  • We share reality of what a travel day looks like for a full time RV couple. We have a good plan, so what could go possibly go wrong? When you live in a motorhome, as we do, your home and tow vehicle go through extensive wear and tear every time it hits the road. Sometimes your best planning efforts pan out, other times, unpredictable circumstances occur. When you're moving your home on a regular basis, you have to anticipate the unknown and remain flexible. Attitude is everything! Sometimes it's not your home, but the traveling guides and apps that steer you wrong. Have you ever spent all day on the road only to find your destination is closed, uninhabitable, too small, too dirty or just not to your liking? What do you do? Do you have a Plan B? How far do you continue traveling to find a place to sleep? To get water? To find groceries? What happens if your RV (home) breaks down on the side of the highway, miles away from an RV repair facility? What do you do?!
RV'ers and travelers alike are typically a highly resourceful bunch. RV's break down, campsites close, resources are unavailable, storms crop up and life happens! Attitude is everything!
Welcome to our Channel - LYF UNINTERRUPTED:
We are Brian and Shawnna, empty nesters who recently quit our corporate jobs, sold our home and auctioned off just about everything we own to live a simpler, more purposeful life in our RV. As Full Time RV'ers, our goal is to experience life. You could say we "retired" from life as we knew it so traded our stuff for experiences. We travel in a 2008 Winnebago Motorhome (RV) with a preference for RV boondocking. We vlog, blog and update social media with our RV travel experiences, advice and challenges with a goal of helping other RV'ers along the way - find beautiful places to stay and save money!
The RV life is a great life, but it's not without its challenges. We plan to share those with you and offer advice along the way. We hope you'll join our RV life journey.

In 2018 we stayed at the Badlands National Park as tent campers 😁. The wind and the heat were so severe that we went and bought our very first tow behind 19’ camper. We loved it so much that it is now for sale and we have upgraded to a 35’ fifth wheel. We are making plans now to go full time in a few years. We watch a lot of videos of full timers 😃 so thank you for sharing!

Great video! Sorry for the luck you had going to the Badlands. I would not have stayed by any cliffs on a windy day myself. Glad it worked out for you to stay at a camp ground. Did you end up getting your water pump? I was dying to find that out. Or do you have another video on that? Amazon is sometimes the cheapest way to go. Glad you came out ok from the storm. Did get the awning fixed after the Badlands? Or while you were there? Stay safe and safe travels.

He Sherri. Yes, we bought a replacement pump which is still working great. The awning was fine. Just had to extend and retract it and all was good. Dodged a bullet there.

Hey folks, besides duct tape, it's also a good idea to keep ZIP TIES on hand for things like the awning coming undone. Actually, I always keep my awning secured with zip ties as extra precaution even though there's nothing wrong with it. You can link several zip ties together for bigger circumfrence. 🌹

Zip ties, hose clamps of various sizes, good duct tape, roof repair tape, WD40. Hammer, two screwdrivers and whatever random repair-type stuff accumulates. My uncle called it a West Virginia tool lit.

Been there - done that. Lost our awning going into Yellowstone. In our case the locking mechanism at the bottom came loose. Damaged the RV and destroyed the awning frame.
I am a Wyoming native. Expect very strong winds when traveling through Wyoming and all neighboring states. I have seen a number of RVs and a big rigs blown off the road. If you are traveling in high profile vehicles beware of strong cross winds. Also watch your awning when storms come through. The strong winds can destroy an awning and your awning can possibly act as a sail. An urban legend is that in Wyoming we use log chains for wind socks.

