  • If you're plagued with Jackdaws, Starlings and Pigeons hoovering up your expensive wild bird feed, then this gadget could solve your problem.
It's marketed as a 'ground sanctuary', but we fitted ours on a bird table to avoid attracting vermin.
It's simply a wire cage with a mesh wide enough to admit all small birds but exclude the larger ones. They take a while to get used to it, but then there's no holding them. At this time of year (May/June) they're so desperate for feed for their young that they have no inhibitions about visiting 'jail' at all !
It fits neatly into a suitable sized plastic garden gravel tray which is screwed to a wooden platform on top of the pole.
The small tray contains live mealworms (from Vinehouse Farm) which we get by the truckload via Postie, who must think we have a small zoo.
We know whenever the worms run out because either Robbie or the Great Tit flutters up and down in from of the conservatory window, (greedy little ******).
