  • What is pseudogout: how does it presents, how do we diagnose it and how we treat it?
I find myself making a diagnosis of pseudogout quite often in my rheumatology practice. Patients and sometimes, their health care professionals, do not know much about it. In this episode we review what pseudogout is and the goal of treatments.

I recently experienced a bout of Pseudogout about four weeks after having knee surgery for a partially torn medial meniscus. The pain and swelling was swift and excruciating that lasted for 9 days. The only medicine that helped with the pain was morphine which was given me after visiting emergency at the hospital. The bed part was that my surgeon and primary care physician only provided theories as to the causes and that to date there was no known medication for this condition. Yes, I am over 70 and have been active all my life in athletics, etc. there just isn’t enough research on this condition. By the way, I am not heavy as I weigh 149 lbs at 5’7”. Any more ideas on your part? thank you.

Have you been checked for Iron Overload or Hereditary Hemochromatosis? Get your ferritin level checked. Hereditary Hemochromatosis can cause pseudogout.
