It's easy criticize this song and the rest of St. Anger as being the trash that many believe it to be, but I think it's more interesting to try and imagine what it's like to have this kind of music inside you. Not only that, but to be in a position where you have to have the confidence and willpower to support these songs in the face of impending backlash, knowing that fans could hate it no matter how honest and brutal and necessary the songs felt when you wrote them. St. Anger is nothing if not a fascinating glimpse into a different perspective.
TheAstoundingJake Damn straight, dude. I remember a lot of the problems with this album was the hype that surrounded it. I remember a promo video before the album came out, with a snippet of the intro to the track St. Anger, the guitars were heavy as shit and the double bass drums were the most manic we had heard from them in years. I remember my buddy sitting beside saying "that's borderline death metal right there!" We also got the infamous quote from Lars saying it was "complex like Justice" and Kirk comparing it to bands like Meshuggah. We know how that panned out lol. You were also seeing Metallica being vulnerable human beings, sharing their feelings with Mr. Cosby Sweater. Before that, it was always the "kick fucking ass, take no shit attitude". A major departure. St. Anger is my least favorite Metallica record, but I don't despise it like many do. I understand it for what it is. They needed to release it. The emotion behind it was genuine, and the ideas were well-intentioned. Just not always well executed. And the lack of Kirk's solos. I have always loved Metallica's longer tracks, but a lot of these were overlong and repetitive. Especially lyrically. If you have an 8 minute song, don't sing the same thing over and over again. Structurally, some of it was a mess, but, aye, I guess that's part of the charm. This album plays more like a demo than an actual record. But I tell you what, I've given this record a couple spins for the first time in about 10 years, so I had some fresh ears. It was so easy to hate that easy to look past it's strengths. There are some monster riffs on littered throughout here (such as the intro to this video), and Lars plays his fucking ass off. He never gets respect (heh) because of the sound, he's not the greatest drummer, and the fact that he is Lars. But he's playing like as if it was his last time playing with Metallica. Because it almost was. There almost wasn't a Metallica before this album was made. I'm glad we got this subpart album, the cringe documentary, the collaboration with Grandpa Simpson, all of that.
I would say the same thing of the Transformers films. Hear me out. Critical consensus tells us those movies are garbage and nobody likes them, yet every new one makes more money than the last (and two of them made over one billion dollars each). The fact of the matter is that even critically despised art can be tremendously successful with the right kind of hype behind it. For Transformers, it's the over-the-top spectacle and iconic, decades-old characters (not to mention the toys they inspire); it's a media empire appealing to fans, not critics. For St. Anger, it was going to sell like crazy because it was Metallica, plain and simple. It also helped that there was an insane amount of drama and speculation about the band and the album at the time. Things were changing and no one knew what would become of the world's biggest rock band, so everybody bought the album expecting it to be the latest, greatest, most surprising Metallica record yet. And yeah, it was surprising. So, of course it was a tremendous sales success; the fans forking over their cash hadn't actually heard the thing yet. Then everyone heard it and, as you well know, more than a few people were disappointed.
St. Anger may be the last Metallica album where they actually pushed themselves to new boundaries, love it or hate it. Death Magnetic and Hardwired are good albums but they seem to be kind of redoing the past on those albums and seem comfortable not pushing themselves musically in creating truly new music. St. Anger was Metallica truly creating new music, like Load and Reload were them pushing their boundaries at that time. Doing "Black Album 2" would have been easy but they chose to push themselves, which I love about them. If anything, I miss the creativity over the years. IMO it is what makes them so great for so long. I really like Death Magnetic and Hardwired but they definitely are not pushing themselves creatively with those albums. "If" they do another new album, I truly hope they go all out and push their music minds to another level. IMO no need to rehash the past when you have such great minds like Hetfield, Hammett and Ulrich.
Maybe people heard the albums in the wrong order, Try this: Instead divided the albums by chronological order, or "pre-Black album and post-Black album" , we should listen Metallica's albums in the machete order: 1. Black Album. 2, Master Of Puppets 3. ReLoad 4. Kill 'Em All 5. Load 6. ...And Justice for All 7. St. Anger 8. Death Magnetic 9. Ride the Lightning 10. Hardwired... to Self-Destruct
@@saraaparicio7538 they at least have to make three more albums before they retire. Even James said they'll stick around for at least 10 more years. I really hope to see another revolutionary album that will change metal forever, just like AJFA or Black album did
I honestly love this album, people seem to hate on it just because it's different. I understand why the snare isn't liked by everyone but a "normal" snare sound just wouldn't work
You know, when this came out, I thought these guys are all washed up. Gotta admit, the album and the video aged really well :) Love the new one as well.

