    I use MIDI Guitar 2 strictly for triggering my software synths, never delving into its internal workings. And love it just for that! An awesome program when paired with great synths and your guitar adding so much to the standard electric guitar sound. I'm never going back, It's a game changer for me!

      To each his own. Some like to tinker under the hood, and write scripts and whatnot, whereas others like just the easy access it provide to our synths. The great thing is that it actually works for almost everyone. I agree with the "never going back" sentiment. I can't see myself use anything else. 😀

      Well, it seems like the extended range guitars bit need some extra attention and will not, as far as I understand it, be part of the betatest edition. It is supposed to be included, at a later date unfortunately. It has been so generally, that the lower you go, the slower the conversion to MIDI, and it hasn’t been good enough yet. Thank you for your kind words, and I hope you understand 🙏🙏🙏

      I think so too, and from having listened in to some the most passionate and opinionated voices in the more popular forums discussing this topic, I am a little surprised by the lukewarm reception I get with this here generally. But I believe MG3 is going to be something special, as far as MIDI/MPE controllers go. Especially since it really is something many of us know and use already (a simple guitar). But also since, this time around, you perhaps does not have to relearn, or think too much about using it, AND it adds something special - a natural way of infusing life into recording or preforming, with bends and vibrato so readily accessible. 😃👍

Updates are always great but only if I have the time and the means to actually use them. One day I hope to use it in a live setting and have full control over the mix of my synths and instrument signals. This is great LoFiLeif! Can’t wait to get MG3! I apologise in case I missed you already addressing this in the video, but let’s say I record a progression of string chords as midi on Logic with the infinite sustain function, will the infinite sustain still be there when I subsequently playback the midi region I just recorded, while contemporarily recording a solo on another midi instrument track? Thanks

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  4 місяці тому

      Yes, you "record" the infinite sustain message as well. (I just tried it to make sure). Thing is, it isn't really any additional message we are talking about here ,but the opposite. Infinite sustain is essentially just telling the synth not to listen to the "note off" message, by taking it away. So it is going to change with any new "note on" messages, but not register the string energy indicating it is off. And the lack of "note off" message is affecting the recorded MIDI, so you will have that effect on playback as well, just as it sounded when you recorded it. 👍

      @@lofileif Hi Lofileif! I just purchased Midi Guitar, using the “3.0.47 beta stable” and loving it.
      I definitely feel an improvement in tracking on v3, really enjoying it!
      “Infinite sustain” is very easy to use and very forgiving, differently from other basic Logic scripts it also allows to move one note of the chord without cutting off all the others, until you actually change the chord, I love that.
      Since there still isn’t a finished detailed manual I’d like to ask you a question if I may...
      Can I actually record the midi of an instrument played with infinite sustain?
      The way I’ve done it so far is by opening MG3 as usual on an audio track where the guitar inputs, and activate input monitoring. In this way I can play any midi instrument Kontakt track I select. But in order to use “Infinite sustain” I need to open Kontakt inside of MG3 by creating a new patch, and in this way if I record I of course end up recording an audio region (clean guitar that plays infinite sustain while in rec and playback).
      Is there a way to use MG3’s wonderful “infinite sustain” on an MIDI instrument track (using Kontakt) and recording a midi region that will also playback the “infinite sustain” when I play it back?
      Thanks for your help!!

    • @lofileif

      @@pucciopucci7540 I guess you haven't tried yet? Just set up with your standard DAW setup (MG3 on a Audio Track with the "MIDI Guitar MINI" patch loaded.) Open a sutainer module and record onto a software/MIDI track. You don't need to record audio or anything. Your MIDI recording will contain the sustain message (which is really the lack of note off messages) You can switch instruments afterward if you like. But to begin with: MG3 (with the sustain module open in one slot) on an AUDIO track and Kontakt on a MIDI track. Record enable the MIDI track, and record. It is all there is to it. 👍

