@@bigdata_ibm Thank you for your point of view, but I sincerely disagree. What you are describing in my view is a critical thinking deficiency of the listeners. Context matters whether it is a joke or not. Reading and interpreting anything without context is an education problem. Obviously yes conscientiousness of leaders matters, but blocking or preventing leaders for saying what they really mean in a sort of nobles oblige as commented by Ellis is only asking for two things: 1. Censorship and 2. Dishonesty and Deceit. Which is exactly what's happening today with most politicians. People smell the BS from a big distance. So no. I prefer integrity over those two. I prefer understanding that these people in power are humans and make mistakes and shouldn't be taken for granted all the time than not knowing if anything that these people say is truthful. If a person cannot exercise critical thinking in understanding the context and situations in which something was said, that is a problem of the listener.

52:45 The lawsuit complains about Apple blocking new (US America based) Superapps from the Appstore, which some companies developing such apps showed. Wechat being on the Appstore is not contradictory to this. In my opinion its more of a symptom of how hard Apple is trying to secure the Chinese market.
It actually proves the contrary. When they have to compete they allow it. When they are in the lead they block.
Where I live (Victoria, Australia) , you can only tap to pay for public transport with Android phones, not iPhone, because the government on principle refuses to give a cut of the fees to Apple

From what I understand, the complaint regarding "super apps" is that Apple's practices hurt the potential development of new super apps in the US, not that App Store rules are preventing users from paying their phone bills in China via the WeChat app. In fact, I think all of the DoJ's points relate to Apple's practices stifling growth and innovation, not just that they want to protect their walled garden. In that sense, the emails may sound juicy, but the question is whether Apple's desire and efforts to keep its users, a common sense move by any company, is actually hindering potential advancements.

About the NFC chip thing, I have no idea how that works in US, but here in India, we have multiple fintech Start ups competing against each other, which leads to a good rewards system. I did not know that I cannot use a NFC card thing on an iPhone, without using Apple Pay, because you actually want a specific app to use your card from so you get rewards that cater to your requirements.

The Apple watch notification restriction is a Garmin choice. I just got an Amazfit (with an iPhone) that lets you choose which apps to allow them.

Thanks Ellis for the Autopilot hierarchy breakdown, seems Marques has had it confused for a little while. By the way, as someone with FSD Beta 12.0, it’s very impressive but definitely not all the way there yet, I think the guys should do a revisit to the state of FSD in a future video
Just want to add that I think it's actually on garmin for lacking individual notifications. I have a coros watch and can customize (not all apps but all communication apps) which notifications I receive on my iphone.
I believe the notification issues is a garmin issue. I use an amazfit fitness band and within the app, I can control individual notifications (per app) sent to to watch. I currently use a iPhone 13
For the complaint regarding apple not letting other smart watches do some basic things -

I’m always fascinated by the argument that teens by and large want iPhones for the green vs blue bubble argument. I worked in high schools for 6.5 years- in the Bay Area, and now in middle school for the past 2.5 years in SoCal and I’d say students were evenly split on Android or Apple phones, with maybe a few more android users if anything. And they didn’t care about bubbles because none of them text that way. They all use apps whether it be snap, IG, fb messenger, or now mostly discord to message. So I have to wonder when the data was collected bc if anything, I think teens now are walled into one or the other moreso because that’s what their parents use and then buy them and their parents use the default messaging options more than anything…
Man, I can't wait for my year-end UA-cam watch time stats. I literally finished the entire episode while enjoying my break, and every section is very interesting to watch. I didn't even notice that it is a 2-hour episode.

