The whole St Anger album is fucking badass, great headbanging music. Best part of the album is that it's not a traditional Metallica album that most fans/critic's expected, it aggressively hits you from the first track to the last.
i think this track is amazing. The "SET IT FREE!!!!" moment is one of the coolest raw wild blast of anger i ever heard on a record. It's pure noise metal for few seconds! They just nailed it 100% and just for that the record should be raised and appreciated the way it should be, with respect.

I agree. A lot of old school metalica fans complain about the loud snare but I think it was a good intention to get the message across about raw anger. The loud snare from Lars is actually one of the best things about the song because it does compliment the feeling of out of control impulses of rage. Don't why people are so bent out of shape over it. It's not like they did a complete flip like linkin park did, they changed it just enough so that they could still keep some of there essence. Plus, not every metal song needs to have guitar solo to be a great.

+izaaks100 I know - sure, I think some of their older stuff was better but people act like this album is death itself...It's a different sound, but this song and sweet amber are some of my favourite metallica songs...
the mixing on it just sounds off. It's too much. The first slipknot album had the same idea just executed much better, giving a raw sound but not sticking out so much in the mix
I don’t care about the snare sound. It doesn’t bother me. This entire album is really good in ny opinion. Hate me. However, a edit of this and any song off of St. Anger with a guitar solo would be cool. They already exist, but doesn’t matter if they’re there or not to me. It would be fun though.
I have to admit it was because of this album I started to get into Metallica. I had already listened to other songs but never looked in to them. So for me I am grateful to have this album, because now I have Metallica in my life. And what would I do without master of puppets.
It definitely is great. The snare doesn't bother at all on this song. Yes I would've liked a guitar solo on it; I think it could've really added to it's greatness. But yes still great nonetheless.
Why do people hate this? This song is making me, and many others, listen and get into their other stuff. It is allowing the band to grow and that can only be a good thing, if you were a true fan you would have their best intentions at heart, not your own. The anger, yearning and general heavy feeling just completes this song, the chorus and bass/drums mix just works so well. I hope they release more like this! +1
Achtung_Spitfire Because it's a mediocre track made shit by a poor mix and a snare tuning that not only sounds bad but also dominates the entire thing.
Achtung_Spitfire I don't like this song, big fucking deal. It's like if i don't like one of their songs i'm not a real fan and blah blah blah... Reminds me of myself 15 years ago... Hopefully you too will grow up
2023 and I still can't listen to this song without playing it ten times in a row. It stirs up so much emotion that needs to be dealt with. This album is as much therapy for us as it was for Metallica.
I think people lose sight of the snare's purpose in this album. The album is about anger and frustration, that snare makes you uncomfortable on purpose (like a comedian will make people uncomfortable before a punch line to make the laughter an escape thus amplifying the joke). They want you to get to a dark angry place with no sensibility and that snare is there to make the song sound more raw, it's there to antagonize you so you transport yourself to that place. And then the lyrics and riffs are the escape. It's an album that is meant to be heard while you jump around like a maniac screaming, not to be heard while you sit still and pick it apart. It's the musical equivalent of someone getting in your face until you explode in fury.
people are that stupid. They say they are fans of Metallica and do not understand a damn thing about their music. People wanted Metallica to thrash again after Load/Reload. That's what it is: pure thrash in its rawest expression. You cannot get much more aggressive than this.
Mario Dupuis i like st anger ( the song) and i dont doubt the thrashity ,lets say, of their songs and especially this one but for exampke frantic was a dissappointment from the part of performance or as a song.
a fucking masterpiece Metallica. my favorite song on the album. it's both melodic and heavy and it's perfect. don't care what others say about the st.anger album, the entire album is a masterpiece, especially this song
I'm almost sure they had a backup version of it without the pan. And it's a good thing it got lost forever. This album is one of those pieces of art where if you even dial something down 1% - it doesn't work anymore. Just perfection. Not joking.
Nothing explains St. Anger better than the documentary, 'Some Kind of Monster.' The film follows the band as it deals with the departure of Newsted, the addition of Rock on bass, the auditioning of new bassists, Hetfield going to rehab (and the other members dealing with this) and the overall, collaborative writing process in general. Basically, 'Some Kind of Monster' explains why 'St. Anger' is what 'St. Anger' is. Fans cannot simply listen to the album and fully understand what Metallica created. To gain that perspective, listen to the album, watch the documentary...and then listen to the album again. It will open your eyes and ears to things you didn't know existed on 'St. Anger.
To make it much shorter, cause the main problem with the Album is that, it is simply too long with its 78 minutes. After half an hour the album just gets very boring and repetitive. They should leave about a bunch of songs, or they should reduce the longness of the them back to 2-4 minutes. 28 minutes is a reference to Slayer's Reign in Blood. That was around 28 minutes and simply perfect in its concreteness.
When you get past the snare this song and the _whole album_ is great. Although it took a while, I seriously don't mind the snare anymore and love the whole album the same amount as every single other one.
As a Hip Hop head since the 80's, this is one of the illest songs and videos I've ever seen. After years of watching artists walk around on stage with 30 other people who do absolutely nothing, I've always amdired Metallica for listening to and appreciating their fans and their opinions on their music.
Prison guards: guys, metallica will play for you today Prisoners: cool *metallica arrives* Prisoners since 1981: where the fuck is Dave Mustaine and Ron McGowney
People always say Lars can't play double bass because of what he did with Dyer's Eve. However just look at 0:38. People ignore the drums in this song because the snare sounds weird, so they don't hear that part.
I think the snare gives it an even more angry and pissed off feeling. It fits perfectly with the album, but i wouldn't like that same snare on any other album.
They actually got to, Metallica performed an entire set while they were there for the inmates, it was actually technically Rob's first show. I think they actually performed a couple of sets for different sets of inmates.
The snare drum might've been more tolerable if it didn't sound like a trash can lid. They could've used the snare from The Black Album, Load, and Reload and it would've been a lot better!
Because people are static. They don't like change. Just look at Hollywood today. Everything that sells is something old and familiar. This is a very abrasive, angry album, even heavier than their 80s works, and if your life is going too well, you're just not going to get it.
At the time I was sorely disappointed with this album, not lying there. But it has gotten so much better with age and I am truly enjoying this album more than ever these days. I just can't enough of the raw sound.

