opposite..
So for example when in parts of the Shahnameh it says the X character went from Iran to Kerman or from Iran to Kabul, which can be confusing because both of these locations are supposedly within Iran, what that Ferdowsi meant was the x character went from the capital(capital of Iran changes numerous times in different chapters so it's not always the same city) to the mentioned location.
And no sorry I don't really know any sources to introduce but I hope you can find the best sources for your research :)
Thank you for the comment. Yes I agree Ferdowsi wasn’t clear because things kept changing. During his lifetime the Samanids were replaced by ghaznavids, neither was based in the traditional Iranian capital. One in Bukhara and the other in ghazni while in Shahnameh both seem to be the enemy territories. Anyway it’s a work of literature that fictionalised history and mixed it with myths and legends. Should be read for fun, and it’s artistic value, not as a history book. That’s my opinion.

Thanks for the video, you mentioned Ferdowsi says Alexanders mother is Iranian and that's his 100% propaganda, that can be the case but note that Darius annex Macedonia some 200 years before little Alex was born, the whole reason behind Macedonians being good with horses was Persian imperial army training and 3000 horse that Darius gave to the great-great grandfather of Alexander (named Alexander too) because his kingdom was sort of Protector of those territories to keep the greeks scared and out, I'm saying he could be right somehow Alex being Iranian, Macedonian Argead dynasty had deep relations with Persia and there's evidence of Alexander himself being full-on Persianized classic Achaemenid king, in fact, a lot of historians mark his death as the end of the Achaemenids in terms of Administration.
That's an interesting theory.

Thanks for the comment. Those are really interesting similarities. Does pardes mean foreign land? Perhaps paradise is somewhere else where the grass is greener? It’s interesting the story of Rostam and suhrab is a very well known tale in most of Central Asia, the Caucasus region and the Turkic world and course all the Persian-speaking countries.
@@Fiction_Beast well DESH is like KESHWAR in Farsi , we also call it KSHETAR which is like KESHWAR in Persian , Persian lost lots it vocabulary due to Arab rule , but many words in Abrahamic religion are from Persian, just like DEEN ( دین) in Arabic and DAT ( דָת), and even all the religious prayer “ just like “ BENAME KHUDDA BAND “ to Hebrew BARUKH ATA ADNOI “ in JUDISM to “ BISMILLAH REHMAN RAHIM “ is all the simple translation of Zoroastrianism, I am an American living in New York and I know many languages, including Arbic HEWREW greek Spanish german Italian Latin , There are lots of Jews in New York, in HEWREW and Christian the name of GOD is YAHWEH , , I asked many Jews what does it means, they answered me we don’t know, then I explained them it is YAJDA in Persian or YUJTA in Sanskrit , even GOD is drive from GOTT of german and in Sanskrit is YUJ , so Persian and Sanskrit have lots of vocabulary in most of languages, just like country’ s last name STAN is from Sanskrit and Persian, and CIVITA of Latin to state in English

@@S1n6341Persian perserved all of its ancient vocabulary because of Ferdowsi. Persia was never ruled by Arabs. Arabs can't say the letter P in Persian words.

Actually regarding what you said he didn’t say anything nice about others but Iranian is not right. If you have read Shahnameh you realise that Ferdowsi has been fair about Turks and Turanis. He always talks with respect about their heros. He was against bad thoughts and bad deeds even if the person is Iranian. You need to read the book deeply to understand what I’m saying. Ferdowsi many times blame some Iranian kings and heroes for not following the right Path. It’s not about race it’s about following the right path or not.

1. I mentioned in the video that ferdowsi divides the world between good and evil in general. I mentioned he criticizes bad Iranian kings
2. Iran vs turan or Iranians vs other people, Ferdowsi always favors Iran and Iranian. Throughout shahbameh non Iranians are depicted as enemy, so mostly treacherous, cunning and with bad intentions. If I write an epic of my people I’ll do the same.
3. My comment was that ferdowsi didn’t have a lot of nice things to say about non Iranians. Some but not a lot.
4. Perhaps I was wrong in my reading of shahnameh. Quite possible. But if you look online you will find plenty of articles confirming my reading. Well mostly anti Arab reading of shahnameh but for me turan is the main enemy in shahnameh. Ferdowsi also occasionally confuses turanians with Turks and vice versa.
5. It’s a work of fiction and that’s how I read it. Of course for some it’s like a holly book so I did my best to be unbiased. But I’m a human after all.
Again I do appreciate your comment. I’m trying to be a better reader so this journey is a learning curve. I love shahnameh and the Persian language and devoted a lot of my time on this. So I don’t have bad intention. I hope you understand.
@@Fiction_Beast Thanks for your comment. I’m sure you had good intention for doing such a good work. But I still believe Ferdowsi was always fair about non Iranian too. For example when Keikhosrow defeated Afrasyab snd Turan, he asked his men not to harm anybody as they have no problem with people following right path and he has problem with Afrasyab only as he chose to go on wrong path.
Ferdowsi didn’t see Turan a totally seperate land and people. Turanian were descendants of Fereydoon as Iranian were. So basically they were same people but only differences was choosing right path or not.
He blames Esfandiar who was prince of Iran, for bad intention. And so many others.
He even uses word “Taazi” for those Arab people with bad deeds to differentiate the good ones and bad ones.
The only part of Shahnameh which is biased is those 1000 poems of “Daghighi” which is not Ferdowsi’s poems.