For smartwatches, why does my Garmin work better on Android? What does Apple restrict what I can do with my Garmin on an iPhone? Why can’t I use my AWU with my iPad? Etc…. And all valid.
Even more egregious is I can’t update the firmware on my airpods because I don’t own any other Apple products 😂
To Adam's point : You used to be able to just set a build.prop setting in LineageOS supported phones that made them "Pixels" and got all the blocked features, including AI ones (Magic eraser on my PH-1 for example). I miss unlimited photo backups lol.
The main reason the Pixel Watch doesn't work with iPhone stems from Apple limiting other smartwatches in what they can and can't access when connected to an iPhone. The Galaxy Watches used to have an app in the Galaxy Watch 3 days but they stopped with WearOS.
It would be really awesome if David did a deep dive on transformers architecture, AI, what AI actually is buzzwords aside, machine learning, neural networking, why all the AGI and AI fearmongering is 99.99% clickbait nonsense, and why society has been reliant on "AI" for very large parts of their lives for a couple decades now. 31:18 Just a quick observation. I have been heavily using Gemini App on my Note 20 Ultra since launch and over time I have seen all the features I use from Assistant slowly come to Gemini. It sets reminders, add stuff to my keep, controls all my home devices.... In fact from this week I can also control home devices via Gemini from lock screen as well. I have completely replaced assistent with gemini. In my experience assistant is completely integrated with Gemini. I am using regular Gemini. Great podcast guys. I love em👌

I had FSD on my first tesla. When I got my second, after owning it for a couple weeks, I missed the auto lane change so much I added Enhanced auto pilot for 6K. It's a lot of money but like a phone feature you're hooked on, It's hard to loose it. I have no regrets. Also FSD goes down to $99 a month if I ever want it.
How often are you changing lanes such that you were willing to pay 6 grand on a computer to do it for you? Say you do it once or twice each way on your commute to work. That's three times a day to twist your head and turn the steering wheel. You have weird priorities, man.
I live in Los Angeles and there are not just two lane roads everywhere. I also enjoy long road trips where it automatically gets you into the correct lane when approaching complex interchanges like in Portland or Seattle. I don't have a commute and the money is not an issue. @@cmmartti

I agree with Adam. Don't use features that you will miss if you change the device or it'll cost you monthly. For the same reason, I use Nova launcher so on all devices I just import settings and it's the same in any phone.
I have a withings smartwatch, i can choose which app get a notification pushed to the watch or not... seems like a garmin issue to me

I think the Garmin discussion around 1:05:00 is Garmin's decision and not Apple's policy. I have used a Mi Band for years with different band versions and phone OSs. Both on Android and iOS I can select individual apps that I want to receive notifications from.

Sorry but I need to make a correction and point out a mistake. In Canada when I used Fitbit a year ago you could change notifications. I went and checked with my mom’s since she still uses Fitbit and you can customize notifications.

There is a difference between the apple watch not working with Android and the android watch not working with apple because Apple is the main culprit in each.
In both scenarios, it is Apple limiting what can happen. They limit what a third party watch can do on their own platform, which means there's no incentive to making a non apple watch compatible on iPhone. And they decide not to have apple watch work on android. An apple watch could still be a legitimate smart watch on android (while obviously still be better on apple devices), but it is not possible for Android watch to be a legitimate smartwatch on iOS.
Buy the Android platform and call it good?

You’d be surprised how many people just don’t know about it. I’m in my early 30s and had no idea until my younger brother showed me it was a thing. Now my whole family uses it. If there was some kind of mass public service announcement, I think the odds are very good it would take off here too.

I use a Amazfit smartband and on iPhone the sync is always delayed and not up to date, it's either failed to sync or the phone has different data from the band (might be delayed). Not a huge deal but that time I really thought my band is broken until I switched to Android and it synced in a snap.
(Android user) Funny experience, went to the Apple store to try the vision pro. Made me do a face assessment to see what's the best fit. At the end of the demo, to save my customization details for the fit, needed an IPhone!!!
That's how much they force you to be a part of their eco system.
They’re spot on that it’s not so much apple having extra features with the Apple Watch and iOS, but more so that they actively sabotage their devices to work with android.
Apple shouldn’t have to port over special features to be compatible with android but they should definitely not be sabotaging their devices from being used in coordination with other devices. Like imagine they did that with iTunes and connecting your iPhone to your PC and it was so glitchy your music only transferred over half of the time

