An iconic performance that got Janis discovered and lead her to getting signed by a record company. The large lady that is in the audience is Mama Cass Elliot, of the Mama and Papas, like everyone else that was there, she was blown away.
@@panpdx8919 I was in a bar in SF in the late 60's, and the band that playing there had the best female Blues singer I had ever heard, in my young life. Lo and behold, it was Big Brother with Janis. She blew away everyone in that bar. My first and only time seeing her live.
Cass Elliot's reaction of "WOW!" is something special. Cass was one of the leading entertainers in the world when this concert was held. And for her to be in awe of Janis' raw talent is a huge statement. She had every right to be in awe. As astonishingly talented that Cass Elliot was, she was not in Janis' league.
@@ytbabbler Yeah, and Elvis was a great singer who died on the toilet. What is your point in noting that? What possible relevance could it have to this?
Mama Cass Elliot, a great singer in her own right, appreciating the talents of another great singer who would be taken from us too soon just like Cass.
that lady in the audience was the headliner at that concert. they were the biggest band at that time. she said oh shit call my agent and talk retirement
Thank you for showing this truly epic performance... Janis is much better seen than just heard... The power she puts into a song is amazing!! She is another great that is gone much too soon... Thanks again...
That lady in the crowd your referring to is Cass Elliot formerly of the Mamas and Papas band. She was one of the best to ever do it beside the great Janis. She passed away in 1975 due to heart failure 💔😔
My love Janis Joplin! Mama Cass completely blown away! Hated commercials during the video. Even when leaving comment. Sold out. You are a beautiful woman Empress Joy Jean. Bye. Respect and Love
The woman in the audience was Mamma Cass (and she was the lead singer in the Mamma and the Papas). She was the promoter of this festival. She was unknown before this concert. She was 'discovered' and signed to a record deal from her performance at this concert. And btw Janis was 24 years old in that performance.
Her natural vocal talent was unmatched at the time. Janis was to blues, rock and soul what Barbra Streisand was to pop and show music in her heyday. They were both awarded one of a kind singing voices and musical instincts at birth.
Janis was an awesome singer who stood all by herself as a talent. She had an amazing raspy voice. She had her backup band Big Brother which were awesome also. She put her heart and soul into her singing with a lot of soul. RIP
Empress as usual great reaction...Janis Joplin. The Queen of Rock n Roll will live on forever..'She could knock down a brick wall.with her voice"...HA HA....I Love It......Vintage Classic Rock n Roll at it's best....Keep On Rockin Empress...
That Lady's Face... She is the FAMOUS SINGER, MAMA CASS ELLIOT, from the pop/rock band 'The Mama's and Papa's'! YOU had a great reaction! A Great singer who was astonished to see the incredible Janis Joplin that day.
Exactly that you’re right 😉👌imagine at that time of that performance she wasn’t very popular but you can see that even well known popular singers could see how exceptional she was 😉👍
The only person to play two sets at Monterey. She opened up on the Saturday afternoon with a five-song set, had everybody dropping jaws, and they had nothing on film because nobody knew what a superstar she was. They squeezed in a brief two-song set at the beginning of the Sunday evening just to catch her on film.
The lady in the audience is Mama Cass Elliot, a great singer in her own right. Clive Davis subsequently got Janis & Big Brother & The Holding company signed to CBS.
I was young when I first heard her sing. My brother went to see her and brought her album home.I was only 14 when she died and I cried and I'm crying now...50 years later.
This was a real classic performance, and so early in her career too (1967). Not all of her performances were this good. This was her -- young, and hungry.
The rasp in her voice is like somebody scraping silk with a trowel. Unmatched in rock n roll. RIP. I wish I could have told her poor suffering soul how beautiful she was.
That woman in the audience is Cass Elliot, a performer herself in a group called the Mama's and the Papa's. This was one of Janis' early performances, a new singer at the Monterey Pop festival.
The lady with "the look" is Cass Elliot, member of "The Mamas And Papas" and a hell of a singer in her own right..... You ought to check her out as well.
You know what Joy that lady in the audience she was actually very famous she was a singer in The Mamas & the Papas her name is Mama Cass they did hit songs like California Dreamin Monday Monday among others yeah they were big in the 60s obviously that's why the cameramen focused in on her yeah I love the last line in that song she just has so much expression and feeling in it it's like you couldn't make that up that was real she was expressing real emotions
I don't like the analogy. A dethroned queen would be a vindictive b----. Cass is showing nothing but genuine astonishment and appreciation. Game recognizing game.
Geez, I was 14 years old when this was going on. Janis wasn't played on the radio yet. This was a big moment for her, and some others at this music festival. Jimi Hendrix became a big star at this festival, although he was a hit in the UK, already. I enjoy your reactions. I wish that the artists’ window was bigger, yet you stay the same size but moved more to the side to accommodate it. My 68-year-old eyes couldn't see Cass Elliott in that postage stamp window.
Here is some little known trivia, this is the second time they played this at the same festival as she was not known at the time and she was so GREAT the first time but the cameras were not on so they asked them to come back to and we are so thankful that they got it on film
The Mamas & Papas, especially the Philips, organized and financed this Monterey Pop festival... So Cass' main reaction is pure appreciation! This festival introduced many seminal performers to the larger music community, including Jimi Hendrix and the Who. There's a great doc film on the huge cultural influence of the festival: ua-cam.com/video/OnV34yEby44/v-deo.html Peace&Love
Appreciation and also the fact that they didn't make a mistake by booking Janis Joplin at that show!! Mama Cass was probably thinking to herself all the hype was absolutely one hundred percent correct this girl can sing her ass off!!!
Janis had more soul than the world could give, thats why she passed so young. At least thats what I think, she had a rough childhood and was around in the "Era of Love" where drugs were common and easy to do harm.
I lived in the SF bay area when they were getting started and I saw them/her at be-ins, free outdoor concerts and at the fillmore...I saw her often enough that when she got to the point where she would precede a song with a twenty minute description of how she'd seen some stud with a hot ass in a pair of tight jeans...I just wanted her to stfu and sing...but the era of personality over music had begun...and when I was in the stockade during the war they would play joplin and hendrix over the loudspeakers while armed guards and prisoners alike were 'goovin' - 'surreal' doesn't even cover it

At the time, Mama Cass was arguably the best-known female singer of the genre while Janis was largely unknown outside of the Haight.

IMHO one of the greatest moments in 20th century rock. "Iconic" doesn't say the half of it.
