I knew shit about Persona, or Atlus for that matter prior to 2019. After Joker was revealed, I did my research and played the games, and I fell in love with Persona, 💕. That's how I feel about any franchise connected to the Smash multiverse.
People don't seem to recognize they're in the Old Married Couple phase with Smash, which leads to them hyper focusing on the negatives and finding new problems they didn't have before.
A thing i noticed with smash and literally not any others game is how sect-like most smashers are. They play that game and nothing else, of course you're going to get burnt out at some point. Street fighter, guilty gear, tekken, granblue and so much other cool games are just out their waiting for them for cheap (or even free with things like fightcade) and they just don't reach out lol
Nah it's just melee players trying to tear down Ult. Both melees most well known modern players transitioned to Ult for content temporarily and their viewership and success of course shot up since melee is rotting.
@@TwinHacari melee is no where close to rotting. their numbers just keep going up. new talent is taking over old legends. and the meta is somehow still evolving, like donkey kong beating several top players using their mains when he was widely regarded as mid as you could get and yoshi winning majors. both games are great. theres no reason to tear down one game just to make the other look good in comparison
I don't get how Ultimate can get a bad name just because a few of it's players did some horrible stuff outside of the game. How did just playing Smash, the 5th game in a widely acclaimed series, become disrespected??
it wasnt a few, so many people who were representative of the community did really disgusting things behind the scenes. Ultimate being a lame smash game is subjective but its not that uncommon to hear that from a lot of people too, bad online, lack of single player I dont think its too weird to not understand this sentiment.
@@AdventVFXit actually was a few, many of the accusations that came came out turned out to be false after being investigated. While some of it of true so much of it was exaggerated and had no factual basis.

