  • Here's a video of my DOF Reality H6 motion platform after being modified with Planetary Geared Motors to eliminate the jerkiness during subtle changes in pitch and roll. This is caused by "cogging", where the motor steps from one commutator segment to the next when making partial revolutions. This spoils the immersion, especially in VR, because the seat is jerking quite noticably when you roll or pitch the aircraft very slowly.
Thanks to an idea from "Robert WL" on the DOF Reality Builders Facebook Group it is now cured. The new motors have a 4.25:1 reduction ratio, so the motor spins faster for the same degree of pitch or roll movement, so it now "jumps" more smoothly over the commutator segments.
The standard DOf Reality rigs have always been fine with driving sims, because their movements are hardly ever slow, so the juddering doesn't occur.
The Sim being used is xPlane11, over Norwich airport UK, and I apologise for the atrocious flying, but my excuse was that I was trying to show how well the seat follows the aircraft motion, and with no judder from the motors, (with thre two front right ones shoing in the inset.)

Paul, I am trying to reach you because I just ordered a DOF H6, and would greatly appreciate more information about swapping out the motors for the Premium Planetary Gear motors you mentioned? I would like to order some and need the model# if you can provide? I also am planning on installing a swivel base for the seat as you did. Pete

hello i love your set up , im looking into getting a h3 or h6 did you upgrade from a h3 to h6 ? if so was it worth the upgrade ? from most of the vids ive seen , it seems like the h3 has more degrees of movement the h6 seems slower or less responsive for racing games

A tricky question to answer ! I've had both and I found the H3 very efficient, being balanced on a UJ and only needing power to tilt, rather than lift and drop. The H6 however, has a much wider combination of movements, up/down, sway left/right, surge forward/backward, which the H3 can't do. I found both the 3 and the 6 were very "active" in driving sims.
