I love when Teddy finds out how complex the drums are. The part where he asks how they get it so fast, that isn't the hands, it is the feet of the drummer. That is the double bass. The drum part to this song was written by the drummer that passed away and the song is about him. They had to bring in one of the best drummers in the world to be able to play the parts that were written by the Rev (drummer that passed away).

There won't be much to explain about nightmare, because the man who wrote it passed away in 2009. Jimmy wrote the majority of the album and had finished his last song originally titles "Death" 3 days before he had an accidental overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol. Sevenfold later changed the title of Death to "Fiction" after their fallen brother. The drummer behind the studio release of the nightmare album is dream theatres former drummer Mike Portnoy, a man who Jimmy Idolised and was inspired by. You can hear this inspiration in a song from the City of Evil album titled "Beast and the harlot". There's a lot of theory of why Jimmy died with some saying it was a suicide attempt, but the band confirmed that jimmy was just trying to have a good time, he was the party animal who could and would start a party out of nothing. In order to fully understand the reason and story for nightmare, we'd have to go back to 2009, when jimmy was still alive. In terms of the mastery behind the drumming in the solo, Mike does a simple quadruplet on the double kick drum which can be achieved fairly easily.
The name avenged sevenfold is actually from the Bible. Many of their songs are based on it too, like the story of Cain and Abel, the city of Babylon, etc. But even deathcore bands often sing of things like this, of recognizing the destruction we cause and the result of morality or mortality and soul and such. You would be surprised just how many bands, from softer rock down to deathcore talk about the Bible, faith, being a good person, and all sorts of things like that. Most bands include “satanic” imagery as a shock factor, or even warning against that kind of path. But those who don’t actually listen to the lyrics or just look at images will write it off as being pro satan ( which does exist too). But many times also, it’s not about worshiping Satan to cause pain and suffering, but what he represents, which is the pursuit of knowledge, and taking agency upon yourself for your own actions, choices and fate. Versus being good simply because there is an invisible man who will judge you, so you’re being good out of fear instead, not necessarily because it’s the right thing to do.
You’ve definitely at least watched a few videos on Satanism or are a Satanist because you actually know what Satanism is about so I appreciate that lol
Hey Teddy! I am 100% a music nerd, I listen to anything that’s good, period. I’ve been watching reaction videos and I have to say, “I ENJOY YOUR CHANNEL THE MOST “. Some other channels are very technical, which is great, but not very emotional, some others are very much about the vocals, or the music, or arraignment and some others are just about what they feel without knowing much about the technical aspect. Your channel is the perfect balance between music, lyrics, vocals and emotional reactions, from getting super excited and hyped to crying in a couple of them because the lyrics got you…. Extremely entertaining and fun to watch, thanks for the work you are putting out there man! That being said, you need to check out a couple of the newer bands that are doing an extremely amazing job, “Sleeptoken” and “Porcupine Tree” This one is a must: the song Sober by Tool, technically one of the best bands in history. I know that you really like “Evanescence”, you will go crazy about “Nightwish”
I agree with this comment!!! Your reactions are very genuine and well informed Teddy! Also, the suggestions that @andreso7070 gave you are amazing. Nightwish is an amazing band and the live version of Sober is out of this world.
Coming from a vocalist there are a lot of subtle usages of tone and annunciation within the song that are actually a lot more emotionally indicative than what may be immediately recognized on the surface
Avenged Sevenfold live is insane. Saw them in concert 2 years after The Rev (Jimmy the drummer) had passed and damn. "So Far Away" was tributed to him and the passion is insane with all their songs when live. They were all childhood friends. "Bat Country" is also amazing by them.
I actually think his voice is pretty unique. It's got a rasp to it. You can definitely tell an Avenged song by the singer. And the drummer, The Rev, had insane double bass speed. He's since passed.
Part of that is because he destroyed his vocal chords early in their career and went to Axl Rose's vocal coach to get his voice back. His vocals were way more aggressive on the first couple albums, but he was doing it wrong and messed his voice up.