@@Artofcarissa Yes, Apple prevents other smart watches from having the same features as the Apple watch and that should absolutely change. I however asked how Apple sabotages the Apple Watch when it comes to Android.
Apple is preventing competition on their platform but not adding android support for the Apple Watch is not the same thing at all.
The Apple Watch isn't an essential device nor is it the only smart watch, they are not required to provide Android support for it.
How does not adding support for Android = sabotage?
Adam and Andrew: As a Garmin watch & iPhone user agreed that it drives me INSANE that Focus Modes/Individual App notifications cannot be updated to match the phone’s settings. Pls let us at least get that fixed
Some watches can use the voice assistant to reply but not directly on another watch. The garmin venu 3 is one of these examples.

Hey MKBHD super underrepresented question about FSD, isn't Elon just charging FSD people to become crash test dummies?
Non FSD cars collect data in the fleet. People who pay for FSD don't have full security and many people feel the stress when snapping the steering wheel when FSD makes a wrong turn. Driving themselves to the destination feels much less stressful than an AI toddler making moves... FSD feels like an half baked product at full price tag 🏷️
being able to have an iPad for drawing, a Garmin watch for my smart watch and the newest pixel for my phone with probably air pods as the headphones without any ecosystem issues/limits out of the box would be so nice

ngl that garmin example hit the nail on the coffin. The apple watch offers the ability to silence notifications from certain distracting apps. This is available within the watch app and not on global iOS settings.
Since Garmin doesn't have access to settings of the watch app, it cannot perform the same operations.
Apple however lets other apps access and write to health. So incase you use garmin connect or strava for activity tracking, it can read/write data to Health and hence if you decided to move away from apple tmrw, you can easily do that.
Downloading music to apple watch was another example. Apple used to not allow Spotify to do that and now they do. So intentionally obscuring the experience of other third party competing apps definitely needs to be a cause of concern if and only if you qualify as a "platform" which Apple is.

The same reason Apple bans "super apps" like WeChat is the same reason you can't get ad-block on iOS Firefox. U-block origin is run by being downloaded and executed by Firefox, Apple considers that as downloading and running non reviewed apps/code, which is what DOJ is suing about. I hope they win.

I think many tasks involving the understanding of a person’s lifestyle and behaviors can use on-device information. If I remember correctly, Apple’s map suggestions use a local algorithm that makes use of locally stored location data

1:21:00 The people in the garden already aren't the only ones that matter. Every year, new people get their first piece of technology. Changing what options are available to them will over time change the percentage of people trapped in the garden. some will leave, others will use apps and products from a diverse set of companies that together suit their needs best. The allowance to let people enter and exit as They choose Will make a difference in time.
What the past couple of weeks has shown is the vast majority of people dont understand what anti-competitive behavior means. Just switch the word Apple with Microsoft and see how quickly people's views change on the subject.
Microsoft had 93% of the market in computers in 1998. Apple has 20% of the phone market in 2023. In US monopoly law that difference is crucial. Microsoft was a true monopoly that used their power to put other companies out of business like Netscape. Apple is not a monopoly and publish rules for their App Store that applies to millions of developers.
People also don’t understand the meaning of the word monopoly.
Monopoly doesn’t mean majority of market share. It means having exclusive control over a market or commodity.
Apple has no control over either of those, so the basis of the lawsuit is off. Even market share doesn’t mean anything, since that doesn’t count the amount of people who actually own devices, only the devices shipped or available in stores. There are more android devices being used in the US than iOS.
If the US wants to sue Apple for anti-competitive behavior, do that. But antitrust suit is just overreach.

