    Jose Mourinho began his ascent to the top of football management at Benfica and then União de Leiria, but it was at Porto during a two and a half season spell where he really made his name. Working with a squad of older players and astute acquisitions from other, less prestigious teams in Portugal, Mourinho forged a side that won two Portuguese league title, the UEFA Cup and, finally, achieved the remarkable feat of the Champions League title in 2004. It’s unlikely that another side from outside of Europe’s top five leagues will ever win the Champions League again. That Mourinho did it with a squad whose whole was certainly greater than the sum of its parts is testament to a manager who may have fallen behind the times now but, at his pinnacle, was one of football’s great innovators.

    • @ghostknight1865
      @ghostknight1865 5 років тому +47

      @@Vortex__24 No. Conceição has been good for us but he's not a world class coach, and the team is more "workers" than class players. Plus, there are too many other powerhouses around today, not taking any credit from Mourinho but the truth is he won the CL at a point where for 2-3 years there, most if not all the powerhouse teams were weakened. Porto is playing Klopp's Liverpool and just like last season we stand little to no chance of beating them.

      They didn't top their champions league group and I actually thought they were really poor in the last 16 vs ManUtd. Relied on bad decisions to still only squeeze through (typical for Portuguese team's when you look at their national team).
      They then had as easy a champions league route as you're likely to get in the competition. Lyon in QF Deportivo SF Monaco final.
      In fact they faced 3 team's from the French league in that campaign, they had Marseille in their group.

    • @sevenvasco
      @sevenvasco 5 років тому +55

      @@cddb5408 All those teams at the time were some of the best teams in Europe. Marseille had Drogba and Barthez for exemple. United was one of the favourites to win the Champions League on that year, and Porto even played against the "galaticos" Real Madrid team where they draw against them at the Bernabeu. Lyon was 8 times champions of France in a row in that time, with some amazing players like Juninho, Elber, Malouda or Essien. Deportivo was champion of Spain the year after and they knocked out AC Milan with a 4-0 in Spain in the quarter finals. Monaco was also a incredible team with really good players and their attack was really strong. They finished the competition with the most goals scored.
      Porto if have kept that team for more years like Real Madrid or Barcelona do nowadays, they could have won multiple champions leagues titles in a row for sure. That's how good they were at that time.

      Mourinho needs to go back to the roots, pick a lower side and make them achieve greatness. The problem is that he goes to big budget teams, with fans that have highly crazy expectations and players who have a stupid huge ego. Imagine him coaching the current Ajax team. He could make them win the UCL, for real.

    • @s2Capacidade2s
      @s2Capacidade2s 5 років тому +70

      @@kolohaksja2260 nah, Mourinho only 'ruins' teams that are full of superstars, because he is not good at managing egos, especially the new superstars who are arrogant and shallow. Sure he would park the bus in Champions League and that might suit Ajax actually against Juve for example, but in Eredivise he wouldnt do it. When he was in Porto he didnt park the bus in national competitions, just against teams who had better squads like Man United. He was smart enough to study the opponent well. Teams like Ajax, Monaco, Valencia, Wolves, would be good for him to do what he used to do best.

What I meant is he is able to pick the teams with lower budget and make them understand their potential. His problem lately is only picking teams with lots of expensive players and fans who demand immediate results and have too much high standards. He needs to get back where he started, Ajax would be perfect for him, they have a great youth academy like Porto, Eredivisie is full of talents to fish like the portuguese league and they have a great football philisophy and down to Earth fans. Ajax might need to park the bus against teams like Juve or later City if they want to have a shot at the final. That doesnt mean they need to lose their identity in Eredivisie games.

    I got introduced to this team in the 2002-2003 UEFA Cup semi-finals against Lazio. The game was on TV, and I didn't have much to do that day, so I watched the game and was just so impressed by the tenacity of Porto as they shellacked the favored Lazio squad 4-1. Porto then won the UEFA Cup final in a great game against a game Celtic club. When the 2003-2004 Champions league started, Deco and Paula Ferreira were already on the European all-star lists as top players in their positions, Carvalho and Jorge Costa were solid rocks in defense, Costinha and Maniche were capable midfielders, and Derlei was a productive goal scoring striker. With all that, they were still offered at generous odds of 40-1 to win the Champions league, so I took a flyer with them with an each way bet (half my stake on them to finish runner up at 20-1), and thanks to their good play, and some good luck, I was able to buy a new car with the winnings after they won. Was quite a ride, as Derlei went down with a serious knee injury during the year that I figured doomed my chances, but McCarthy stepped up and Derlei returned in the semi's. Got real lucky in the round of 16 2cnd leg against Man U that a Man U goal was incorrectly taken away for offsides that would of seen them go up 2-0 at Old Trafford (Porto had won the first leg 2-1), so a 90th minute free kick deflection put into the net gave us a 1-1 tie and moved them to the next round. Also, the 2003-2004 UCL had the Arsenal invincibles with Henry that didn't lose a single Premier League game all year on their way to the English crown, Real Madrid's galactigos with Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo, Carlos, and Raul, and the defending champion AC Milan squad who would win the Italian League with a prime Kaka, Schevshenko, and plenty of firepower. Oddly enough, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and AC Milan all failed to even make the semi-finals, and Porto didn't have to play any of them. Still remember how nervous I was when Derlei was getting ready to take a penalty kick deep into the second leg at the Riazor against Deportivo LaCaruna in a 0-0 aggregate semi-final. It was then that I realized I might actually win some money. What a glorious ride. Most of my futures bets end up as sad stories, but that one was a bright shining star that will always be a beautiful memory.

