4-5 hours in, Rise of the Ronin feels like Team Ninja attempting to ape better games, rather than deliver something unique that plays to Team Ninja's strengths. I'm hopeful that my opinion will change, but so far Rise of the Ronin isn't hitting quite like I had hoped it would.

That horse galloping animation is certainly a choice that was made.
Just to play devils advocate, cos I’m not all that interested in this one but I do want to point it out, Ghosts open world activities were:
-clear bandit and mongol camps
- jump and climbing puzzles
- following the foxes
- quick time chopping bamboo puzzles
There was also all the side quests and the gear quests, which were all reasonably interesting imo.
My point is just that Ghost had all the same trappings but the distinguishing features were the limited UI, presentation and the effort put into some of the side quests. I love the game but it’s still mostly a traditional open world game.
I’d also suggest that the distaste for some of the more generic open world features is more a hardcore gamer thing, casual gamers (who like it or not make up a far bigger slice of the market) don’t really care about that and still enjoy it. Not saying it’s not played out and needs innovation, just that you’re rarely going to see it at this level

Yea. I like Ghost of Tsushima but people were acting like the open world was something groundbreaking. I still think RDR2 has the best open world in terms of things to do and interactivity/immersion.
@@SolidSnake240 yes and even that open world could be critically broken down. You could say that they're commitment to everything having realism, for example with animations always playing when you pick flowers or open cabinets, it might hinder the actual gameplay but will increase immersion. With RDR2, I found it great because it was consistent but if another game made picking stuff up need a laborious animation Everytime? It would lose points since it can't match the attention to detail RDR2 had. I also think it was lacking in odd character missions. The strange man from RDR1 was phenomenal. It definitely has an incredibly organic way of introducing you to content and the secrets or places that Arthur draws all had a very well thought out mystery to them.
One location was lifted exactly from an old western. I forget what it's called but it has this big homestead at the start. The villains operate out of this fancy train car. It's near Plainview in New Austin. Just a big ol house, nothing to do there but it's straight from that movie.

I regret watching this video. It almost convinced me not to get the game, but after watching some streamers saying it’s great, I gave it a shot and am really glad I did. This game is the most fun I’ve had in a while (just quit playing dragons dogma 2 in favor of this). It’s addictive, combat is great, there’s a ton of variety. The highlight is the setting and story which is an interesting location /time period I’ve not seen yet explored in any other game. Ralph needs to go back actually play the full game and see what he’s missing out on - it’s a cult classic in the making.
This was always gonna be a tough road with Dragons Dogma 2 releasing on the same day.

Team Ninja's environments always looked at least a console generation behind. While the fighting mechanics were always great, everything else was half-baked.

@@DuckyPatoz Nah, Nioh 2's combat is the absolute best combat of any action game. Not even an exaggeration. Nothing comes close to it. Having 3 stances, ~14 weapons, magic, ninjutsu, and whole trees for all of these gives the most variety of any action game you can think of

They always have reused assets from their old game and implement it to their new game, not really a complain but it helps lower the budget

This game definitely doesn't' have bad graphics. The immense amount of details are visible. I THINK IT'S THE LIGHTING, I THINK THE MATERIALS ARE NOT ACCURATE PBR MATERIALS, which enables accurate light interactions.
Believe it or not, after details, light is what makes these games feel next gen
It certainly helps. There is a reason raytracing was such a big focus early in this generation. It's still around, but doesn't get as much attention now since we are still at a point where it ends up being a choice between getting those effects and framerates.

lighting artists do choose color and temperature of the source lights and do have hand in color grading as well. How ever, the desaturated environment you mentioned, could be the choice of shader/texture artists as well. we will never know I guess

Personally I'm absolutely loving my time with it. I've had to put Dogma 2 on a backburner because of it. Please consider giving it another shot and review it! The game constantly throws new things at you, and is deceptively huge.

it feels like the specials after already doing some damage doesn't kill even the more basic enemy, put a katana inside the ribcage and he is still alive.
And how much action or hack n' slash games that fights humans you've seen doesn't work the exact same? In Sekiro for example, some human enemies you fight requires you to thrust the katana on their necks or chests for 3 times before they finally dies.

There's a clip of a big war scene that takes place later in the game. In it, you see the player do a fun looking combo mixing in swordplay, martial arts, and firearms. I think that and some of the other big battle scenes they've showed off in trailer footage give me hope for the complexity opening up over time.
This comment gives me a lot of hope, I feel like Nioh 2 and Wo-Long started off quite rough also but get better as you progress.
@@mitchh5596 Yeah, pretty much. If you haven't I recommend watching the Behind the Scenes videos for this game. You catch some glimpses of what the game is like past the first few hours, and it does seem like there's so much more than the parry and strike gameplay we've been seeing.
The "combo" in those gameplay reels is just attacking, stopping and dodging backwards, manually aiming your ranged weapon at an enemy, and then dashing back in to attack. It isn't a combo at all.

