Jose Mourinho is one of the most successful football managers of the current generation. He burst to prominence when he won the Champions League trophy with Porto in 2004. But what was he doing before that? We take a look at Jose Mourinho as a young man, and his role as assistant manager to two of the last generation's greats; Louis Van Gaal and Bobby Robson.

Ben Phone No small feat to come from where he did to becoming a champion with different clubs, a treble after which Juve have been cleaning up the scudetto. I take your point of moneyball, but every team does that nowadays. He approaches the game a different way, its a sport and his journey maybe starts to explain his persona as well as his style and approach to competition. He definitely has my respect.

Strange how Clough got Forrest into Europe with zero support, how benitez got pool to the champions league final with players wrote off at the time, but mash is Barca's best mid fielder of the last ten years, Alonso just retired at Bayern, etc etc. Mourinho got hired because Portuguese football as at its peaks of popularity, but since it's been proven that all Portuguese league was rigged, his accolades has zero worth. Depends on perspective of the person. If you're negative you see it as blaming the board but if you're positive he's only saying he already did his role by submitting his target list of players.

He’s more influential than guardiola for me. Teams in the World Cup have taken after his tactics, France won the World Cup by playing conservative and counterattacking football, not guardiola style. Is he the same manager 5 years ago? No, but stop the revisionist history
eBron James he didn't invent that and it could be argued that he didn't perfect it. Frankly France looked more like an Helenio Herrera side than a Jose Mourinho side. I say this due to their forcing imbalance in terms of width so that they could maintain the offensive and defensive structures so as to play their playmakers in a more free role. Then again Guardiola didn't invent passing, he liked passing with pressing to get the ball back, something even the teams that used the ball more in the tournament didn't do.

Benfica supporter here, those were trouble times at Benfica and the only right thing Vale e Azevedo did right was hiring Mourinho and some great players like Van Hooijdonk or Enke during his tenure where he mostly robbed the club in financial terms, Vilarinho the guy who came next.... probably spend all his tenure doing bad decisions due alcohol abuse and sacking Mourinho after we trash Sporting was sadly very bad.

He's arrogant and thinks too highly of himself and thinks it's the player's fault when something goes wrong and not his (as is the case with Pogba right now, saying it's not up to him to get Paul to perform). He gets into conflicts with the team's star players, and his overly defensive tactics are not allowing his star players to shine (pogba rn, sanchez). He is a great manager and he achieved a lot, but a lot of the hate he gets now isn't undeserved, and what he needs to do to stop it is to leave United