I think it was last year's IO where Sundar or someone on stage mentioned how they have collaborated with apple to make sure the airTag stalker thing notifies Android users too. So I believe Google wouldn't shy away to say that they are partnering with apple.
They just prolly won’t say it before Apple’s event which is in June and Google IO is in May
The thing about apples garden is that it's a wall garden. If it were an open ecosystem like Samsung or even OnePlus granted they're not great ecosystems but if it were just a little bit more open then they wouldn't have this lawsuit
Samsung's is the best ecosystem by far and you have all the options that other Android users have
That Nfc thing is particularly annoying if you’re living in a country where apple pay isn’t supported like where I live. I used to have an android phone and I used to have an option of using google pay or 3 - 4 other wallet apps which supported that feature. I was actually surprised when I found it all those other wallet apps don’t offer the feature on ios just because apple is too stubborn to allow other apps to use nfc.

Re: Apple Suit. I found it funny that as the conversation went on, talking how Apple’s dominance is holding back competition, the examples used for the suffering side are GIANT companies themselves that have industry dominance of their own. Poor WeChat. Poor Epic. Poor Google. Poor Garmin. Poor Banks.
Cynical answer: yo, that's the only reason our corrupt capitalist government is stepping in. The "Justice" dept. is 100% working as intended.
'00s answer: The fact that these HUGE companies can't compete illustrates the problem. How could a relatively smaller market player possibly emerge with a new market space on this platform [because iPhone has so much dominance, it is not a product, or a device, it should be regulated like a platform to build on, see EU regulation] if even these huge companies can't make a deal to get in on the action? Apple isn't even letting corruption open their strangle hold or else they would have let Google get Wear OS watches working decently on iOS while quietly paying apple like a $1billion, like they do with Safari search. But nope! Apple is committed to crushing any other player in the American cell phone/personal electronics market.
If Apple were less anti-competitive we might see innovation that benefits the consumer/voter. Especially since we have emails from Apple execs talking about how they don't need to innovate anymore. It's really obvious that there's a good chance Apple's monopoly is slowing innovation and therefore might be hurting consumers by charging the same amount [or more] for new phones that are deliberately not advancing as quickly year over year as they could be.

For the record, I am 100% agnostic in this argument.
My customer experience as an Apple user has been extraordinary and they have earned my loyalty. I am also a business owner who gets squeamish when I think that somehow the more successful I am, the more at risk I am of having to work with my competition or the upstarts who are nipping at my heals.
But I also know damned-well that I am trapped with Apple; I can’t even imagine how much work it would be to switch away from them now.
Having said that, I guess the challenging part of the argument about 'stifling innovation' is that none of the examples anyone is using are actually ‘innovation’.
Garmen would be innovating if they made a watch of that caliber that didn’t need to sync with a phone. They made a watch like all the others (that has a few novel features) but requires the heavy-lifting of a secondary device to actually do the computing and communicating. A device they’ve never even bothered to make. That’s not innovative.
A bank wants to make a ‘version’ of the AppleWallet to do exactly what the AppleWallet does. The future of that is what we now face with parking apps or streaming apps; no innovation, just too many companies doing the exact same thing to the consumer’s detriment.
Samsung isn’t innovating by making phones that are iPhone clones. Google isn’t innovating any more than Apple is with minor feature upgrades to their operating systems.
WeChat did something innovative. Absolutely. I don’t know enough about WeChat, nor what its iOS limitations are, to comment, but security aside, I can understand why Apple might be concerned about its devices becoming nothing more than a pile of glass and silicone that powers someone else’s market monopolization.
I understand wholly that there might be a ton of ‘innovation’ that isn’t happening because of these limitations (and we can’t name them because they don't yet exist). So I’d love to hear from developers who have wild ideas that just aren’t possible under this paradigm. I’d love to see what I’m missing. But as it stands right now, I just see headaches and higher costs in a future where other big companies have whittled away at the nice safe simple walled garden I get to lie in. I'm happy here! Show me what I'm missing. Show me real compelling innovation. If I have to wait unit DOJ wins the suite to see what happens, cool. But I'd love for there to be THAT kind of discussion, not what sound like Epic talking points.
In my opinion, the most overlooked aspect of the Apple lawsuit is how their anti-competitive measures likely stifle innovation. Consider this: if other wallet app developers or banks could create their own NFC-enabled wallets, wouldn't the cost of goods and services purchased on iPhones be affected? Currently debit and credit card fees are high, and these costs are passed on to consumers. Imagine if Mastercard, American Express, or Visa had their own wallets. These companies would likely compete on cost and features, eliminating double charging. Interestingly, the South African government is testing a free, no-transaction-fee payment protocol. However, this wouldn't work if Apple insists on taking a cut from every transaction. As a seller, this cost would inevitably be passed on to the consumer. This logic could apply to many other issues raised in the lawsuit.