      @@lofileif LoFileIf, my bad, you’re perfectly right! Don’t know why I went straigth for “new patch” instead of just adding it to the default Midi Guitar Mini patch. The sustainer works like a charm!!
      Since we’re here, is there a way to toggle the sustainer on and off in Logic Pro via some command sent from Logic Remote Control iOS app? I would like to use it live and I would like to toggle the infinite sustain using the commands that are available on the Logic Remote Control, Maybe through a key command assigned to it? Or some CC or other?
      Better still, is there a way to somehow pre-program instructions into some instrument track (all used within Kontakt) to directly activate or deactivate the sustain insert in the MG3 on its audio track? In an ideal world I would select an instrument track in logic (using Logic Remote Control), and the instrument track would directly instruct the MG3 plugin to activate or deactivate the Sustainer...
      Thanks for your help:)

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  6 місяців тому +1

      That is my JB-145 Archtop from Straight Ahead Samples set up to work in multimode for polyphonic bends. And yes, MPE is MIDI, and it will record into logic without issue. It just uses MIDI messages and MIDI Channels a little differently.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  6 місяців тому +1

      Hi Chris! That is unfortunately going to have to wait until I get some answers back from developers. Since this is an MPE instrument it is particularly well suited for playing virtual guitar instruments. It really doesn't have to be full MPE capability instruments. It is enough they support polyphonic bends (on multiple channels). So I have a little query out among some of the developers that might be interesting, like Ample Sound and Orange Tree (which I haven't contacted yet), about how to improve their particular instruments to suit the MIDI Guitar concept better. In a few cases, it is as easy as just allowing for pitch bends in a Kontakt library so I build my own multis. I asked Spitfire Audio about this for the Soft Nylon, but the answer was "I have passed on your feedback to the relevant team. While your comments are valuable to us, I would not expect a reply on this matter and it is unlikely that we would add pitch bend to Soft Nylon Guitar". So that is a no go, unfortunately. I have also reached out to the developer himself, but I can't say at this point I am convinced something will happen. Long story short; developers still write their instruments exclusively for Keyboards, and a long as that is the norm I won't be recommending them for MIDI Guitar purposes, because they don't work good enough. Check out the existing MPE synths guitars, like ROLI's Equator or Pianoteq's Nylon. Not all the way there yet, but I will return as soon as I have something new on this matter to say.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  5 місяців тому

      If you are thinking about the infinite sustain function, it works on whatever you trigger. If you play a chord, it will hold that chord until next input notes. If you play single notes, it will hold those in the same way. The good thing here is that it isn't a question about either/or. You can play in a perfectly normal way, but just have whatever you end up on sustain (forever if you like it to). (It doesn't give it that extra energy bump you get from a sustainer PU or an eBow though, but you can even emulate that with the use of the new MG3 Modulators ADSR envelope if you like)

  • @dogman5680
    @dogman5680 7 місяців тому +1

    This is all well and good but when I think about sustain and guitar, I think about the natural decay of a guitar string. With the Fishman triple play, for example I had to be constantly aware of how long I was holding a note, particularly if I was adding vibrato. What would inevitably happen is the pickup would stop listening to the string so to speak, even though I was still playing it. But the synth sound wouldn’t stop.… It would continue to play now out of tune because it seems to have stopped getting pitch input and stopped during the cycle of my vibrato if that makes any sense? Even my old Roland GR 33 was much better in this regard- synthesized sound would follow the natural decay. Have you done any experiments with this? Can you hold a note or a chord and add subtle (or aggressive)vibrato through its duration and have it continues to track?

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  7 місяців тому

      Well, as I explained in the video there are three functions to the Sustain pedal: and the one most resembling what you are talking about is of course Infinite sustain. And this effect, that you can get a wrong freeze note, is due to the fact that the translation process don't count the lack of velocity (or pressure rather) as a reason to stop the note from ringing. It skips the note off instruction. Most likely because it would have produced very short notes otherwise? With this solution you get longer notes but at the expense of pitch precision. It is the same for the Infinite Sustain here. If you are vibrating or bending a note at the time it cuts off or "actually stops ringing" you get that note ad infinitum. That is why I suggest you use the palm mute strategy for this function. Whenever you feel happy with what you got, you stop the strings from ringing. It wont stop the sound, but all new information to it. This , however, is probably just a solution for extreme case. You will be fine using the software without the assistance of the Infinite sustain. You have a great sustain anyway. I have somewhere between 8-17 seconds depending on place on the neck and string qualities. And this is usually way beyond what I would need for any one note or chord. And without this pedal, the pitch bend info follow the note on and off, leaving no room for wayward or stray pitches.

