What I Learned Making a Documentary by myself | DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING

- In this video I share with you what I learned making documentaries by myself. Documentary filmmaking can be very complex. When I started making documentaries, I remember thinking that it would probably be something very easy to do. Turns out it wasn't as easy as I thought. But as I got more experienced I learned a few ideas that really helped me improve my documentaries. Here are some things you should know before making a documentary:
0:42 - Embrace the silence
2:30 - Less is more
4:30 - It's ok to as
5:45 - Shoot more B-roll
7:10 - Adapt

Also, pineapple on pizza: yes or no? 😂
Hey epoch, I heard you got a new job, how's it going for you?
Hey Dismissing! How are you?
I might be missing something here, but I didn't get a new job. Am I missing something? 😅
@@epochstories EPOCH firstly, I want to thank you for being so interactive with your audience. It's honestly one of the reasons I keep coming back to your channel (your production quality and your subjects' inspiring stories are a huge plus too, of course). I'm doing well. I graduated recently, and I'm waiting for the dread to set in (it hasn't yet).
Regarding my last comment, I was just trying to make a reference to your skit at 1:00.
Dismissing I'm the one that has to say thank you. You have no idea how much this audience means to me. Sometimes I can get unmotivated or discouraged by the views, but knowing there's an audience like you that keeps coming back truly helps me get back on track. I don't want to overdramatize, but it honestly means the world to me.
that's exciting! A new chapter is coming. How are you feeling about it?
Ok...I am too tired 😅 I was looking at your comment for so long trying to understand what you meant, and the answer was so obvious hahah
What about filming during covid times? And do you get releases signed for your subjects?
Let me know if have any feedback on the video. I'm always looking to improve my content, so any feedback is highly appreciated
Such great advice. Less is the best option 100%
This was a fantastic video and very helpful for other aspiring film makers
Thank you very much 😁 I'm very happy that it's useful
I love the genuine honesty in your explainer videos. It's a breath of fresh air from all the other youtube channels. I'll be following your progress for sure. Hopefully I can make a yoga documentary by myself with your tips. Thanks!
Thank you very much Austin! I'm very glad you enjoyed it. Best of luck for your documentary 😁
Wow, what a great insight into your work, and all this in a humorous way, excellent work. Your documentaries always feel so natural, like the person in focus doesn't mind you filming, even though it's "weird" for most people to be filmed. And how cute is the dog! :)
Thank you so much Luisa! I always try to establish a connection with the person first, so then they feel comfortable with me getting close.
And the dog is called Kira and she's my sister's :) my sister brought Kira to my place while I was filming that section, so I thought it would be a good addition to the scene 😂
Such great insights!!! We’re just starting out with our documentary filmmaking so we learned so much from you! Embrace the silence is such a good tip. Always love to connect with others who have a passion for documentaries.
Love these behind-the-scene videos! Equally interesting as the documentaries themselves (even though I'm not particularly into filmmaking).
Thank you very much! I'm experimenting a bit with the content to be honest. Looking forward to trying different things :)
As a solo documentary filmmaker myself, I love this film so much. Thank you! Lots of helpful advice! The skit at 1:35 is too funny! Love your humor.
Thank you very much! And I'm glad you've enjoyed the skit haha not sure how people would take it. Best of luck for your projects :)
You are very underrated and have been a great help to aspiring filmers like me.
Thank you very much :) I'm glad it was helpful
I love your new series on how you make your documentaries, thank you! If you are looking for ideas, it would be awesome if you did a whole video on how you make your b-roll. ♥️ Thanks again!
Thank you so much LaTeigra. And thank you for the suggestion. I'll put that on my list of topics :)
THANK U FOR ALL this information
I just found your channel because I've been asked to film a documentary and am so happy to have your content. Your stuff is amazing and you are an amazing story teller. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying my content. Best of luck with your film. It's a very rewarding experience :)
I’m about to start shooting my first documentary and very much appreciated this. I particularly liked the bit about keeping the equipment simple as I’ve been gearing up lately and totally overdoing it!
That's exciting! I'm glad it was helpful. Good luck for your first shoot :)
Yeah, there's really no need to overwhelm yourself with loads of different equipment. But I think it's also a matter of experience in that regard. The more you shoot docs, the more you'll understand what equipment is useful or not for your work.
Completely agree in regards to letting your subject just be after they finish answering a question. Love the video, currently gearing up for a first short doc and got a lot of constructive info from your videos. Keep it up :)
Thank you very much! That's exciting :) have fun!
i cant believe you just have 10k subscribers bro, such quality content deserves more! keep up with the good work bro! love from india
Thank you Uttam! I'll keep on doing my best :)
These are all very genuine advices. Glad that I found this channel.
I loved what you had to say about silences. Werner Herzog is a master of this in his documentaries. :)
I actually didn't know about him! Gotta watch his work. But silences are definitely a crucial part of a good interview and, at least for me, it's much harder to do it than what actually looks like.
2:50 - I would bet your pupper has an important job too! 😍 Keep your mental health in tact!
That's my sister dog actually. She's called Kira. But she's a great company for me too 😁 I hope you're doing well too Naj
Hi Epoch, this work is really great, really helpful! Especailly the comment about the "Silence", it's not cheesy at all. Looking forward to your new works!
Thank you so much Chuan Hu! I'm really happy you've enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy future videos :)
Super useful. Thanks for sharing all of these tips!
I'm glad it was helpful! Thank you
This was really interesting, even though I'm not a filmmaker, just a filmwatcher.
Thank you very much. A new film is coming up soon to. Not really a documentary, but I think you'll enjoy it :) thank you so much for the constant support
Great video! You have unique content, I like how you work and your art in communicating. Thank you for sharing your learning.
Thank you for such interesting tutorials!
thank you. I'm glad it was helpful
I like the silence part😂
haha thank you! it's so funny how sometimes we feel so uncomfortable with silence
love this. thank you for sharing your experience and expertise.
Thank you Josh
So helpful! thank you!! Portages rule!!!!
Such good tips!
Thank you very much Nyasia :)
Great video! You're a great teacher!

