Siding with the shogunate, getting to help the famous Shinsengumi, for then being forced to fight them either way...to then being forced to infiltrate their ranks, as if I didn't just joined them...was weird and frustrating. Either way, meeting so many important figures of every faction was pretty amazing.

    10/10 let’s go.
It’s beautiful. Ghost of Tsushima is a masterpiece and this is a Japanese developer response to Ghost of Tsushima.
Nioh open world was a dream come true!
WAS, because I already finished it. Truly hope they come out of nowhere and give us DLC.
It would be the perfect end to get a final DLC of the Battle of Shiroyama. For the game that ended the isolation of Japan to also end with the end of Samurai. Now that would be a sight to see.
On the other hand, perhaps Rise of Ronin doesn’t deserve a DLC, but rather a sequel, so they might save that for the end of the next game.
Nioh had a challenge here as well. The first game ended with the end of Sengoku era. So Nioh 2 was a prequel for the most part. And it comes with 0 surprise that Nioh 3 has been confirmed to not be coming any time soon, which isn’t bad because the Nioh series ended perfectly and it’s soul does live on in games like Rise of the Ronin.

I love this review and I agree with almost everything you said, the story didn’t disappoint me as much at first because it does pick up some momentum in the 2nd act. But, like you, I tried to play the pro-shogunate side, but the game made me help out everyone. Even when you just fought and betrayed someone, 5mins later they’re like “I need your help with something”, and I’m like “lol do you not care that I almost just killed you?”
For me the biggest problem I had with the game was the character who is not really a silent protagonist, and I kept getting startled anytime they spoke because I thought they had no opinion (but mine) about the story.
Why do they make choose and customise our character’s voice when they’re rarely speak throughout the game. If they had given the character his own personality like Jin Sakai from Tsushima I would be giving this game a 9/10, but as it stands I also give it an 8.

I give the game a 9.5/10 because I love open world games, and the Samurai. The Odachi is my favorite weapon in the game. And even though I have 4 Katana’s of my own, all fully functional and one made in Japan… I so want to own an ODACHI ! I’m glad the story is fast, because I’m more into exploration in games, than a lengthy story. Just give me good cut scenes and I’m happy.

I just finished playing the game today after a playthrough of about 65 or so hours. I tried to finish all the side content the game had to offer. I find myself agreeing with you completely in regards to the story of the game. I went pro-shogunate too, and felt like I was blindsided when I helped Sakamoto Ryōma establish the alliance between the Satsuma and Choshu. That and pretending as if I’m meeting the Shinsengumi for the first time. Otherwise, the gameplay was utterly fantastic. The combat was difficult, but not anger-inducing (except for one side mission). I hope they release DLC or other content for this game. Because I really enjoyed my time with it.

If Edo is a map I only have one question: Is Masakado's Kubizuka there and what does it look like? This would be before they built the Finance Ministry and tore down the hill so it should be there in all it's glory.
Edit: I have now bought the game and made it to the point you can free explore Edo:
Masakado's Kubizuka is probably not in the game because the Sakai Clan mansion where it was located in 1860 was inside the grounds of Edo Castle and the game does not appear to let you go there blocking it off behind non climbable walls.

I hate these games where you end up sorting through like 700 pieces of gear, I can’t get attached to anything because I have to swap it out soon anyway. I don’t even bother crafting anything because the stats are usually higher on random stuff I get from enemies like 5 minutes later anyway.

Coming from other Team Ninja games (Nioh 2, Wo Long, and Strangers of Paradise) as I don't have a PS5 for RotR, usually for your first/NG playthrough you don't need to worry about investing too much into your loot, mostly looking for the most defense/attack values on your appropriate weapon types. This comes on through the NG+ cycle which I've heard the game does unlock a difficulty on completing the story which I'll assume is that NG+ playthrough. This is where you start investing into gear, blacksmithing, and other related mechanics to make a build to push the game to its limits, for the DLC they add in extra NG+ cycles alongside the DLC story content, expanding the loot system with new rarities and systems to further help with pushing the limits of your build or maybe pivot into a new build as new mechanics/sets catch your fancy.

The story in these games is really jist there to give you contrxt and to be set dressing, its all about gameplay.

Good review Shogunate! I like more Ghost of Tsushima but I love Rise of the Ronin as well! I agree the story is convoluted and the gameplay is too difficult… there may not be any fantasy elements, but enemies move as if they were dragon ball Z, unrealistically fast… and it is not entirely grounded, that is why despite being this an amazing game, I prefer Ghost of Tsushima as is more grounded.
I will play Rise of the Ronin for many years to come and I will just skip dialogue to focus on the fantasy of exploring, as a Ronin, Yokohama, Edo, and Kyoto. This game is superb… thanks for the review!

