I first beat this game, in an inflatable chair, while waiting to go to see Blair Witch in 1999....truly one of my favorite gaming memories, I legitimately love this game.
@@writer46m72 I think I was 5 too when I played this and no it wasn’t scary, I remember getting my older cousin so mad he threw the control at the Nintendo because we kept laughing and distracting him by saying there’s Jason’s toothbrush when he has the axe in the cabin fights.
Like Jekyll and Hyde, Friday the 13th ain't great, but it goes to great creative lengths to stay true to its source material. Well, except for the fact that Jason is wearing purple overalls and a blue mask, but that was still kinda cool.
The wild west of video games, when they got more sophisticated than the single screen arcade affair of the Atari and nobody knew what the hell they were doing yet. It was a magical time!
Great play through Alex. You make the game look easy (it’s not!). It’s ironic how some of the LJN NES games are actually ones we appreciate more (or dislike less) as adults; you’d think it would be the opposite. I remember this game always being the cheapest game at Toys R Us back in the day. For me, the extremely creepy atmosphere of this game and the items/secrets make it a decent game. Also, it reminds me a bit of Goonies II, which is a game I’ve always liked. Who knew we’d appreciate LJN when we hit middle age! I guess it helps that Atlus developed it. p.s. I agree that 33:22 is a really cool moment in the game (finding the sweater). I always thought the sweater sprite was really cool and how you flash after getting it. It’s a nice touch.
@rjcupid Thanks! I remember seeing it on clearance too, haha. The 3D rooms reminded me of Goonies as well. Even the music is sorta similar. I wonder if it was a direct influence here.
This game is considered by some to be an early example of a survival horror game and when you think about it in that context, the game makes way more sense.
I know Jason couldn't be the only enemy in this game, but it looks like the zombie apocalypse is going on at the same time! Those hapless counselors have bigger problems than Jason Vorhees right now! Joking aside, the game is pretty fun once you get the hang of how the map works, and the sound it plays when Jason appears does make you jump sometimes.
@@dundundata7603 It’s a shame too, something that could have explained what was really going on and how the game works could have moved it into the top 10 NES games instead of bottom 10 ever!
I'm 45 years old and I remember this game very well. To this day, the gosh darn music is so atmospheric, even with a little bit of sound they could muster on the Nintendo. Cabin tunes were also great.
Remember the part in the movie where the teenagers had to throw knives at the zombies? And then the teenagers had to box Jason like Mike Tyson Punchout?
I was about 8years old when I played and finished the game . One thing that scared the 💩 out of me was having watched the movie then plying this game alone at home at night lights off , every time Jason would suddenly pop out , It would be a jump scare ! F you Jason ! It haunted me throughout the years .
This brings back memories playing this game as a teenager with my sweet little half brother in the mid 1990's when I went to WV to visit my grandma and my dad. I really miss those days. Watching this was a pleasure and thank you for posting it. Reminds me of the good times...
I saw all the FRIDAY THE 13TH movies and also played the computer game on my Commodore 64. The NES game looks cool 😺👍🕹️. Happy Friday the 13th from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.
My two gripes with this game is how fast you have to be to prevent the campers from dying and how repetitive the Jason fights can be. But dang if that interior music isn’t a great tune. It makes feel like a holy force thinking about my situation as I slowly trek forward.
This game creeped me out as a child. LOL I had the nerve to try and play it in the dark. Whenever Jason popped out I'd be terrified. Even the music right now is unsettling LOL!!!
There's actually a tie in to another film universe - the Evil Dead franchise - that was confirmed by director Sam Raimi. In Jason Goes To Hell, the Voorhees family home is being searched and in one room, we see a copy of the Necronomicon. Pamela Voorhees had read from the book to bring her dead son back to life - and we all know what that means.
its nice seeing a playthrough with both mark and crissy being used and not just mark. i would like to see a play with all 6 characters being used and given the most powerful stuff they can possibly get.
@@thecunninlynguistI was asking out of curiosity because I always see you here and everywhere else. To answer your question, I don't think so. By the way, I found your page on Twitch. ✌🏻

Holy cow. I didn't think you could get more than 1 of the torch! But then I was a dumb kid who only ever got the machete by farming kills between Jason appearances because I hadn't lighted enough fires to see the notes.
Had a feeling you'd upload this lol. I have never played this game nor have I seen any of the Friday the 13th movies. I just know it from both the AVGN and Game Grumps. I appreciate the *_attempt_* at making a non-linear game, but they did everything wrong. Also, a few more songs would've helped break the monotony.
I personally prefer the Nightmare on Elm Street NES game, which is probably the best game to hold the LJN logo. Hope you will cover that before the spooky season is over.
OK. Hear me out,.... Does anybody else think it would have been a more ominous and creepy(ier) experience to remove the cheesy zombies, birds and other enemies like that with the exception of, of course, Jason, his hidden mom fight and MAYBE one encounter with a crazy old guy or something but I think it would have added to the already creepy tone. Imagine wandering around that map listening to that tune ALL ALONE until Jason pops up. 😮
I'd quote the AVGN about this one, but I actually like it. It's not that hard to figure out if you pay attention, check the map to see which direction you're going, and realize killing zombies = better weapons. I do agree with the funky colors they made Jason; _why_ did they choose purple?
My friend: will be funny if Jason pops out of nowhere. Me: Don't F**kin jinx me. Game: Jason appears Me: I TOLD YOU NOT TO JINX ME! yes that's actually happen.
That music I think was the damn scariest, especially when Jason showed up.
Props to the composer because for an NES chiptune the cabin music is STILL unsettling all these years later
Its a lot like De ja vu
@@senseicorey9979 yes!! That’s a great game with a great soundtrack
I love the Cabin theme. Maybe not as unsettling but It kind of reminds me of Prayer from Megami Tensei 1, which has the same composer.
This is legitimately the best thing LJN ever published.
A nightmare on elm street its good too
And spiderman-maximum carnage on the snes.
Well, Atlus helped with the development of the game, so now you know why.
@@olimac82 That would explain it!
That's a low bar LOL