I feel like a lot of us when this came out (30s) can appreciate this more now that time has gone and Metallica has went back to their roots. I mean, all the old school fans(my father included) single out Load, Reload, & St. Anger and Metallica low point but I don't. I look at Load & Reload as "from the hearts" of Lars & Kirk while St. Anger is experimental... taking a risk on doing something never done before. I like the St. Anger for what it is! It's literally the only album of it's kind! It's genuine! It's unique! Its original! No matter how much people hate on St. Anger it will always be a masterpiece of it's own I'm my eyes and hopefully in the eyes of true Metallica fans!
Y'all are missing the Brilliance of this album! It has a different and unique sound. It's like Presence by Led Zeppelin.. All the mainstream fans don't understand it but musicians and real music lovers dig it. Led Zeppelin never followed a formula...and with this album, Metallica doesn't either except that they did and kinda have ever since the Black album which is why this album is so brilliant. Its different sounding and raw.my favorite by them ever!
This album is just sounding like the rock music at the time, it's called a trend, why are people nowadays not giving this song enough respect, it's quite a good album if you think about it
this song has been really cathartic for me (someone with an anxiety problem) over the years. this album in general is so raw and unpolished and perfectly nails what its like to be anxious/angry or depressed. I dont care what everyone thinks about St.Anger, its a great album for people like me.
Love it or hate it...St. Anger was and still is one of the most unique sounding metal albums ever made. I’ve always championed this album as one of the most innovative Metallica have ever produced. Death Magnetic and Hardwired are great albums but played it safe. This was raw, visceral. Like a raw nerve. Very similar in fact to ...And Justice For All. The band were in pain from losing Cliff and they produced probably the most ambitious albums of their career. To this day Justice still causes division in the fans over Jason’s bass lines or lack thereof! In a similar light St. Anger was made at a time that Metallica almost ended due to addictions, arguments, Jason’s departure and demons from the past. It pushed them to make something truly unique. I’m just forever grateful they didn’t split and continue rocking to this day 🤘🏻
there's something about this album though. i come back to it a lot. it's this supremely talented band that has completely lost it's fucking mind, doesn't give a shit anymore. hetfield sounds totally fucked on this album, makes me uncomfortable, like he's gonna kill everybody
i love everything about St Anger. The Snare, the Guitars and everything. this is really fresh. This is what they supposed to do during that time of period (rehab, therapy etc).. i dont understand people who says they a big fan of Metallica but didn't understand them. Everything's sound/happens for a reasons.
Great album. They just know how to write. Still to date. Death Magnetic ,hardwired self-destruct..I have been lucky enough to see them 18-times and counting. They have always been there for me...when life is not. My fav album is M.O.P. but I like everything they make...true icons very hard to duplicate or beat... Metallica Through time they will march on!!! Off to never-never land!!!

Honestly I was thinking this song sucks but at the same time it's so fucking great compared to most songs

Yes. Very well put, sir.
Risto tea
If ppl hated St. Anger that much, how was it certified double platinum and selling over 6 mil world wide!!
My favorite System of A Down album!
The Day that Metallica Made nu metal music 🤟😎❤
well said!)
Its some of the rawest music Metallica has done .Great album back to their roots highly under rated album
tried nuking raw sausage. it was fuckin' horrible. i'll never do that again.

Maybe people heard the albums in the wrong order, Try this: Instead divided the albums by chronological order, or "pre-Black album and post-Black album" , we should listen Metallica's albums in the machete order:
1. Black Album.
2, Master Of Puppets
3. ReLoad
4. Kill 'Em All
5. Load
6. ...And Justice for All
7. St. Anger
8. Death Magnetic
9. Ride the Lightning
10. Hardwired... to Self-Destruct
They are making another
St anger is okay it's better than the trash music we have nowadays but my favorite Metallica album is Ride The Lighting
@@saraaparicio7538 they at least have to make three more albums before they retire. Even James said they'll stick around for at least 10 more years. I really hope to see another revolutionary album that will change metal forever, just like AJFA or Black album did
new doesnt mean good.
The documentary of this album taught me that its ok to get help - although my traumas were different - it probably saved my life. Thank you Metallica.

