Full Metal Jacket should've been in #1. The drill instructor is probably one of the most memorable characters in movie history, and his insults are some of the funniest.
Harrison Ford was half dead from dysentery during the filming of Raiders of the Lost Ark. This was before he was supposed to engage in a whip duel with a turban-wearing bad guy while escaping Nazi assassins, and pleaded with Steven Spielberg "Can't I just shoot the fucker?" The resulting scene, with Indiana Jones seeing the crowd part to show the bad guy twirling his big swords - Dr. Jones tilts his head in exasperation, whips out his Colt revolver, and blows the bad guy away. Best scene in the movie.
"Were you born a fat, slimy, scumbag puke piece o' shit, Private Pyle, or did you have to work on it?" That's one of my most favorite quotes from that movie!
Guido Anselmi I was in basic and my drill instructor said to me "you are two Skittles away form holy fucking shit you and a car bomb are not the only thing that has blown up
The scene from Midnight Cowboy was indeed improvised. One of my professors in film school was the assistant director on that film (look up Terry Donnelly if you don't believe me) and mentioned that the street in which Hoffman was trying to cross was supposed to be locked down for filming, but an angry taxi driver got through and nearly hit him. Thus, Hoffman reacted in character and that scene was kept in the final cut.
Raiders of The Lost Ark, where Indy shoots the swordsman. It was supposed to a big elaborate fight with Indy and his whip versus the swordsman with his sword. Harrison Ford (along with the rest of the crew) caught dysentery and was horribly sick the day they were to film the scene. Apparently, he said to Spielberg (also sick), "If this were real, I'd just shoot the guy", and Spielberg agreed. It was so quick and on the spot, the actor playing the swordsman had no idea they were changing anything but reacted properly. Easily one of the greatest improvised scenes in movie history.
The scene where Leo fought a bear in The Revenant was completely improvised. They didn't even know there was a bear in the woods but Leo's masterful performance was so good that they incorporated it into the film. Directors really hate to shout "CUT" :-)
I don't think they realize how great Heath Ledger's improvisation was. He did it on an absolute whim because in the script the entire building exploded without a stop and they only had one chance to shoot the scene. When the detonations failed in the middle Ledger improvised until the explosions set off again. I personally think it should be #1 on this list.
+Naruko Uzumaki (Xzoo Uzuchia) Everyone else in the scene was just staring at eachother. Fucking brilliant. A few of them stared at the camera crew and motioned like "What the fuck is wrong with Johnny!?"
Tom Felton's line "I didn't know you could read" in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' was improvised. He had forgotten his actual line and made it up quickly. Which is really impressive for a 12-13 year old.
With the Joker, him fiddling with the detonator was actually because the explosives weren't supposed to stop. Thankfully he didn't break character and just ran with it.
Yup, the batteries in the detonator were acting weird. And something else a lotta folks don't know is that the building's destruction was all physical effects -- no CGI was involved. Ledger knew they only had one take to get the proper shot. So when something went wrong, he ran with it. As the old Irish proverb goes: "When you stumble, make it part of the dance."
Yeah, any real man in a dress wants to get out of that dress as soon as possible. So if the explosives didn't go off, he has to stay in the dress a little longer. But they should have had him get on a shorter bus.
@babserella It actually looks pretty obvious that it's not CG in that scene. That scene was shot in IMAX, you can clearly tell that was all real explosions
In the scene in Django Unchained where Leanordo DiCaprio's character smashes his fist on the table out of anger he accidentally breaks a glass with his hand. Instead of breaking off the scene he just calmly looks at his bloody hand and pulls out some of the glass shards which made it into the movie. The shocked expressions from Samuel Jackson in that moment was real.
Hell yea! He is exactly how military drill instructor would act. I have been in two boot camps and prior service boot camp. Navy and army. However, I vouch for army if anyone wants in the service.
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the scene at the end between Harry and Lucius, where Lucius said "Let's hope that Harry Potter will always be around to save the day," and Harry replied with "Don't worry. I will be," was all unscripted.
