I received these today in the black color. Listened to a few hours of various music and tinkered with them. Definitely benefits from some toe in, at least in my listening space. Mids have a bit of the "sshh" sound, but not bad. Overall seems like great sound for the price and fills a large space. Very impressed with the bass response, so I'll keep them as a 2.0 stereo setup for music. I've heard they benefit from a break-in period. We'll see. I'd recommend them to anyone for $200.
I'm so glad that someone is taking speakers apart, messuring and doing more than... lets say bigger channels are doing. Just listening, talking about subjective poop and maybe letting your wife in for a second opinion, just isn't telling me shite. The way you do it also gives lots of ideas for home made speaker builds. Seeing the drivers they use on these mass produced stuff and their Theile parameters is golden! :) Edit: Dont forget how to do it once you get those $7000 speakers! Might be a little bit more nerve wrecking! :)
Thanks, OlaJustin! Yeah, I had no idea so many people would be interested in the same nitty gritty stuff that I am about speakers. I think its cool we can share our interests like this. This is one of the reasons why I started this channel because like you noticed all the speaker reviews are very subjective (hence I don't like doing them). IMO I would rather know about the drivers, crossovers, and cabinet construction that make them a great speaker instead of some subjective review from a person I don't know. PS: I am working on a Look Inside video on my Sonus Faber Venere S speakers ($5000) per pair. The crossovers in these speakers are insane and should be for this kind of money. :)
Thank you putting this out. I’ve owned my Classic T65 for over a month and have been impressed both with their decent performance and reasonable accuracy, even the packaging is well designed and executed. It’s a great speaker for a starter setup or secondary system. Brian
Thanks for the video. Good to see a relatively well made affordable speakers and you taking the time to break them down. Your views inside are very helpful. Rock on!
Not bad for $200 bucks! I really enjoyed my time with them. It definitely brought back memories from when I was first starting out in this hobby, but back then the speakers I had weren't anywhere near this good.
Bonjour de la France....... merci pour le démontage de cette enceinte acoustique colonne......... tout petit prix, idéal pour les petits budgets..........
Thank you. I've been waiting for this one. Your examination turned up about what I expected... barely adequate cabinets with relatively good drivers. I'd say these are ripe for Constrained Layer Damping on the inside back and sides and maybe a series crossover to improve phasing at the crossover point. BTW ... these things are almost $300 in Canada. Sold by Solen.
No problem! IMO lots of value for money with these! I would love to play around with CLD on these cabinets. I was just watching a video on this very subject yesterday and was very impressed with the before and after measurements they took.
I thought it time to replace the T652's with the best option being T65. JBL Stage 280P was considered but it has some problems plus cost. Watching so vids to get the low down. Thanx
Just ordered a pair of these T65 speakers to be driven by my Fosi V3 (48v) as a 2.0 system for music. This is to replace an old Google Home speaker which doesn't fill the space very well. I was debating between these or the Polk ES20 or XT20 bookshelf speakers. Ended up going with the T65 for the lower price and footprint. How is the bass response on the T65 for music in a 2.0 system without a sub? Dayton claims it goes down to 35hz but that sounds like a stretch perhaps.
Congrats! I think you will be very happy with them. IMO they offer tremendous value for money at this $200 price point. Bass is decent in a 2.0 configuration as long as your not trying to fill a huge room. This is always a loaded question because some people are bass heads and others are not. With that being said, I was quite happy with their bass output in the rooms I tried them out in. The largest room I put them in is between 800-850 square feet and I thought they filled the room with bass quite adequately. Enjoy them!
Thanks for the reply. I'm not really a bass-head nor an audiophile, just a casual music listener while I'm cooking or doing dishes etc. As long as they can beat the fist-sized old Google speaker that they are replacing, I'll be happy. I am also slightly concerned about putting them on a tile floor. Do you think it would be beneficial to put some sort of nonslip/soft pad or rubber feet under them above the tile floor? The room won't be treated, so I'm not really trying to optimize the sound too much.
@@YupHio Yes. I would recommend getting some isolation feet if you plan on placing the speakers on title floor. This will help decouple the speakers from the floor, otherwise during bass notes it will transmit that bass energy into the floor and rattle any everything that isn't bolted down. Maybe something like this will work well with the T65? amzn.to/3C6bePv or these (non adhesive back) amzn.to/40jTeKU
Round feet would lower the width of the contact area. I have toddlers and pets, so tipping may be a concern. I'm going to try the towers on some cheapo 1/4" mousepads, and if that makes a difference then I'll try to find some square silicone feet or build a platform and use the round feet. Thanks again. Your response got me thinking.
Do you have L1 & L2 inductance values? These look like very nice speakers. I have T652s' and am very pleased. Have also used the Dayton Audio PS 210 full range drivers which are good sounding and efficient. The PS 180 is smoother but lacks bottom end. Transmission line cabinet might work well.
Have you seen my look inside video that I did on the T652? I agree they are very good speakers for the money, but the new T65 is quite a bit better. Sorry. I don't have the inductance values on the crossover. I might be doing a upgrade video on the T65 anyways. These speakers are begging to be upgraded and since I can't leave things alone it will probably happen. :) Happy New Year!
Compare the tweeter in this $199 speaker pair to the $269 per pair Cerwin Vega 6 1/2" bookshelf speakers. The Cerwin Vega 1" silk dome tweeter is much much nicer and more robust. I am extremely impressed with the build quality of those $269/pair Cerwin Vega speakers.
You're going to have diffraction problems with the grill long before you get to the cabinet edges. It looks to be about the same thickness as the box edges.
The grills stick out about an 1/8" from the cabinet when installed. I think the target audience for people who buy these speakers aren't even familiar with the term diffraction. :) If people are reasonable with their expectations then I think they will be very happy with their purchase. I know I was impressed by what they were able to deliver for only $200 bucks. IMO Dayton Audio hit a home run with them.
"changing the crossover parts to better capacitors and air core inductors will significantly improve the sound..." Wrong. To wit: replacing any electrolytic capacitor with another type will change the crossover function. That's due to the internal R [resistance] of any electrolytic capacitor. Changing the R will shift the frequency point and phase of the crossover. The same thing may happen if you replace the iron core inductor with an air core one. The end result's likely to be brighter, possibly harsher, and much less coherent. Response ripples are likely to result. The only way around this situation is to measure and then redesign the crossover. Or, just leave it alone.
I really appreciate the offer, but I would feel terrible if they got damaged in shipping and that's a risk I wouldn't be willing to take. Thanks for the offer though. My dad used to own a pair of 2001s that he bought at Sam's Club back in the 90's. Boy were those the days.
@ understandable. They are my first pair of half decent speakers. Got all 4 for 75$! I think they sound pretty good. Not much to compare them too besides HomePods and echo studios.
@ also I’m super glad this channel got recommended to me this morning. Straight to the point no bullshit and just enough technical info that tells me you know what you’re doing but not so much as to drown the novice audiophiles in unnecessary jargon. (I’m the latter so thanks lol) will be looking forward to future videos!

Only thing they went backwards with is the recessed baffle. Those raised edges are going to introduce diffraction.

Question, would you consider recommending a whole set of these (towers, bookshelf, center) for a 5.x.4 HT setup?! Thanks 🎉
Absolutely! For the money these speakers are very hard to beat without spending quite a bit more. IMO they offer great value for money!
You gotta get that electrolytic cap out of the signal path. That is single handledly the biggest bottle neck here
