I've been thinking of you these last few days after news came of the hostage taking at the Synagogue in Texas. I was so relieved that the Rabbi and other hostages were released safely. It's sad that there is so much unnecessary hostility in our world. I'd love to hear about your skincare routine as your face always looks so fresh.

This synagogue is a mile from my home. I am a nurse, and we received word that there was a hostage situation, and we were all on guard in case of a tragedy. What a relief to know the outcome allowed the Rabbi and his members were released to safety.

Someone once told me to use the words “I get to” vs “I have to” when doing anything. When you look at something as a privilege instead of a chore it helps your mind set. Your interactions with your children made me think of these. Enjoy the privilege of being with them.

It tickles me that an Orthodox Jewish woman living in Texas enjoys Rosemary and Thyme! (I'm from the UK and didn't realise the programme had made it across the pond!) Our family love murder mysteries so we watched a lot of great late-90s dramas growing up including that one

I love to watch Megan's channel, too! I think it's so cool how easy it is today to get a peak into another culture. Before I found her channel, I had only ever seen documentaries about the Amish and Mennonite and it seems that their lifestyle and religion wasn't being portrayed properly at all.
Peter Santenello also made a UA-cam series about the Amish / Mennonites that was very interesting. I really enjoy the insights that other lifestyles bring with them. Sometimes it's surprising how much we can learn from people we seemingly have nothing in common with! :)

Chana, just some trivia for you. I read this in a commentary on the book Peony by Pearl S. Buck. When the first Christian missionaries went to China they found communities of Chinese Jews. I love that! So there must have been Jewish merchants who followed the Silk Road. Though they didn’t proselytize but the Chinese people were inspired to follow Judaism.

Thank you Chana for this video, it is so interesting to be able to participate a little bit in someone's life, their customs, their daily routines, beliefs and find out about their religion. The best part for me is to be able to respect and celebrate all the holidays from the different religions that I am learning about. Channels like yours help to broaden people's horizons and will hopefully contribute to less misunderstandings/animosity amongst religious groups as they all stem from the fear of the unknown.

I'm the oldest child and also a rainbow baby. I remember asking my mother once about the child she lost and did she ever wish that baby had been born (I was fairly young and didn't really understand what exactly I was asking). Her immediate response was "Well, if that baby had been born, I wouldn't have you." I've never experienced a miscarriage, but as a mother, I can't imagine experiencing the dichotomy of missing a baby and yet knowing that if that child had been born you wouldn't have the child you do have now.

I agree with your comment about homeschooling. I homeschooled our daughter and we really enjoyed it. We got to teach our Christian faith to her and go on outings and trips through the years and set our own schedule that is best for our family. We got to teach her things that we thought are important. She graduated Grade 12 in 2015. I think homeschooling is a wonderful option especially for families who want to teach their faith. Teachers work really hard and are much appreciated but there is nothing like a mother's love to inspire their children to really flourish.

I absolutely love your parenting advice. For the longest time, I thought I was a burden to my parents. I could never do anything right and especially my mom would just get mad at the slightest mistake I made. I understand now that they were probably stressed (my brother is autistic), but I still have to live with the consequences on my mental health of their parenting choices. I'm studying to be a teacher/pedagogy (my therapist says that it's such an obvious choice for me with the family background that I have) and even on the days where I'm feeling stressed or when I'm on my period or something I make sure to smile when "my" kids walk into the classroom. I'm not authoritarian at all, but "my" kids rarely ever give me trouble. I just want to make sure that no-one ever feels like they're a burden to me. Being a teenager, or even just being a human being is hard enough as it is sometimes, we better make sure we treat each other with kindness and love. 🧡

i ADORE your videos. I’ve learned so much from you about Jewish culture and it is such a beautiful religion. I was raised a Christian (also live in Dallas and would ABSOLUTELY attend a meet up,) but there is so much beauty in the reverence, ritual, ceremony, and sacred nature of the Jewish faith. Thank you for being such a positive resource and a light for all of your viewers. You are so inspiring.
Maybe for a future Q&A video - Is there any sort of standardized stance on LGBTQ rights in the Jewish religion or your community? As a gay man, I always get a little nervous showing interest or trying to learn more about other religions out of fear of being ostracized or judged. Would just love to hear your stance.
Thank you again for the work you put into this channel and congratulations on your pregnancy! Absolutely love seeing your incredible family thrive

By the Jewish law men are not allowed to sleep with men and for woman it's not appropriate to sleep with woman but also by the Torah we are not allowed to hurt you, it's non of our business, it's only between you and G-d.
This is very sensitive topic, there are some religious gays but pretty rare because it goes against the Torah laws.
The Torah see the desire as something you can develop and accomplish or control it, every person has some impulses he needs to control, and this is the point of connection with G-d, the weak helpless place inside of me creates the every day conversation and the deep relationship with G-d.

