- There was so much news this week! So much so, that we decided to basically split the podcast into three different segments. First, the Waveform crew talk about the news of the week including the Nothing Phone 2a, Macbook Air updates, and the Samsung Ring. Then, Andrew and David react to Marques giving us all of the news about the new Rivian R2, R3, and R3X before we jump into an interview that Marques had with three of the minds behind OpenAI's Sora! Of course, we close out the episode with trivia chaos. Enjoy!

As someone that had so much anxiety and nervousness when getting up in front of people or talking in an interview, I feel for this guy. Don’t beat up on yourself, if you’re reading these comments. It’s not easy to do if you’re not taught how to give a proper interview on video and how to deal with your nerves.
Either that or they’re not real and all AI avatars.
R3 is the car design I've been waiting years for - not kidding. They absolutely nailed it and it's going to be my next car. BRING BACK SMALLER CARS

Me too. That acquisition came out of nowhere and it may have big implications for the camera industry since Nikon now has those patents and RED’s new global shutter sensor.

Nikon actually has nothing to gain from Red, on the tech or manufacturing front. They are buying their patents and market position, as well as the know-how of key staff. In the mid-term, it's unlikely the Red brand, or even the Red designs will survive. Nikon is in this game to bring its own brand, in a credible way, in the territory where Sony has a strong foothold. Red's pseudo-rebel culture has no fit in Nikon's DNA.
They have a lot to gain didn't you forget the lawsuit against them, versus red on in camera compressed raw smh 🤦♂🤦♂@@phpn99 I hope nikon will put to rest red patent trolling
@@phpn99I don't think that's a given. Other than ego, there's little to gain from /embracing and extinguishing/ a rival when you're in a highly contested market that you don't dominate. In this episode, we've learned Samsung owns all the car speakers, but still keeps separate brands. There likely will be redundancies - but if they try to go too lean, that will hurt that know-how of key staff. If they cannibalize RED's designs - that comes at the cost of the market position. And while it's hard to predict with company culture, I don't see any benefit to proactively changing that group's culture either.
Even if the products were interchangeable (and they're not), there's still really no business reason to kill the RED brand or products and replace them unless either RED or Nikon are independently unsustainable businesses. Theoretically possible, very unlikely in the medium term (not on purpose at least).
Oura ring required you to pay for a monthly subscription to use it. Samsung's ring will probably be a one time purchase which is a huge advantage for them

Dude yes these subscription models on hardware are so annoying, I was debating getting a whoop band but just got a garmin instead because it couldn’t stomach the fact that regardless of how much money I gave them I would never really “own” it
Only for the latest gen ring. It was kinda inevitable as everything is going for sub models to make any money. They don't manufacture the rings in China, so they have to recoup that somewhere too. Not an excuse, but just a good thing in general, being a somewhat responsible employee locally.
@@RudyOMP STARTING? They've been a disease ever since companies started trying to compete with Netflix (when Netflix itself was to try and eliminate a much larger issue). What these companies don't seem to understand is that people can only justify paying for one, maybe two, three, MAYBE four subscriptions. Depending on the price, obviously. It's one thing to ask $2 or $5 a month from someone and another for it to be $20 or $40. Some things are ridiculous. It's why I have so much respect for companies that have lifetime 'subscriptions' and allow a larger purchase. Freedom of choice is important and it should be an option. It earns them less money generally, which is why they don't do it, but it's such a horribly anti-consumer business practice. Ugh, sorry. I could rant about subscriptions for ages.

Hey David, around 24:35 you mentioned the lowest iPhone brightness being too high. If you go into settings and find the reduce white point and set it to your preferred value, and add it as as an accessibility shortcut in settings, you can toggle for high and low brightness essentially. It’s how I combat Apple’s high, lowest brightness at night.
Just tried to comment on this but think my inclusion of a link got me marked for review 🙈 This is how I deal with it too, and you can make it more convenient by creating a shortcut to toggle the setting on and off, then bind that shortcut to the triple-back-tap accessibility option; so now I just tap the back of my phone 3 times to drop or raise the base brightness of the screen.

I have it turn on automatically at a specific time each night and then off in the morning.

The Harmon Kardon talk was fun for me. Harmon international used to do QA testing or car infotainment systems for BMW, GM, Mercadesz and Hyundai..I interned for them working mostly on BMW and Hyundai. I left around the time Apple Car play was coming and Android Auto and said when I worked there "our jobs are going to go away once these get good"... that office no longer exists. Idk if they do any testing still, but they had us in NJ near Philly and NYC mostly for maps testing but who doesn't use apple or Google maps lol
R2 is an easy choice, but that R3X? Matte black with a little lift 🔥
Ehh 2026 is a long way away. There will likely be a lot more options including an updated model Y (like highland) and maybe a Tesla compact

@@saile_1004 Yeah their quality was absolute garbage a few years ago but not so much any more. I think this skews people perception somewhat. Just picked up a second model Y in December and it was pretty much flawless. As for materials and creekyness of the cabin I bet this will be improved significantly in a updated Model Y. I got a chance to test drive a highland Model 3 and the cabin was much nicer and super quiet, almost eerily quiet like a library. Its so good I would probably take an upgraded model 3 over the current model Y.
@5893MrWilson the square back of the r2 and the framed doors are my reason for choosing it over the Y.
If I'm going to give up my Stealth 3 to drive a crossover, I want all the practicality I can get and no more frameless windows for me.