My fav is Django Unchained when Leonardo DiCaprio accidentally cut his hand bad on some glass and even though he started bleeding like crazy, he never broke character. He even smeared his bloody hand on Kerry Washington's face. Apparently he needed stitches, Why doesn't this man have an Oscar?
So, you're telling me R. Lee Ermey was in the movie for about 40 minutes, and that he improvised approximately half of his dialogue?... so roughly 20 minutes of improv, and he wasn't on the top of the list?... what's up with that?
Yes, I was expecting it to be there... but I see another video titled "Another Top 10 Improvised Movie Moments" in the sidebar... I hope it is there. lol
#1 should be from Star Wars - episode 5 "The Empire Strikes Back", when Leia says to Han "I love you", he was supposed to say "I love you too", but the scene wasn't working, so Harrison Ford said "I know" for one of the takes and that was the one used.
My personal favorite has to be: "I got a jar o' dirrrrt! I got a jar o' dirrrrrt!" ... The look on Orlando Bloom's face is priceless, does a quick look over at the director like 'What the Hell is he doing???' X'D
that reminds me of the end in dead man's chest. that was ofc the producers and writers thing but the expressions on the actors were real, forced improv lol.
GoodFellas funny how scene is definitely one of the best in the film, he shut that whole restaurant up in seconds you could hear a pin drop lol. Joe Pesci is one of the greatest actors, bringing such an intensity to his scenes.
True. Pesci is a genius. Witness how he upstaged DeNiro in Raging Bull: "You fuck my wife?" "Stop eatin' you fuckin' fat bastid!" He must have hung-out with a lot of Wiseguys because his portrayals of them are so perfect they're scary. Absolute genius.
DaBratlife Pesci just brings so much reality to a role...whether he's playing a plumber in a comedy ( Easy Money) or a gangster.I can watch any movie with him in it.Watch Eddie Murphy's standup " Raw" and tell me that's not a Joe Pesci character he portrays as the cocky little Italian guy who just saw Rocky.
Not a 100% improvisation really, but I love Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in LotR 2. While filming one of the shots where he was supposed to kick the uruk-hai helmet and cry out, Viggo broke his toe, and that shot stayed in the film. So his scream was totally real and purely emotional.
Awesome list! Every one of them classic performances! So glad you showed Aliens and Usual Suspects at the end, I was expecting them :) Only one you missed was Leo in Django, but great list nether the less!
Lord of the Rings the Two Towers. Aragorn felt guilt for letting the Orcs get to Merry and Pippen before they could save them. Pissed off, Aragorn kicks an orc hemet towards a camera and broke his toe on screen. That take is in the movie, and he turned the pain into performance. Pretty cool if you look it up.
I thought he broke something else and not his toe. Like for say, his ankle. I could be wrong but yea. Aragon, forgot the actual actor name, played that off really good.
theres also the scene in the first movie with Lurtz where he threw the knife at Aragorn. The actor apparently lost his grip on the REAL knife and Viggo brought his sword up just in time to deflect it
In the movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark" the scene where Indiana Jones in confronted by a large formidable sword wielding man. Harrison Ford was supposed to fight the man in a sword fight, but Ford improvised the scene by pulling his pistol from his belt, and simply shoots the man, even to the effect of some comic relief. This scene was left in that way. I think this example of improvised scenes should certainly be included in this list.
Knowing that some of these iconic scenes and Iconic film lines were actually improvised gives me more respect for the actors that portrayed the characters.
I do applaud Ray for staying in character during what was probably a very convincing "is Joe actually upset here? Should we stop rolling or something?"
Heath Ledgers joker and the hospital explosion. To think he had one shot. One take. And he somehow managed to inject a masterful moment of comedy that looked perfectly planned and timed. Finding out he “ad-libbed” that moment was mind blowing and demonstrative of his absolute brilliance in that role.
There's the famous line on "Star Wars", when princess Lea tells Han Solo she loves him, and he replies "I know". To the best of my knowledge, that was Harrison Ford's improvisation.
Also Mark Hamill's "You're lucky you don't taste very good" to R2-D2, which unfortunately was only found in some edits ... and left out of the Special Edition.