Watched their concert in Kuala Lumpur 8 years ago and it still feels like yesterday. For my first ever concert, it was nothing more that I could have asked for.
A lot of metal lyrically deals, with loss, depression, morality, love, seizing the day, etc. There are bands like Brojob and We Butter the Bread with Butter, that lean more into having a laugh with the subject matter of their music. One of WBTBWB's biggest songs is called "20km/h" and it's an entire metal song about riding a scooter and how cool it is (in German). There's every flavor of metal out there, and you'll probably never get bored of exploring new sub-genres.
That’s right Teddy. Double kick my friend. Let the feet do the talking 🤘 Hey there’s plenty to like about this band mate. I see someone here suggested So Far Away. Give it a spin mate. Very emotive. Keep up the good work brother 👍
7:05 I love that YOU pull that meaning from the lyrics/song, because to me it also hits deep for a totally different reason. But the fact that it resonates so deeply within both of us and for different reasons man, that's just really cool lol. Music is something seriously special.
Very glad to see you branching out. Avenged Sevenfold is pretty legendary in this genre. Talented talented group !!!! Your analysis of the song is quite spot on!!! It isn't so much about the real hell. It is more to do with the hell that we each have in our own mind!
It’s so refreshing to find more and more people learning that metal isn’t what they thought it was. Most metal is very deep in its lyrics. Not evil. I grew up in the 80s where us metalheads were called devil worshippers and all kinds of stuff. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Any song from Live in the LBC is awesome. In fact, if you can you should react to the whole concert. You'll see his voice live, and how great the band really is.
Check out- A Little Piece of Heaven for sure, it's an absolute masterpiece BUT just know that it was written by their late drummer after a fever dream he'd had and it was done as a Halloween EP but their label heard it and thought it belonged on the record. It's a beautiful love song/love story, well, in a way... It's also super twisted and dark lol and that goes for both lyrics and visuals which go hand in hand on this one. There are lots more too, here's a starter list. Loved the reason but i think there are others you'll enjoy way more. Keep rocking bro🤘 -Critical Acclaim -Afterlife -Unholy Confessions -Second Heartbeat -Fiction -Bat Country -Buried Alive -Welcome to the Family -Beast and the Harlot -Hail to the King -Shepherd of Fire -So Far Away -St. James

I'm so glad you changed your comment about his voice. M Shadows has an amazing distinctive voice. Definitely watch so far away if you want to see emotion
A lot of people will disagree, but as a lifelong Avenged Sevenfold fan and someone who appreciates storytelling and lyrical depth, I highly recommend you check out their newest album, Life is But a Dream…. One song that I think would blow you away with the lyricism (and instrumentals for that matter) is Cosmic. The whole album explores themes of death, free will, and existentialism, so if you do check it out, make sure you go in with that in mind!
The song was a homage to The Rev who battled with his demons, he was the drummer for the band and it was their way of expressing the emotion of the loss hench the drum kit at the end of the video. Im surprised no one has mentioned that this was their goodbye to the drummer and his battle he had. RIP THE REV A7X ❤️
I saw them in concert in Chicago. They put on a good show and on this song they had a guy that seemed to hang himself from the stage lights just prior to the strong 'Nightmare' start of the song. The guitarists are great too.
One of my favorite A7X songs my favorite line is… “ you’ve been lied to just to rape you of your sight and now they have the nerve to tell you how to feel. So sedated as they medicate your brain and while you slowly go insane they tell you “ given with the best intentions, help you with your complications!”
Please listen to "so far away", it is a tribute song to the Rev, their drummer, who sadly passed away and you can tell how emotional the whole band is throughout the song and video.
