    When I was 10yrs old and just starting my journey with drums my uncle gave me his old kit.... a 70's classic Ludwig and as I progressed over the years I managed to find more of the older drums to add to it and by the time I reached my peek I accumulated a massive set 6,8,10,12,13,14,15 toms and 16,18 floor toms, 2 20in kicks as well as a 20 bass gong I made from another kick I found. The sound those old drums produced was phenomenal and I eventually restored them, kept the original hardware, cleaned them up, took the shell wrap off and had the stained to a dark grey. Unfortunately while I was out off town working a hurricane came through and flooded my house, wasn't able to restore after that. Yeah not many 'metal' drummers use Ludwig but the set i had produced amazing sound that was loud and could take one hell of a beating lol 🤘😎🤘

    I grew up playing a Ludwig Accent kit, and for a beginner kit, it's very well made. But I always wanted to switch to a different brand. I always wanted to "upgrade" to Yamaha, or DW, or Pearl, or Tama, or Sonor, or etc. After a while, I bought a snare drum from SJC, and it ended up going on backorder, and my Sweetwater salesman convinced me to get an almost identically specced drum from Ludwig. After I used it for a little while, I started rethinking my opinion on Ludwig. Maybe I should just stick with Ludwig. Not too long after, I went to guitar center, and they had a classic maple kit set up. I played on it, and it blew me away. Ludwig truly does make the best drums on earth. A long time later, I saw Lamb of God play at Aftershock, without listening to them first. To this day, they are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. When I saw Art playing a Ludwig kit on the quarantine jam video, it was almost kind of a full circle feeling for me. I still need to sit behind a classic oak kit, but from what I've heard so far, it sounds amazing

    I used to visit music gear stores a lot when I was younger (I even lived in a condo that was 5 min away walking distance to one of those stores), and I would go around hitting bass drums and drums in general... usually nothing sounds that great in a sales floor, but the times I found drums that sounded amazing it was almost invariably Ludwig Drums. There is something about their sound that I can't explain...that true full drum sound you imagine in your head. I imagine they don't need a lot of tweaking to get good drum sound in the studio. I never owned one tho, I ignored my ears and followed the very effective marketing endorsement of many of my heroes that played Tama back then and invested in those instead...go figure. Not that Tama, Pearl, etc don't make good sounding drums...I have played on pretty much every drumset imaginable thru many years...but they just don't quite sound as naturally good as Ludwig does, they need some extra "work" to get there.

    His set up is identical to Chris Adler's configuration. I haven't seen Art since his days in Winds of Plague. Cool to see how far he has come. It's weird how things work...when you are a struggling session drummer and broke as hell or in a smaller band the drum companies want nothing to do with you and you have to PAY FOR EVERYTHING when it comes to drum gear. Then the same drummer, when they've "made it" in the music industry or drumming for a bigger band like in Arts case, and you can finally actually afford to buy high end gear, the drum companies will literally give you everything and anything FOR FREE.

    • @isihernandez9752
      @isihernandez9752 2 роки тому

      Well, I don't know man. There's a lot of factors involved in the sound other than material: sizes, thickness/construction, heads, tuning, drum sticks used, the drummer itself, mic's and eq, hardware attached to the shell... and in a live show, even the subjective feeling due to the ambiance, the rest of the band, how many beers you took... whatever. I'm not sure in that situation anyone can tell the nuances between 3 different wood species.
      I guess that to state categorically that the differences in sound relies on wood species, a back to back comparison should be done, with the same heads, tuning, drummer, and the same everything, except the wood species. And if possible, a blind test would be ideal.
      That said, any hard and dense wood is, in general, good for a drum, and those 3 species (as well as others) are, so yes, they all sound good.
      I play a maple kit but have also played birch, mahogany, walnut, oak, hybrids... (not all of them were mine)... and at the end of the day, as far as they're quality and well built drums, with a decent hardware, they're all fine.

