    'Like a Dragon: Ishin!' takes one of the most pivotal moments in Japanese history and infuses it with a soap-opera melodrama that only RGG can deliver. Combined with cathartic combat, a brilliant rendition of feudal Kyoto to explore and some timeless open world game design, Ishin is absolutely fantastic and a must-play.

    really like that part about the open world. I love how the map in Yakuza games is always rather small, but it is filled with so much content, mystery and suprises that every little corner has something for you. It creates that super huge fun of exploring, without throwing you in a world that is way too big. For me, the Yakuza open world is one of the best out there, ever.

    • @trignite
      @trignite Рік тому +12

      Lol, Yakuza games re-use the same exact kamurucho map over and over in all 7 Yakuza games.. and Judgment.... And you spend most of it running through the same areas to the same places over and over and over. Even if you only do the main quests, you will have countless fetch missions asking for e.g 5 items from 5 different convenience stores. That's not fun, you went to them all before, and now you just mindlessly run between them.

    • @thearmanig98
      @thearmanig98 Рік тому +39

      I live in Japan but entering a convenience store in a yakuza game is somehow more realistic than real life. 😂 RGG’s approach to world design reminds me of something Warren Spector once said (I’m paraphrasing here) about his dream game being just a city block. But that city block being as densely designed and accurate to real life as possible. Hence the immersive sim was born.

    • @omarsabeur9039

      @@trignite it's ok if you don't like RGG games man , many people enjoy these games for the quirky stories that make us smile , laugh, cry etc. Yeah I might be just going to grab a bento for a homeless guy , but it's the story surrounding it that is engaging , not the activity itself.

      @aryabratsahoo7474 Рік тому +25

      @@trignite well it's the story that surrounds it. It's no longer a shopping list that rewards me with a new flashy item, it rewards me with what I actually want: the progress of this quest.
      Now see this: there's a quest which is just dialogue then fight a bunch of people, then dialogue. Sounds boring but hear this: But in this quest, you're fighting naked Men dressed in underwear, acting as babies. Now you're intrigued and want to know why it happened and want to see how it ends. That's the difference between a good and intriguing side quest design that defeats most modern AAA open world side quests. A quest's premise should pull the player in instead of the player having to force themselves to complete it.
      That's what makes the Yakuza/LAD games having the best side quests in a game. Period.

    I love the way that RGG studio writes the stories in the Yakuza games, because they never put the plot first, but instead put the characters and their own personal dramas first, which ironically enough makes you more invested in the plot because because you actually care about the characters and what happens to them. Also if you want to play another Yakuza game then I'd always recommend Zero as there's so much to love in that game.

      That's something I love about them: they understand unlike a lot of writers in game development at least on the western side of the world (gee, I wonder why... *Sarcasm*), without the Characters, there IS NO story! First and foremost, those who live within a story's world are the most important part, you make the characters likeable or loveable and the antagonist either hateable to the point where you want to see them get ripped to shreds and their plans fall apart or walk that fine line that allows you to both understand why they came to the mindset that they have to be stopped but also understand that you can't allow them to continue with their plans (Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in particular alongside Persona 5 Royal's final antagonist if you go for the True Royal Ending are IMO perfect examples although the Former is a rather slow burn, but in a delightful way since once the story is at it's peak, hoo boy is it damn good!) and you have a solid foundation while making sure that those involved with seeing the story play out are invested due to caring about the characters and the outcome of it all and the impact it will have on said characters.

    And iirc (I may be wrong, it's been a few years since I played this) this was the first RGG game that incorporated different fighting styles and gave them their own skill tree. They then refined the system and included it in Yakuza 0, and all following installments (except Yakuza 7 obv) up to Lost Judgement. This may have been a spin-off but it was a great way for the dev team to test out a new system, and had much further influence than one might expect.

      *cough* uhh... the Yakuza series pretty much continued where Shenmue left off with the formula it designed. IIRC, a key reason why Shenmue 3 didn't do as well as one would think is because the developers of that game didn't constantly grow as developers, they didn't make all that many games, and wound up pretty much picking up not only in story but in the GAMEPLAY department despite it having been quite some time, at least over one decade, where 2 left off which is... quite honestly, not a good thing as while I love MANY things about the late 90s and first half of the 00s due to BS being at a minimum and games not being gutted cause shareholders and executives want more money while not having any knowledge of games or even play or like them to begin with, there were indeed... growing pains in that era sadly enough. the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series on the other hand and their developers at RGG Studio (basically their name is Like A Dragon in Japanese) have been making game, after game, and even found ways to reuse assets... but in a way that makes perfect sense as they have the talent, something one cannot fake or replicate, to know when to reuse said assets to work smarter, not harder and cut down on dev time and costs while allowing for more stuff to be made. Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami 1 being perfect examples of such, right down to Kiwami 1 having refined 0s battle system... although it'd be nice if they brought it back and refined it even more with the Styles IMO. My point is, the Shenmue devs didn't learn the lessons and skills they needed as they didn't do much work hence why Shenmue 3 seems TMI a bit... dated... in a bad way mind while RGG Studios make sure to get the practice, lessons and the like in. I mean for eff's sake, THEY MADE A DAMN GOOD JRPG IN YAKUZA 7: LIKE A DRAGON ON THEIR FIRST ATTEMPT AT THE GENRE! That is not an easy feat to pull off, I am sure!

      @@fernandofaria2872 I try to actively avoid Twitter since it's usually echo chamber of leftist circle jerking each other and it's toxic. I don't mind someone's political leanings if they don't actively shove it in my face or put it in their entertainment. If as you say that YongYea is leftist, I don't feel it watching his YT-channel at least. He is also not a game reviewer, he does it once it a while unlike Skill Up which is a game reviewer. To make the decision to not review a game as a game reviewer, because of crazy zealot lunatics on Twitter you loose all my respect. JK isn't even transphobe, she is even a hardcore leftist her self, but she believes in biology so that makes her somehow equivalent to the "Fuhrer" to these people...?? It looks just like a game I played back in the day, although more slow-paced. It was called Way of the Samurai, and even though I played them all, I think 2 was my favorite. Just watching this and seeing that it looks like a faster-paced version of The Way of the Samurai makes me want to try it. I never got into the Yakuza game franchise, but I wanted to. I just found it too comical to play for what I know of the True Yakuza, but another reason I wanted another way of the Samurai. is because I got a lot of joy out of taking on the role of the ancient samurai. Who actually acted like how a samurai should act? My best bet may be to go with what is probably the successor of Way of the Samurai, which would be Ghost of Tsushima.

    Really curious to a video focused what your opinion is on what other games can take from this remake, and maybe other things you wish you could see more from the industry. What can they take from the pros and the cons.
    It seems like it really struck a cord with you and I love NOTHING more than listening to people gush about things they are excited and passionate about.

    Good news is there's another Like A Dragon game similar to this one. It's called Kenzan! and it was the first Ryu Ga Gotoku game for the PS3 and I was slightly disappointed this one got slightly remade and ported first. Oh well, here's hoping it does eventually if this one does well. There's also a PSP spinoff duology which I'd really like to see ported someday.

    if you want more of these characters and this world maybe they will remaster Kenzan too, which was the first of these spinoffs. it always seemed weird to me that they remastered Ishin but not Kenzan. probably has something to do with Kenzan being developed for PS3 only so the source code for Ishin was a better fit for a remaster