First off, I love your take on these videos/songs. I hope you fully enjoy your journey through the Metal/Rock genres and sub-genres. That said, A7X aka Avenged Sevenfold is somewhere between Heavy Metal, Progressive Metal and Alternative Metal, in my opinion. As far as the "Satanic" thoughts on rock and metal, that really just comes from older Christians not understanding it. While the saying of "Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll" is a common saying, a lot of people who are/were unfamiliar with the genres just hear screaming or see the visuals of the bands appearance or music videos and immediately hate on it thinking its of the Devil. I am sure I even heard you in one of your first metal reactions, comment and say something about thinking metal was just going to be all screaming and no real lyricism or the vocals not really going to be a thing. I feel that it is just a misunderstanding of the music from others too afraid to go out of their own comfort zone and experience new music/ideas. Seeing as you are liking metal, being a rap fan, it goes to show that giving something a chance might be worth it. Suggestion: Electric Callboy Tekkno Train/Pump It/Mindreader. Could be fun. Best wishes for you and your channel, Mate!
Ahhh, Avenged Sevenfold. This was recorded sadly after Jimmy The Rev Sullivan (drummer) passed away. The album that this song was on was a collaboration with Mike Portnoy, who's the drummer of Dream Theater. Mike was one of Jimmy's idols and took a lot of his style and inspiration from him in Avenged songs. Mike was really humbled to do this, knowing how much he meant to Jimmy.
The "lack of emotion" is probably due to the fact their drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan passed away during the recording process. They also mixed the vocals on this song (as the first single on the album) to be more haunting. The whole video is a tribute to the Rev, hence the shot of the drumkit at the end.
The drummer on this particular track is Mike Portnoy from dream theatre (progressive metal). This album was recorded after the bands drummer and childhood friend Jimmy “the rev” Sullivan had passed away. They brought in Mike after he left dream theatre to record some songs on the nightmare album while they searched for a replacement drummer and Mike has recently returned to dream Theatre. In the solo section he is actually playing double bass with his feet which is something he is known for and is common in a lot of rock and metal music.
Avenged have so many good songs, for me Coming Home is such a slept on song it has to have one of the best solos I’ve ever heard, literally 2mins of solid guitar in the middle!🤘🏼
This whole album is dedicated to their former drummer "the rev". The song "so far away" from this album is about him and how his passing has affected them in the band.
Actually as a hip hop fan, you might find a song like Brompton Cocktail from Avenged Sevenfold interesting. I wouldn't necessarily say Shadows raps in the song but they were playing with different traditional percussion instruments and trying to drive a lil influence from hip hop and reggae sonically. It sounds really polarizing explaining it but when/if you hear it, it will make sense. I think others have made great picks for songs that really flex his vocal talent. But personally as a fan of the band I don't recommend their life is but a dream album or the song A Little Piece of Heaven unless you have really taken a deeper dive. They are very polarizing pieces of material to anyone not up to speed on Avenged Sevenfold.
I'd really like you to give a listen to 'Nightwish'. They do whats called 'synphonic metal' and it sounds grand. Their most iconic live performance would be their performance of 'Ghost Love Score' they did at 2013 Wacken (metal festival). It was awesome ...
It's been a while since I've heard this song, so being exposed to it again after that was very nice along with your insights and thoughts. And as the song was starting I was finally thinking of a song that might be interesting to see your take on, that being Broken Iris' Forevermore.
The entire Nightmare album is a tribute to Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan who had passed away. Some members of the band had been friends since they were kids and his death hit them very, very hard. I've seen them live many times and they sound incredible.
Wanna feel some vocals…So Far Away was written about and for The Rev who was the drummer who died. It’s slower, but one of the most emotional songs I’ve ever heard
For the Drums to stop when he's banging on his Tom's or Snare his last hit with his sticks he just lands heavy and stays on the Tom or Snare thats how he's able to stop instantly.
So, the way they cut the drums is called a "noise gate". Basically, any noise under a certain volume is muted. Super common production trick for tight sounding drums and rhythm guitars in metal.
Great Reaction man and great tune. Yup this is hell and we are in it and we did it to ourselves through our inaction. A lot of great insight in this song, I love the lyrics.