Is smash bros no longer relevant? Yes. Is smash bros dead? No. All it takes is a few passionate people to keep a game alive and smash bros fans are great at that.
I hate how people overthink this. Smash’s popularity died because every games popularity dies. Even if it had pristine netcode and an amazing story mode and Nintendo supporting the competitive scene the games popularity would still die off. Look at the best fighting games like SF6, and tekken 8. They have all that but sooner or later people have been dropping these games and more will. Because nothing lasts forever. People will always move onto the next big thing.
Are you trying to tell me a game that just released last year is more popular than one released over 5 years ago? Well, I don't know what to believe anymore!
Is this a video explaining the "decline" of Smash Ultimate or is it just about summarizing the hype cycle and life cycle of the game? Because most of what this video is is the latter.
@@WatchDoggyDog This game has like no content tho, classic mode is fine but spirits are much more boring that trophies and don't even have a description, event matches also got turned into spirits mode but was waay better in melee , brawl, and 4. The one minigame in classic mode sucks and I wish we had break the targets or board the platforms. you also don't have to do specific things to unlock characters which I know mewtwo sucks to unlock in melee but still in past games you unlocked other characters by messing around with the different modes in fun and unique ways. You don't have any stages to unlock and all star mode got butchered. World of light is one of the worst modes in smash bros history and I would happily take adventure mode in melee over that any day. What happened to smash run and other fun modes like master orders or crazy orders. The idea of custom moves was super fun and more unique that a spirit.
@@LoLRyRyRonHate to agree but you're totally right. How melee still has the best and most variety of the series, being 17 years older than ultimate i don't understand
try getting new internet? mine upgraded several times over the years, it now rarely lags, and even on my older worse connection, it didn't lag too often compared to how much it was basically perfect.
@@WatchDoggyDog There is more to it than just slow Internet. Unlike most other fighting games since the 2010's, Smash sadly lacks a feature known as rollback netcode. People who normally keep under 20 ping on other games reported consistent lag spikes on SSBU. The hardware limitations of the Switch may also be a factor. Using 5G with an Ethernet connection however would probably help a lot too.
I can thank Smash for introducing me to Persona 5 which then introduced me to Shin Megami Tensei. If it wasn't for that, I don't know where I'd be right now.
Same here and for Fire Emblem. I still don't get it why so much hate for a bunch of characters. I mean, there are nearly 600 FE characters by this point
I was in the smash comp scene for a while but as I got to know people, even at my locals, I realized that the scene is plagued with kid diddlers. Tried lots of other tourneys including smash and splash with no better turnout. Fighting games in general attract that kind of crowd and I can’t bring myself to “enjoy” anything about playing with those monsters
I just want Subspace 2, a cheesy fanfic crossover battle for heroes and villains to come together to save some goofy insane nonsensical world… maybe with deeper mechanics, greater replayability and even voice acting…? 😪 shame that might not ever happen with Sakurai’s stubborn stances.
I've only played Ultimate and a little bit of Brawl, but I'm upset that Mewtwo wasn't included in the one Smash Bros. game with a story like that. Like, his Smash Bros. version is apparently based on his movie version (not sure if that's true), and that version made a storm that was going to wipe out the entire *world*. Like, could you imagine him as a separate party/faction with his cloned Pokemon and mind-control? "Cheesy fanfic crossover" indeed.
The game is like 6 years old. There is no downfall. Its a natural decline that any game goes through at the end of its cycle. Just say you need more channel engagement.
Masahiro Sakurai said he doesn't know if there will ever be a New Smash game. Buuuut Smash is the biggest crossover in gaming so Nintendo will never let it die. But I think it will be a soft reboot. We're probably going to get a subspace emissary sequel since it was originally planned for ultimate. Maybe a crazy New mechanic that will change the gameplay forever
@@therealjaystone2344 I don't think that's going to happen. Smash 4 is a Wii U game and instead of an easy port to the Switch, they made it the biggest game in the series
@@joopvanhedel1372the best way to maintain the same level of hype for an enhanced smash 5 port: •give it that EPIC story mode with the cutscenes (The more characters the better, but it doesn't have to use all of the characters in the story) •give us (the actual) popular missing modes from past entries, like break the targets and reach the platforms, make them online as well, trophies would be nice too •all Ult. dlc included, plus a few (3-6) new characters, plus at least 1 fighters pass dlc (5-6) •add new music and things, and unique online events following the last dlc character, to keep it fresh. host many Nintendo smash tournies, in as many regions of as many countries as possible "to find the greatest smasher in the world" (me ;) yearly!!
@@aegishdaegoI'd say bigger and better in substance than scope. With Fortnite they are just skins, with no gameplay differences at all. With Smash every character is unique and has their own playstyle. With the only three exceptions being Belmonts, Peach and Daisy, and Dark Samus and Samus.
*Blue Pill or Red Pill* *Red Pill:* MultiVersus free to play that has a competitive focus with EVO, good cast of characters, good online, interesting / unique mechanics (But suffers from UNBALANCED characters, many bug issues, useless story mode and micro transaction galore) *Blue Pill:* Smash Bros. one time purchase to great content, amazing characters, good mechanics, casual / competitive friendly. (But has bad online, story mode is boring, EVO killer and is switch exclusive)
I tried giving multiversus a try but I just really didn't like the combat and like you said many bugs, So I tried multiversus but it just wasn't for me.
I think the reason why the game fell off is because of its story mode since nobody really like the story mode and the online be messy and Nintendo always shuts down Smash Bros Tournaments. So their isn't that much content the smash community can chow down.
Easily! It’s really fair to say these are the biggest reasons for the game’s downfall. Honestly, I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a good while now and it’s shocking nobody’s really made a definitive deep dive into it xP. Guess that shows how many have actually moved on from the game :c
I hope Disney takes advantage of this by announcing Marvel vs Capcom XL with a 100 character roster at launch, rollback netcode, a Smash Bros mode just for Disney to revive the tourneys closed by Nintendo with full support on the competetive scene to spite Nintendo. Disney weaponize your jealousy and envy to goo and better use!
Smash “was” the game I played all day when I got it, I still love the game, but idk at what point, I just don’t enjoy playing it anymore, I still play it with friends sometimes, but it just dosent gives me the enjoyment it used to give me, I’m still thankful for it introducing me to persona5 lol (English isn’t my first language so my grammar are bad)
If you could mod the game it'd give it a whole new life for you. It's the sole reason I bought a Nintendo switch and I still continue to play to this day like every day. Thanks to mods it keeps the game fresh
