I heard A.R Rahman rode a train back and forth until he could mimic the sound of a train for the percussion. It's so seamless. He did the same thing for another film called Taal with the rain.
How in the Chaiya Chaiya phones does someone do that? Like what in the Padmavaats? Who in the Chaleya's does that? That's so seamless. I don't get how in the Bollywood someone can do this. SEAMLESS!
I hope I'm remembering correctly from his authorised biography, Adfimaker friends of his used to live in an apartment near a train track in Chennai. Rahman heard the train sounds often at their place for this.
Dil Se was a multi-language release, but primary language it was shot in is Hindi. Directed by the master himself Mani Ratnam. No green screen, no camera wizardries....Mani sir actually shot the song on top of a moving train...One of the most iconic songs in SRK's illustrious career
This song not just a song, it is a legit poem. Sure the choreography and cinematography is totally of the top level. But you have to know Urdu or Hindi to really appreciate the true beauty of this song to the full extent. Also Gulzar, the lyrcist, is a great legend in India.
Yes, its not green screen at all. Its all real and its on moving train. Shahrukh Khan is a legendary actor and Malaika also worked hard for this. Once Malaika shared her experience about shooting this song, she was nervous because its dangerous but they both just killed it. Its a classic and we have danced on this song a lot in childhood..

In an interview with Anupam Kher, he told that he is never the most talented on sets, there are always better actors than me out there accompanying me but I try my best to get the people on sets get convinced that there is no one more hardworking than me. And a fact, after Red Chillies Entertainment got it's foot in the industry, two of the old films of Srk that they bought the rights were Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Dil Se.... Srk literally as an actor gave it all. These are very close to his heart. Srk, you beauty ❤
Fun Fact: this song is the introductory song for the Hollywood movie - Inside Man starring Clive Owen and Jodie Foster. And one other movie if I’m not mistaken. No green screen involved.
That was spot on, the movie is about chasing after love, even if it is forbidden, dangerous and that's what the song is about. The direction and story is by the great Mani Ratnam, the music by AR, the lyrics by Gulzar and the cinematography by the amazing Santhosh Shivan. And yes it was filmed on a actual train.
Shah Rukh said, "The dancers were all tied down that's why it was very difficult. The train was slow, but many times, those overhead bridges use to come and there was no communication like how you have those speakers now. I remember Farah Khan and the rest of the crew carried a white cloth. Every time they put it up it meant stop the song and just bend down. It was very scary. Because even when you lie down it was like you could literally feel the bridge pass over you. That song was shot guerrilla style. The train would stop and suddenly start. It was very difficult to shoot the song. It was fun but not without its difficulties." Quite a dare-devil!
This song is a cult classic and one of A.R.Rahman's finest compositions. A version of this song also features as the title music and in end credits in the Hollywood movie Inside Man. Santhosh Sivan, one of the finest cinematographers in India filmed this on Nilgiri Mountain railway in South India. He won the national award as well as the Filmfare awards in 1999 for this film. ARR's music as you can hear is outstanding due to the percussion, bass and flute orchestration being in line with the sounds of a moving train; simply awesome! They had to plan a lot and shoot the sequences in real time as the train was moving, so great work by the whole team.
I am amazed how wonderfully right your interpretation is. Just shows that Latin and Urdu souls speak to one another in the same wavelength. What a joy it was to hear the two of you speak about the song. Watch the film. It's one of the best films ever made anywhere. Love you both and your family.
the movie was not so popular but this song just stood out. People used to come during the time of song at the screening enjoy the song dance and leave. For this reason theater owners used to play this song again at the end of the movie for people to enjoy cause it has a sad ending. the actress was tied with the rope in some parts but srk was not as he had jump and move a lot throughout the song. it was shot in five days. Everything in this song is real and legit
This song was filmed on the way of Ooty (short for Udhagamandalam), a hill station(town) of Tamil Nadu, India. One of the most beautiful tourist spots in India I've ever visited. As Indian Railways is very close to my heart n life (mostly for all Indians, don't be surprised), I can say that this song was filmed at Nilgiri Mountain Railway. That train is a toy train, nowadays it is called Nilgiri Express. Starts from Chennai(Mettupalayam) n ends in Ooty. The joyride n the side scenes are as spectacular as the town Ooty. Once in a lifetime experience. 😍😘😘 The feel of this song n the actual journey on this train in real life are basically the same.