All time favorite band for me, if you end up falling in love with them, you have a great road ahead of banger after banger after banger on every album after 7th trumpet I'd say you'd probably be able to appreciate, especially due to their lyrical content, aswell as their well known dual-guitar sound, very avenged once you hear it ín a couple songs. Ill be here for any and every future song you cover of theirs. Youre a dope dude and appreciate these breakdowns.
Hey man, by that I meant that from my journey with the band, I had a harder time getting into StST compared to all the other albums because its production quality, and the abit rough around the edges in general, OFC its the 1st album, but I love love love it still dont misunderstand. I could only REALLY appreciate StST personally after already falling in love with the band through CoE and Waking the Fallen, because even tho I will defend tracks like Warmness to my death, because its so raw and good vocally from matt. I hold that track so dear but dont think I would get the same emotional reaction hearing it if I hadnt already appreciated where they've ended up in their current level of musical prowess I suppose in general. sorry rambling, its fun talking about and I love that you challenge me on this, its honestly just easier to get into a band listening to their most "accessible" songs, like anything off nightmare or httk, even selfitled, all those albums were imo the peak like AVENGED sound quality to just dig through those albums and fall more and more in love with them. THEN after a couple albums, I just feel StST can be better appreciated, for the actual ambition it had, and how different sounding it is (in a good way). Sorry for text wall here, Idk if you know what i mean? Accessibility and ease of listening kinda reasons, compared to the "mainstream tracks" that probably get you to initally even gain an interest, if youre very new to A7X. wont wall you next msg, just dont wanna discourage you from responding to this in whatever way lol, just curious if u know what i meant by that- cus I love StST, ofc, its just maybe the odd one out in terms of it sounding alot different than they end up sounding. love to u my man, feel free to tell me one of ur takes in turn, always always just happy to talk to a7x fans, got none local heh
Ye, I know what you mean. Generally when getting into a band you have to listen to their newer stuff which is also generally more accessible and then you move backwards towards their older stuff and are really able to appreciate it. I think I first discovered A7X with "A Little Piece of Heaven" funnily enough and from there I was hooked. The strange thing about A7X is that their newest albums are also extremely experimental and rather hard to get into. CoE, Nightmare and Self-Titled are probably the best representative albums. I really can't choose a favourite album personally. Nightmare, CoE, WtF, Self-Titled, StST and The Stage all have incredible songs on them and are all incredible albums. My favourite songs are also some of their more underrated ones. "Save Me", "Sidewinder", "And All Things Will End" and the "I Won't See You Tonight" songs are all masterpieces just to name some. (Also you should really give a listen to The Rev's band Pinkly Smooth. It's just so good.)@@Spot-t

@@s0uth9arkcartman21wdym? Are you saying satanism is great? Wtf
@@s0uth9arkcartman21wdym? Are you saying satanism is great? wtf
Impressed with how well you grasped the lyrics and your interpretations were really good.
That being said, you need to check out a couple of the newer bands that are doing an extremely amazing job, “Sleeptoken” and “Porcupine Tree”
This one is a must: the song Sober by Tool, technically one of the best bands in history.
💯
Matt's voice is actually very special
Hey Teddy, This song came out just after the band lost their drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan. (one of the greatest who died to soon) . 😪
I saw them live about a month ago-finally getting to see my boy Syn play that guitar live. So flippin good.
Let the feet do the talking 🤘
Hey there’s plenty to like about this band mate. I see someone here suggested So Far Away. Give it a spin mate. Very emotive.
Keep up the good work brother 👍
Buried Alive is still one of my favorites
Would love an A7X rabbit hole please
7:05 I love that YOU pull that meaning from the lyrics/song, because to me it also hits deep for a totally different reason. But the fact that it resonates so deeply within both of us and for different reasons man, that's just really cool lol. Music is something seriously special.
Can not wait to hear more reactions of this band!