Torrriate I like the sound of the snare 10000 times better than your shitty, unoriginal, unfunny joke
Fantastic tick tick tick tick tock
Indeed great album

that solo tho
that was the joke in his comment. Making me explain that to you hurts my soul more than Lars snare
Then go circlejerk on Master of Puppets some more.
It's super song to mma
Rafael Santos what a reply. that got me chuckle a lot

I'm sure I'm not the only one who likes this album as it is.
I honestly love this album, people seem to hate on it just because it's different. I understand why the snare isn't liked by everyone but a "normal" snare sound just wouldn't work
Wow! I love the solo in this!
You know, when this came out, I thought these guys are all washed up. Gotta admit, the album and the video aged really well :) Love the new one as well.
Fuck, the verse for this is so fuckin sick.
Fuckin just fuckin love the violent, crushing, aggression.
Love this song, not even taking the piss.
I love the album
+Del Taco James I enjoyed this album more than Load and Reload honestly
The guitar and drum parts in the verses are just perfect man 🤘🤘
⚡⚡the first time they tried something really new and the last time they sounded really good, imo ! this record is very highly underrated ! it has almost unlimited rage and yes, the drums underline that perfectly ! stroke of genius to me !!! ⚡⚡
this album is the best of Metallica. no matter what other people say. a new taste and boundary for Heavy metal genre
I can see why people thought the sound of this album was off, but in the context of these music videos, it seems perfect.
Dang, the early 2000s were dark.

One of best metalica song, show madness truly
best part of video 03:16 - 03:28
this song is kickass definetly one of their best songs . and great album
This is the last Metallica album to feature genuine raw rage from the early days.
Its different sounding and raw.my favorite by them ever!
dude I feel the same about this album
It's like the white album for the Beatles
This album is just sounding like the rock music at the time, it's called a trend, why are people nowadays not giving this song enough respect, it's quite a good album if you think about it
Yea, Led Zeppelin just plagiarized other musicians......
eh, I think the snare sound is good if they didn't make it so loud
this song has been really cathartic for me (someone with an anxiety problem) over the years. this album in general is so raw and unpolished and perfectly nails what its like to be anxious/angry or depressed. I dont care what everyone thinks about St.Anger, its a great album for people like me.
I really like the sound of this, it's dense and industrial.
I’m just forever grateful they didn’t split and continue rocking to this day 🤘🏻
This whole video just spits out early 2000's vibe
1:11 James's face is like 😏😏😏
Sorry no tortilla
Not a huge fan of this album but this song is pretty good.
Same
+Johnny Mallorf This one and St. Anger, but I agree about every other song
+Johnny Mallorf FUCK OFF
+Johnny Mallorf Shoot me Again is a favorite of mine with the two mentioned here
there's something about this album though. i come back to it a lot. it's this supremely talented band that has completely lost it's fucking mind, doesn't give a shit anymore. hetfield sounds totally fucked on this album, makes me uncomfortable, like he's gonna kill everybody
This album grew on me so much

My first time was August 2023! Will never forget it!
one of their best albums.... for me...

Personally this is the only song I enjoy on this album but it's cool to see that some people actually like it
its honestly my favorite album by them, it made me a fan.
Spice same here and I dont care if everyone of them doesn't like too
Ding dong
Your opinion is wrong
I love it
I wish the riff at the end was longer, sounds pretty amazing.
The album version is longer.
This song hit home for me… love, list and debauchery
THEY ARE THE BEST!!
I love that song
i love everything about St Anger.
James hetfeild: drinks like it’s his last day on the planet
James hetfeild now: Hopefully getting the help he needs in rehab
It's always been cocaine
Max Esparza nah, dude, James def has a coke problem
James never touched coke (NOT THE SODA) or Heroin. But Lars did Coke.
Yeah I wasn't crazy.
I really really really love this song back in the day and I'm here still loving it ❤ I never understood the critics here
Hetfield looks like a beast thou !