The actor in this song, Shah Rukh Khan, is one of the most famous actors in India. This song is in urdu and is from the Bollywood industry. There are many ways to express "beloved" in urdu because it is a very poetic language
Chaiyya Chaiyya, in my opinion, is one of the greatest songs ever produced, where the lyrics are pure poetry, the composition is nothing short of absolute genius, and the vocals are as perfect as they can be 👌
What about Satrangi Re from the same movie ? I don't think any song like that will ever come in entire music history. The lethal combo or AR , Sonu Nigam , Gulzar has given the soul of heaven in that song ❤
Chaiyya Chaiyya is also featured in the opening and end credits for the English movie Inside Man (2006). Also on a side note, people in India didn't travel like that on top of trains, it is a punishable offence. The screenplay of the song is purely for the sake of fantasy sequence in the movie.
The lyrics are by "Gulzar" sahab, he is well known film maker, novelist and poet... What I remember "Farah Khan" the Choreographer of the song shared her experience, the way the shot the song in 1 day (As they got permission from government for single day)... If you search it, you will get the vedio...
Only 90's Indian kids know what this song did to us at that time. Like humming around this song whole day and just being happy to doing that's chaiyya chhaiyyan staps at home and get scolded after that.😂🤣
This song went down as a masterpiece, filmed without much safety equipment (yeah I know, terrifying) too. It was all shot on the moving train, but they kept the speed of the train at a very specific pace to ensure everything will be kay.
Shahrukh Khan (SRK), he's known as 'The King of Bollywood' and 'The King of Romance' , I am not exaggerating, he's known allover the world even in the film industry by these names. He's the world's second richest actor with a networth of 870 million dollars and he's also the world's biggest movie star (as said by Forbes, CNN, Sky News, BBC, LA Times, Newsweek, etc) with a fanbase around 3.8 billion people. Hugh Jackman called him 'The God Of Acting' . He is so witty as well (Wittiest in the whole industry), I want you to check his interviews like with David letterman Brad Pitt Google most searched questions. Please react on his movies like Don Don 2 Devdas Swades Dil se Ra.One Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna Kal ho na ho Jab tak hai jaan Rab ne Bana Di Jodi, etc
😂😂😂😂😂it's all real people..real locations, real train and real actors ...in Hindi and Urdu not Tamil but it sounds beautiful in Tamil too.. 🙏🏻🙆🏻♀️ Edit: by the way...this song was featured in the Hollywood movie Inside Man.
The way you both interpreted the lyrics is spot on in regards to the story line of the whole movie. Chasing a love that’s dangerous and at the end finding tranquility in it. You guys described the entire movie in your interpretation. Brilliant minds, you both!
if you can observe, The song is a replica of a train. How a train starts, how it slowly pick up speed, how it blasts with full speed , how it honks, everything is conveyed through the rhythm and music of the song. Kudos A.R.Rahman. he is from other planet.
The song was actually captured on a real moving train!!! And the song, the filming, A R Rahman's creation, the choreography and Shah Rukh Khan... Everything together make this an iconic song!
@@Exiide89 I don't think it's copy but the lyrics is inspired by the iconic kalam kar thaiya thaiya, tere ishq wich nachaya kar thaiya thaiya." Gulzar ( sampurna singh kalra) being Punjabi himself obviously knew this and took inspiration from it. Yes not a lot of people no about it and the makers should have given credit but that was just a different time and makers didn't care to mention this thing. Musical composition of both is definitely different
Gulzar is THE Lyricist of India , beyond the level of Rahman in composition terms. Also you guys did a great job in interpretation of what the lyrics might have meant. 👏🏻 kodos.
Gulzar is not the original lyricist for the this song. This is a Punjabi original song called "Kar thaiya thaiya" which was copied by AR Rehman at the behest of Sukhwinder.
