Nicely done! I used to work for Leo Kottke in the mid-70's and he used to always give credit for Steam Engine to Sam McGee. So this is a hilariously interesting and relatively recent video from a 2019 LK performance. [After playing Last Steam Engine and jamming with Chet Atkins and Doc Watson]“…and when we were done, Chet said, ‘What is that?’ And I said, ‘Well, John Fahey wrote it; disowned it, and said Sam MCGee wrote it.’ Chet said, ‘Well, I know Sam McGee and he never played anything like that.’ So, John is no longer with us and neither is Chet and I would like to play a new tune of mine for you tonight…”
I have listened to many guitar teachers on UA-cam and I must say you were definitely one of the very best! Please never stop teaching, much appreciated!
Just love this tune and your very calm and measured teaching technique. Please please please do more acoustic blues on your channel and Patreon page , every week I live in hope for more acoustic material from you 😎
I think I saw somewhere he’d use a new set of strings before each set. This is an interesting point though. I wonder if he would never change the low E string to get that dead thunking sound. Interesting thought you had
“ Today I feel like looking at something acoustic”. I can relate Adrian, as I feel that way about every day!! Really excellent choice here! This will keep me challenged for a very long time! Thanks so much for the lesson and have a great weekend!
I Love it Adrian! Thanks buddy! Lately, I've been focusing totally on doing what you said about getting the notes "down cold", focusing on my pentatonic scales of each note and connecting them up and down the fret board, getting my chords and chord playing much better/cleaner and learning my regular scales, the "F" barre chord, moving from the "G" to "C" chords and, "having fun after working on the Must Do's". But, it's these lessons that I can't wait to get back to as well. You know, individual particular melodies and chords and how to play them. Everything that I've been doing will lead me to better picking as well, I'm sure. It's all about the structure First and then free-styling it! I'm very happy to say that I'm reaching the goals that you set for us because I've been really focusing on them and discovering other things in-between as I'm playing. It's Fun! And, it's Great Having Structure! I'll be catching up soon as I'm getting further into the intermediate and then back to these types of videos learning these tunes with you! You're one of the absolute Best teachers and I Really appreciate you. Thanks again my friend!
Great playing, I just picked up a 00-15m a couple of months ago... Totally in love with mine, sounds so great... I just seem to pick Big Star tunes on it all day!! 🤷🏻♂️🙃
just started playing with a thumb pick (or learning to play with one, at any rate,) so this comes as a good time for me. Should be a cool one to dig into in my practice routine once I get the basic technique down.
Learn Mystery Train from Adrian, that was my Travis Picking breakthrough moment and I thought I would never do it. It took a few weeks practicing from the tab, note by note, and then it just clicked.
This is fantastic mate, well beyond me just now (and maybe for a considerable time to come) but can still take loads to work on. Love this style and you break it down lovely. Well presented tutorial showing everything in ‘bits’. Thank you 🙏🏻😊✌🏻
I wish my sounds were so sweet when finding a tune difficult. I'm still finding basic alternative picking hard, and thumb picks seem impossible. I have learnt Adrian's interpretation of Robert Johnson decently. It's taken me 14 months with near daily practice (sometimes I don't get to it in my daily jam) and I am really really pleased I made a real effort. Stunning tune and a great inspiring lesson by Adrian. Check it out if you haven't. This is a great lesson too, but Adrian's I Walk the Line lesson needs lots of work from me before I attempt Fahey's alternative picking AND fingerstyle.
That Robert Johnson lesson looked kind of bewildering the first time I saw it, but I was happy to realize that it's at least not too bad sounding now--same thing with Stagger Lee and Vestapol, although still some small hangups in each that need a little more focused work. This Fahey track is beyond what I'm going to tackle right at the moment though.
Leo Kottke recorded this when I was much younger. Some might want to look for his version. He has always been my favorite acoustic finger style guitarist.
I miss this delta blues finger style .. going to try this with a thumb pick .. btw love that Martin.. is that a 00015 M ?... like to try this today..that you for sharing and I subscribed
Great stuff! Thank you for the lesson! One minor, tiny little point- Fahey never used metal finger picks. Plastic only. Would love a lesson on "The Yellow Princess!" Thanks again!
Thanks Eric. Yes, I stand corrected about the fingerpicks. Not sure where I heard he used metal fingerpicks, but I always assumed that to be true. Must actually be a combination of the plastic picks and also perhaps playing quite loud and close to the bridge. Might well do more Fahey this year, so will add Yellow Princess to my list of possibles!
Think you are amazing man, thanks for your work! Do you have any tips or lessons on how to transcribe songs? Could you ever make a video about your process perhaps?
If youre having trouble with this go try some Skip James songs, who had independent thumb bass but in a more simple way. The right thumb is the stupidest location on the human body and it needs a lot of disciplining.
Very best piece by Fahey. Best played by L. Kottke. What you play here is a somewhat stripped down (simplified) version - some tones (fast "alternations" on bass strings) are missing here and there...
Hi there, sorry to bother you with trivia, but could you please recommend a thumb pick brand? I want to start using then but i've heard that lots of them are too long and that shorter ones work best. TIA