I have experienced many systems that are a lot better than FSD at a lower price… Mercedes version in Europe and NIO’s alternative. The American version of autopilot may be better but the European version is just sad and way too expensive…
@@Kurre.I’m referring to V12 FSD, not autopilot. To my knowledge, Tesla does not offer FSD in Europe due to regulations. I’ve had FSD beta since 2021 and it’s always changing.

1:38:41 i think the idea at least is that if people try it more people will be so impressed by it that they’ll buy/subscribe to it. if they don’t, it’s purely because the product itself doesn’t reach the value prop, in which case they will have to adjust price or improve the product.
i personally don’t want to pay $12k or $15k extra even if fsd worked way better than it currently does, nor would i pay 2.4k/yr for a subscription. i really think the only way for them to get more users is to reduce it to $50-99/m subscription (or have an FSD purchase tied to a Tesla account not a Tesla vehicle).
I think the real juiciest part of the DOJ suit will be when Apple’s lawyers ask the DOJ legal team what phones they use personally. And watching them all admit that they used iPhones and Mac’s in preparation for the trial.

Apple's malicious compliance in the EU is particularly annoying. They smugly act as if our laws are some sort of starting point of negotiations. They are not, they should respect our autonomy to create rules for competijtion in our own territory.

The Apple Watch shouldn’t work with an Android phone because it’s an iPhone accessory. That’s like complaining that the Nintendo Switch Joycons don’t work with the PS5.

Apple was forced by EU to switch to USBC charger. you cant just lock all your devices to only work in your network, it crosses the line of anti-consumer laws. Government has to step in.

Bluetooth has connection standards that can be accomplished with hardware.
I hate my iPhone, but I love my Apple Watch, iPad, Macbook... I do not have the freedom to switch with heavily truncating the devices I own.
They artificially make it difficult to accomplish regular Bluetooth standards, which they could with the flip of a switch. They are just worried of everyone like me who recognize how far the iPhone is behind in global standards, and will switch in a second.
Also opening this up will force apple to be competitive, making the iPhone better for all consumers, and make them inovate vs the entire market and not just vs last year's model.
The only thing this does is removes the suppriority factor of having an expensive phone.
@@laraava You can also connect an Apple Watch to an android phone and just like an Apple Watch connected to an android phone, Joycons connected to a windows computer it has limited features. You can’t update the Joycon firmware on anything but a Switch, and you can’t connect them as a single controller without third party software. Nintendo didn’t provide driver support for the Joycons, Microsoft did that.
Using a monopolistic power in the smart phone market, to make other smart watch experiences worse in iPhone when compare to Apple Watch… that is abusing market position…
Apple fan boy will say that apple device works better together because it is all part of the apple ecosystem system… and gov can’t stop company from how they want their eco system to work because they build that eco system… but what people need to realize is that just because apple add / build something to their “eco” system doesn’t mean they own all the market segment that their eco system covers. Just because apple build a smartphone and iOS, doesn’t mean they can use their power with the phone and iOS and limits other company entrance in other market (like web browser engine, smartwatch, messaging / sms, payment, etc), if they do that then they are abusing their power in one market to give themselves advantage in another market… and this is exactly what apple is doing.