Wait, you mean Bill Paxton? 'Cuz in that case the best line for him in that film goes to the part where Ripley's talking about Newt. She's trying to convince him that - as a child - she's survived on her own. Then Hudson says, 'Why don't you put her in charge?' Lol. Just classic.
Blade Runner. Tears in Rain scene. That is the ultimate unscripted moment for me. Why? Because it gave so much more meaning to that movie, and honestly I think it tied it all together perfectly. What they originally had would have just made it another scifi movie, but that scene alone breathed life into the monstrous, murderous, insane, desperately wanting to live android.
Amazigh TheDesertWolf Also the scene in Indiana Jones where he shoot the crazy guy who wants to attack him with the swords. That's my personal favorite.
You won't be disappointed. Rutger Hauer plays a replicant , who needs to die before he's 30. He's pissed at this fact, and wants revenge for all replicants from the manufacturer. Last scene he describes all that he has seen in life, and the tragedy of early death. Mint !
It's neat that they put in Viggo Mortensen from the Two Towers at the end. When he kicked that helmet and screamed, he actually broke a couple of his toes. They had done a bunch of takes before that, but for that particular take he actually kicked it so hard it broke some toes. He then channeled the pain into that guttural scream of anguish. Peter Jackson decided that was the take, and then they sent him off to get his toes splinted.
For the amount of meaning the line contains, Harrison Ford's, _"I know,"_ line has to be number one. Two words carrying tons of meaning, completely solidifying the character as if concrete, and THE coolest thing ever said in cinema.
No. I remember the French castle scene, the Knights who say Ni, and the how do you know she's a witch scene. I need to watch it again to refresh my memory.
The Joker should be number 1!!! But my favorite is when he expects a ship to blow up and it doesn't. That was his true reaction and he just improvised the rest.
the unscripted part in lord of the rings where aragorn is kicking the helmet is something special because in real he broke one of his toes, but stayed in his role
I loved Viggo Mortensen's cry when he broke his toe in Two Towers and still kept his role.... ^^ From this list my favs are The Shining, Casablanca and Full Metal Jacket. A really good list, really!
DantheTobinMan The scene with the cannons on Duchman had to be delayed a bit, so Jonny took a chance. You can even see Orlando Bloom looking at director with wtf face. A lot of scenes from POTC were improvised. :-D
Pretty sure I read that the scene with Ledger in Batman went the way it did because the explosions in the hospital went wrong causing a lot of them to detonate later then they should have.
No Indiana Jones Raiders of the lost Ark? The scene where he shoots the guy chalenging him to a sword fight wasn't scripted. Harison ford was originally supposed to fight him back with a sword, but he was sick when they were shooting that part so he created the awesome gun shot instead of a sword fight. I am surprised there was no mention of that anywhere in this video.
There was actually a malfunction with the pyrotechnics with Heath Ledger's The Joker, apparently all of the explosives were supposed to detonate at once and he was scripted to get straight onto the bus without turning around and fiddling with the detonator, then the rest of the explosives went off and he got in the bus...brilliant acting, Nolan was impressed, and they didn't have to rebuild the structure to blow up again, which would have cost alot.
Actualy u dont build up building like that to be blown up in movie, u find building that is intended to be blown up and use it,.. but nice acting and improvisation nevertheless.
Oops, correct, I heard a myth they actually built a Hollywood structure that looked authentic on the outside, but was bare on the inside; Turns out they blew up a Brach's Candy factory, instead. But yeah lol, still a brilliant scene.
Actually that scene was 100% meant to go down like that. In the script and commentary, there is a call for a beat, a pause in the action, indicating when the explosion would go off so Ledger would be at a safe distance. None of it was improvised whatsoever.
I always liked Rutger Hauer in the movie Blade Runner. At the last part where he says " All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain ", that was made up by Rutger on set.
That is, possibly, the dopest monologue in cinema history. Question, I understand that "Time to die" was almost "Time to die, brother" because Harrison Ford's character was supposed to have been a replicant as well, how would you have felt if they pulled the trigger and made him one?