    • @robinbolton6064
      @robinbolton6064 2 роки тому +1

      @@isihernandez9752 Even with all that....yes you can spot the difference. I talk to drummers too and yes mic's and room dynamics can influence a sound somewhat but there are fundamental characteristics of wood (and alloy too) that are inherent and present irregardless of any other factors.

    • @isihernandez9752
      @isihernandez9752 2 роки тому +1

      @@robinbolton6064 in a studio and controlled situation, maybe... or maybe not. In a live show, with a full band, people all around talking and yelling, and especially in a metal show, with loud and distorted guitars, bass and vocals, and very often triggered drums, and a ton of other variables involved...?? You're joking, aren't you..?? 😂😂😂
      No, man, that's hype and marketing. Many people hear what they're told (through marketing) to hear. Just do some blind tests if you have the occasion and check out by yourself how many of them you get right. Try to honestly figure out if you can even hear any difference at all when all the other variables are matched, and in case you can, try to figure out wich wood species are each shell made of just by the sound. Then, extrapolate the results to a noisy live show enviroment and answer sincerely to yourself this question: are you really able to tell the difference in sound between wood species in a concert, without previously knowing wich species the kit is made of...?
      And all that said, I'm not saying there can't be some differences "under the microscope", but saying that someone can tell the difference, with the number of factors there is involved in sound, and especially in a live set, is just fantasy and marketing suggestion. But hey, perhaps you have the absolutely best ear in the world and I'm just saying nonsenes, who knows... 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Shallower bass drums will always sound better. The "fullness" is something you can get out of any depth, as that factor is mainly determined by the diameter. The best sounding bass drum I've personally ever heard, was a 26 x 14, and I've heard 24 x 14 kicks that sounded amazing in metal contexts. The deeper the bass drum gets, the more muddy it sounds

      I like that he does his best to keep the same style that Chris had. Most other drummers that replace legendary drummers in famous bands completely ignore what was set before them, and the band has to adapt to the new drummer (Slipknot/Jay Weinberg is a perfect example of this scenario), so I say props to Art for staying in the same ballpark, so to speak. I'm not a fan of Art's bass drums sounding like typewriters, but I do like that he's playing Ludwig

      @@ramenthenoodle_ yes. if a metal guy uses something people will think that this is the best for metal. Adler was using a 12" snare, 14 and 15" cymbals, splashes and tiny affects for riding the song, almost no one was using those sizes and this kimd of stuff some years ago.

      Most drummers that play Pearl, Tama, Mapex, or DW live, end up using Ludwig in the studio. Don't believe me, Google it, or watch videos of your favorite drummers in a studio session. The Ludwig Supraphonic snare is the most recorded snare drum in history, and most high end producers swear by it. Even Glenn Fricker from SMG uses the Supraphonic, or the "Holy Grail of snare drums" as he calls it, and he is probably the most stereotypical metal producer of this day and age. Tama is only considered "metal" because Dave Lombardo, Lars Ulrich, and most other thrash drummers played the same 8-9 piece kit in a glossy black finish from Tama. But Ludwig was used by John Bonham from the greatest rock band of all time, Led Zeppelin. Even Kiss' old drummer, Eric Carr, used Ludwig. Neil Peart used Ludwig for a while, and HIM's drummer, Gas Lipstick, switched from Tama to Ludwig. Ludwig is popular with jazz guys because they've been around for as long as jazz has, but that doesn't mean you can't use Ludwig for anything else. It's kinda like a Telecaster guitar. Often used in jazz and country, but some of the greatest metal leads and solos of all time were played and recorded on a Telecaster. And aside of trying to shed light on the versatility of Ludwig's drums, don't get too caught up in all this marketing bs and associating brands with genres, play what sounds good and feels good to you.

      @@jareddoran6605 you said even for a while .ok they used for a while but when D.W or tama step up their game they changed their brand to toama or D.w ... Ludwig is very good during 70 60 80 era but when all metal starting to grow in 80 90 their drum dosnt suit their sound so they ended up changing ... Yes dave and lars popular tama in 80, but two guy cannot change the whole scence soo... Ludwig is good we all know but sometime it dosnt suit for that type of music... Nobody said that ludwig is bad.
