Summertime 3-Way Rig Yellowtail | Bonus Underwater Video from Greg | Targeting Big Fish All Year

  • In this video I am using a 3 way swivel rig instead of my usual dropper loop. I use this rig when I'm planning to be close to the kelp. I catch a nice 30+ pound grade yellowtail on a big greenback mackerel, while fishing from my Hobie Pro Angler 14 Kayak.

    I’m having a tuff time in La Jolla. I’m out of Vegas with my 2020 pa14.
    The brother has a house in Solana Beach so I’m here a lot dealing with the ccp virus the best one can.
    Today it was as if a Micro storm hit the bay Highwinds white caps And pretty nice Size swell out there Tue Sep 8.
    It hasn’t been too hard to find bait and I’m thankful for that but the elusive yellowtail is still just that “elusive”
    I will endure to persevere🇺🇸. Thanks for your insight. I am positive it has reduced the learning curve.
    I need to buy you a Fear, Movie, Lions, IPA at “Stone” one of these days.😎🇺🇸

    ...also, back in the day we'd just a some burlap in the boat that we could cover the fish with and just wet it down every once in awhile. Evaporative cooling and kept the fish moist.

    Awesome YT. Any chance you can give a run down of your rigs in a future video?

    • @chrisblevinsfishing
      @chrisblevinsfishing  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Cal, yes for sure. I realized that I didn't cover my rig at all in this video... my bad. I am running a 3 way swivel rig, which is essentially just the same as a dropper loop. I tie my 65# powerpro mainline to the swivel, I was using 40# mono for the "leader" line to 4/0 ringed circle hook, and 30# mono to the 8oz torpedo sinker. My bait was a large, live greenback mackerel. This rig I use to fish the bottom near the kelp, or if I'm targeting "light biters" such as halibut. Thanks for watching!

    • @caldeguia5720
      @caldeguia5720 3 роки тому

      Chris Blevins thanks for the reply. Wouldn’t you have less chance of breaking off with a standard dropper loop of 30# mono? Two knots versus the four with a three way swivel. Or are you more concerned with line twisting?

    @mxjunkie 3 роки тому +3

    Nice fish Chris. Awesome video as always. You using 40# leader even with the live bait to get the fish up in the boat within 5 min. The yellows dont seem to be line shy with the 40#?

    • @chrisblevinsfishing
      @chrisblevinsfishing  3 роки тому +3

      Ya this was on 40# mono leader on the three way swivel. I will hardly ever drop down to thirty unless I have suuuuuper clear water, or if I am targeting halibut. I don't know about how line shy they are, but it goes back to my philosophy about catching big fish. I am trying to land the biggest fish out there. If that means I get less bites, so-be-it. Would you rather catch three small yellows, on get broke off or chewed through on the big ones? Or get less small bites, but be able to land the 70# white seabass when it decides to bite? I sacrifice bites to ensure I have the firepower to land whatever I can hook into. It's funny how that works. I have friends who are more in the "light line, more bites" camp. They get busted off by big stuff all the time, then they will make excuses like "it was a black" or "probably a shark". I guarantee they are losing the biggest trophy bites they have gotten. Thanks for watching Graham!

    • @grahamtrimper
      @grahamtrimper 3 роки тому

      You like the dropper loop using the spider hitch vs. the sinker off the main line with a swivel so when the fish takes the bait they don't feel the resistance of the weight ? Your thoughts ?

      Great observation Flores. Yes, I have upgraded the drag washers to Carbontex and greased them per the recommendations. These reels are awesome for kayaking, super simple and easy to maintain. Only 3 bearings and a drag washer and you have a complete rebuild. You can grab a TLD at squidco for like 100$ then I think it's 15$ for the carbontex washer. Cheers!

    Great videos, any tips on rigging for greenbacks? Spanish macs were everywhere over the weekend. Seems like they're not as hardy for dropper or flylining

    • @markr9312
      @markr9312 3 роки тому +2

      Don't be shy about using Spanish. Some days that's all you can find. I'm one of those that prefers Greenbacks also because they are hardier and stronger swimmers, but the reality is that in the last 7 year, all the Yellowtail I've caught the split between which mac I was using is almost 50/50.

    • @chrisblevinsfishing
      @chrisblevinsfishing  3 роки тому +2

      Greenbacks been tough to find lately, but in general I will find the GB in deeper water than spanish. Also a larger sibiki may help. Another thing thing you can do is try a megabait or similar jig sometimes the big greenies will eat the jig better than the sibiki.

      Hi Juicy. I replied to you comment on another video. La Jolla shores boat launch is a well known and very crowded spot. I launch with my drive in, and rudder down. I'll wade out to thigh deep water, pop in the drive and drop the rudder. Then I will wait for the lull in the waves between sets and punch out with the drive. Always stash your fish finder below deck in a dry bag for the launch, no matter how small it seems. As far as fishing tips, I have a couple hours of content here with lots of tips. My kayak is a 10 footer, just wanted to know if you’ve seen any smaller kayaks than hobies out there? Thanks

    • @chrisblevinsfishing
      @chrisblevinsfishing  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks for watching Phil. First thing you should know is, even guys with big battleships like the PA14 are still intimidated to go out there. You won't hear lots of people talk about it, but there is an initial fear threshold you have to break through. Same with like snorkeling and surfing. It's all part of fishing the big water, where we aren't the apex predators.
      As far as your gear being legit, 10 foot is pretty small. However it is all relative to the weight capacity of the kayak and how much gear you bring. Bring your PFD, bring a VHF radio if you have one, and pack light for the first couple trips. I don't bring a ton of gear with me. Stay well below the max payload of the boat and you will be fine dude. Pick a weekend morning to launch and you will have 20 guys at the launch with you, many of whom have the same reservations you do about getting out there on the ocean. If you can find a buddy to go with great, but just hanging at the launch on a saturday you will meet more than enough people how are in the "same boat" so to speak. hahahah Cheers Phil!

      I can attest to the initial apprehension. I got my first PA14 in 2015 with every intent to fish La Jolla. My first trip wasn’t until November 2019. At the very least, beach launch a couple of times to build confidence. For you first trip, launch with a friend or go out on the weekend so that there are plenty of fellow angler’s to help out in case of an emergency. Just rip the bandaid of and do it...you won’t regret it. Good luck!

      Thanks for the feedback, I welcome that kind of comment. My editing software is super basic, so I don't have a lot of control over the audio. I definitely want the music to be in the background and not overpowering. Also, I have to search copyright free music which is tedious. Hence the reason why I reuse 3 or 4 of the same tracks. Upping my audio game is on my agenda for sure. Cheers!