I’m not hating, I love ghost of Tsushima, but what interesting open world there is in it? It is only clearing up camps with same ubisoft formula which exist in ROR too?
Art style
The world is alive, you have lot of exploration, its vast, and the art style is beautiful. How your charavter interact with the herbs, the wind making your bandana and cape flow, everything is homogeneous.
You cant say that about this game.
Tsuahima was bloated and repetitive for sure.
Ghost of Tsushima is the best feudal Japan game for sure. Rise of the Ronin is not even close.
@@fastforward9066 except Ronin is not out, so you can't make an objective argument about it, while GoT is already known to be a shallow open world game. Combat in GoT is okay, but Team Ninja has far more experience in making excellent combat systems, so in this aspect RoR will most likely be better.
So to sum it up, you mostly get what you expect outta this. A little bit of Ass Creed, a little bit of Ghost of Tsushima, and a dumbed down version of Team Ninja's iconic combat... Still seems like something I'll get regardless since I can't help myself when it comes to feudal Japan based games, but it's well summarized here.

like some games I've worked on, it shows from your comments that it seems most of the focus is on the combat experience and Open World experience seems to be a second priority and those teams probably did the best they could with the resources they had. I do hope the basics are good enough so they can improve the fun in the open world during post-launch. (In comparison to Wo Long who has good stuff but is very mid on many other aspects)
In any case, I'm looking forward to it even though my expectations are lower than I anticipated.
Weirdly, I've never been expecting this to be in line with their other games. Honestly, what first came to mind ever since I saw that initial preview was a different IP in general.

I searched the entire comments to see if it was just me, but glad someone else noticed. That constant popping and crackling. I use a monitor for my PC sound (when not gaming) and so know it aint my sound setup. Definitely problems there. Its just all over the place, but was fine previously in the video.
Was never really too keen on this from the reveal trailer, but I was still holding some hope for it. Never played a Team Ninja game before in my life, but if I was going to play one, I figured this might be it. Even with this being provided footage (which I would assume means Team Ninja/Sony want put their best foot forward in showing what they have), I am not impressed whatsoever. So many animations look super clunky (specifically, I don't think Team Ninja understands horses ..... that horse animation is so distracting lol) and the world just feels empty.

I'm basing my comment off of Ralph's impressions (which I often share) and other videos, trailers, reviews I've seen/read. It's not like I'm making my decision based off a single impression video, that'd be idiotic. My conclusion comes from the fact that no previous Team Ninja game has ever interested me, AND Ralph's impression PLUS other trailers, reviews, and gameplay videos I've seen have not impressed me. So, I'm obviously not going to throw money at a game that I don't think I'm going to enjoy. Seems like a pretty logical conclusion to me friend.
You obviously have been a Team Ninja fan or have at least played some previous games of theirs. All the more power to you. I hope the game does well and that you enjoy it. It just has not impressed me personally based on how much I have been following it since its announcement.

They are very different games, to be honest. Do you like Samurais or medieval band diverse fantasy? Do you like Open world with markers or completely without? Etc etc. both look very good, so far, even with skill up’s dislike or Ronin.

It's the graphics for me. For an exclusive game Team Ninja did a pissy poor job on this . How can a four year old game on PS4 (Ghost of Tsushima) look better graphically than this? a so called PS5 game.
I understand that in gaming gameplay comes first but at this point there is a level of graphical quality that PS5/Series X games should at least meet. Especially if it is an exclusive title.

The answer to your question is simple. The engine that TN uses is dated, and they aren't good at level design or art style. They've proven this over and over again.

Been trying to make a decision on Rise of the Ronin or Dragon's Dogma 2, since they are both coming out the same day. This was very useful in making that decision.
Nioh 2 is one of my favorite games ever. Wo Long felt so unsatisfying in comparison. I'm sad this seems to be even more 'streamlined.'
Only thing that improved from Wo Long is the character creation.
@@inukaiversus My biggest disappointments with Wo Long were that the ki system they had invalidated like 90% of the options you had. Magic or weapon specials were all just worse than stocking up a ton of ki or whatever that balance bar was with regular attacks and then hitting Triangle. I'm worried when they simplify systems because it seems like that might happen again. Lots of flashy option that all feel worse than just pressing one button over and over.
Dragon Dogma
I followed DD for a long time, and waited for it, so I was always gonna jump on it regardless. However, I really hoped Rise of the Ronin would be awesome. It's such a shame... If somehow Dragon's Dogma 2 will burn as well, I'll be heartbroken :(
Looks awesome. Haven't seen many open world games with such a unique combat style. Choosing between this and Dragons Dogma day one will be tough. But leaning more towards ROTR atm.
I think the real kicker of this preview for me, as somebody interested in trying this as my first Team Ninja game is simply that based on the footage provides it looks like Ghost of Tsushima but worse - both in visual design, and in general world-building design, so that doesn't leave me super pumped.
I've played GoT twice, and if I wanted to experience that again, I'd just play that again rather than something (potentially) worse.
Having an open world to run around and fight with a version of Team Ninja's combat seems fun, but I'll probably wait for a sale.