Fuck yes!!!! Seeing this pop up made me so fucking happy bro 😂 I've been suggesting this band on every comment I post to you for months lmao
Avenged sevenfold has some of the best instrumental in my opinion! I ❤ them! Great reaction!
If you put your hand on the head of a drum, it will stop the sound immediately, you can also tune your drums to be a short more tight sound.
Keep rocking bro🤘

Damn, throw him in the deep end 😂 the song is an absolute masterpiece, one of my favourites, but I'm not sure how Teddy would react to such a twisted love story 🙄😂
@@RJRXR1 which is why I made it clear not to just jump into that song without knowing what he's getting into lol and a while back I made sure to mention that song should not be his introduction into this band LMAO it can be somewhat off-putting to some 🤣
@@joshlansdown2810 I've seen so many react to this before any others, and never re visit Avenged afterwards 😩 I hate when people suggest it as an opener to the band, I'm so glad he reacted to nightmare first so we can hopefully expect more 🙏
I'm so glad you changed your comment about his voice.
No has that said that because that’s not true the rev wrote part of this song with m shadows
I saw them in concert in Chicago. They put on a good show and on this song they had a guy that seemed to hang himself from the stage lights just prior to the strong 'Nightmare' start of the song. The guitarists are great too.
I got to see them live this past weekend. EXCELLENT show! The emotion comes out in the live performance much better
Blinded in Chains, Almost Easy, M.I.A, etc. Those are really good ones!
I live for Avenged Sevenfolds melodic guitar work. My ears always feel blessed hearing them! Their songs are incredible!
One of my favorite A7X songs my favorite line is… “ you’ve been lied to just to rape you of your sight and now they have the nerve to tell you how to feel. So sedated as they medicate your brain and while you slowly go insane they tell you “ given with the best intentions, help you with your complications!”
So far away makes me cry .
9:25 "Do you know that I mean" HELL YES! I know what you mean lol. I love so much that you're so detail oriented.
MUCH appreciated friend 🙏🤝
Please listen to "so far away", it is a tribute song to the Rev, their drummer, who sadly passed away and you can tell how emotional the whole band is throughout the song and video.
I remember years ago going to see Avenged and there was only like 100 people at the venues but they were amazing Everytime.
100 people???? thats crazy what year was it? cause i just went to their sold out show with 30.000 or so people in it
@@barbalatrosbro literally went to their first ever gig 😂
I got to see them in concert a few years ago and their songs live are insane! To hear and feel the music live is insane! Especially the drums!
I never knew this. That makes me love and respect Portnoy even more now. What a way to honor The Rev. RIP, Legend.
The best storytelling band in the world in both text and music!
You have good taste to recognise the genius of this band!
"How does the drummer do it that fast"
With his feet. Watch a drum cover, you'll love em
No waaay.
They are my safe place, I love this band since 2012
I hope you do more reactions of them. Thank You so much. ❤❤❤
It's good to see you enjoying what you're doing. Great vid.
RIP Rev!!!!!!!! One of the best drummers to ever play!!!!!!!! and that is not an understatement
My first Avenged Sevenfold song was "Batcountry" and it hooked me
Avenged sevenfold “save Me” is my favorite song, period. Please react, it’s a pseudo-tribute to their drummer, The Rev, who passed away
NEVER EXPECTED THIS! MY FAVORITE BAND!
Watching you reacting to this reminds me of the time when I was introduced to metal. This was the start of my journey 🤘🏻
Avenged have so many good songs, for me Coming Home is such a slept on song it has to have one of the best solos I’ve ever heard, literally 2mins of solid guitar in the middle!🤘🏼
Thank you for the video teddy I enjoy your continued dive into rock / mental
I won’t see you tonight part one and two are some of my favorites from Avenged.
I have been waiting for Teddy to make his way to Avenged. My favorite band since 2002. So many great songs to dive into.
Zacky Vengeance and Synester Gates are like the Ultimate duo of Guitars,
For the Drums to stop when he's banging on his Tom's or Snare his last hit with his sticks he just lands heavy and stays on the Tom or Snare thats how he's able to stop instantly.
