That scene with Faith at the end is one of my favourite in the show's entire run. It encapsulates Angel's mission and shows what an impact he can have on people. I love that he clearly visits her often and they've built this tentative friendship.
The answer is: its both. She was under the influence of the demon, and didn't resist at a critical moment. They ALL had the ability to walk away, but fell under the sway of the demon. Angel was in no mood to get heroic after being sacrificed by a panicked mob...so he let the demon have its win and walked away, only to come back decades later and find Judy still 'trapped in amber', kept alive by a demon that feasts on her quiet desperation, guilt and fear. Whatever she did wrong...surely it wasn't worth 50 years as emotional demon chow, so the 'new Angel' forgave her and comforted her before she passed away. Paired with Faith's convo with Angel and his willingness to sing publicly to get answers that could save someone...we're seeing a lot of S2 showing Angel opening up, being vulnerable and connecting more...which makes a great start to S2. Plus...Andy Hallet now occasionally joins cast!!! (RIP Andy...you legend of song and stage!!)
It's not just that Angel was in no mood to get heroic. This was 50 years ago, he was no hero at that time. He didn't save Judy in the first place to be a hero, he just didn't want the PI coming in.
@@micahnieman673 so true, and doubly tragic...because he was just BARELY starting to stick his neck out for other people and look for a way to beat the demon...and got betrayed to an angry mob. He was...very tentatively...trying to do the right thing...and got slapped down so hard it was 40 plus years before he tried again.
What I like about the 2nd episode, It shows that Angel actually did try to be a hero but was failed by humanity(basically). It isn't until he meets Buffy that he learns what it's to truly be a hero😮
Why wouldn't she be under the spell? _Everyone in the hotel_ except Angel and the bellhop was being influenced - remember when everyone except the bellhop was horrified that they'd lynched a guy and didn't seem to remember why they did it?
It's not a spell as such for any of them. The demon is just whispering their insecurities to each of them and feeding off their fears and paranoia. At the point of Angel's "death", everyone has been whipped up to a frenzy over a murderer in the hotel.
There’s so much to love about “Are You Now or Have You Ever Been,” but one of my favorites is how perfect the Hyperion Hotel is for Angel’s headquarters: a demon infested, abandoned place full of murder and guilt that will be used for good to help lost souls. The exchange between Wesley and Angel invites the comparison without any clunky dialogue to make it more obvious too.
Are You Now or Have You Ever Been many fans rate as one of the best episodes of the series. It's is very similar in tone to the BTVS episode I Only Have Eyes For You. I think it is definitely one of the top ten episodes in the whole Buffyverse. A superb plot, this could have been a whole movie on its own. Judy's story is heart breaking, superb from Tim Minear who was involved in many of the best Angel episodes, he also wrote for the X-Files as well. We see of course the group now move into the hotel, which becomes a great base for operations. 'We're Moving In'
The demon didn't control anyone but he did influence everyone, the longer they were there the more he could influence them. The demon was also pushing people towards specific ends so how much or how little he was pushing people depended on what he could get out of it.
This episode (s2e2) is sooo fucking good. We're starting to see that Angel wasn't always a 'good' person even after he got a soul. Judy's tale is very tragic with her not only basically being imprisoned the rest of her life, but also tortured for the rest of her life by a paranoia demon. The editing of season 2 is much, much better with better transitions rather than the random jump cuts of season 1. The writing is more confident and understands their characters better, especially Angel. Gunn being added to the full cast is also a welcome as the tight 3 person main cast didn't always give enough room to have more interesting conversations, as well as offering a character that while at the same time doesn't need to be introduced to vampires and supernatural stuff allows for a different type of fish out of water character when it comes to demons, and the other more grey sides of the supernatural.
A great opener to S2 the show in Judgment. 'The Host' ( as he is known at this point ) making Angel sing a terrible rendition of Mandy by Barry Manilow just painfully funny. The look on the Demons faces is hilarious listening to it. A touching scene at the end with Angel visiting Faith in prison. Great to see Gunn on the team too a super addition to the team.
"Ruckus would have caught her" 🤣 But I didn't understand where y'all got turned around. The "moral of the story" is about the relationship between paranoia and herd mentality. The demon took advantage, prolonged it, etc. but the frightening thing was that it was still humans that caused physical harm. The demon wasn't really controlling their minds, it wasn't forcing them to do things, it was only pushing their buttons.