I don't mind a far cry Japan with Samurai in 3rd person, sounds fun but what i hate is shit frame rate and pop ups in even performance mode. And you're the first one to point it out, so thank you. None of the other reviewers mentioned that.

A bit late to mention, hopefully someone else did, but based on SkillUp saying the performance wasn't great, keep in mind Wo Long had a catastrophic PC launch that still isn't fixed entirely to this day.
Between a PC with a 2080 Ti and a 4090, I think he has said, if SkillUp isn't getting good framerates and there is no using his own captured footage, that is a very foreboding formula.
I don't think his PC specs matter for a PS5 exclusive lol, but yeah performance issues are definitely not good
This like Nioh will and other games from them will come to PC at a point and unless I hear more people talking good on the story and world don’t think I will be rushing for this one, much like there last few games. Love to hear story is focus, but mean much it’d it’s not a good one with a fun world in. Will just play ghost again when drops on PC for this type of itch if that’s the case.

@@blevins069 don’t agree, 3-5 hours is enough time to get a general feel of a game. If your game can’t convey to a player what your core game is about in that time frame, then you are badly paced. And action games especially don’t need that long.

You people that constantly compare this to ghost are so brain dead. And obviously have never played a team ninja game, their combat is NOTHING like ghost of Tsushima, the only thing that is similar is the fact that it’s in Japan with samurai’s and you goofs automatically think it’s a ghost rip off just because of that one thing💀💀💀🤡
this looks like way more my type of game than nioh tbh, ive had my fill of games that want to punish me for 100 hours straight.
Ghost of Tsushima imo was absolutely gorgeous, but every single quest and locations accumulated to just killing bandits as well. And the only resource u collect throughout the entire game is an item called “supplies” and “metal”. The rest is cosmetic for the most part. Excited to replay it on pc and see if that changes.
Im hearing everything you're saying. That being said, the gameplay looks like an absolute blast, been waiting for an arcade action open world ninja game. Tenchu Z was one of my favorite games from the 360, now that this is coming AND HAS CO-OP. I couldn't be happier, engine looks like a team ninja game so idk why anyone is surprised. Getting this ASAP.

My question is it looks like Rise of the Ronin has more actual Japanese towns (GoT kind of lacked that from what I experienced before I quit) and the mission structure seems to be a bit more story driven. My big issue with GoT is that mission design did not always feel cinematic/story tailored enough and it felt like the game was more about flora and fauna rather than Japanese culture, townships and what not. If Rise of the Ronin does have this more so (and I thought it did by the footage) then wouldn't this make it a standout among the Japanese open world type games?
It has looked dull since the very first time I saw it… :/

Being workmanlike probably describes my reaction to the previews for this. Nothing about makes me tthink it will be bad, or that I wouldn't like it, but nothing about it really pops or says that it will offer something that feels unique. I could see myself playing it, but I don't feel much need to run out and get it at full price.

I’ve had “INTO FREE” set and primed for when I finally boot up Dragon’s Dogma 2. One of the best hype tracks for a game start menu. Even though it completely contradicts the slow paced narrative.

Cluttered maps in open world games is a no-go for me. It makes the world not feel real, and everything Im doing more like a chore than fun discovery.

Sure. Tsushima wasn't groundbreaking, but it was polished and fun as hell.
Rise of the Ronin doesn't seem very exciting so far.
@@greggski3710 Rise of Ronin will have much better gameplay than Ghost of Tsushima, and will be actually very fun to play. GoT gameplay felt like a filler and was mediocre. The game was all about graphics, and this is what most audiences go after. Normies, amirite?

Also because I played the 1st one, and already see how this one expands on it, actually realising it's potential. And because Capcom is making great games right now without failure. It's a no brainer, really, if you know what's up.
Great care and vision are put into Dragon's Dogma 2. It would be laughable to even compare any modern western AAA to it. Well, maybe Cyberpunk is cool, but it's Eastern Europe.
