I didn't listen to any Paul Weller until 2 years ago. I am a huge Oasis fan and Noel Gallagher always talked about him as an influence. Plus Paul Weller did my favourite Oasis solo in Champagne Supernova. I''m from North America and he never quite broke through here, which is a shame cause he has an amazing catalogue. He should be more revered as he is in the UK. For me Wild Wood is probably his opus and one of the greatest albums from the 90s. The song that really gets me is Hung Up and should have been a single at least in North America. Those first 5 solo albums are amazing and can't say any songs from those are clunkers, all amazing songwriting.
zoostation Opposite way round for me, I was raised on Weller (have a brother named after him and there were pictures of him all over the house growing up) and ended up getting in to Oasis about 3 years ago.
Wow, can't believe you put Heliocentric so low! I really liked the album. It's the albums that followed it (with the exception of studio 150) that I just found forgettable. Saturn's Pattern is where I felt he did something memorable again.
What a great review, Ross. I am one of those old guys in their fifties who saw The Jam twice and bought the Jam albums on the day of release. I loved the Jam albums, and played All Mod Cons, Sound Affects and Setting Sons to death at the time, but don't play them much anymore. Have to say my desert island choice would be Paul's first solo album. Love that you have so much on vinyl!! Go well.
Thanks, Those Jam albums were so important to many young people at the time but its the type of music I think what can also stay with you a lifetime. Since filming this almost 2 years ago some will have changed about (plus we've had a further 3 new albums since this) such as the debut solo album probably will be in my top 5. Thanks for watching
@@RossGoodallMusic true. I know all the words to every song still! They deserve to be up the top of your chart. 22 Dreams is my second favourite album. Guess our tastes change slightly as we go through life!

Disagree with some but pretty much on the money and well described. It also made me re-think some of my opinions on a few and give them another listen. I am glad I did, Saturns Pattern being one. I agree with your number 1 but I would have Our Favourite Shop at number 2. Keep up the good work, very impressive.
Hi Thanks for watching and your lovely comment means a lot. To be honest my list has probably chopped and changed since I made this video but one thing that hasn't is Weller being one of the greatest. Cheers
@@RossGoodallMusic my favourites change all the time too but that's testament to how good he is. Just watched your review on Morrissey's new album and agree it tails off towards the end but generally it's pretty damn good. Cheers.
Great reviews! It does give people a feel for the diversity of Paul Weller's musical works. I notice in the UK people tend to put the Jam albums in a higher order, whereas in Canada we would put The Style Council albums higher up on the list. The amazing thing really is how many legendary artists would have such recent releases so high up with their classic work? Well done.
Great video. I´m very very fan of Weller´s solo career. Its great to see some opinions about what is to be the best songwriter ever. Just stumbled on this (with Sunset Blvd just released). I'd love to hear what Weller would think of your rankings, it's very thoughtful. Enjoyed the episode a lot! I'll be watching more of yours
hey Ross, very ambitious video, you are brave haha. It's so difficult to compare the 3 projects but I would say you did a very good job on this, and while I'm still very new to Paul Weller apart from The Style Council, and the Jam a bit more, and the solo stuff just building on it a little bit, I think our opinions are going to line up pretty well on the ranking. Kudos to you for this video, this would be very difficult. Great job.
Ross Goodall rewatched to see how my ranking is looking. We have some differences for sure. Where would you put A Kind Revolution? Top 10 for me. I'm going to make my version of this video a few weeks after the new album drops. You're the best Ross, enjoyed this so much.
I like The Cost of Loving. Would have put Studio 150 below that personally. Think it's become lore that it's not good. Personally, I reckon it's great. Modernism, a New Decade was not good but interesting and a brave thing to do. Trying to move Mod dance music onwards. Heliocentric deserves it’s position except that Cost of Loving is better. Studio 150 is far too high for me. Do like Wishing on a Star though. Confessions of a Pop Group is fucking brilliant! Would put that above Sonik Kicks. You seem to not like Style Council that much. Illuminations by anyone else would be great but average for Weller. Cafe Bleu too low. Not a Style Council fan. Worth it just for the piano version of My Ever Changing Moods.