Hi Mario! Thank u so much for sharing ur experiences and learnings shooting documentaries! Could u do a video about the way u color grade ur videos, or more about wich picture profile u use? I just started making videos and it seems like s-log and so on, just hinder my work for a beginner.
You’re so great ! I am an Italian filmaker working for Italian tv and I really would love to move to London to make short documentary and try to sell them. I don’t know anything about the market..do you have any tips for start?
Pineapple YES.
Haha it's a never ending debate
Do you use any holder or bracket to hold camera and mic during video making..
Hey Rajesh. Yes I do use one. I use a top handle. I just bought quite recently, but it never leaves my camera. It's really easy to hold and it also helps reduce the shake of the hands. You can get one quite cheap on amazon, 30$ or something.
Hi what cage are you using?
Hey! I'm using the smallrig cage for panasonic
I can not believe that I am only discovering you - Are you in London? - I'm doing a module of documentary making at University and so far the tips you have shared with us as been so useful. How do you find your stories, id love to have a chat with you? If I could make some docs half the quality you have made yours, Ill be set for a first. Look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you very much Junior :) I live in Portugal at the moment, but I travel to London sometimes to film some stories (with covid things are much harder now, so I haven't been travelling).
I appreciate your compliments, but I don't really know much. I just learned by watching youtube videos and trying stuff. If I can make it, I'm sure you can make it too :)
Regarding the stories, I just search a lot online, or I get some recommendations, or I get in touch with Humans of London. It's the hardest part of this work, to find stories that I can see that can be turned into films.
@@epochstories Thank you EPOCH for taking the time to respond back to me I really do appreciate it.
Sorry to sound dense but where online do you look - you see when I look online I mainly find that the story has been done, so is there a source you could recommend or do you just look for other angles in stories in the news lets say?
Yeah COVID is being tuff on us now, I'm worried that not being able to go out so freely is going to limit what I'm able to produce.
In your case, you have picked up the skills of being able to edit and put together great observational docs maybe in Portugal you could try and create a Poetic or Essayistic doc.
look forward to seeing more - cheers
Hey Junior. I apologise for replying so late. I still struggle with this, as I'm not a journalist. But basically I just around a lot. I also might see something on instagram that gets me curious and so I try to research a bit deeper about it. Regarding your worries of find an already told story, I think that's fine. A lot of the stories I share, I found them online through Instagram or newspapers. They were already told, but in a completely different matter and media. By making a documentary, I feel I can add a layer to the story that written text doesn't do. At the same time, you can find something in the story that hasn't been said yet. I hope it helps
What software you use to edit?
Hey Rolando! I use adobe premiere pro
Hi,Which laptop and video editing software you are using for documentary films.
Hey Rajesh! My laptop is the Dell XPS 15 9570. But you can edit video on much cheaper laptops. And to be honest, mine has some issues that are quite annoying so I I wouldn't recommend it.
And as an editing software I use Adobe Premiere Pro. But you can use Davinci Resolve free version which is an amazing program too :) it really depends on what works best for you
@@epochstories thanks bro for suggestions.. actually I am planning buy laptop ,that why I am asking this question.i am for macbook pro basic entry level.
No problem :) yeah I think Macbook pro will be more then enough :)
What camera do you use please?
And lens too??
How do you edit too😭😭
Your edits are sooooooo good!!!!!!
Hey Sheira! Thank you for your kind words! I'll reply to both of your questions here.
Camera - Panasonic lumix Gh5
Lenses- I just use two lenses. The kit lenses that came with the camera and the f1.7 25mm Panasonic lenses.
I don't really focus too much on equipment. I think it's much more important to really know how to use the gear you currently own and focus on other things such as audio, story, composition and lighting.
As for the editing, that's a tough question haha not sure if I have a recipe for how I edit. What I do is just watch a lot of other short films and then I take not of what I like and try to apply those things in the editing process. I play and experiment a lot. I know this is not super super helpful, but I really don't have a "guide" on how to edit. To be honest, I think I have still so much to improve and learn. I would suggest you to do the same thing I do. Watch other videos and films you like, really observe what you think it works for you on those films, (why did they cut at scene at a certain time, the music they added, etc) take note of those things and then just try to replicate them. That's how I learned 😊 and maybe you can also search on Google and UA-cam how to edit short films. There's a ton of great info out there. I hope it helps
I have a needy community school help me on how to make documentary and where can I sell for it..... We need fund to build
Hey Stpatrick Centre! I wish I could help you, but I don't really know how to fund or sell a documentary. All the films I make, I make them available for free here on youtube
I have checked some of your videos and you make amazing content, but I feel like you are not getting the views that you deserve.
Thank you again :) I just want to make the best work I can and then hopefully the views will come. But if you enjoy my content, please feel free to share it as it can be a major help in getting my work recognised :)
@@epochstories OK brother I will do what you have asked for and best of luck for your upcoming video. keep up the good work Love from India ❤
Thank you so much for the support!
