Driving around Gloucester in 1982

- I found this video of my Father and Grandfather driving from Quedgeley to longlevens around 1982. Here you can see just how much Gloucester has changed in those years. They drive from Quedgeley, down Bristol road, into the centre of town, down towards Longford where you can see the Longford bypass being constructed.
A lot of you didn't like the music track, apologies, it's quite difficult finding non copyright music to use on UA-cam. It has now been changed.
Thanks for watching.

There's something about this that makes me incredibly emotional. The music, knowing we can't get time back, simpler times of being driven around as a child. Thank you.
Took the words right out of my mouth.

Its remarkable how few cars are parked along the Bristol Road.
I was brought up in Gloucester, and left as an 18 year old in 1992 to go to uni. In my head, this is still how Gloucester *should* look :)
spent 80 to 84 there at RAF Innsworth. Loved the place. Tracy's , Snobs's, The Tabard, The Golden Cross , The Pint Pot. I could go on. As a young 18 year old I thought the place was brilliant.Brings back many happy memories.
I live in innsworth
Not long ago I used to walk down Bristol Road every day to work in town. It's so strange seeing it back then compared to now. Also I barely remember that roundabout from the A38 to Bristol Road. It was taken down when I was about 6 (1996?).
It was when I started work in the Forest of Dean which would be late 1996, yes. Maybe 1997.
I was born in 82 and up until recently, lived on Linden Road, just out of shot. I completely forgot argos was in that location until I saw the footage. I remember that roundabout too... Used to have a suitably named pub there 😂
Leon James i lived in king edwards avenue from 1977-83, just round the corner from you then 😀
We know each other.
Leon it's been many years since Severn Vale school.
I hope you are well 👍🏼
@@Tom_Prendiville Yes Tom. Long time no see! Hope you're well mate.
@@leonjames2764 I'm very well, just getting old Bro 🤣.
My sister still lives in our childhood house in tuffley and I'm all the way up north in sunny Newcastle.
I hope life's treating you well 👍🏼
Really interesting!! Its great to see old footage of the city.
Very familiar. I grew up in Linden - if you'd turned right at The Avenue onto Tuffley Avenue, you would have been going past our house. My brother lived out in Quedgeley, so we travelled along Bristol Road a great deal then. Really surprise at how little traffic there was. I moved away from Gloucester about 2008 and visited about 3 years ago, was really shocked at how many cars there are now.
Yes, I know Gloucester has always been a bit of a shit-hole, but it was home to me, and though I live in California now, I really do miss the place.
lovely to watch. I lived in Glos for almost ten years and I think about it all the time :(
Incredible footage. Thank you for sharing.
Childhood memories! Born in 1970 used to go shopping in Gloucester most weekends. It's much improved nowadays.
Improved how?..we had some nice shops in gloucester then...fountains in kings square...now look at the state of it
Brilliant video lived in Gloucester most of my life , happy memories .
Wish I was born then, life seemed so good then
Oh it was! We can't go back! Breaks my heart.
I'd go back in a heartbeat if I could
Born in 65. Brought back so many memories. Permali on Bristol Road for example.
🙋
I remember when Cole Avenue roundabout was there, with a big willow tree in the middle. There was also that nightclub on the corner, you can see it on the right as they exit the roundabout. A lot of it looks similar. Marshall Langton corrugated cardboard on the left just by the Hempstead bridge and then the chemical plant on the right just after the railway bridge.
The nightclub had many names over the years but I remember it when it was called "The Roundabout", it was knocked down and pets at home replaced it.
I used to live opposite The Gladiator pub when in the 80's and 90's and still to this day my sister lives in that house.
I'm in the northeast now but still go there from time to time.
I remember Cole Avenue being built in the 50s, and Mr. Cole himself, a small old man, cheerful and active.
As a Gloucester lad who worked in Bristol for years it was nice to see the video start at the Almondsbury interchange. What amazing foresight the person had to film this.