The actor in the movie here is perhaps one of the greatest the world has ever seen, Shah Rukh Khan. And this act had been choreographed by a legendary choreographer in Farah Khan.
He's a great actor no doubt. But, one of the greatest of all time, it's just an Indian opinion. Even INDIA has had or has so many greater then him in terms of acting.
I am absolutely blown away by how accurately you guys understood the meaning the lyrics of this song allude to at 20:27!! If you watch the movie, "Dil Se" this song refers to how the main character who is Amar, a journalist (played by Sharukh Khan aka the man in the red jacket) falls unwittingly and hopelessly in love with a mysterious woman on his journey named Meghna (she is not in this video but her character is played by Manisha Koirala), she reciprocates his love but rejects him as unbeknownst to him she is part of a nefarious terrorist group. The movie is certainly a masterpiece and a must watch!
YES! This is the stuff you should explore more!! Also Chai in most Indian languages means tea. So when saying Chai Tea you are actually saying Tea Tea, I never understood why British ppl do this. Just call it Chai. ☺️
Chai is milk tea like it is made in India. Tea is made differently in different places. "Tea " is made without milk or even sugar (what you call black tea).. So when they call it Chai Tea, it means tea made the way Indians do. That is how it has been described and has been included in dictionaries now. So they are not calling it "tea tea" and Chai Tea is correct. We Indians tend to take literal translations of things and that is why we tend to make such small ignorant mistakes. I hope now you understand why it is called "Chai Tea". It is a type of preparation. Same as in China where the just call tea "Cha Shui" or literally translated to Tea. But here we call it Chinese tea. So the Chinese might ask us the same thing, like why we are calling it "Chinese Tea" instead of just Tea.
@@ahas1972 Omg so much mental gymnastics to justify the naming! It's just plain weird come on Pizza is also a type of bread but you don't call it Pizza bread, like Cappuccino is a coffee preparation but not called Cappuccino coffee. Call it Indian Tea or Chinese Tea whatever but Chai Tea is just strange, they also have something called Chai Tea Latte lol.
@@sunchi1461 Chai = Tea, it's the literal translation of this word. The thing is that they call it Chai Tea. Anyways it is not a big deal, just sounds strange to native hindi speakers.
This is one of the most Iconic songs of South Asia. It just doesnt get old. I heard this in the 90s when I was a kid. Still get goosebumps. You guys getting too hung up on the train. We just get it done, forget safety especially back then 😂
SRK is legend guy... And all of this was filmed on moving train. Actors didn't even take any body double or kind of any alternative they themselves this every dance moves, jumps themselves. It's filmed is North India. And it's is a Urdu song as lyrics are all urdu words(can be called Hindi as well)
1. I love how perfectly both of you pronounce Dil Se. 2. It's not a greensceen it's real 3. It's Hindi not Tamil, it's Bollywood (hindi). You guys have to get familiar with the actor Shah Rukh Khan (in short SRK). A legend. 4. It's shot in one day. The budgets back then were relatively small, traveling to such places and hiring a train was a big spending. They always tried to minimize the time, hence costs. You always hear stories how they shot entire songs in a day back then (on the set for 15-20 hours often)
The song is more Urdu. Words like Gulposh, Naghma, Kalma, Jannat, Khushboo, Mehke Taweez & Ayat is Urdu and not Hindi but both speakers are able to understand as Urdu has always been used in Bollywood.
@@lanabelair4775 yeah sorry with that logic we can say that 90% of the Bollywood songs are in Urdu. The movie itself however is considered a Hindi movie.
15:58 "Haven would be under their feet's" for " paon janate chalein" is a wrong translation. It is " just go with creating (or more pure word "born") your own feet's"
It's a bollywood movie and the song is in Hindi (pre-dominantly spoken in the Northern & Central India), directed by South India great. The location is too in Southern India.