More importantly, it is a Perso-Zoroasterian name. The religion that the Abbassids and Ummayyids did their best to finish.
I believe the Shahnameh is of the same literary value as the Quran is for Arabic literature. Both cemented the base for their respective languages, apart from culture and religion by the latter as well.
Also, interesting is that Iranian culture civilized the Turks to such an extent, from the dresses, to ideology and culture, that even the language group is still termed as Turanian sometimes.
The horse part cracked me off. I guess, every civilization has some kind of liking towards a particular animal, camels for Arabs, Horses for Persians, Wolves for Turks and Cows for Indians hehe.

There are another cultures for example Kurd ,Lur ,Baloch ,Talesh ,etc and they are Iranians too.
Being Iranian means that people accept to live together despite their color ,culture ,religion ,language or anything else that make differences between humans.
And there are a lot of difference between Islamic republic and Iran .In Islamic republic they legislate by Quran and other Islamic rules .Because of that we don't live in Iran we are Iranians that live in Islamic republic And here government just talks about Islam and Islamic characters and they don't even teach us completely about our identity.

Good video but one mistake, I am a Tajik from ghazni and Mahmoud ghaznawi is a Tajik not turk. Ghazni city and its district is majority tajik still till today
I think he was from a Turkic family but as most Turkic rulers of the time, they were Persianised Turks which means they spoke Persian and employed Persian speakers and promoted the Persian language and culture.

I'm also Tajik from Tajikistan, and as we were taught at school, the Ghaznevids were of Turk dissent. And that Ferdowsi originally planed to present Shahname not to Mahmud but to Samanid king, who was iranian and cherished literture. But while he was writing Shahname the Samanid dynasty was overthrown by Ghaznevids and that is why Ferdowsi had no choice but to present it to Mahmoud Ghaznevi. Mahmoud Ghaznevi did not pay proper attention to this book at first and didn't pay Ferdowsi what he was hoping for. After some time when Ghaznevi realized the true value of Shahname he ordered his servants to "shower Ferdowsi whith gold", but when they went to his house his daughter told them that he died in poverty years ago and now he doesn't need this money.

I could definitely see Mahmud Ghazni crying over his dead body leaving gold coins by his grave and spending a ton on his funeral. I bet this really changed history too, when you look at how Mahmud eventually expanded his empire so rapidly and their Turko-Persian posterity choosing Persian as the language of Indian courts. He was the first Turkik king of Iran and he chose Persian as the national language. Which other poet single-handedly saved an ancient language from exctinction (Farsi would for sure be next to elamite, median, parthian, babylonian, sumerian, akkadian, syriac, adhari, Persian-Aramaic and other dead languages) with just his right hand and pen (not even a pen, a medieval feather Qalam with medieval ink) more than a millennium ago?

You might be right. I think Ferdowsi seems confused about where exactly Iran is. He always says someone went from Iran to Kabul. Or Someone came from Samangan to Iran. There is no mention of Iran's georgraphy or borders in Shahnameh so it appears more as an imaginary place for Ferdowsi. I think his Iran is mainly Tus where he was born, grew up and died. Anyway, my comment was on Ferdowsi's way of thinking, not about Iran.

Hi. You did a mistake when you were talking about women in Shahname. The mothers of great characters that you mnetioned were not Iranian because they were princesses. The blood was supper important for Iranians. So great heros had mothers with kings blood.
On the other hand we have female warriors in shahname like Gordafarid who was 100% Iranian.
Turan does not mean Turk. Turanians were Iranian who lived outside of the Persian empires borders. Those who came to be known as Turks are actually mostly locals who assimilated into Turkish language due to conversation to Islam and Political power of “Turkish” tribes. The Seljuks for example used to be in Siberia and moved down to Central Asia where they became Muslims and gained power but adopted the local cultures. That’s how Persian culture survived.
9:17 the bones of the first domesticated horses were found in Iran. Not central Asia. And the Assyrians bought horses from the people living in Northern Iran. Horses are an INTEGRAL part of Iranian culture. And the reason why the "last thing you could think of, is horses, when you think of Iranians", is simply because of your cluelessness about Iran after watching too many Hollywood movies. The Iranian plateau and Central Asia are very much connected (topographically) and Iranians ARE defacto Central- and western Asian.

your information about shahnama ferdowsi is not correct.because you did not read it by yourself. actualy shanamah was not written by ferdowsi ,it was translated by ferdowsi from an old historical book about the silk road kings. in his book ferdowsi says how he decided to translate this old book of the kings. someone that he did'nt mention his name has brought the book , and ask ferdowsi to translate the book in persian turn it into the poem .and write it in arabic alphabet . because the book was writtin in non arabic alphabets.

If you read Shahnameh then you will realize that he was Arab. He was son of Mardas an Arab king. After Jamshid shah became arrogant and called himself God, Iranian heroes and nobles asked Zahhak son of Mardas to rule over them. Mardas was a good and kind Arab king and he was killed by his son Zahhak.

An excellent video but I have two objections.
Firstly: no Iranian cares about the mongols, as the mongols in Iran adopted persian culture, many nationalists like to point to this to prove their "superiority" .
The care about the Greeks absolutely, because his idea of "globalisation" was just as lethal as the one we are facing today, which is destroying all cultures except the western one.
And finally the Arab invasion, which burned history to the ground, which most Iranians care about.
Secondly and most importantly: your representation of the old persian empires is sadly utterly false.
In the Achaemenid empire, slavery was abolished. Then after its fall, later persian empires had slaves , yes. But they had rights, could be freed, and could become full Iranian citizens and even noblemen. This was pretty much inspired from the Roman system.
And about the brutal rulers, you got to be kidding me. Every kingdom had good and bad rulers.