I agree with this video about 90%, the community though yes has kinda ruined the fun competitively with the meta, the petty drama, and the controversies regarding some pro players illegal actions. There is still some good things, like Sakurai said, and still holds true “Smash Ultimate is the ultimate celebration of gaming as a whole.” It brought everyone one together, I met so many great people from this community, however 2020 and onward really left a sour taste in my mouth in terms of the competitive community. Nintendo’s business strategies was wild, and the Panda Gobal situation… (enough said there). But really for me it’s petty double standards for me, but hopefully TO’s will find a way to fix that, I refer to how they handle banning players and characters in some tournament settings, and not doing proper investigations when a player has allegedly committed a crime. Over a hundred pro players banned, and not a single one of these players have faced jail time; and unfortunately a majority of these cases have passed the statue of limitation, that really pisses me off.
I really hope we get a deluxe. There's so many fighters in this game that I truly deeply care for. That taking one out would break my heart. I literally have ALL the amiibos of this game and would buy more. I will not regret any purchases of said game. I also have ALL of the DLC of this game too. This game truly deserves a deluxe.
For me, one of the biggest bummers was how _bad_ the single-player content has been for the past couple games. Bringing everyone and almost everywhere back, and going crazy on crossovers, cost Ultimate so much of the Smash essence. Side modes and bonus games suffered in particular.
I really wish they just kept Smash open ended and every couple years we could rely on a few new additions. If you keep the reveal buzz alive, the game never loses the spotlight. You could even have multiple teams work on the characters and Sakurai be the final phase of approval to take some of the load off his shoulders. It's called Ultimate. Be Ultimate. 🙁
@@aerospacewelding I've played Ness since 1999. That said, I play the older characters more than the newer characters, so I have played a TON of the original 12.
You're a good narrator, and your editing is solid. You definitely have the talent and skills to make these videos work. With that said, I believe the direction you took this video is a bit lacking, to say the least. This entire video is essentially summarizing the timeline that (at the very least) a fair portion of the audience watching this already knows. Most of this video is a recap where you're taking an almost reporter-like approach to discussing this with very little of your own personal thoughts and feelings which would have made it more interesting. Plus, you kind of just shoehorn Nintendo getting involved being the "definitive" thing that killed the scene when it seemed like the Panda situation had more of an impact than that did (and other things). You also neglected to mention multiple important things that I think contributed to this game falling off. - Once again, the whole Panda situation. - The impact of Fighter Pass 2 (You brushed over a decent amount of it without really explaining certain things that you could have expanded on) - You mentioned it, but I felt like you could have elaborated more about the online and its impact, because this singlehandedly turned a lot of people away during the pandemic. - Competitive players thinking the competitive scene and meta were stale - Competitive and casual players not liking a lot of the characters' movesets and thinking the directions weren't good- this is a problem that more and more people are calling out with time. A lot of the characters are stale and boring to a lot of people now. - Time. The game was 5 and a half years old when you made this video. Player bases shrink over time just like how TV show viewership drops after it ends, or movies get less viewers over time on streaming services. It's old, and people move on. I know that's a bit of a boring answer, but it's important, and neglecting to mention this at all feels like a cop-out. Like I said, the way you talk feels natural and nice, and the editing does everything it needs to. It's solid from a technical perspective, and I think summarizing things in a way for people unfamiliar with the game's cycle is fine, but some stuff gets lingered on, while other stuff is brushed over. I'm not saying you had to mention everything I listed, but neglecting to really go into ANY of it while most of the video is a recap just makes for a clunky presentation. Yes, some of them are opinionated, but they're common enough opinions among the fanbase that they're worth considering. I don't mean to sound to negative and hateful, but I wanted to summarize the thoughts and not just leave a comment saying "Video bad because [insert vague reason here]" because I feel like that helps nobody.
surprised no mention of certain characters that negatively impact spectators of the game, which further hinders growth in the competitive side of things
I literally had an idea yesterday about writing and making a video about why Smash went silent, you hit almost every point I had written, this was super well done. Nice production! If you don't mind I still kinda want to make one and give you the shoutout because this is great
the game still rocks, as you know, despite your title. I got smash ult. about 1 year late, but had played it at tournies a bit following it's release. time flies. Zer0 was innocent, idk what happened with anyone else, but that shouldn't affect people's love for the game so much. my tourney days were cut short, but I hope they pick back up with the help of an epic enhanced smash ult. port, which includes everything good that 1 may ponder up for the ultimate enhanced port, which I've typed out so many times, including in a reply to one comment here. just beat a guy I've been wanting to beat in a set for a while online yesterday, and the online modes in general remain a constant place of joy/rage, that beautiful mix all we smashers know too well. Long live Smash, and bring on the enhanced port: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Supreme !!!
I.. don't think zero was 100% confirmed innocent. He just settled the court case. I'm pretty sure that's still a grey area. If I'm wrong about that, tell me tho, cause I'm genuinely curious.
I'll always have Smash in my heart and it did do an amazing job at introducing me to some of my favorite franchises of all time - Xenoblade, Persona and Fire Emblem (for awhile lol). While I definitely do still have a sour spot for the competitive scene and the events that happened between COVID to now, I will definitely be one of the first to line up for the new Smash. Let's be different this time 🙏🏾
It's funny how when street fighter 5 had 8 frames of input delay, everyone was in shock, it was a controversy, and the game got patched, but when Smash Ultimate had that, nobody cared.
banging vid. Given the title, I expected more time spent on 2020's nightmare of a situation, but it's actually much better that you just glossed over it. would've made for a pretty uncomfortable watch. giving a litttttttle more time to the whole panda situation would've been cool too.
Here's the thing: I see smash as a gateway into fighting games like street fighter because it teaches game sense and stuff so after I got sf6 (happy first anniversary) I just visit it from time to time to see how sweaty the game has become
