In this video I list all of Tom Petty's albums in order of my least to best. I'll include his albums with The Heartbreakers, as a solo artist and with Mudcrutch.
Great video and rankings, thanks for posting this. And nice to see Hypnotic Eye getting a lot of praise, which it deserves. I would suggest giving "Let Me Up" and "You're Gonna Get It" a few more listens, as those albums take a while to grow on you (especially LMU). And I do like "Makin' Some Noise", partly because it's based on a couple of real stories (he did briefly work for the state of Florida, and he later heard a guitar play across a canyon and played along with it). Nice job though identifying some great tracks and great albums, as well as pointing out the production qualities. Realize too (as you likely do already) that there are enough Petty songs not collected on a proper album to fill about 3 more LPs. As you've noted, "Keeping Me Alive" was kept off of "Long After Dark" (it turned up on the "Playback" 6 CD boxed set, I don't think it was ever on vinyl other than a 45 B-side). Many other great songs on "Playback". Then there are the 2 extra songs on "Highway Companion - Special Edition", both great ("Home" and "Around The Roses"). Other collected and uncollected tracks include "I Don't Belong" (an "Echo" outtake, would have been one of my favorites on that album), and several tracks from the new "Wildflowers & All The Rest" boxed set ("There Goes Angela", "Confusion Wheel", "Somewhere Under Heaven", etc). And a few more uncollected tracks such as "Sweet William" (another "Echo" outtake). And finally, the Stevie Nicks song "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" is really a Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers song with Stevie Nicks' voice added. Anyway, very enjoyable reviews/rankings.
18 - Mudcrutch 2 (2016) 17 - Highway Companion (2006) 16 - Mudcrutch (2008) 15 - The Last DJ (2002) 14 - Hypnotic Eye (2014) 13 - Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) (1987) 12 - Mojo (2010) 11 - Into The Great Wide Open (1991) 10 - Soundtrack From "She's The One" (1996) 9 - Long After Dark (1982) 8 - You're Gonna Get It (1978) 7 - Wildflowers (1994) 6 - Southern Accents (1985) 5 - Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers S/T (1976) 4 - Hard Promises (1981) 3 - Full Moon Fever (1988) 2 - Echo (1999) 1 - Damn The Torpedoes (1979) * like your presentation, hope to see more
I agree, "Damn the Torpedoes" is Tom Petty's best album. It is one of the best sounding albums I own. Love how the guitars sound, it really captures the urgency and excitement of the performances. Beautiful.
nice video! TPATH are my favorite band and I actually planned on doing the same video this weekend! however my list is a lot different than yours. I'm a big big fan of the blues and so your bottom ranked albums for me are much higher. always cool to see what other people think!!
Thanks Hailey, I look forward to seeing your video. I'm just less of a blues fan so those two don't appeal as much but its cool Tom has done lots of different sounding albums through the years.
Fantastic job---as a decades-long fan of TP&HB I really enjoyed your analysis and opinions, very well informed, very well thought out, really enjoyable video!!
I really like Long After Dark, Damn The Torepeados, Southern Accents amongst favorite Tom Petty albums. But least favorite is Let Me Up (I've had enough)
Interesting list. I must say my personal choices would be a lot different. I have a lot of love for the Last Dj just because it's as true now as it was then. Also you may not like the song Joe but the lyrics are the sad truth....
difficult ranking TP albums. I think you did a good job. I've been leaning a lot toward Hard Promises of late. I'd probably place that in my top 2-3, along with Damn and Fever. I always chuckle when someone says they have over heard an album and that's why it scores lower like it's the album fault you over listen to it haha. Picking on you for that, but it's no big deal. So yeah top 5 for me would be Fever, Promises, Torpedo's, Accents, Hypnotic. - but who know it'll be different tomorrow anyway. Those 5 though are usually gonna be right up there. Wildflowers is great as well. Mojo is too low in your ranking but hey ho something has to be on the bottom now doesn't it. Cheers Ross
Thanks James, I maybe shouldnt have used the word 'Overhead' for Full Moon Fever as its an album I love (hence it at number 3) but personally I think Wildflowers has some better songs and Damn The Torpedoes has more edge to it. Thanks

I agree with your top pick. In 1979 I got turned on to Tom & the Heartbreakers by getting this album for Christmas. Great album.

Great list. I'd agree with the top 3. I'm impressed with your collection for such a young guy. Full Moon Fever was my introduction to Tom Petty.