And I believe you're correct about the story. At some point I just embraced my "sidekick" role in all of this: yes, I'm there, I participate in the events but they're going to unfold in a specific way regardless because it's a game based on a specific period of history. Still pretty interested to see it, though even if as a mere sidekick. The same goes for bonding with other characters to get to know their stories: I'm a bit of completionist maniac, so after 96h spent I'm still only half-way through Edo main storyline.
8\10 is quite fair rating I'm completely agree with too. Not a perfect game, but certainly enjoyable in almost every aspect

I thought they were going to make it a Yojimbo situation where you’re your own man, but very quickly I started feeling agitated that I didn’t indeed have the freedom to play my own way and had to do both sides regardless of how I felt.., and it just made me check out of the story unfortunately…but other than that the game has been fantastic. I wish the world had more animals or a few other things going on, when moving around many times it felt a bit empty, but it was a wonderful experience, besides the false hope of a story that they trick you with 😝

Damn I just finished in at 100 hours 🤣 it’s great imo I loved every minute of it. It took me a minute because I was trying to master as many combat skills as I could with the material available at the time so I like did all the side quests, public orders, shrines and building bonds.
I’d get so excited and satisfied every time I had enough to increase bonds with certain people to get the master level. Shit I even became bisexual in the game because Ryomas gift for making a veiled bond with him is OP 🤣
Anyway I was skeptical about it at first but I’m glad I bought it. Great experience. Especially because I know a little about Japanese history and am interested in it made it more interesting. I already knew most of the main cast from anime like Gintama. For those that know that show, your character is exactly like Gintoki. You even get the option to even join the Infamous Shinsengumi and learn about their origins. 10/10
Also imma leave y’all with the unpopular opinion that the visuals were great imo. Those that were saying it looks like a ps3 game were all liars. 🤷‍♂️

I’d really like to see an alternative universe version of this game that’s level based, with a linear narrative and Ryoma as the sole protagonist - feels like something that’s more up Team Ninja’s alley which makes me wonder if that’s what the game was originally supposed to be. I know it sounds like a tin foil hat take but that’s just the feeling I get sometimes while playing it.

People are entitled to their opinions and able to make comparisons, but people are not taking into consideration that GOT takes place in 1274 Tsushima Japan which is just a small island, and RotR takes place in 1853-67 Kyoto, Edo, and Yokohama. Yes, GOT took a more artistic/cinematic approach, but it's barely fair to compare once you consider the setting of both games. I think both did awesome with what they were prioritizing. GOT killed it when it comes their nature and land, but RotR makes me want to play it for its premodern Japan city life. As far as combat mechanics go, its all personal preference. Im just an old school gamer. Give me weapons, recourses and an upgrade system to improve those weapons and done. I want a more realistic life to the cpu. I dont want to hack and slash and wonder why the cpu is still alive lol. I also dont want to filter through infinite amounts of loot. RotR isn’t bad for a hack and slash honestly but all in all GOT takes the cake for me (on lethal mode)
I just wish this games story was better and didn’t feel so rugged. Things like the fighting styles are amazing but little things like shooting your bow is just disappointing lol.

I'm not sure if you don't play a lot of games or not, but the GoT comparison is valid given they are the same genre, take place in Japan of iniquity and undoubtedly Team Ninja took pointers from it like they took pointers from From Software when it comes to gameplay approach. Preferring one over the other is subjective and given you prefer realism and accuracy, the setting of Rise of the Ronin will appeal more. GoT wouldn't make sense to have the combat variety and Team Ninja's strongest point is this if familiar with Ninja Gaiden.
The customization in Team Ninja games is also criticized to a point as the illusion of variety is there and doesn't actually matter. It's more aesthetic than functional as you constantly swap them out for a new piece that just dropped. I experienced this in the Nioh games and found it tedious and similar to older games that did this and somewhat loot boxes. GoT story is at least understandable and well done for what it is. Team Ninja used to have great graphics and lead with it in DOA and Ninja Gaiden. GoT is miles ahead despite being the older game. It was clearly going for the aesthetic look and not trying to be realistic and I'm not sure how well they could have represented Japan from that long ago compared to the period in Rise of the Ronin having more evidence for it. That's a subjective area, but it left an impression. I like both takes, fantastical and realistic.
I'm a bit surprised you prefer the gameplay over GoT for one reason. As I said, Team Ninja is strongest in this area, but how much of that is practical or realistic? How you fight is more arcade oriented or hack n slash, not taking account of how duals or battle plays out. GoT is far more the grounded game with no flourishes you see in Rise of the Ronin. So it looks like this to me: GoT has the flowery setting while RoR has the flowery combat system. One is easy on the eyes and the other fun to play.
None of Team Ninja's games have made waves as they fall in the shadow of being Souls-like clones with other games like Lies of P doing it better, but it is a position they put themselves in when creating Nioh with that angle. They are fun, but they get fatiguing after awhile and the story is always threadbare. The combat is the only thing keeping me going in their games. Maybe I'll get it on a steep sale, but GoT on PC will be out by then and I'll grab that up as I never had the chance to play the DLC.
And yes. Ishin trounces both when it comes to story and that alone almost beats out any other area of comparison for me. And music. They actually put personality into it while the others settle for orchestration found in cinema that blend together. I hate censorship so haven't gotten the remaster, but am trying to play the PS3 version with horrible translation patch lol