Every toy mobile and all other toys with sounds had a part of this song back then when we were little... for years this was the "it" song and often made into daily conversations... It is so popular even today... No one can just sit on their seats when this song is playing. This is way more significant considering Indians "trains", atleast for some journeys because of the scenes that go by. So every time we are enjoying a train ride, this song is there...whether in our heads or we are just singing it.... Even the sound of train merges with this song since we have heard it so many times..
Guys this is not greenscreen as it was actually shot on a moving train keeping in mind all the precautions and safety measures necessary. Shah Rukh Khan the actor in this video has done a great job right there. He's one of the best we've got and yes this is not from South it's from Bollywood movie name is 'Dil Se'.
The song is sung in Urdu. Hindi and Urdu are similar in everyday conversation but have many differences. Urdu is a very flowery, poetic language. Urdu is derived from Arabic and Farsi (from Iran) and is typically the language for Muslims in India and Pakistan. It’s evident this song is Urdu from some of the terms like “aayat” meaning Islamic verse and “qalma” meaning declaration of Islamic faith
The song stems from Sufi music which comes from a cultural branch of Islam called Sufism. These songs are Urdu. Singers like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (O Re Piya) and Atif Aslam often sing Sufi songs in a style called qawwali. A good example of a qawwali song you should check out is Bol Kaffara Kya Hoga by Sehar Gul Khan (the original version on the Bol channel).
Wow I'm loving how your are breaking down all aspects of the song. The melody, the harmony, the rhythm, the lyrics and the video. This is a really profound reaction, worthy of such a legendary song. And interestingly you both seem to understand even the little nuances of the emotion, proves that love and music truly crosses boundaries. Thanks a lot!!
Before 2000, there was no green screen atleast in bollywood. Every action done by manually. If u get a chance to watch Sholay, the chasing scene is epic, w/o much safety equipment they performed all actions. And it a bollywood movie means hindi movie not from south.
that's shah rukh khan by the way! he's called the king of bollywood. i wish you'd explore more of him and find reasons to stan him as the king like any of us. maybe you should check out " *aankhein khuli ho ya ho band* from mohabbtein"
Thanks for noting the rythmic beats because the music director of this movie and its songs was the very celebrated and venerated A R Rahman, he is probably the single most influential music director of the late 90s early 00s Bollywood Cinema since he mixed in western music with classic beats and produced truly unique music that resonated with his audience. His compositions and directing is virtually flawless.
You need to react to the song this movie was named after, "Dil Se re" and especially "Satrangi re"... The music and lyrics both define that and subsequent era of Bollywood.
In Hindi there are so many ways to express beloved And love ...So many words for beloved and love....for example piya, sanam, mahi, jaanam, all have same meaning (beloved)....
Simplicity is an antonym for intricacy..... but you have very well described AR's work as "intricacies in simplicity".... "Taal Se Tall mila" is one such song. General people like me needs sometime ...some days ...to understand the intricacies in his music.
Guys all the scene they shoot without green mat.that’s huge intelligent director MANIRATNAM and best real music maestro AR RAHMAN make the sound exactly train sound effects.that’s a pretty and such an master plan to took this kind of seance……hats of all the team…
Gulzar who wrote the lyrics is a modern legend and very well respected in the industry. I would encourage you to explore Vishal Bharadwaj's music composition as well he collaborates with Gulzar often. Also a fun fact both A. R. and Gulzar won the Oscar for best original song 'Jai Ho' from Slumdog Millionaire. Gulzar also has a Grammy if I am not mistaken. Edit: typo
It's a vibe song for all the 90's kids. Was released in multiple languages. In hindi it was chaiyya chaiyya, in tamil it was thaiyya thaiyya. The location is India's 1st hill train running between mettupalayam and ooty (ottacamund). There was no green screen, the long shots are done using crane camera's. Directed by mani rathnam who's is famous in making love and social issues kind of movies! It's been years but still the song has a seperate fan base all across India
Well let me tell u it's all real no green screen..what amaze more is that the leads said no to any sort of safety while filming..it's an actual route to Ooty (a place in india).all this is actually shot on a moving train
It's impressive how you picked up the train sound percussion beats which I have seen many a people miss , Rahman and Sivamani have created a masterpiece .
