I got a 3018 and working on MDF I knew I needed dust collector. A $3 cyclone shaped spray bottle, coffee jar and old house vac and dollar store flex hoses worked really well. So going small business without spend lots of money is something that resonates. Which is why your ch is getting binged watched.
Nice improvements. I bought same Rigid vac recently for my table saw and all I was begging you while watching - "Pls, don't cut off it's handle!". And you've heard me! LOL
I've been watching your CNC videos over the last 2 weeks and really like them. I went ahead and purchased a Shapeoko XXL Pro today thanks to you. You really sealed the deal on how great the Pro version is.
I've had the remote controllers for about a year and a half and they're great! I was skeptical at first, but they have held up long term running higher amperage equipment (15A). Well worth the small price IMO... keeping track of the remote is a little trickier though. LOL
Well done, Sam. Glad to see you upgraded the vacuum. The old one was definitely the weakest link in the whole system. For the bucket seal, I was thinking of some foam/insulating material on the underside of the hatch. Make a ring of it to mate up with the bucket. If you ever replace the bucket, you'll still have the seal in place.
Sam.... mounting your cyclone separator to a gamma-seal bucket lid might give you a completely air tight seal plus allow you to detach said bucket quickly for emptying.
I chuckled when your old shop vac made that wind down noise. I have one that does the same. Sounds like a sick goose. lol Good solutions to your dust collection woes.
I agree with the weather stripping for the bucket. however, to further reduce noise it seems padding under the vacuum on the floor would reduce the vibration chamber noise and consider air gap between foam layers on the side to break up sound more. Would probably drop at least 15 decible more.
i like the "toilet" style dust collector big thing i think is you don't have to "POP" the lid off all the time i think i am going to make something similar but maybe lower down so i don't have to lift the bucket of dust up over a lip just slide it out . don't see many that way would be great on the big systems --30 gal barrel maybe??? keep up the innovations
I built a DC system several years ago a big one using a 2 hp 12 inch impeller and a supper dust deputy and a Wynn environmental filter, I used two toggle clamps from Home Depot $8:00 each to raise and lower the platform that the dust bucket sits on, for a seal I used an automotive trunk seal glued on the the lip of the bucket with contact cement. It works great! 😁🛫 What is the DB reading now with the new vac in the box?
Great idea with your DC system! I took a reading off camera and it's still right at 40 dB with the hose lying "open". When the hose is connected to the CNC dust collector mount it's much louder due to wind noise. But that be negated when I build my enclosure (I hope). :)
The baffle on the bottom handles most of the exhaust from an airflow standpoint. However I just finished my 3rd "edit" to this system yesterday and added an intake/vent baffle. That video should be up soon. Thanks!
I walked into HD last week and right up front was a Ridgid shop vac on sale for like $59. I remembered part 1 of this series and thought "that's a good price" and brought it home. I pulled it out of the box and it was like a 1000 gallon capacity (not really but close). It's loud too, but hey it works. Edit: Can't remember why this is relevant :/
Nice I'm trying to figure out dust collection in my shop also. Thinking about a system where I put the vacuum outside or something less aggravating. But anyways been looking at the cnc4newbie machine instead of a shapeoko or onefinity now. It seems well built and uses standard code instead of grrbl which I like alot since I plan on converting my mill. Good luck and thanks for content
Sam, in this case I say your dust collection system really sucks. But in this case that's what it is supposed to do. Once again job well done. Two thumbs up coming at ya.
Hi Sam just wondering why you used pipe going from the box to the cyclone, instead of the normal floppy stretch pipe? wouldn't that then make it easier to open the hatch, plus the only high thing on the box would be the cyclone. You prob gave the answer in part 1 but i can't be bothered to go back and check ha ha ha. Hope you and your family have a great Christmas, Stay Safe, Barry (ENG)
I have a similar system, but my vacuum is in another shed and piped underground to the shop. I cut my long cord also and it made my vacuum run a little better also. My vacuum sits alone with no cabinet, but in the hot summertime, it gets pretty warm. You might check yours once and a while to see if it's getting too hot. Like your videos!
Yea what Ken sayd, when cables is coiled like this, they have a hard time getting rid of heat when power goes throu, and can eventually melt and "burn down the world" as you sayd Sam. I saw you did the same with your CnC machine, and it is a hazard having cables coiled up, but "Usually" it works out fine untill one day it dosnt. Please uncoil the wires, it will be safer. 😊
@@Samcraftcom Coiled cable induces increased heat. A fire hazard that gets worse every use. You have not only normal heat from current flow, but the coil generates electromagnetic field and hysteresis heat. I got careless once and ruined a coiled 50 foot of extension and came close to arcing across. Be super careful about it.
💓SAM CAN YOU PLEASE💓Make a surprise sign for the soap shack💓I have watched some shite adverts & will continue doing so💓I’d be grateful if you could do this as I’m in a Uk 🇬🇧 lockdown so cannot get out to make one💓

Awesome!!! HUGE congrats too!!!!
Much better set up!! The remote control was a nice touch. 👍

Nice vac Sam! I’m glad you got something new for Christmas. Great choice.
Love that you follow up on projects and update or fix. Merry Christmas to you and the family.
Thanks, you too!
Thanks for the update.
You bet! :)

My little shop vac makes the same sound as yours did when I shut if off. The sound of impending doom...lol.
Awesome job thanks for sharing
I'd have liked to see it working and see how effective the upgrade is.

Good work! A vent for the vacuum exhaust port might help to increase the overall effectiveness.

How hot does the vac get inside the box after long working time?

You could always be crazy and cut it in half? LOL
What you use for exhaust you laser engraving fumes? Do you have an solution for that too? I smoke all my neighbourhood, when i do lasercutting.😅

That was very cleaver idea. my wet/dry vac will always be called shop vac. some habits not worth trouble changing. I have enough to remember. LOL
Sam, in this case I say your dust collection system really sucks. But in this case that's what it is supposed to do. Once again job well done. Two thumbs up coming at ya.
Love it!!! I fought hard to not use that line in my video. Glad someone did!!! LOL
You didn't find it necessary to install a air exit on the collection bucket?
Hi Sam just wondering why you used pipe going from the box to the cyclone, instead of the normal floppy stretch pipe? wouldn't that then make it easier to open the hatch, plus the only high thing on the box would be the cyclone.

Get the harbor freight dust collector
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So ... Frankenstein becomes "Frankie Baby" ... huh? Oh the drama!!!
I don't know how powerful that vac is but the cable may get too hot over time if you don't uncoil it

I'm working on designing one for her, no worries. :)
Your sound meter app can't be accurate, because at 8ft that screaming banshee is still above 68-74 decibels, and more like 76-84 at the source.
Your camera seems to be out of focus?