    • @dogman5680
      @dogman5680 7 місяців тому +1

      @@lofileif thanks for your answer, I wonder if you could answer one more thing? With MG2 when stopping a note, there wiould be a drastic wandering of pitch… Lifting the left hand from a cord or note, would make the pitch drop substantially and gently muting with the right hand would create a rise in pitch (if I remember correctly?) No amount of tweaking would stop this behaviour and this alone made MG2 mostly unuseable for me. Have you experienced this and Has MG3 fixed it?

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  7 місяців тому

      @dogman5680 I believe most of that behavior is remedied. I am not going to say all, because it depends to a high degree on what instruments you play. Virtual guitars have been notoriusly sensitive to this, but my hope is that we will get libraries and instruments written for MIDI Guitar that also does their part, in a near future. But you’ll get to try it yourself soon, and maybe you can report back to me how much of this you experience?

      Hi Giovanni! Of course you can use both MG2 and MG3, since both versions deliver MIDI OUT. But since you seem to be asking about the iOS version I can't say anything about the setup for MG3, since I haven't tried it on iPad yet. (there is no test version for iOS yet). And of course you need some sort of USB hub if you are going to connect both an audio interface and Maschine+ to it. It seemed to come with some wireless connection possibility though? Is it Bluetooth? It depends so much on how you are thinking of using this? Is it merely a MIDI trigger? Or are you using the AUDIO Line IN/OUT too? of course you'll need a way to get into the iPad (an AUDIO interface). But you need that anyway to be able to play your guitar with MG2/3, right?

      I have never really recommended that. I have said that, for anyone who want (need) the per-string assignment, it could still be of interest to consider a hex PU together with MG3. But when it comes to just the tracking, there are no such gains to be had. MG3 is fast enough. I have also said, of course, that the Hex PU /GP10 combo has given me the best tracking I could have with MG2. But everything is different now, with MPE and all. If you have no special reasons for why you think you need a hexPU I wouldn't recommend it whatsoever. The interface and cables are clumsy and the signal in itself isn't really all that! So no, is the short answer: 😀

      Well, first I have no idea what you mean with ”active sustainer”, and secondly MG3 has polyphonic tracking but it doesn’t allow for hexaphonic 6 channel audio input (at this point) That is correct!

      @@lofileif You haven't idea... Really?
      for example signal 4th string through 1st hexPU (4ch only) +filter+VCA send to 2nd hexPU(4ch only) like a feedBack and reActuate 4th string (you self talk about this sustainer at 2:00 - what's name your kit?)
      PS: oh yeat, MG's polyphonic tracking detect note, but can't detect string number
      PPS: MG3 support splits of fretBoard zones?

      @lofileif  4 місяці тому

      Double HexPU.s for sustaining purposes? I don't think I 've seen anything like that other than the system on the Moog Guitar. I use the original SUSTAINIAC electromagnetic type sustainers on all of my guitars. I believe there are some modular system (CYCFI) that might have additional functions, but I have never tried those.
      No fretboard zones in MG3 (yet).

      SUSTAINIAC support sustain chords? or melody only?

      It sustains whatever notes/chords you hold, but it is not particularly suitable for MIDI purposes because of the relative focus on overtones and harmonic blend.

      @@lofileif do you hapen to own any acoustic guitars from Acousticsamples? GD6 or Sunbird? They are a bit old but I think sound amazing...would love to see them in action with MG3. Or Acou6itc from vir2 that one also sounds nice...Here are some more that I like. Perhaps you own some of them and can showcase them: Impact Soundworks guitars, Nylon Sky by Spectrasonics, and Musical Sampling nylon rustique and hoard picked, Sketch Samples guitars, Orange tree samples guitars, Amplesound guitars, Pianoteq... And of course also the JB145 and new MG acoustic...would love to see them showcased separate. Love the channel!

      @jurecehovin4039 Hey, thanks! Most of those I don’t have, of course. And another problem is that many of the guitars written with keyboard in mind have a pretty lousy dynamics profile (for MIDI Guitar) , and also a built in response latency (for some reason). There is just a few select instruments that works great without any kind of fix or workaround. I guess I’ll have to get back to this…