The actor in the video is SRK (SHAH RUKH KHAN), he is world's 2nd richest actor. This song was also used as an intro and ending song in the 2006 HOLLYWOOD FILM "INSIDE MAN". Also some of the other famous Hollywood films used A.R.RAHMAN's songs/music as part of their films. And also this song is not in SOUTH INDIA LANGUAGE (TAMIL, TELUGU ,etc.), its in HINDI.
Dude the entire shot was on a moving train. This movie and this song is a landmark in the film industry. The film through was a multi language release. The song though was in Hindi.

20:40 you we're actually almost on point there. We'll he does meet a girl who's quite dangerous in a way( no spoilers ) .The girl in question here is also the female lead but the girl on the train is not that girl and only present for the duration of the song.
I think' Mohe Rang do Lal' would be a great pick for your next reaction. It's a bit classical from movie Bajirao Mastani . This is one album of ARR you should check out probably entirely, title track, 'Satrangi re' (quite a complex piece) and the ever lasting 'E Ajnabi' are still some of the most memorable songs even after 24 years ...As other comments said, this was on a real moving train. This train journey itself from Conoor to Ooty is one of the amazing train journies in India I have experienced (it's called Nilgiri Mountain railways and part of UNESCO heritage now). There are many articles where Sharukh and Malaika talks about the shooting of this video... essentially, it was a very slow moving train, most of the dancers were tied to the train and I think it took 4 and half days to film...there were few injuries too during the shoot ..so it was quite an adventure.
finally, they reacted to king khan!!! he's the celebrities of celebrities, tom Hiddleston, zayn malik, daniel Radcliffe are a few examples. he's a household name in other countries with a huge fanbase such as Russia and Germany, southeast Asia, etc. king khan is the nickname of Shahrukh khan the actor in this movie, he's known as the king of Bollywood, no one beats him in classics, he's the og and hopefully u react to the legendary pairing of srk(sharukh khan) and kajol(actress he's constantly paired up with, shes the blind girl in chand sifaarish u guys reacted to), their movie ddlj has been playing in the indian cinemas for thirty yrs (kpop idols including exo went to watch it in India) and many other movies of this pairing such k3g, kkhh are family classics that everyone watches regularly, I hope u react to their songs such as bole chudiyan and ye ladki hai allah
Hey guys.. You liked Ajay-Atul's Sairat Zala Ji song.. due to its orchestral feel. .. Then you will love another song from the duo, from same movie.. "Yad Lagla .. "
In 90 concept of hiding camera wasn’t there . We are talking about 25 yr back & they don’t have Hollywood budget . This was filmed on what we call toy’s train in mountain. They run at 25-28km per hour only . They had special flat carrier where group was dancing .
The full song is shooted on a moving train from Mettupalayam to Ooty route( Tamilnadu , southern railway) in 1998 but an another film 'Murattu - kaalai' ( starred by Rajinikant) there was a fight scene in moving train at the time of 1983..
So main character fell for one certain girl and she is kinda dangerous woman...but girl in this song is not main character, she is just part of that random village group, these people who sing and dance during long jurney so they dont get bored
This whole song is done on train because in which station they want to shoot this song indian railway didn’t allowed for that so the choreographer of this song decided to perform on a train and it takes 5 days to shoot this song.

Efra hit the nail on the head with this lyric interpretation. Good job!!! It's one very different and beautiful movie. Such storylines are not usually encountered in movies. The movie felt like it was about a lot of things but in the end it was all about love.