The stage is a very under rated song of theirs that has a ton of depth musically and lyrically
I think Exist might be more underrated, I'd love to see them play it live but they probably won't, which is absolutely upsetting.
You should listen to So Far Away. You will feel plenty of emotions...as a fan of this band trust me
I def recommend checking more Avenged songs, most of them are lyrically really impresssive
Never stop doing reaction videos buddy. You've got the most honest and insightful reactions I've come across and I've seen thousands!!
I appreciate that, thank you!
@@TeddyGreyOS can you do a reaction on Mariage d'amour piano please?
So, the way they cut the drums is called a "noise gate".
Basically, any noise under a certain volume is muted.
Super common production trick for tight sounding drums and rhythm guitars in metal.
If you want an excellent example of how the drums of this song are played watch the cover done by El Estiparo Seberiano
You gotta do So Far Away brother. Youll love the emotion.
Definitely check out "Seize the Day" if you wanna hear the full range and brilliancy that M. Shadow's vocals is capable of.
Normal drummers: playing at 1/4 - 1/32 beat
Jimmy (the rev): 1/64 beats
Why "after StST"? It's got great songs on it too. The older albums are some of my favourite (not that the new ones aren't good)
Hey man, by that I meant that from my journey with the band, I had a harder time getting into StST compared to all the other albums because its production quality, and the abit rough around the edges in general, OFC its the 1st album, but I love love love it still dont misunderstand.
Accessibility and ease of listening kinda reasons, compared to the "mainstream tracks" that probably get you to initally even gain an interest, if youre very new to A7X.
wont wall you next msg, just dont wanna discourage you from responding to this in whatever way lol, just curious if u know what i meant by that-
cus I love StST, ofc, its just maybe the odd one out in terms of it sounding alot different than they end up sounding.
love to u my man, feel free to tell me one of ur takes in turn, always always just happy to talk to a7x fans, got none local heh
It's just so good.)@@Spot-t
man, cant really believe I had never heard of Pinkly Smooth, I will check that out and thanks for the chat man, can't really say that I disagree anything you told me there hehe. I have yet to choose a favorite either, I feel it changes with my mood/time what album I listen to most, lately it WtF actually, mostly cus of that angsty F it all vibe it has. Also I wont see you tonight yes, want to envoke any emotion in me, put that sh** on. :P @@102ndsmirnov7

The stage
The original Drummer Rev for Avenged Sevenfold was an absolute MASTER. Im so sad that his talent left this world so soon!
You should watch the Rev playing “Almost Easy” (also by Avenged Sevenfold) I think you’d enjoy it
So far away is a very very emotional song for all band members because it’s about the drummer jimmy the Rev they call him,as a drummer that has been playing for 7 years I can tell you he is one of the best drummers in the world.
the song so far away is about him passing away he was only 28 very sad but you want emotion you can have it with that song.
has anyone else got silent hill 2 vibes from some of the cinematography in the music video, have just recently replayed it and the crawling across the ceiling scene and body shaking reminded me a lot of that

This is my youngest son's absolute favorite band due to the drummer. I think he called him the Rev, yeah Jimmy "the Rev" Sullivan he RIP passed😢
My guy you have gotta give Avenged Sevenfold - “so far away” a go, It is such an emotional song that makes you tear up when you know the story of it!!
If you want some, literally, unholy drumming, I recommend city of evil, the album. The Rev was a beast
If you like the blasting double bass on the drums get on beast and the harlot by these
That is by far, the best UA-cam video intro I’ve ever seen 😂😂😂😂
I recommend The Stage. Mike Portnoy filled in after The Rev (original drummer) had passed away, but I love Brooks Wackerman and his work and he does it well on The Stage, and the lyricism is really good along with the music video they have.
With people like you, the rap/trap fans have a bridge into metal. I predict within the next ten years, metal is going to take a very popular turn so much so that it will actually become just as popular or if not more than rap.