But by doing that he was changing who they were as well. It was more like all the answers at once. No he wasn't controlling them, while yes he was controlling, changing, manipulating, feeding off them, and making them submissive to further manipulation, all along. It's how literally the law sees it with date rape drugs, this being many times worse should, would be seen the same or similar. Then you have to consider why he could feed off her a lifetime. Because unlike the comfortable white visitors, these were her fears probably most of her lifetime, since a child learning, or taught/ experienced to be afraid of it.
Chris out here valiantly trying to keep his eyes open (I'm guessing this is a "new baby = no sleep" issue), and still managing to engage lucidly with the content. Nice. (Unless the editor was just being kind, and the uncut is a flustercluck, of course.)
Decided to make another comment because this upload is an iconic one for the show: The introduction of Lorne’s character, Gunn’s official addition to the group, AND the Hyperion Hotel, which is the best and my favorite headquarters for Angel Investigations! There’s a lot of good things coming your way in this particular season, so brace yourselves ❤️🫶🏻
Love the combination of the cast and your commentary for this series. Very entertaining and funny. Really glad you are loving the series! Rana, love your passion in reactions.
Season 2 is where the show really starts to find its voice, and it’s one of my favorite seasons along with Season 5. When Faith said, “The road to redemption is a rocky path,” it honestly made me so happy to see a character I’ve hated become so likable. (That line is like the motto of the show too!) I know I’m in the minority here, but I just never really got the appeal of her character, especially on Buffy. That’s why I’ve always wished for her to become part of Angel Investigations instead. She clearly fit in better with them than with the Scoobies and could’ve been a great asset. Her character development mirrors that of Cordelia, Angel, and Wesley, all of whom are characters who originated from Buffy. This could be another reason why she works better with them on Angel. It’s like the characters who have gone through the most growth end up working together, building a team that thrives on redemption and transformation. I really wished for that to happen because it would have been so satisfying to see all the characters with the most compelling arcs joining forces. In the few episodes you’ll upload later from Season 4, the way she interacted with the group-especially Gunn, when the two of them made fun of Connor-is one of my favorite little moments between unexpected Buffyverse characters. I can totally see them becoming best friends since Faith is like the female version of Gunn in a sense! :)
2 funny points-- The group reaction to the first time we see Lorne, and thinking someone arrested for murder is locked up for life! This is a group that has never watched any Law & Order shows, hahaha!! Finally, did Judy deserve her fate? No! She did bad things, but the whole show is about redemption.
Yeah, I think Angel was always meant to kill the demon protector. Even if his motives were entirely pure in protecting the woman, there's no way he could have won the tribunal.
Angel Season 2, here we are, and this one is a hard one to watch folks. Not because it's a bad season, it's actually awesome, and the show feels like it's starting to hit its stride. But Angel himself will be put through the ringer, and that's going to be hard to watch. Hell, all these years later, and it's still a rough one to see. But we get introduced to the phenomenon that is Lorne
2x01 The Angel fucks up to the point of being called out episode. The Angel sings _Mandy_ episode, however I will probably always see it the episode with one of my favorite Faith moments. Chris thinks it looks daytime outside. 🤨 Why would they wait for cops about a demon situation, Rana? The cops were never even called once it was revealed Angel couldn't be seen in mirrors. I'm confused about her whole spiel there. It's like she hadn't been watching The Buffyverse for five seasons. Four of Buffy and one of Angel. Plus, we only saw Wesley as cool because that's how he was seeing himself. That's why he fumbled the darts game before meeting them for the 911 call. The group acting the way they did in the gym was professional, to them, that's what made it cool. It's a way of showing months have past since we last saw them/since the end of the last season, both from audience standpoint, and in-iniverse and telling the audience they've gotten better at what they're doing? 2x02 My favorite episode of the series and third favorite overall of the Buffyverse. Angel drinks human blood from a bottle while having a soul in 1952. I theorize he drinks human blood from the moment he turns into a vampire until BtVS 2x07 _Lie to Me_ when Buffy gives him a look and asks him if he can deliver the hospitals blood bags (which vampires attempted to steal) safely back to the hospital. This, I believe, because in BtVS 1x07 _Angel,_ he had bagged human blood in the refrigerator when Darla opened it, and by BtVS 3x19 _The Prom,_ he was buying pig's blood from a butcher. I think Buffy, whether intentional or not, guilted him into changing his dietary habits with that look she gave him in BtVS 2x07 _Lie to Me._ Angel in the flashbacks of 1952 is a very anti-social, not-caring frame of mind, person/vampire (Angel doesn't care about the suicide and goes back to drinking his human blood). Judy changes Angel's attitude, then betrays him to the mob of hotel guests and workers. Thus Angel's anti-social, not-caring attitude allows for the demon to win. But could Angel have won even if he played hero? He either gives everyone to the demon (as what did happen anyway), or he says he's alive after they "hung" him and that creates paranoia to feed the demon. The demon wins either way. I would say the demon created the paranoia, and that can be huge with causing people problems even when a demon isn't involved by forcing paranoia on everyone. Judy was a great single episode character. She felt bad, but paranoia the demon gave her drove her actions. Once said paranoia was gone she apologized and Angel forgave. That earning forgiveness and getting it exchange is heart of the main theme to the show.