Haha brilliant. Great story, thanks for sharing!
Absolutely amazing.
If you could please, please, please do Sligo River Blues by Fahey. I'd be over the moon.
I have listened to many guitar teachers on UA-cam and I must say you were definitely one of the very best! Please never stop teaching, much appreciated!
Fahey my all time favourite guitar player. true master. genius.
I'm so happy that Fahey lessons are popping up all over youtube
more john fahey? holy hell yes, thankyou!. this will give me something to do over xmas (and probably into next year by the looks)
Wow! Great song and wonderful ‘breakdown’. Thanks so much for all your help!
This is the best guitar channel on UA-cam, and by some margin. Absolutely GOATed, great stuff brother.
Just love this tune and your very calm and measured teaching technique. Please please please do more acoustic blues on your channel and Patreon page , every week I live in hope for more acoustic material from you 😎
I think Fahey was famous for using very big strings and never changing them. He loved that dead thunking sound on the bass.

I sent you a request for a lesson on this tune about a year ago (I'm sure many have done the same!). Well worth the wait! Thank you!

Excellent lesson, Adrian! Made this piece more approachable for me. Thanks!!!
An another gem, thank you Mister !
Hell yes! I loved your Freight Train lesson. This one is next...
How have I not found your channel sooner!!! bauhaus and john Fahey on the same channel, what a godsend
I really appreciate your john fahey lessons, if you can look at wine and roses some time in the future (off the same album) it would be amazing.
Excellent taste! I discovered John Fahey couple of years ago via an interview with Steve Gunn

Feels like walking in flippers?
@@allmendoubt4784 LOL - that's one way to look at it, yeah. Still getting tangled up a lot but getting there.
Great lesson.
An intro after playtrough - what a humbleness! Great tut, great song and you are great as well, sir! Thanks a lot, you've got a new subscriber :)
I have the exact same guitar and this tune fits this perfectly :)
Excellent my Christmas project sorted Hours of fun
Well, I know what I'm doing for the next month. Thanks! Loved it.
Great one. Adrian. Thank you. I love you
That is absolutely superb. Give yourself a pat on the back 👍
out of my league, at least for now, keep em coming, thanks
Were you ever able to come back to it?
@@ceeds.mp3 inching closer and closer! Thanks.
@@drewdietz2115 hell yeah dude, you got it
Nicely broken down, very enjoyable 😎🎙🎸✅
The production quality of these lessons in the last few months is amazing. Shame I can't play fingerstyle (yet).
I’m playing 25 years + and I still can’t play fingerstyle beyond the most basic stuff. Good luck.
Learn Mystery Train from Adrian, that was my Travis Picking breakthrough moment and I thought I would never do it. It took a few weeks practicing from the tab, note by note, and then it just clicked.

Brilliant blues paying really enjoyed it
I love this tune!!!
One of my favorites. I'm sure I'll be stealing some of your licks.
The first part of dance of death would be awesome!
Great video, thank you
Becoming a better finger picker will be. 2021 goal of mine.
Juste sublime! Bravo et merci!
above my pay grade adrian but i eventually got freight train half decent thanks to you, I think this may take a tad longer !

I think I’ll start with your lesson on Joy to the World. I should be ready for this one in about five years or so, give or take a year.
Great stuff! Thank you for the lesson!
One minor, tiny little point- Fahey never used metal finger picks. Plastic only.
Would love a lesson on "The Yellow Princess!"
Thanks again!

You and Eric Haugen spreading the word about John Fahey, keep them coming!
Yes!
That guitar looks like it was made for blues. Nice
Think you are amazing man, thanks for your work! Do you have any tips or lessons on how to transcribe songs? Could you ever make a video about your process perhaps?
Sounds good to me
Fun fact: if you can play this song - you can play everything by John Fahey.
You should a song lesson from one of iceage's last two albums - their guitarist is amazing! Very rowland s howard esque
Think I'll be giving this one a miss at this stage but very pleasing to hear.
Lol .. you play very good .. GJ
The Martin 00 sounds sweet as a nut!
If youre having trouble with this go try some Skip James songs, who had independent thumb bass but in a more simple way. The right thumb is the stupidest location on the human body and it needs a lot of disciplining.

Great stuff Adrian. To anyone who's interested, check out my favorite Leo Kotke playing this one.

Maybe one day.
I entered Landon Bailey's youtube channel giveaway contest - who's your guitar hero. Well, it's young Adrian of course!

Did you pick that shirt out specially? 😊
It's lovely Adrian (unfortunately out of my league)

Great lesson but whatever you're recording with, it's got tons of distortion.