I think this video is extremely biased towards a competitive/hype culture/fandom perspective. It is completely normal for a game to wither in popularity after a few years, that's how everything contemporary works, not everyone is listening to The Beatles anymore but no-one would call them "unpopular"! Not every game can be like Fortnite or Minecraft that receive updates continuously for years ( even then, those games have been updated so heavily they aren't the same game as they were 5 years ago. It's to Smash Brothers teams credit they finished their game). Not everything can be a Smash Brothers Melee, that can build up a niche community over a course of years full of die-hards. It's normal. Even then, saying it "had a downfall" is ridiculous and you're only thinking of your own perspective, its still popular with casual fans and has it's own diehard competitive scene, that is extremely rare. So many games fade before they even make it that far. I feel we live in a culture where people feel games should be played forever, that not being talked about 24/7 anymore is a bad sign, not just how trends and culture work.Personally, I feel not all games should be played forever! There should be a time where people move-on, for diehards who love the mechanics on a deeper level, yeah they will stay, that shouldn't and won't be everyone. Playing one game for hours and hours, and getting bored is entirely normal, not some sign of an underlying fault. ( Most "die-hard"Smash Brothers fans don't even encage with 90% of the content that doesn't fit the ruleset they made up. Most people will only play as one character, stick to the made-up rule set of no items and only a certain amount of stages. To me, sticking up what stages, items and characters you use have kept this game incredibly fresh with friends. )
I grew up with Melee and honestly doesn't hold up anymore. I know I just triggered millions of reees by typing that, but it's true. I'm sorry, but gaming has some a long way since 2001 and I prefer the Smash Bros game with tighter controls, Banjo and Kazooie and Sora in it. Everything eventually loses popularity and I get tired of these melodramatic videos from people begging for e-checks for easy video topics. The competitive Melee scene is not only toxic, it's filled with predators and Nintendo had good reason to distance themselves from that community.
Man... people get REALLY defensive whenever anyone criticizes this game, huh? I'm just gonna say it... Ultimate is definitely not my favorite game in the series, mostly because of its incredibly lacking single player, extremely mediocre story mode, and the online still leaving a lot to be desired. Also, Spirits are just so much lamer compared to Trophies. Sure, it may have every single character that's ever been playable in Smash's history, and while that may seem cool at first, the novelty quickly wears off once you realize that the rest of the game was kind of sidelined for it. To me, it just feels like they took the "Quantity over Quality" approach with this game, and it's why I haven't touched it since early 2021.
Wow a lot of Tendies sure went into full on defense mode whenever someone will say Smash Ultimate is the definition of quantity over quality with the worst netcode along side of a manchild community that would rather be concenred over not getting enough washed up Scrimblo Blimblo slop. Then actually doing something for their massive PDF.File problem that is continuously growing at a rapid pace.
On god though, that’s what I’m saying. Smash has one of the worst communities ever and this game is boring asf now. These smash glazers would rather die than admit their slop game is garbage now.
@@anotherrandompersononthein8601 my bad, it’s not slop, it’s definitely a good game; I just wish smash fans would admit that it definitely has gone a bit downhill though.
Me and some friends had a gaming news website a couple of years ago and I remember during the pandemic we came with the idea to make Smash Ultimate open tournaments in cinemas taking advantage of lower screenings, enough space for everyone to stay safe and we got the approval of the site along with sponsors so we had some decent prizes like Pro Controllers, amiibo figures, discounts etc Long story short, the heads of the local Smash community started trashing our event, talking crap that playing on a screen like that, there was gonna be too much lag, told their members that they'll be banned if the participted and that the prizes were a scam and in the end we had to cancel it due to bad press and low attendance. Thanks to that I learned that the Smash community doesn't want anything that is not run by them, they always want to see the same players again and again and that apparently a keychain or a $1 is a great prize. I love the game, I still play by myself or with friends but I don't want nothing to do with the Smash community anymore.
Major respects for the efforts you put into this event. It hurt me so much reading how the community reacted and it sucks. I completely understand your frustration and honestly it’s things like this that really just make the fandom a joke 😞
I don’t think the game sucks. But I think there should’ve been some more things. Event matches would’ve been fun as well as a boss rush mode that Brawl had.
Brawl smash 3ds melee they were all fun and looked better even wii u smash i play the 3ds on my new phone and in high res is amazing brawl is def fun i love the castle fortress music.....ultimate lost that feel i can see it and no nostalgia......but with brawl melee and smash 3ds so much of it
I can’t even remember the last time I played Ultimate specifically, DLC aside there’s just nothing to do in the game and I’m never motivated to play it, however I have been playing some smash mods occasionally.
So the downfall of the game is because of the lockdowns, disgusting behavior from its professional players, some underwhelming dlc characters, and Nintendo bad business practices on tournaments. I thought this was going to be a criticism to the game itself and not the unfortunate events around the game. I think we reached the point where we are fatigued of the game and now we point to stuff that literally has nothing to do with the game
I think my current distaste for the game comes from my old love for it. It came out in my early highschool years, and I have to thank it for uniting my current friend group. Its a real shame theres just so many issues that added up over time, and the outing of half the scene as creep was the final nail for me.
I'm glad that this wasn't all just a bunch of bitching over Steve, as I'm sure many viewers expected. It focused more on the efforts and actions of Nintendo which was a good idea. Good video man :)
I've essentially moved on from video games but played smash bros from 64 to smash 4... but I remember playing ultimate in 2019 and was instantly turned off from the native input lag along with other changes. Ultimate may be the biggest smash game but it was the most forgettable for me right along with smash 4, I didn't care about it and tournaments were boring.
@@cardinmalone4974 I am easy to beat in ultimate cause I don't play lol. Only played ultimate a few times before I got bored of it and went back to melee, which I quit too
When Sora was revealed... I was happy.... for everyone else. Look, I understand that not everyone will make it into smash but there were a few missed opportunities like obvious echo fighters. I wanted Shadow in Smash so bad I got banned because of it XD (I added too many mods to my switch)
I only play this game occasionally if my friends and I get together. Online, aside from the terrible net code, is full of broken DLC using try hards. It might as well be dead post final patch.
right now my only real problems with smash ultimate, as a whole are honestly pretty minor ones that.. just got more annoying over time. But i'm also a solo player.. I play the game normally in places with out internet. So my kind of problems don't always match the problems Multiplayer and competitive players have. The Biggest problem.. honestly for me.. is the lack of single player modes. On one hand having a special arcade ladder for EVERY CHARACTER is really cool... but at the same time you don't really have a random classic mode you can just hop into. The amount of content is simultaneously massive in terms of characters, stages, and items but then lacking in terms of ACTUAL modes of game. Sometimes I still play Smash 4 3ds just for modes like Smash Run. Allstar mode, Target smash, So many goofy game styles that feel special and FUN that are just missing from ultimate. I WANNA SMASH CRATES AS TERRY! I want a constantly evolving All star mode that kept sending people at you in the YEAR they were first created... Another problem is an honestly super minor annoyance.. the Game not keeping track of who I AM PLAYING. Needing to pick my character and my color over and over is a pain... and then editing the rules can be a major annoyance instead of just basic settings like in past games.