    • @Thomazbr
      @Thomazbr Місяць тому +1

Variety IS there. Nioh 1 and 2 are by far one of the most content-right games I have played. There are so many ways to interact with the combat system and so many ways to build your dude that its quite frankly astaunding. It's Dark Souls' combat on overdose. This is of course heightened by new-game runs when the game confidently accepts the Diablo trappings and becomes basically the best NotDiablo game of the market.
But even on the first run the gear you pick and the stats you choose do matter if you choose to engage with the gear. Halfway through Nioh 1 for example I had build myself essentially a full ranged build and was able to headshot my way through the levels. I know people that have done the same with Onmyouji and the Ninjutsu systems as well. You can of course just pick the best and go for it which works pretty well, but if you want to have the freedom to say "fuck it, i'm doing a throwing rocks" then the game allows you to do that (Nioh 1 did at least)

    • @blumiu2426
      @blumiu2426 Місяць тому

@@Thomazbr Team Ninja has been approaching the Souls formula like a hack n slash, not something methodical. It's variety in combat, as I've stated, but nowhere else. Comparing this to a top-down isometric RPG is the greatest stretch I've seen, but okay. But you're right they have similarities in the loot gain and minor combat elements. Similarity ends there. I think there is a reason despite the combat strength From Software is the one that was mimicked each time they released a game. Team Ninja is trying to find a way to grow beyond their strength and they can't escape the shadow they've put themselves under. I mentioned Lies of P before, that received the most praise for taking on that formula and did some things better in the direction in went, overshadowing Wo Long.
The equipment always matters when you start such games off. That is the hook and is meant to be built on as you progress. However, the common failing is the loot grows beyond reason and miniscule upgrade parameters render them moot. They aren't paced out and have value and familiarity before you find a new one even better. You end up with mixed and matched pieces. In From Software games excluding Bloodborne and Sekiro, the equipment matters. In Lies of P attachments matter and aren't many, but that makes them more valuable in how your gameplay goes between approaches. Variety is good, but too much is a buffet at 2-star restaurant instead of culinary meal.
Yeah, I think they took that idea from the Souls games from challenge runs I know of. They shouldn't have issues adopting builds, it's usually a question of executing them well is the only thing.

@@blumiu2426 My man, combat IS the most important way of interacting with the game world in any of these games. Just like Mario jumps the Darksoulsman and the Liesofpman and the Niohman swing a sword. and Niohman with his deeply wide pool of movesets, spirits and yokai cores is quite frankly simply the best in the market at swinging that sword. It swings the most, the best and in the most varied of ways.
Also comparing to Diablo is a pretty obvious comparison if you have played any of these games ngl. It's commonly said that the first run of a modern Koei-like game is more of a traditional souls-formula but once you hit the post-game it game completes the transformation into a diablo-inspired genre. You have multiple different post-game difficulties with differring tiers of armour sets and bonuses and whatnot. Nioh's equipment matters in the beginning and matters EVEN MORE by the end of it.
By far Wo Long's biggest problem is that the game went several steps back in Nioh's for a far simpler combat loop. There's less build variety, less identity to the weapons, a way more parry focused focus on the game (which still does better than Lies of P but one that makes every combat boils down to a rythmn game [much like Sekiro, really]). It added a jump button and a cool setting and that's it.
Also there's no mystery to why their games do the same engine. Because they want to reuse assets and engine and its just cheaper. They way they add stuff up is through iterative design. Incidentally the game with the most amount of new animations is also the game with less variety (wo long).