+izaaks100 I know - sure, I think some of their older stuff was better but people act like this album is death itself...It's a different sound, but this song and sweet amber are some of my favourite metallica songs...
+izaaks100 Imo, the best album from metallica with ride the lighting !
I don't have much of a problem with the snare itself. It's just that they made it louder than everything else, even James' vocals.
i dont get how can people call it "trash can" it's just alot of plate and spring reverb. every metal drum has it, just there we have much more of it
the mixing on it just sounds off. It's too much. The first slipknot album had the same idea just executed much better, giving a raw sound but not sticking out so much in the mix
I don't understand what was the problem with this entire album. I love it .
Congrats nube.

17 years have passed. This song still gets hated and it still kicks ass.
The song isn't hated, the album is.
Still sucks.

💀💀💀😭😭😭😭
I love this song, no matter what many people say about the drums and the lack of solos. It is Just great the way it is.
But how can you actually hear anything through the drums? Guitars could be playing mary had a little lamb and no one would be any the wiser
It definitely is great. The snare doesn't bother at all on this song. Yes I would've liked a guitar solo on it; I think it could've really added to it's greatness. But yes still great nonetheless.
Drums are too loud imo, other than that i like it
CLANG!
I like the riffs and vocals but the drums are way too awful and loud and it is too long to not have a solo.
its amazing what fans do to see their favorite band live.
I feel like this album is really underrated. I love it.
Arianna Palacios You should listen to the first two albums, for me they are the best
Daniel Castillo of course I have
This and battery are my two favorite songs by Metallica
The face of the guy at 2:45 expresses exactly how to feel about this song.
lol
😂😂
I got a big surprise with the news of James's rehabilitation.
As a entire life Metallica's fan, I say: Be strong, Papa Het
Why do people hate this?
This song is making me, and many others, listen and get into their other stuff. It is allowing the band to grow and that can only be a good thing, if you were a true fan you would have their best intentions at heart, not your own.
The anger, yearning and general heavy feeling just completes this song, the chorus and bass/drums mix just works so well. I hope they release more like this!
+1