I think the problem is people are used to live service, multiversus, new mortal combats, but Nintendo doesnt have that. They have ultimate as a game not a live service one. That why people liked the dlc characters it was more content. I think the next smash will be live service
I got into xenoblade and fire emblem from this game and I don't regret it they're good games and after playing three houses and xenoblade 2 I completely understand why byleth got in along with pyra and mythra
I’ll just Say this, I Don’t Think Smash Ultimate is Dead….Atleast the offline Part, There are a lot of things I can do or create Offline that just makes my experience more Fun. Online However, The Connection is just the Start…But there just isn’t Much to do outside of Quickplay, Battle Arena & Tourney in my opinion. Maybe if they had an online Squad Strike, or even better, online Classic mode could expand on variety a bit. So that’s the only reason I don’t go online as much like I used to in smash, Other then that, The game is Good.
It's been almost 2 years since I touched this game. I would've played it more if it had content like All-Star mode. I lost interest in World of Light so fast. I want an Adventure mode that's more exciting, like Subspace. Having the Primids as playable characters would be cool.
My problem with Ult is its single player modes and online, besides that it's my 2nd fav in the series. Also 15:04 "It also gave us a ton of Final Fantasy representation", didn't realize Final Fantasy only meant FF7...
I feel like the game is less dying, more people hyper focusing on the negative parts bc it's old. That happened with every game: Melee, Brawl, and Sm4sh, as well as 64. Now, i agree the highs arent as high, but dead? Not even close.
No fun content other than just playing smash, shitty online, broken dlc ruined the fun of the competitive scene. Game’s dead no matter how many copies sold over the 6 years this game’s already been out
My main issues with Smash Ultimate from what I remember: The game barely felt like an upgrade from Smash 3DS/Wii U. Hardly any brand new stages, items and characters. Of course the DLC characters and stages helped. Playing online, which was far worse than the previous Smash games. Delayed inputs and I remember there were plenty of times where it clearly looked like I should have been able to punish an opponent who missed an attack or grab and was left wide open, such as a very strong but slow attack or grab. But they somehow manage to get me first, which wouldn't have happened in past Smash games. Especially from characters who were heavyweights. When playing online, many characters attacks or grabs seem extremely difficult to counter unless you maybe had a decent projectile. It often felt like there was no cooldown time for missing. Their hit box seemed to last longer than it should have. I heard online connections are somewhat better now from a patch?
31 new fighters and 49 new stages from Wii U to Ultimate ain't enough? You are right though about online connections not being great from what I've heard.
@@JacobNGames I meant base game, when starting out. Most of the new characters are DLC, which you need to pay extra for. Most of the new stages are also dlc.
I'd argue practically changing the entire lighting/art style of the game, mechanics like jab locking, jostling, and dodging being completely overhauled, the AI being drastically buffed, doing a lot of character reworks to make almost all of them viable (not always in tournaments because that shouldn't be 100% of the focus in a party game), and having different physics than the last game are more than a lot of AAA developers would try to do nowadays.
Sakurai biggest mistake was installing new characters for other companies games as promotions and I believe it was byleth, pyra and mythra, and min min both were unfortunately still new a time.
The only thing that would kill ultimate is the fact that most people want smash to be a competitive only game instead of the wacky “holy shit it’s the blocky dude from Minecraft” smack down game that has a vibrant and cheerful theme to it. Every now and then there will be some people in the community also tend to gate-keep the idea of new players and fun, this combined with the fact that the average quick play match is either a lag fest or a fight against a dude sweating his nuts off because he doesn’t want to go pro in the big leagues. It’s kinda like a 35 year old man playing little league soccer because he doesn’t want his ego to be shattered by other grown men who have trained years to join a high paying team. In other words; it’s not the game it’s certain players that don’t want to have fun in a mind breaking crossover fighting game or just hate the fact that a certain character got in fair and square (I understand why people hate bayoneta’s rigged vote). I forgot to mention that there are also some people that straight up send death threats if you disagree with a character vote and the fact that someone will hate on you for playing a character that you like (an example is Steve) which is an issue because people are banning certain characters and stages because a few people had a skill issue while playing against a certain character or on a specific stage.
This really makes me want to talk about the smash fandom and these issues, but sadly I was just as guilty with the whole overly competitive mindset on the game lol. Still am if you ask me cause I never play with items or default stage settings
I like how it took 11 minutes to finally get the point of the "production", only for the points to be "I didn't like Byleth", some really bad drama (that is really bad, don't get me wrong), and tournament guidelines. No points about the actual game itself, like the current meta game. The only points were new fighters and outside factors regarding the game's competitive scene. It's a really lackluster picture of this game's downfall honestly. There is a lot more to it; feels like an outsider's shot in the dark on why SSBU is having problems rn. I also especially liked how you pointed out how good other fighting game online experiences were in comparison to SSBU's online, although the fighting game genre is infamous for having the worse online experiences in the entire gaming scene. It was actually post-SSBU when fighting games finally accepted newer forms of online play (specifically Rollback). You might want to research before making massive claims like, "SSBU is the ONLY bad online fighting game" next time. Gotta be honest man, this video was a huge waste of my time. As a huge SSBU fan, I learned absolutely nothing from this video. This all is very harsh to say, but I say it only to put the flaws of this video up front so you can improve. Next time, focus more on an objective reasoning behind your point and provide evidence for it instead of just saying what you feel and calling it a day.
For me, the downfall was changing all the final smashes to instant ones. It ruined it for me. Brawl was the last time I had actual fun with Smash, casually.