    Chana,
Thank you for being so open and sharing your life with us. You're so warm and I always feel like I've "spoken" with a friend.
You may not think of yourself as an expert on parenting but the fact that you are an aware parent is everything. Specifically with home schooling. I know I've mentioned this before, but it's really impressive that you are able to give your kids the individual attention they would never receive in public school, but also the experiences (nature walks, cooking/baking, music, drawing/painting) which will make them well-rounded and grounded individuals. Kudos to you for that.
And finally, YESSSSSSSSS New Jersey!!! We have the best hot chocolate in the NYC area, and I'm sure lots of subscribers who would love to meet you.

My best parenting advice: When raising children the *goal* is to have functioning adults when you are finished raising them as opposed to overgrown children. Teaching life skills (cooking, cleaning, laundry, how to make good decisions, etc...) is as necessary to their development as teaching the "three r's".

If you forgot to do something before Shabbat, like turn on your food heating tray or set up your lights or something you are not allowed to do, can you invite a non-Jewish person into your home to do the "work" you aren't allowed to do, like turn the lights on or prepare your food?

I'm fortunate to have a non-Jewish person living in my home (my son-in-law). Many times, I'll forget to turn on the light on my back porch before Shabbos. I like to daven and read out there before and after dinner. I can't ask my son-in-law directly but I can hint. Something like "it's really dark out here" or, if a ceiling fan is left on but it's cold in the room, I can mention "it's kinda chilly in here." He's become really great at realizing things ahead of time, noticing what I've forgotten or the temperature in the house, etc so he just does things before I can even hint.
This type of thing may be different in different communities.

Your parenting advice is spot-on, though. My mom made mistakes (everyone does), but I've known one thing without a doubt: she was -- and still is! -- absolutely delighted to be my mom. Your kids, growing up with that same foundational knowledge, are going to be okay no matter what. When everything you do stems from that love, you can't go wrong.

I learned a lot from this video, thank you so much. I was hoping you'd address a question I (and a couple other people) had asked earlier: how does your community deal with kids or young people who are gay or transgender? I love that your parental advice is to love your kids and show them how much you love them. So how would you support kids who don't fit the norm? My own son is transgender so that's why I am asking, in part.

Agreed! I would like to know more about how trans individuals can fit within Judaism. Right now I am working on a Conservative conversion (my husband is a Jew.) We have a trans daughter and another who we suspect is a lesbian, so I feel I cannot belong to a community if my children are not accepted and supported.

By the Jewish law men are not allowed to sleep with men and for woman it's not appropriate to sleep with woman.
Transgender is not allowed because we are not allowed to do any damage or change our bodies.

The rabbi's wife does not get paid because she is not required to do anything. She is not the rabbi, she is married to the rabbi. Similarly, the wife or husband of a 5th-grade English teacher does not receive pay for being married to their spouse, though they may be a great help to their spouse.

For your next Q&A with your husband: what was it that first drew you to your spouse (or made you take notice)? Was marriage what you thought it would be, before you were married? From previous videos, you & your husband obviously had some form of connection prior to marriage, but when did you know you loved each other? You DID mention “love at first sight” 😉

Thank you! Another day of learning, as a third grade teacher I love learning about different cultures and the way people do things. We have the day off today so I was able to catch a video early this morning. I think the real reason that you homeschool is because you love your children and you want to spend time with them as well as choose their curriculum and be able to meet them where they are which is so wonderful. I loved hearing about your parenting ideas; your children are lucky! If you do another q and a, I would like to know about Jewish marriage preparation and if there's a process within the religion to discuss your values as a couple and how you envisage married life together. Does the community or family offer advice about how to choose a spouse and be happy together?
I'm also curious about your motivation to convert - did you feel drawn to living a traditional orthodox life, or was it more of a theological conviction? Do you think you'd have chosen a similar lifestyle if you hadn't discovered Judaism?

Thank you! There are classes brides and grooms take before marriage, it’s a one on one class as far as I know to learn about Jewish laws about marriage plus marriage in general like relationship stuff. I’ve always been drawn to a more traditional life, so while I converted reform I came to Orthodox Judaism from there :) There is no telling what I would have chosen had I been born into this! Of course I’d like to think I’d be here :)

It's almost midnight in AZ and I can't sleep....soooo....I have a question.... Will you be publishing a cookbook? You have so many great recipes and I was thinking about you when I made Tabbuleh today for the first time ever. I think you once said your husband was of Lebanese decent? Gosh, I hope I remembered correctly. Anyhow, I know its a Middle Eastern recipe and you share a lot of your cooking as well as your husbands and I would love to buy a cookbook to try out some of the more traditional food. I tried the Matbucah and it was delicious. Have a blessed Wednesday.

As a kid growing up I knew you could convert from one religion to another because I had an aunt that had converted from Judaism to being a southern Baptist. That was confusing to me even though I was raised, more or less, southern Baptist but which I left as a teenager. At a couple of points in my life I also considered converting to Judaism but didn't because of not having access to a Jewish community. This was way before the internet and moving wasn't an option at that point. I always enjoy learning from all your wonderful videos. Thank you!!
