Guest's wife has talked before about how quiet and reserved her husband is, and how he likes to go to France because he doesn't know the language so he can just can sit and read the paper rather than have to converse with anyone.

@E.A. de Ruiter I actually took a little 5 week intro to Portugese adult ed course many yrs ago. It was difficult for me to do the nasal whine sounded Asian influenced. Then sometimes I could hear what sounded like Russian influence. I thought it would be easier for me because I had studied Latin but without an Italian background I struggled. Very lyrical language with lots of topography so to speak...

@@kathrynfauble9053 On the set of ALMOST HEROES where I met him, he was dressed casual, button down shirt. He is handsome with his white hair. I was an extra in ALMOST HEROES playing an Aristocrat at the party that Chris Farley and Matthew Perry attended in the movie. Farley was very nice and told me I reminded him of Jon Lovitz. Great fun. I think Chris Guest is very talented. He seemed quite serious on the set. Happy I got to meet him.

Agreed. “Awkward” has become a buzzword. Imagine: we’ve come to a point in this culture where hearing people talk in their own voices rather than phony valley girl/tech bro speak is considered “awkward”. A normal conversation is considered “awkward”. When Grier starts talking about selling out at 7:23, the milieu he describes is common these days. And nobody points this out. In its own way, we’re living in the 50s all over again.

That was so embarrassing that I nearly thought it was staged as a promo for the equally mocking "Waiting for Guffman." I was embarrassed, and Mr. Guest was visibly irritated, that Mr. Grier asked banal questions about Guests' royal title (which he clearly held no interest to him) or Black History Month and other impertinent points that took away, in true Guffman style, from the principal reason that Guest was there -- to talk about his movie. Guest, with his particularly wicked attitude, is giving Grier a lashing, which in my opinion is deserved. It often seemed that Grier wasn't aware that a bored Guest was toying with him like a cat. (As a host, Grier's also weak and facile, a talking head that doesn't really know how to make a conversation engaging). How embarrassing to watch Grier play the race card, confusing "black face" with creating an endearing black character. I'm not sure if it was on purpose when at the closing of the interview Grier cuts Guest off in mid-sentence (spot on the word "rage"); either way, it was crass.

Grier was trying to make the entire interview about himself and how jealous he was and was making Guest somehow feel bad for his success, as well as blindsiding Guest with bizarre accusations of racism, especially the Crystal blues sketch. I get the feeling that Grier just doesn't like the guy - maybe he auditioned and didn't get a part - I have no idea, but the hostility from Grief is evident the moment Guest sat down. This wasn't Guest being aloof - this was Grier being an asshole and Guest having the calm and wit enough to handle it, which frustrated Grier even more.

Ouch...this is hard to watch. Unprepared interviewer feigning laughter awkwardly slowly drowning in his own show. Christopher Guest playing it very straight and just giving him enough to bury himself with. Cringe......I almost couldn't watch.

I don't get it. Wasn't the tension and awkwardness the intention?! DAG even says "They told me you'd be difficult" and he was, but I think it was part of the bit. Kinda like how that Craig Ferguson used to have "awkward silence" moments, on purpose, with his guests. It's funny as hell! Also, how is anyone blaming anyone here?! If it WASN'T a skit, it would be Guest taking the blame cuz he refused to answer or even play along with anything. I don't see Letterman or Carson doing better. If the Guest clams up and gives very short answers, what are you to do?

  • @MrTCHOSS

Grier blew it by not having real questions. He just mumbled on and went on tangents. Asked a lot of yes/no questions. I know he was a guest host --- but he should never be an interviewer.

Seems more like tension and awkwardness that was brought into the interview. I love Guest and all his work, but he certainly had a bug up his ass about something, either directly related to Grier or took it out on Grier. He even mentions, “this is me having a temper tantrum.”

Sharon Scanlon Yeah, when we see people come out for these interviews, they’ve been backstage being either poured-over or neglected for hours in makeup or pre-interview (where the blue cards come from), so he might’ve arrived with a bug already up his ass or effectively had it placed there by the crew, before walking out to give this interview. Not to defend him necessarily, because he can be a prickly interview subject.

    .
I wonder if, initially, he was put off by Grier's CONSTANT chatter (possibly due to nerves?),.....instead of simply asking a question, and then SHUTTING UP long enough to let Guest answer it, rather than constantly talking over him.
Also, even though Grier goes overboard in praising Guest it, unfortunately, comes off seeming a bit insincere......and maybe that, combined with the fact that (almost) right at the start, Grier actually says to him, "They told me you were going to be difficult....." !!!
I'm sorry, but being told that during the course of an interview just CANNOT be helpful to ANY guest trying to make 'small talk', on camera, in front of a live studio audience....
However, to Christopher Guest's credit, he never checked out, and eventually 'warmed up' to Grier's "style", and somehow made it work.....
    .

Guest was such an unusual guy . I meet celebrities through work and met him in early 2000's.
He was really impossible to interact with .
You tell him you are a huge fan and he stonewalls you . He wasn't funny and I don't think he smiled let alone laughed .
And this was a charity event.
Shearer and McLean were brilliant though .

Holy shit. That was awful. It all started within the first 5 minutes. "They told me you were going to be difficult." DAG should not have said that. But then again, who knows how far CG would have gone with his annoying rudeness if that had not been said. This is just awful. It does appear that CG started it all. He couldn't just accept that DAG sucked as a host. He just had to be a weird jerk about it. So uncool. And he kept up with his rudeness till the end, but not terribly so.

In the '90's anyone would be offered a late night talk show. Almost all of them failed because they put more stock in the popularity of the host than the talent. These are a few that turned them down: David Spade, Cher, Bill Cosby(3 times), Louie Anderson, Rodman, Tom Arnold, and Hank Azariea (voice of Homer Simpson). LOL Arnold Schwarzenegger is now being courted & groomed for a new late show if he can get out of his NBC only contract. Don King and Spike Lee are supposed to be doing some project for BET, but Lee is being "difficult" (go figure).