Pro tip: if you want your iPhone screen even darker, you can go to accessibility settings and turn on “reduce white point” followed by setting the slider to as lowest as possible.
Then you can trigger it with triple click or back tap.
R3 is my favorite Rivian so far.
The old OnePlus was so popular and desired by many in India because It had all top features except for the cameras.
Nothing phone 2a will be a success if they provide more units for the 12th March sale.

R2 and R3(X) really feel like they'd sit much happier here in Europe than the R1 range which are absolutely huge cars by our standards.
Cars in Europe are getting bigger. EV9 is here too now, etc.

(24:30) There's a setting for Reducing White Point on the iPhone, and you can toggle it on and off with a button press (I use three presses of the Lock button as my toggle). It's usually on as my default, and I only toggle it off to look at an image close to full brightness or when I need to scan something on my phone at check-out or entering an event.
the r3 taillight is the best part, the weird part is the front still looking like the bigger vehicles. Which they made it slicker at the front.

As a Maverick owner, I use my bed more often than I ever thought I would. From buying furniture at IKEA to picking up a new shed at Costco, the bed is soooooo handy. An R2T would make perfect sense in the future.
That probably won’t happen or won’t for a long while considering Rivian’s financial struggles and difficulty scaling production
I think the R1T is about the same size as the Maverick already. I can see a cheaper pickup for sure but a smaller one starts getting impractical I think.

24:50 in Display & Text Size settings on iPhones/possibly iPads you can lower the white point which helps a lot at night. Super handy if you read manga at night

I love the look of R3, reminds me of the mk2 gtis. The exterior looks are great
For the small model (R3) they could have tweaked the lights to further to differentiate it from the larger Rivians. The rear light-bar looks a bit too chunky on the small model. Overall the car has a nice shape, but the lights, I would have liked tweaked. R3 would probably look amazing with slightly smaller circular front lights to lean even further into the retro vibe.

I instantly fell in love with the R2 and put in a pre-order. If the specs end up being what they're saying they'll be, I'm definitely going to swap my M3 for it.
Also, the reservation is only $100, not $1000 like the guys are talking about. That makes it way less of a big deal to give them the money this far ahead of time.
24:36 David, you can decrease the white point in the iphone in settings to get the phone even dimmer, and it looks better as well imo.
If you have a problem with iPhone min brightness, turn on reduce white point in accessibility settings, and set it as your accessibility shortcut. This makes it so the screen gets super dim if you triple press the power button.

24:43 David you can try reducing white point in accessibility settings a little bit which will make brightness at lower level a bit less bright, but won’t make a lot of difference to high brightness since the screens are super bright. This workaround saved my eyes 😅.

24:30 Iphones can go dimmer if you want, but its a little more complicated. You need to activate Settings>Accessibility>Display & Text Size>Reduce White Point. You can also select how much this "feature" will lower your screen brightness

I really like how the R3 and R3X look, especially the big tail light and the seats in the R3X. I hope they don't change a thing, EXCEPT adding YELLOW REAR BLINKERS (it's illegal in certain countries to have red rear blinkers...it didn't used to be this way).

24:35 @David I've experience the same issue with my iPhone 15 Pro in light mode. You can use the zoom accessibility feature to lower brightness even lower while still zoomed out which has basically solved my issues with the lowest brightness. Just lookup a guide on how to turn the feature on "Use Zoom to add low light filter"

I saved $400 by getting the M2 Air at Best Buy. So I spec’ed out the 15” and I absolutely love it. It was a MASSIVE upgrade from my 2017 MacBook Pro. I am so happy.

I LOVE the styling of the R3. I've been eyeing the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and I prefer the styling, though the headlights look a little weird for some reason.
R2 is basically a 3rd gen EV 4runner. And the R3/X was a absolute nastolgic surprise. Pure brilliance. RJ, you've earned your rest. Excellent job Rivian!
The openAI interview looks like it was made in Sora. Definitely a bit of a trip to the uncanny valley in there.
You can make the iPhone screen very dark with the reduce white point accessibility setting. Also, using the color filters in accessibility set to red is nice at night or in dark settings. Blue menu buttons disappear though
I feel like back-right/front-right should be the standard location for charging ports to accommodate parallel park charging locations in cities. Being on the left makes it compatible with only locations with parking lot style charging locations.
R3X looks so dope!
I'm genuinely considering the R3X. If its out in 2026 or near then, I'll be in the market of a utilitarian car, but still something fun. It reminds me of Group B rally cars and I'm down for it.
Highly doubt it will be out in 2026 in any meanfull volume. Rivians new cars look awesome but by then Tesla model Y will be get an update and there may be a "model 2" so these mostly seem like they will be obsolete day one even if they stick to the time line.

I use one of my Mac mini M1s just for work, which consists of Chrome, Excel, and Word. The 8GB 128GB model works flawlessly and runs butter smooth. I can’t imagine needing to upgrade it until they end macOS upgrades. At which point I’ll get whatever base Mac mini comes with the new OS.

Well this sent me down a rabbit hole. I didn’t realise how many iconic hifi manufacturers are own by multinationals like IAG now. There are still a few private ones though - Rotel, Dali, Monitor Audio..
I use the Accessibility Shortcut in my control panel for the "Reduce White Point" feature to reduce my Iphone brightness further for night use

9:31 wait m2 air can’t have 2 external displays? i was kind of leaning towards buying that since it’s cheaper now, but 2 external displays is like a basic requirement for me at the moment. I have a displaylink though, I’m guessing that should be enough?
Rivian could easily sell a bluetooth speaker as an accessory so you can put it inside one of the 2 new glove boxes for those who feel like they are missing out.