Achtung_Spitfire It's because of the poorly mixed snare sound that was in all of the songs in th St. Anger. A can lid sounds better than it tbh.
Achtung_Spitfire Because it's a mediocre track made shit by a poor mix and a snare tuning that not only sounds bad but also dominates the entire thing.
Matgunman
Until you pointed out the snare I didn't really notice it.
Thanks for helping me understand.
Achtung_Spitfire I don't like this song, big fucking deal. It's like if i don't like one of their songs i'm not a real fan and blah blah blah... Reminds me of myself 15 years ago... Hopefully you too will grow up
My friend in my and soul. Gary Parent may he rest in peace...I love you 💞
2023 and I still can't listen to this song without playing it ten times in a row. It stirs up so much emotion that needs to be dealt with. This album is as much therapy for us as it was for Metallica.
Reasons to like the snare:
- it's fucking art;
- my feelings are oversnare.
+AlienToStudy sounds better than your shitty band I'm sure...lol
ROCKA ROLLA whose band?
AlienToStudy sorry...no offense. I'm used to people insulting Metallica..I get offended very easily where they are concerned...
ROCKA ROLLA it's ok
no sarcasm when I say this album is actual art
AlienToStudy ty sweety:)
i don't know what people think about this song .. but to me it sounds awesome ..
Dam right it's awesome, nearly as awesome as your pic.

This is such a System Of A Down influenced song. I can totally hear these guys playing and Serj singing it while listening to it!
you are 100% correct
Yeah. Slow and Hard at the same time with very downtuned guitars.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘👐🏻
I agree, I hear SOAD here
its a nu-metal influenced song all the way. slipknot, SOAD, Limp Bizkit, you can hear em all in this song. lol
My favorite thing about metallica is James' voice, it's the best I've heard in metal
A song about anger that when I hear cools me down. All hail St. Anger!
You may like this or not, but this is the most badass video ever made
Am i the only to love St anger in it’s totality ?
Nope. I don't get the hate. It's not the black album, but it rocks.
No, it's honestly one of my favorite metallica albums
No it hits a special spot for me too even though I agree with others that it's below the bands level. It just has something
It's on my top 3 Metallica albums.
No ☻
dont care what anyone says, st anger was a bomb of an album. thanks boys.
Exactly. The psychology behind this album is just pure brilliance.
Mario Dupuis i like st anger ( the song) and i dont doubt the thrashity ,lets say, of their songs and especially this one but for exampke frantic was a dissappointment from the part of performance or as a song.
Always makes me want to break something lol. But not as much as Pantera's WALK.
Or! It just sounds like complete shit.
a fucking masterpiece Metallica. my favorite song on the album. it's both melodic and heavy and it's perfect. don't care what others say about the st.anger album, the entire album is a masterpiece, especially this song
Alec Foster thats the attitude!
I agree this song fucking rocks. The album is my least favorite of MetallicA but still fuckin rocks.
This song is trash,u fkm
I literally stopped listening to Metallica for 10 years because of this album. This album is so poor
thank you, it really is a diamond in the rough...
Who else here loves literally every single Metallica album? I'm obsessed with Load, Reload, and St. Anger as well.
This comment aged like milk
I'm old enough to remember when they were good. So... No.
I'm almost sure they had a backup version of it without the pan.
And it's a good thing it got lost forever.
This album is one of those pieces of art where if you even dial something down 1% - it doesn't work anymore. Just perfection. Not joking.
I love Kirk's guitar solo in this song. He didn't use a wah pedal this time, and the results were amazing.
Lmao
ha
Lmao
every solo on the album is unbelievable
There's no solos in the st anger dumbass
I like the snare drum :)

Anger.
This song has aged extremely well! Sounds better as time goes on
I remember it was 2003...20 years ago! And I heard it for the first time. Fallen in love! Metallica are an evergreen, timeless, phenomenal band.
Fun fact: Slipknot uses Lar’s St. Anger snare for the song Duality
It's the sound of these beer things clown and chris used
Its just a beer keg😂
:O i 'll check it out, i'm sorry for my english :V
Normie
on the whole Vol. 3 album you mean XD
Обожаю! Нельзя передать словами как я люблю эту группу! Моё детство, моя юность, вся моя жизнь, без этой группы - ничто!
They should make a 28 minutes long version of the whole St. Anger album, and it would be most kickass material in the last 20 years.
I heard, it isquite good, and I had posted the above mentioned 1 month before Hardwired to Self-destrust was released.
My happy years as a teenager.....Metallica's music was always there.
20 years old this Album is Bloody hell where time gone
Even considering the bad snare, this is the best song on the album
u saved me time from listening to more than this track lol
best intro to a music video EVER! and if you don't like the so called "newer Metallica" GFY!!! Metallica is the GOAT!