      The heat which favoured porto.
      Unfortunate Bobo red card.
      The retirement of lubo that season- moravcik was a truly world class player like Henrik. Porto were weak in the air (two Larsson headers for goals) and with lubo to deliver set pieces to sutton Henrik bobo mjallby and laursen we would probably have won.

    Great video explaining Mourinho's background, training philosophy, squad building and tactical analysis for 2003-04 season, BUT failed to show the 2002-03 tactical approach to the game, which was based on a totally different 4-3-3 wide and attacking formation as opposed to the more controlled and tactical approach of the 4-4-2 diamond displayed on the Champions League winning season.
    Previously the 4-4-2 diamond formation
    had only been used on the final part of the 2003 season, on the QF, SF and Final of the UEFA Cup.
    Those who've followed closely these 2 brilliant seasons know clearly there was a big difference displayed on the gameplaying from one season to the other.
    If you ask any Porto supporter he'll tell you that, despite not being as great of a glory as winning the CL, the football played on the UEFA Cup winning season was much more rewarding and enjoyable to watch.

    The squad wasn't weak at all. Those players weren't hyped and their market value wasn't at it's peak but that happens because of the increasingly speculation surrounding player's nowadays. The same speculation that puts João Felix in Madrid for €124M when he is not even €60M worth. Mourinho knew that very well since his quick stay in Benfica where he made an astonishing campaign with a squad that was really bad beating a great Sporting (who was the champion) 3-0.
    Porto had a very balanced squad with players that respected each other the coach and thd club.
    It is easy to talk about names such as R.Carvalho or Deco but Maniche, Quaresma, J.Costa, Costinha or Alenitchev were just as important. Even McCarthy, P.Ferreira, Pedro Mendes and Bosingwa were determinant for their campaign.
    In his early years Mourinho would never value superstar players. Mourinho loves to coach guys such as Drogba, Deco, Essien, Terry or Materazzi he doesn't get along with players like Pogba, C.Ronaldo, Messi or Neymar.

    An absolute beauty, as a Porto fan i even like more the vid. Really the seasons 02/03 and 03/04 will be forever remember in the history of the modern game especially in the portuguese. I love Mourinho and the big question is that if they all stayed in Porto for more years what could have happen?

    Porto was the last team with a small budget to win the Champions League. They won it with a team built strictly through scouting and buying low cost players and academy players. Now a days only the rich elite and oil money teams make the final.

      So true. The starting XI that won back-to-back European titles 2003-2004 cost just €13.5 million!

      @HarryBalzacc 3 роки тому +6

      starred jelly maybe they haven’t spent big recently in terms of transfers but you can’t compare the wages of Porto and Bayern which accounts for the budget aswell

    No matter what Mourinho does I will always respect his champions league win with Porto, you can't achieve that with the team he had unless you are one hell of a manager and it pisses me off that a lot of football fans seem to have forgotten he did it at all.

    As a Porto fan, I was only 8 when they won the CL trophy. But I still remember it like it was yesterday. Now modern football with these billionaire owners and ridiculous transfer fees is just sad. Really enjoyed watching what Ajax did this season, too bad they didn't win.

    Interesting to note his best starting XI in UEFA Champions League 2004 had 9 Portuguese players yet only 4 of those players were part of Portugal's best starting XI from UEFA Euro 2004. They were Costinha, Ricardo Carvalho, Maniche and Deco. Just shows the depth of the Portugal's national team at that time, still has great depth today

      Teams with rosters capable to compete to win titles and the CL do not want Mourinho anymore. When you have 20 world class players you can't play conservatively and you can't focus on defensive schemes that much. Ir's a waste of talent and supporters get mad. Tottenham is a good team. They can't compete in terms of players and as such they need structure to compensate. I hope they give him a couple of years to build a squad and implement a philosophy.