I was there the night the trailer went over the edge on the Badlands boondock spot. 75+mph winds and it was only my 2nd night ever staying in an RV! I was SO very thankful to have been further down the ridge. While my RV did rock side to side, mine did not roll over. And I do believe it was because I had the forsight to park my truck alongside my RV, parallel to it and that blocked a portion of the wind gusts. It's a very beautiful spot, but the weather this year has been so volatile that it's become a dangerous spot to be in if there's ANY indication of non-clear skies.
He was not injured from the rollover. I talked to him the next morning, standing by his truck at the spot he was parked. The storm rolled up on us quickly. It even surprised the weather people. It was only supposed to be 30-35mph winds, moderate T-storm, starting around 9:30pm. Within 30 minutes it had whipped up to 75+ mph winds and severe T-storm. The gusts caused one of his window covers on his RV to pop open. He went outside to close it, the wind came rawring through and he ran to his truck that was parked perpendicular to the edge(the trailer was parallel, about 20 yards from the edge). He said he did not actually SEE it roll over as it was too dark, raining hard. He didn't know until the storm had passed around 10:30pm. He ended up staying the rest of the night in a neighboring trailer and hiked back to town the next morning.
There were a couple tenters on either side of me that I checked on when the wind started up. They all made it safely to their vehicles in time to ride out the storm. Their tents were destroyed and broken, sadly. But, no one was injured from the storm.

I can relate. Hit huge pothole on freeway in Kansas City, knocked the under rig jacks down. Skidded on pavement till we could pull over. High winds in Kansas pull out our canopy, flopping all along the side. Hit snow storm in Colorado, windshield wipers stuck. Others also. No guarantees on the road. Be safe, keep the rubber side down.

A early lesson we learned is that we call ahead to see if places are open, if they have a part, and what’s the cost if they have it. Was stuck a few times scurrying to find water too. Plus we had to fork over three times the cost on a stupid part. Also, they make little handy elastic Velcro straps for the awning. They can be a life saver. If you’re handy, you can just buy 2” heavy duty Velcro and make your own. Safe travels.

We found parking for our RV just canti-cornered across the road from Wall Drug. If I'm remembering correctly, it was free. Seems like I remember a lot of truckers parking there. It was near those water towers(?) or storage bins(?). (Sorry, getting old, memory worn out and we traveled for a few months, so it's all starting to run together.) Just walked across the field and street to get to Wall Drug. If you get back that way, check it out.

One time when I was a kid my dad stopped at the side of the road to see if he could help a man, whose trailer went down an embankment. After begging and pleading they let me get out and see the wreckage! WOW! The whole thing kind of looked flattened out because of how it folded when it went down. That has stayed in my mind, and use extra caution when moving our travel trailer. But we are only weekend warriors, but it still could happen to us!

Thanks for presenting issues that are not glamorous. We are in the early planning, maybe exploring is more appropriate, stages of a full-time lifestyle. I am curious about the flexibility of reservations. Our plan is to spend several days at any location so we can really get to know an area. But, if we find we don’t like the area or park we are in do they hold you to the full reservation or allow “early checkout “? Thanks again, we are just short of binge watching your videos from the beginning and learning a lot.

I am glad you have the Jeep to scout things out! My husband drives the car in front of me when I tow our 5th wheel but it was good you were behind when that awning came loose! We are not new to this. Some days can be memorably rotten. Other days are amazingly lucky. I don't think it matters much how new or old you are to this. Do you just put the Jeep transfer case in neutral to tow the jeep? Nice video. I had an 8 foot $200 camper in my 77 Chevy 3/4 ton camper special, and while coming back from the Barstow area and down close to Riverside we were getting severe wind gusts from the side. It did not bother my rig, but there was an older International 1/2 ton pickup in front of me. It also had a camper in the bed. A sudden gust of wind from the side caused the International pickup's rear bumper to actually hit the pavement. It scared him so bad that he backed off the freeway in line with the wind and parked. I did not blame him! There were a few other R/Vs parked because of the wind.

ByBL- 😠 Bad experience in South Dakota by the Badlands Park. We were driving our motorhome. We came out the Southern route from Mount Rushmore area and have already been through the Badlands numerous times. We were on our way back home and the, 🤬 (this is how mad I was) lady at the park entrance would not let us drive the few miles to get to the HWY. ( NO signs anywhere indicating you couldn't get to the highway going that way) It was so far back West to the Black Hills area and going East it was all back roads. Because of her she caused us to put on 4 hours more onto our trip back home and it was already getting late 😠. With no towns for gas in site. I wrote the Park Department about that and WE HAVEN'T been back to South Dakota for 8 years now.