Good video but I think you honestly missed a few VERY big reasons why smash ultimate is on a downwards spiral. As someone who still plays this game and is very active in the scene to this day I'd say the biggest things that killed Ultimate where not the 2020 allegations, the pandemic or the new nintendo guidelines although those definitely did not help. It was more the fact that fighter pass 2, while having some characters that many people wanted was EXTREMELY polarizing in the competitive scene. Min Min, Kazuya, Pyra/Mythra and ESPECIALLY Steve are all extremely broken characters in their own right compared to 99% of the cast and pretty much make up the majority of the top tiers in the game. They all promote really unfun playstyles such as Min Min walling you out from halfway across the stage, Kazuya killing you off of 1 hit, Steve doing BOTH of those etc. It was so bad there where talks of banning Steve from competitive play because he was just so unfair and killed viewership whenever he was on a tournament stream because no one wanted to watch his campy playstyle. That mixed with the current top tiers of smash ultimate such as Sonic (who runs away the whole game) Game and watch (who plays the game for you) and a lot of other characters made people just lose interest in the game because playing against and watching those characters every single bracket was just not fun to most (This is coming from a Steve player) Secondly 3 HUGE companies in the scene Panda Global, VGBootcamp and Beyond the Summit all shut down or took HUGE financial hits after a falling out between them in 2022/2023. Together they pretty much funded the scene and hosted a lot of the major tournaments that kept the scene alive. So much so that the scene was going to have not 1 BUT 2 separate tournament circuits that 2 of those 3 companies where hosting which was the Panda Cup (Panda Globals circuit) and the Smash World Tour (VGBootcamps circuit). The fact these circuits shut down JUST as they where about to host the finals for both was a MASSIVE blow to the community and when Panda shut down and VGBootcamp lost pretty much all their funding and ended up being a shell of their former company basically financially ruined the community from that point on because they helped fund and get sponsors for a lot of the major tournaments. After they shut down a lot of tournaments that where once under the Smash World Tour or Panda cup couldn't afford to run anymore for the next years and had to shut down as well (Including Beyond the Summit) so it was basically a trickle down effect from the top dogs to the small local scenes, especially cuz after this PLUS the fighter pass 2 characters making the game not fun to play anymore many moved on which meant not as many people entering tourneys which meant tourneys where losing sponsors which meant smaller prize pots which meant less money in the scene. (This is coming from someone who worked at Panda Global) That's what I would say those are the REAL reasons Smash Ultimate is on a downfall because at this moment most of the casuals have kinda moved on since other things have come out plus this game being nearly 6 years old at this time and the only thing really keeping the game alive and in the public eye is the competitive scene which is dying off because of the reasons stated above. Again you had good points but you def missed some crucial things that happened. Would def recommend doing more research or reaching out to a competitive player/someone who has been in the scene a while because they can give you really good insight to the ongoings in the community.
Smash Ultimate is really a hard game to pin down my stance on definitively. There are good points and an equal amount (if not more) of bad points. I don't follow the tournament scene, so my perspective is on the game itself with minimal community perspective. To get the community perspective out of the way, I became numb a long while back to the fact that none of my hopes got in and don't look back to before then fondly, if ever. Sure, I'm impressed that I was able to successfully guess that Banjo & Kazzoie, Sora, a rep from ARMS, and a rep from Xenoblade 2 would be included, and I thought it was genius to include Terry to tribute how King of Fighters 95 inspired Sakurai to model a beginner friendly system to Super Smash Bros. in the first place, but the atmosphere of Ultimate didn't feel as fun as previous entries, especially when speculation became toxic much too quickly. I lost count how much harassment I and a few of my friends had to deal with just over speculation, the worst of which came from Minecraft & Shovel Knight zealots. (It didn't help that I already didn't have positive opinions of those franchises before Smash.) The "Everyone is Here" hook looked nice on paper and for the roster, but what fun is a massive roster without interesting things to do with all the playable reps? I get that Smash is a fighting game series, but there was more than just fighting to do in previous entries, so that's not a strong excuse. Ultimate arguably has the worst "Games & More" selection in the franchise, even considering that 64 only had Classic, Versus, Break the Targets, & Board the Platforms. With the innovations that Melee, Brawl, & 4 brought on, it was sad to see Ultimate backpedal so much, making it feel hollow in some regard. Steve was easily the worst addition to the roster due to exploiting bugs in the stage reprogramming (which was made to accommodate his inclusion, no less). I would have said Kazuya was the worst, but being Bayonetta on steroids is child's play compared to screwing with the game's code. Speaking of hollow, World of Light is easily the worst Adventure Mode in the series, bar none, and part of the blame lies on Ultimate's key collectible: Spirits. I get that Trophies were becoming too resource-intensive, but the solution shouldn't have been pulling stock PNG's of the characters & items. Brawl's Stickers may have done that too, but they were supplemental collectibles as Trophies coexisted in that game. With how Spirits are on their own and don't even have as much as a short bio to let players learn about certain series, it makes the feature feel lazy and uninspired, especially due to Spirit Battles fluctuating in quality from decent to abysmal. Plus, it sucked that there were some third party series that only got representation through this half-baked feature that felt like an overglorified Google image search. Also, after being shown it after Joker's inclusion, I can say that I hate Persona 5 and the entire Megami Tensei franchise, so thanks for bringing to light a franchise that I should avoid, Smash Ultimate.
game is fun but the moment i started playing online quickplay the whole table just flip upside down and made me stop playing it quickplay is just too toxic and laggy asf…
I will always play smash to some capacity but yea you may be right that even a passionate fan like me wants to play other games even if I love or like playing it for fun and even sometimes competitively. I can relate to having played it since the release and it feels so strange how smash was in a good place for a while but it's not over. There will always be a way to enjoy games, especially platform fighters. It's why I'm looking forward to rivals 2 (sequel to rivals of aether) it's not dead but yea things are not the same even if people play it but maybe somethings were unavoidable.
I don’t know if Nintendo shutting down tournaments not following policies or if players dropping out because of this policy is reason behind the decline of SSBU, but unless if this is all about tourney or really the reason behind the decline, if it is because after the release of Sora as in content updates or so this is supposed to be expected. If this happened to SSBM before the release of SSBB, then does that cause the decline of SSBM, even if SSBM isn’t even dying even with those restrictions including at that time?
I think that moreso falls under the meta stagnation that he alluded to in the video, and in my honest opinion it was more like the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. There were many things post-2020 that set things in motion that I won't really speak about due to the controversy (and it's a sour spot for me personally tbh)
But brawl had mk and icies and smash 4 had bayo, cloud, and diddy But nobody had complained so hard when these characters were objectively worse Yes, this is a reason, but only a small part of it.
@@Recarsonated this exactly. Those were definitely low points for Brawl and Smash 4, but there also wasn't the hailstorm of circumstances now that Ultimate has hanging over it's head. Completely different circumstances tbh
@@Recarsonatedat least those characters aren’t boring af to watch. Sonic timeout is horrendous to watch. Steve and G&W are OP and their movesets are a bit boring, but they are not as egregious as Sonic.