We know from Buffy that he stopped feeding on human blood before then. In 1996 for "Becoming part 1", he's homeless and feeding off rats. We also know from a future Angel episode this season that he spends a time after becoming resouled, feeding off rats "you smell like vermin".
@@scottwallbank4794 SPOILERS That only shows that out of guilt of drinking from a gunshot victim he fed off rats until Whistler came along. It doesn't state he was done with human blood once he started following Buffy around to _Lie to Me._
@@scottwallbank4794 SPOILERS That shows Angel fed off rats out of guilt after feeding off a gunshot victim. From that gunshot victim until seeing Buffy for the first time he is guilt-ridden over that moment. It doesn't mean that from seeing Buffy until _Lie to Me,_ (and before the gunshot victim) he wasn't drinking bottled human blood and hosptal bagged blood. After all, everyone knows about delivery day. Darla shows the audience the bags in Angel's refrigerator, and Angel tells Buffy without telling her he drinks human hospital bagged blood by saying everyone knows about delivery day. But Buffy, as far as I'm concerned, puts the pieces together and gives Angel a look after asking him to get the blood back where it belongs. A year later in _The Prom_ we see him buying pigs blood from a butcher. As far as I'm concerned the rat eating is guilt of a human that Angel could have saved. He, at the point of meeting Whistler doesn't have a problem going back to bagged human blood, until Buffy calls him out on it in _Lie to Me._ His guilt was about an actual human, not about drinking human blood. This makes more sense than saying the writers messed up in the Buffy titled episode _Angel._ This makes all the moments fit together, in my opinion.
@@Buffy8Fan SPOILERS That response does nothing to address my point of how Darla states in the episode "Darla" that he "reeks of vermin", which is clearly a reference to him feeding off rats alone at that time. We know from the same episode that his statement of "I haven't fed off a living human being since that day" in "Angel" wasn't true anyway (or accurate whilst leaving out details of murdering them first). No date is given for the diner scene you reference in "Orpheus", but the fashion on the woman in the diner particularly sets it as closer to 70s than the 90s of the Whistler scene. Angelus makes comment during the episode of how he "smelt of nothing but rat". We don't know how long it lasted, but there's clearly at least periods stated where he's feeding solely off rats, which are both points when he's at his lowest. I agree I think he likely spent most of the time acquiring blood sources of different forms, but when he's lowest, vermin was all he fed off.
@@scottwallbank4794 I thought you were referencing a line from Buffy's _Angel_ episode. My bad. We don't know enough of his story to know why or when he would always go back and forth (he is 240+ after all), but I would head canon in _Darla_ bottled and bagged blood didn't yet exist and/or were too hard to get ahold of regularly, so vermin had to do.
Are you now or Have You Ever Been is a great episode. BUT..... I always have to point out the money from the robbery. It's supposed to be the 1950's yet they are using 100 dollar bills from current (2000's) time. Bugs me every single time a detail like that could be so obviously missed. But great start to S2, these first 10 episodes are some of my favorite in the entire series
Why is the audio echoing so much? Also a huge Futurama fan, but the best interpretation of God is Miracle Workers! 😂 With Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi, so hilarious!! 🤣🖖🏻
The demon created heightened paranoia, but ultimately, the choice was Judy's. You can go back and forth whether someone should have still been able to do the right thing, but there's a point where everyone will break - human weakness. I like the ambiguity in that - it's both Judy's fault and I think, forgivable.