When you get past the snare this song and the _whole album_ is great.
Although it took a while, I seriously don't mind the snare anymore and love the whole album the same amount as every single other one.
Metallica será una gran banda, y esperemos que siempre siga produciendo grandes éxitos
Pues éxitos siempre tendrá pues no se le exige mucho, una gran canción creo que ya no, ya se les acabo la inspiración
That snare is absolutely amazing.
As a Hip Hop head since the 80's, this is one of the illest songs and videos I've ever seen. After years of watching artists walk around on stage with 30 other people who do absolutely nothing, I've always amdired Metallica for listening to and appreciating their fans and their opinions on their music.
as a Metallica fan since 1986...they still kick ass...
When you finally get entertainment.... And it's Lars and this snare.
Tbh i would just cover my ears and watch lars play
@@lunahetfield He does play for the audience.

It’s Ron McGovney.
James was 39 yrs old when this came out im 39 now and i understand this whole fucking album now. Metallica 4 life
People always say Lars can't play double bass because of what he did with Dyer's Eve. However just look at 0:38. People ignore the drums in this song because the snare sounds weird, so they don't hear that part.
Tocando dentro de una prisión, qué admirables!!! Metallica son los mejores, realmente son únicos!!!

Si no me equivoco en esa prisión se encontraba richard ramirez
I think the snare gives it an even more angry and pissed off feeling. It fits perfectly with the album, but i wouldn't like that same snare on any other album.
Lol imagine it on and justice for all
Nõustun sinuga 100%.
I agree, it emphasizes the anger and constant noise and tension in prison and in the lives of the people depicted in the video
I actually like the song but to me the snare ruins it lol
that's what I've been saying
Maturing is realizing that this song actually goes hard as FUCK. October 2024, anyone?
Looking out for anyone brave enough to say so. Raw energy, unfiltered, just pure straight aggression.
99.999% of that crowd just wanted to hear Master of Puppets
They actually got to, Metallica performed an entire set while they were there for the inmates, it was actually technically Rob's first show. I think they actually performed a couple of sets for different sets of inmates.
This is their punishment

I actually really like the St Anger album, I think it sounds really raw and primal.
Me too
I thinks alot of people hate it because it's not trve thrash like they usually do. either way I think it's a badass song.
Industrial
this is one the few metallica albums that used drop tuning, so it has groovier sound than usual.
Brindle Chihuahua me too
Bob Rock: “How much snare drum do you want?”
Lars: “All of it”
This made me LOL.
It is pretty crazy they laid out the first test tracks and didn't have someone say "I think it's a bit much guys"
The snare drum might've been more tolerable if it didn't sound like a trash can lid. They could've used the snare from The Black Album, Load, and Reload and it would've been a lot better!
actually its missing the actual part that gives it the "snare" name LOL
I think you mean. None of it
You ain’t kidding
This is my favourite Metallica song, it’s so raw and intense!
I don’t know, why people don’t like this album. I like that. This drums, this vibe.. That’s so good!
you goddamn right
Was thinking the same lol
The snare hits different
love that snare, it pierce my soul like whole album
Because people are static. They don't like change. Just look at Hollywood today. Everything that sells is something old and familiar. This is a very abrasive, angry album, even heavier than their 80s works, and if your life is going too well, you're just not going to get it.
0:30 Layne Staley on drums.
Arcade Domination that's funny because Layne started on drums
At the time I was sorely disappointed with this album, not lying there. But it has gotten so much better with age and I am truly enjoying this album more than ever these days.
I just can't enough of the raw sound.
Yes! I agree frantic and this song used to be my least favorite song now they are almost my favs
Am i the only one who thinks that st anger is the best song from metallica?
yes

Too bad metallica didn't do this in the 80s, imagine a drunk james hetfield with a room full of dangerous criminals

Estoy de acuerdo con Jesus Garcia, a pesar de ser fan de Metallica. No existe una comparacion tampoco, Jason era increible, gran presencia; y Robert (a pesar de no gustarme su estilo en escena) es un bajista fantastico.