Thank you for posting! Brings back tears. Plus I actually liked the music and usually I don't!
Lived in Glos for 53 years ,boy it's changed ,drive down Bristol Rd today, I remember the last day you could drive through the cross in town ,I must of done it 10 times on my motorbike that day lol
Nice.
Thanks for sharing 👍
wow its changed loads over the past 34 years
in some ways, but not so much in others... its my home... its small and cosy, I'd move closer to the coast as that's my dream but Gloucester will always be home... i was born in 81.. the end of the analog era..
Sadly mostly for the worst and not the better in a lot of ways with endless developments gobbling the countryside and overpopulation plus historical buildings being left to rot and then knocked down for eyesore prison looking new builds. Same with Hereford.
Would of loved to see more I was born (1957) and raised in Gloucester, over the years we lived at Longlevens then moved to Tuffley. This brought back many memories of Gloucester for me, I am now 62 and an Australian citizen and have been back to visit 3 times since we emigrated in 1982. If anyone knows of any other films taken in Gloucester I would love to see them.
Kay Marl Glad you enjoyed the video. Might I suggest a group on Facebook called Gloucester: A trip back in time. There are many photos and some video of years gone by on there.
Back when I was in a nutty sack miss those days
Awesome little journey. It’s the same now.... but different too.
Year I was born ❤
Really interesting, especially seeing the shops in Southgate st and Northgate st being occupied. Most are empty now and in the future will probably be developed into housing.
I was born in 82 in poland, lived in gloucester 2006-2012 :)
To think that Fred West will have been in close proximity to you while filming this
I mean, they never went anywhere near his street
@@elizabethkate3207 relatively speaking though.
Moved to the Forest in 82 from Kent, and condidered Gloucester at that time really easy traffic wise ,this film shows that. Anybody could spot a Forest vehicle in Gloucester,as they drove around a s snails pace, unlike on their home patch which they treated like the Nurenburg Ring
Please record in 1080p next time
Personal video cameras were quite rare back then, was there any audio with this originally?
Indeed they were. My father was very lucky to own one. And yes, there was sound in the original, but due to the age it’s become very distorted.
39 years later…
its so different from now
Player 420 a bit less traffic on the road
Bartie, the new music is fine, but may I have the info if the old tune you'd used please? It's a great video.
the lack of people is always weird,
😁👍
Is your blueyonder email account from 1982 too?
Hasn’t changed a bit 😊
I moved from Barton Street to Podsmead when I was 6 years old back in 1991. I remember a roundabout at the end of Cole Avenue, at the site of the current intersection by KFC. I recall it was known as Quincy's Roundabout, owing to a Quincy's restaurant occupying the current KFC. It was then Quincy's lights after the current layout was built. Is the roundabout in the beginning of the video the same roundabout?
Yes it is. Long gone now. ☺
What's the music Simon? It's really evocative. Shame Gloucester is such a ghost town these days!
Darryl Bullock The music was suggested by UA-cam and I didn't get the name of it unfortunately. I had to remove the original soundtrack for copyright reasons.
Glad you enjoyed the video. I will hopefully be adding more of Gloucester soon.
Simon Bartholomew thanks for that, and for the memories ;-)
+Darryl Bullock Music is "Running in the Rain" By "your world within" great Vid, Simon Bartholomew What was your cap device as i see it freezing every few seconds ?
+Chris Burnett Thank you Chris. There is no freezing that I can see, on the original or on my devices watching the video on UA-cam. Very strange.....
Better before the new traffic lights layout in 2006

Fred West at his height at his most perverse at this time
I reckon it's a couple of years earlier than '82. I would take a stab at '78 or 79.
+John Smith I'm in the other parts of the video, about three or four and I was born in 1978 :)
Nice film of gloucester in the early 1980s. Then in the 1990s the police were called to a house in cromwell street where they made shocking discoveries of young women murdered at the hands of rosemary and fred west. They were both depraved abducting them having sex with strangers then killing them. Fred committed suicide but his partner in crime was found guilty and she will spend the rest of her life in a womans prison without parole. Horrible couple.
Visit Fred & Rose West house
I would if it was still there. It’s a flat piece of land now.
I think these videos would be greatly improved if only we could see where we are! Can’t read any signposts or street signs, is it a mystery tour? Very disappointing. I was brought up in Gloucester in the 40s and 50s and would love to know where I am in these films! But no, every sign is fuzzy and unreadable. Sigh.
lovely to watch ...but the music is awful!!