Except once affected, she's a different person. This is why the rules for drinking , and drugs. By affecting them, especially without their notice, he controlled them to do what they eventually did. He just might not have always been specific with the outcomes, as every individual, has different variables that would make them respond differently in many , most, or all situations. But, her feeding for a lifetime as a goal, I'd guess he was real specific and was constantly affecting her since he started. Even Angel might've been affected, more than we realized, this shown by somewhat giving up on humanity at a time when he was weaker, in multiple ways.
I miss this show so much. Some of the best cliff hangers and WTF moments. Can’t wait to see your reactions of the things to come. If you know you know.
Interestingly enough, while deaths did happen, they weren't *super* common. Geoffrey, son of King Henry II, is theorized to have died during one, but not directly from it. He was trampled by a horse. King Henry VIII had an accident during a joust, but again, not from being struck with a lance, but by his horse rolling over him when the horse stumbled and fell. He supposedly had another accident, but that was because his dumb ass forgot to put his helmet's visor down, and when his opponent's lance shattered on him, he got hit in the face with a crapton of splinters.
I loved that whole debate about whether or not Judy deserved it. I don't think she did. Without the spell affecting everyone, Judy wouldn't have been in a position where she had to accuse Angel of anything.
Honestly I’ve noticed more and more they have the weird US racial mindset where characters who don’t look like them get zero empathy and usually some pretty problematic race “joking” but when it’s someone from their group they’ll bend over backwards to excuse their actions.
Here's a thing I might have others different opinions on,u can accept this idea for the next videos Watch Skibidi Toilet By Dafuqboom Episode 1 to Episode 77 Anyone who agrees or disagrees, reply to this comment

It's David Boreanaz's favorite episode of the show.
"He's lip-syncing."

It's true

That response does nothing to address my point of how Darla states in the episode "Darla" that he "reeks of vermin", which is clearly a reference to him feeding off rats alone at that time.
I think alot of people would be green his shade in particular.
I think he played the fake dean in community
Are you now or Have You Ever Been is a great episode. BUT.....
I always have to point out the money from the robbery. It's supposed to be the 1950's yet they are using 100 dollar bills from current (2000's) time. Bugs me every single time a detail like that could be so obviously missed. But great start to S2, these first 10 episodes are some of my favorite in the entire series
Why is the audio echoing so much? Also a huge Futurama fan, but the best interpretation of God is Miracle Workers! 😂 With Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi, so hilarious!! 🤣🖖🏻

1:16 AN ANGEL A BEAUTIFUL SWEET BABY BOY OF AN ANGEL
Even Angel might've been affected, more than we realized, this shown by somewhat giving up on humanity at a time when he was weaker, in multiple ways.
the Demon is still dead, they just brought back the human Darla
Why "F" Kansas? 😂
we are building the team. i cant wait.
I miss this show so much. Some of the best cliff hangers and WTF moments. Can’t wait to see your reactions of the things to come. If you know you know.
All non-live performances are lip synced. It's required for good audio. That's still the actor's voice.
3:25Condescending asf, and, his assumptions are wrong every trip. 😒
Tony Amendola!
Lorne time.
I loved these episodes y'all reaction to is so F ing great
Interestingly enough, while deaths did happen, they weren't *super* common.
We need faster uploads😅
Regarding Faith’s future, didn’t you finish Buffy?
They watched angel at the same time as buffy, these edited reactions have just been uploaded later.
@ OHHHHHHHH
I loved that whole debate about whether or not Judy deserved it.
I don't think she did. Without the spell affecting everyone, Judy wouldn't have been in a position where she had to accuse Angel of anything.
Regarding the demon "he sounds familiar" have you watched once upon a time?
The Bellhop didn't kill anybody. so he didn't deserve to die. The lack of empathy from this group *except Rana* is disturbing.
Honestly I’ve noticed more and more they have the weird US racial mindset where characters who don’t look like them get zero empathy and usually some pretty problematic race “joking” but when it’s someone from their group they’ll bend over backwards to excuse their actions.
Love Chris bassicufalling asleep during the jousting :) was this recorded after he became a dad?
Pretty sure this was recorded like a year ago
Dear god yet another classic episode ruined by your constant nit picking and whining.....
you get paid to consume product
Here's a thing I might have others different opinions on,u can accept this idea for the next videos

Hotel was a great set
omg... is the preggo lady the same lady in Logan who takes laura?
No, the one from "Logan", she's probably younger as this was nearly 20 years ago, and she was probably playing about her 30's in "Logan".