Oh, thank God, people who actually have their heads screwed on straight about how to travel with dogs! It just freaks me out when I see people leaving them loose in their rigs (or cars), even sitting on the front seat. The odds are astronomical that they *will* be killed, or at least severely injured, in any accident if they are floating around loose. They can also get down into the driver’s footwell and interfere with his or her use of the pedals, which could have fatal results.
Seat belts are not perfect for dogs, and they can still injure the dog, but I can tell you from experience that at least it stops them from turning into projectiles and being killed slamming into a seat or going through the windshield in the event of an accident or really hard braking.
I’m so sorry you ran into so much trouble that day. It’s a good thing you did trust your gut.
They ought to also keep the dogs from escaping and running away after an accident. I found my dog was able to get out of his seatbelt harness when he absolutely had to, though, but the odds of keeping the dogs inside and safe are much better with one than without.

I can’t remember for sure but there is a decent rest stop East or west of wall drug off the highway. I’ve overnighted at it a couple times with no problem.
Found it. Chamberlain visitor center. East of wall drug. There is another test stop another 50 miles east as well. They say there is a 4 hour limit. I have stayed 3 times now neatly away from the entrance. Put my whiteboard in the window with my usual note. “Exhausted from a full day of driving. Stopped to rest for the night to drive safely tomorrow. If a problem with where I am parked please call me and I will move.” Never got a call. Got up next morning refreshed and moved on to wall.
I’ve found in every state of been in no matter what’s posted if you leave a note in window with your number and saying your resting, no pd will ever bother you.
Other trick. Pull in at around 6. Sleep and Leave at midnight. Pull into next stop down the road and sleep another 5 to 6 hours. The signs say no OVER night parking. But you aren’t staying OVERnight. Only staying half the night. Lol. It works. And after 5 hours of sleeping I have to get up to go to bathroom. So may as well drive a little further to next stop. Days of sleeping a full 8 hour night without a couple bathroom trips were gone long ago. Lol

Because that’s what it sounded like. There is a nice campground a mile or so from the visitors center that has hookups and is something like 20 bucks. Yes, you have to have a pass or pay to get into the park, but that’s kind of why you travel there, isn’t it? We had the same thing happen to us this spring we were traveling to a local camp sit for Mothers Day and driving down interstate we heard all this noise on the roof of our rv so we pulled off the side to get out and look and the awning was up on the roof couldn't believe it. So we very slowly drove down the road a couple of miles to the exit and we got to an Ace Hardware as we didn't have a ladder on the back or any kind of ladder at all so we could get on the roof. The manager of the hardware store gave us a ladder to us and I was able to remove the awning, I just cut if off as it was toast anyway and I was able to slide the awning tub through the driver side window and into the rv as it is very long and went on our way to our camp site. I have discovered later that many people use a velcro strap and wrap around each arm so this doesn't happen so thats what I do now. Theres more to the story but not going to go into that so just glade you saw that and was able to avoid a problem

Not because you are new at it, things always go wrong and things always go right depends how you look at it.

We do stay at Walmart, but typically go for Cracker Barrel if there’s one in the same vicinity. Most Walmart’s are getting a little dicey these days.

OMG, when I saw the picture of the RV down the embankment in the beginning of the video, I thought it was yours!!! Thank God it wasn't!
What a video, what a day, what an experience! We always double the time too, good idea! 👍🏼
Our house still hasn't sold, it's been 114° - 115° the last few days, our motorhome can't handle it! We had to buy a $600+ portable air conditioner, it still gets up into the mid nineties in the RV! 😢
We're going to California in August for two weeks, my husband's vacation, when we get back, if the house is still not sold, we're giving up and moving back in. 😢
I've never been a quitter but this heat wins! We'll keep the house for sale, when it sells, my husband will retire and we'll regroup.
Sometimes our plans are not what GOD has planned.... we'll eventually get on the road. 🙏🇺🇸