Very interesting

Is smash bros no longer relevant? Yes. Is smash bros dead? No. All it takes is a few passionate people to keep a game alive and smash bros fans are great at that.
Few thousand more like looking at the regular 2000 tournament entries at Japan Super majors
The novelty of Minecraft Steve fighting against Sephiroth and Sora while on a WarioWare stage will never cease to be funny.
Its prob a salty melee fan. They're getting replaced by Ult and feel it.

It may not be, but somethings pertaining to it definitely died within the past few years and everyone smells it rot.

@@WatchDoggyDog There is more to it than just slow Internet. Unlike most other fighting games since the 2010's, Smash sadly lacks a feature known as rollback netcode. Using 5G with an Ethernet connection however would probably help a lot too.

Sakurai instead prioritize the trailers which have lead to so much hype
I honestly would've been happy with a subspace remastered with a few new missions added to it. World of light is trash

I think the reason why the game fell off is because of its story mode since nobody really like the story mode and the online be messy and Nintendo always shuts down Smash Bros Tournaments. So their isn't that much content the smash community can chow down.

No one hates Nintendo fans more than Nintendo...

- The impact of Fighter Pass 2 (You brushed over a decent amount of it without really explaining certain things that you could have expanded on)
- You mentioned it, but I felt like you could have elaborated more about the online and its impact, because this singlehandedly turned a lot of people away during the pandemic.
- Competitive players thinking the competitive scene and meta were stale
- Competitive and casual players not liking a lot of the characters' movesets and thinking the directions weren't good- this is a problem that more and more people are calling out with time.
I got smash ult. about 1 year late, but had played it at tournies a bit following it's release. time flies.

Given the title, I expected more time spent on 2020's nightmare of a situation, but it's actually much better that you just glossed over it. would've made for a pretty uncomfortable watch.
giving a litttttttle more time to the whole panda situation would've been cool too.
All this game is is "do one combo that's not possible to avoid until you win. And then teabag as if you're good at the game"
Yall just not used to a finished game

If someone shares their opinion against something, you are also entitled to give them your rebuttal.
@@MarcusGronkowski slop??? idk you don't have to like it but slop? (Also i would argue most games have a man child community)

I do hope that Ultimate will be rereleased, with all fighters in the Fighters pass now in the base game of the rerelease
It's such a shame too, especially as a casual player. I'll never know why all the media I like die out quickly.
would you stop yapping for a minute, this game is 6 years old, it is allowed to die EVEN THO IT ISNT
Me and some friends had a gaming news website a couple of years ago and I remember during the pandemic we came with the idea to make Smash Ultimate open tournaments in cinemas taking advantage of lower screenings, enough space for everyone to stay safe and we got the approval of the site along with sponsors so we had some decent prizes like Pro Controllers, amiibo figures, discounts etc
Long story short, the heads of the local Smash community started trashing our event, talking crap that playing on a screen like that, there was gonna be too much lag, told their members that they'll be banned if the participted and that the prizes were a scam and in the end we had to cancel it due to bad press and low attendance.