Gulzar is a legendary lyricist in the Hindi film industry. In the notes of one of his song collections, he writes that AR Rahman freed him from having to follow the standard formula of a repetitive chorus and verse. He could write free-form poetry. Songs they have done together are some of my favourites. Efra kind of guessed the theme of the movie. Dil se = from the heart. Waleska got the meaning of Shade spot-on. In India, Shade is valued. It is cooling, comforting and relief-giving. So, it is often used as a metaphor for love (even parental love). This was actually shot on a train (which was going at its slowest speed). You will notice that the dancing is largely grounded or even stationary. Yet, a couple of the back-up dancers are said to have fallen off the train while filming. The choreographer is Farah Khan and I think this is her best work. The film is in Hindi (even though the film's director Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman are originally from the Tamil Industry). There is a Tamil dubbed (I think) version of this film as well, but this is from the Hindi version. It was shot in the South, however. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
These are practical shots! Also you guys would love - Aalaporan Thamizhan - by A.R.Rahman. Beautiful song visually and also in terms of the score itself…
Fun fact: AR Rahman took credit for the composition, but it's actually a copy of the original "Kar thaiya thaiya" sung by Sukhwinder for some punjabi album composed by some little known punjabi composer. The original song is based on Sufi composer Bulleshah's Kalaam.
This movie, Dil Se, has one of the best soundtracks in Indian Cinema and is also very highly regarded in terms of an artistic piece. You should check out all the songs.
A special song for me... my whole childhood I was singing this song since I had a doll with this song ... till date love for this song hasn't changed any...
Search for this article - It's Been 17 Years Of SRK's 'Chaiya Chaiya', And Farah Khan's Made Some Major Revelations About The Song. The song was shot on the moving train indeed but the speed was kept slow and constant to keep everyone stable, and the areal shots were taken using cranes. The choreographer is farah Khan and she has given the details about how this song was shot in many interviews. And this song is in Hindi, though this movie was dubbed in Tamil as well. The song is shot in the southern state of Tamil Nadu though.
In this song he is not referring to the girl dancing but to some other girl he met for short time, and fell in love at first sight. he is on a journey looking for the girl.
The movie was originally released in Hindi! te songs were Awesome thanks to AR Rahman and the singers, and Sharukh Khan's performance was applaudable! And YES ,it was filmed on a moving train but a very slow moving one but everyone risked their lives for shooting this including the leads, you can see them sitting when the train moves on a bridge!
This was one that I was hoping you would listen to, especially the movie version. I find that a lot of live versions of Indian movie songs aren’t great but the recorded versions are cool. Also people used to travel on top of trains and buses in India, free ride lol. Also finally someone is recognizing Urdu “poetry” or lyricism is ridiculously beautiful.

Guys this is real🤣🤣 not greenscreen. Papa is wrong here. Shah Rukh Khan did all this, No greenscreen👏

The entire 'Dil Se' album is a masterpiece.
Also the best album of AR Rahman imho is 'Thiruda Thiruda'

there was no green screen ! whole song was choreographed on moving train . and the actor in the song is a world's No. 1 Actor SHAH RUKH KHAN (SRK)
the movie was not so popular but this song just stood out.
The feel of this song n the actual journey on this train in real life are basically the same.

@@everythingforfun7104 YES! That's the most amazing song produced IMHO! Song, lyrics, video, acting, etc... Ugh, I just LOVE IT SO MUCH!
"You can't jump on a train like that" you guys don't understand the absolute chaos of india
The way you both interpreted the lyrics is spot on in regards to the story line of the whole movie. Chasing a love that’s dangerous and at the end finding tranquility in it.
You guys described the entire movie in your interpretation. Brilliant minds, you both!
Exactly. Never seen someone so bang on with the interpretation. It's actually a spoiler
It's a 1998 movie if someone hasn't watched it by now they deserve to have the movie spoiled (for Indians of course)
if you can observe,
The song is a replica of a train.
It's not AR Rehman's creation. He just copied it. Original is a Punjabi song called "Kar thaiya thaiya".

SRK is legend guy... And all of this was filmed on moving train. Actors didn't even take any body double or kind of any alternative they themselves this every dance moves, jumps themselves. It's filmed is North India. And it's is a Urdu song as lyrics are all urdu words(can be called Hindi as well)
you guys literally pronounce all the words so perfectly like latinos are really perfect at pronouncing our Indian words
1. I love how perfectly both of you pronounce Dil Se.
2. It's not a greensceen it's real

Do listen to the Title track 'Dil Se' of this movie. An absolute masterpiece.
Wow I'm loving how your are breaking down all aspects of the song. The melody, the harmony, the rhythm, the lyrics and the video.