Brawl smash 3ds melee they were all fun and looked better even wii u smash i play the 3ds on my new phone and in high res is amazing brawl is def fun i love the castle fortress music.....ultimate lost that feel i can see it and no nostalgia......but with brawl melee and smash 3ds so much of it
It's still alive after 5 years and lived through a pandemic the if you want to see a downfall see multiverses
Its always like this around the end of a Smash game
I also stopped playing Smash 4 around the end just like everybody else in my friendcircle
0:50 Etikas passing started its fall from grace
No it didn't but that's still very sad what we went through and did
This title is crazy, smash scene is still super active and alive as ever
I think my current distaste for the game comes from my old love for it. It came out in my early highschool years, and I have to thank it for uniting my current friend group. Its a real shame theres just so many issues that added up over time, and the outing of half the scene as creep was the final nail for me.
I stopped play smash after last dlc i felt complete
I'm glad that this wasn't all just a bunch of bitching over Steve, as I'm sure many viewers expected. It focused more on the efforts and actions of Nintendo which was a good idea. Good video man :)
No mention of the Smash World Tour / Panda Global controversy?
I've essentially moved on from video games but played smash bros from 64 to smash 4... but I remember playing ultimate in 2019 and was instantly turned off from the native input lag along with other changes. Ultimate may be the biggest smash game but it was the most forgettable for me right along with smash 4, I didn't care about it and tournaments were boring.
No wonder you're just easy money to everybody else.

Your smash content is so 🔥 always, cant wait for your new ideas
The game is definitely not dead
I think the problem is people are used to live service, multiversus, new mortal combats, but Nintendo doesnt have that. They have ultimate as a game not a live service one. That why people liked the dlc characters it was more content. I think the next smash will be live service
Everyone saying that competitive ult is dying really dont know what tf they talking about
I got into xenoblade and fire emblem from this game and I don't regret it they're good games and after playing three houses and xenoblade 2 I completely understand why byleth got in along with pyra and mythra
Hot take that I like Smash 4 over Ultimate
Input delay, jumping changes, etc had me not like the feel of Ultimate
Project M was my favorite though
Smash 4 is so overrhated nowadays, just because ultimate took its place and brawl getting a cult following doesn’t mean smash 4 is now garbage

Well to be fair, smash ultimate has been out for 6 years. Normally at 6 years, games wouldn’t be nearly as popular as smash ultimate is.
Not discussing the Panda Cup and Smash World Tour as a major contributor to Smash Ultimate’s competitive downfall is bananas.
It's been almost 2 years since I touched this game. I would've played it more if it had content like All-Star mode. I lost interest in World of Light so fast. I want an Adventure mode that's more exciting, like Subspace. Having the Primids as playable characters would be cool.
Only reason why i started playing smash bros is because of sonic and joker
same
My problem with Ult is its single player modes and online, besides that it's my 2nd fav in the series. Also 15:04 "It also gave us a ton of Final Fantasy representation", didn't realize Final Fantasy only meant FF7...
The downfall of smash as I mindlessly put it on to combo for a few hours online
I feel like the game is less dying, more people hyper focusing on the negative parts bc it's old. That happened with every game: Melee, Brawl, and Sm4sh, as well as 64. Now, i agree the highs arent as high, but dead? Not even close.
No fun content other than just playing smash, shitty online, broken dlc ruined the fun of the competitive scene. Game’s dead no matter how many copies sold over the 6 years this game’s already been out
No
My main issues with Smash Ultimate from what I remember:
The game barely felt like an upgrade from Smash 3DS/Wii U.
"There's a saying: you either go out wit--"
No no, the saying is "you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain"
The online fucking sucks.
The End.
8:47 I think most people don't like the rng actually
What's the song that's playing in the background at 3:32
I like how it took 11 minutes to finally get the point of the "production", only for the points to be "I didn't like Byleth", some really bad drama (that is really bad, don't get me wrong), and tournament guidelines.
That mixed with the current top tiers of smash ultimate such as Sonic (who runs away the whole game) Game and watch (who plays the game for you) and a lot of other characters made people just lose interest in the game because playing against and watching those characters every single bracket was just not fun to most (This is coming from a Steve player)
Secondly 3 HUGE companies in the scene Panda Global, VGBootcamp and Beyond the Summit all shut down or took HUGE financial hits after a falling out between them in 2022/2023. (This is coming from someone who worked at Panda Global)
That's what I would say those are the REAL reasons Smash Ultimate is on a downfall because at this moment most of the casuals have kinda moved on since other things have come out plus this game being nearly 6 years old at this time and the only thing really keeping the game alive and in the public eye is the competitive scene which is dying off because of the reasons stated above.
(It didn't help that I already didn't have positive opinions of those franchises before Smash.)
The "Everyone is Here" hook looked nice on paper and for the roster, but what fun is a massive roster without interesting things to do with all the playable reps?
I wonder why a game that was announced to have no more updates is dying. It's almost like there's no new content to play or comment about.
game is fun but the moment i started playing online quickplay the whole table just flip upside down and made me stop playing it quickplay is just too toxic and laggy asf…
If this happened to SSBM before the release of SSBB, then does that cause the decline of SSBM, even if SSBM isn’t even dying even with those restrictions including at that time?
awesome video but i feel like a big reason also is the gameplay of steve, game and watch, and sonic in tourneys
I think that moreso falls under the meta stagnation that he alluded to in the video, and in my honest opinion it was more like the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. There were many things post-2020 that set things in motion that I won't really speak about due to the controversy (and it's a sour spot for me personally tbh)
But brawl had mk and icies and smash 4 had bayo, cloud, and diddy