Pirates of the caribbean; I've got a jar of dirt. This wasn't a part of the script, he added it himself, so Keira's and Orlando's reactions are real in that scene.
What about the scene from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark were Indiana Jones shoots the guy with the giant sword after he twirls it around emphatically? That's gotta be up there
So much better improvisation than many of the ones shown in the video. The look on everyone's faces in that scene was genuine shock, and the swordsman hesitation to fall added a brief moment of tension and comedy. Easily one of my favorite parts of that movie.
Django Unchained, Leonardo DiCaprio's bloody hand after the glass shatters when he smashed his hand at the table. He just continued while the blood was running out, which was real and all stayed in character especially DiCaprio. And Heath Ledger's scene "Joker" at the hospital, I don't think it should have been om 10th place, more like Top 3s. They had only one take to make the bomb go off, at the last moment when he pressed the button to detonate the bomb it actually malfunctioned but, Nolan kept the film going and Heath Ledger improvised it and made it one of the top scenes. It was just perfect. It's my opinion.
I don't believe the remote actually malfunctioned. I think it wasn't so to go off until Ledger got onto the bus and it started driving off. He decided that it would have been Joker-like if he were to stop and turn around and play with the remote because he thought it malfunctioned. Also, they probably went over that scene a few times without the explosion.
Full Metal Jacket should've been in #1. The drill instructor is probably one of the most memorable characters in movie history, and his insults are some of the funniest.

R. Lee Ermey was masterful in FMJ. I don't think I've seen a more riveting performance from a non-professional actor.
THIS
100 times this.
That's bc he was just doing what he'd been doing for over a decade. It's easy to play yourself.

That scene actually captures the atmosphere of New York perfectly.

Raiders of The Lost Ark, where Indy shoots the swordsman. It was supposed to a big elaborate fight with Indy and his whip versus the swordsman with his sword. Jay Wilson Totally agree... I expected this to be in the top 3!!!
Jay Wilson I was thinking about that scene too
Jay Wilson I always thought it was because they needed to shorten the film
Nope, it's been discussed by Spielberg and Ford, among others, a bunch of times.
"You're so ugly you could be a modern art masterpiece" That line is the greatist instult I have ever heard. I nearly cried...

That's the one question we all ask ourselves.
Martin Sheen did a similar thing while filming the opening scenes of Apocalypse Now.
While its impressive that he didn't break character, that was a dick move towards Kerry Washington. Just saying.
Hylia's Hero Oh yeah i definitely agree with that. In fact if I was Kerry I would be pissed. But it was great for dramatic purposes
Totally agree
So, you're telling me R. Lee Ermey was in the movie for about 40 minutes, and that he improvised approximately half of his dialogue?... so roughly 20 minutes of improv, and he wasn't on the top of the list?... what's up with that?

oh yeah, ive heard about that.. also,i read somewhere liv tyler stabbed herself with a knife on accident.. (when getting on her horse?)
"You're gonna need a bigger boat!" The greatest one line improvisation in film history!
That certainly was an improvised shot.
Loved that scene.
That must have been very scarey
Wow, cant believe Joe Pesci's 'Funny How' was improv. Its one of the best scenes I have ever seen.
Really... nothing by Robin Williams on this list? Shameful.
robin williams could improV an entire movie and still make it a hit.
Don't feed it...
HeliRy you're hella right. ignore it....
I agree, a list like this almost demands Williams be in the top few.
Just asking, but what has Williams said that is memorable?
"Funny how" scares me
Fuck yeah lol
pirates of the carribbean, johnny depp's " I got a jar of dirt!" XD
Omg yes! when i heard that that part was improvised it made the confusion on everyone else's faces even more hilarious
Yea like...Its really good and catches his character aswell... why Mojo whyyy?
Knowing that some of these iconic scenes and Iconic film lines were actually improvised gives me more respect for the actors that portrayed the characters.
Seriously during the Goodfellas scene I just wanted her to shuttup! She kept interrupting the dialogue.
i know right?!?! thats literally the best moment of that movie and she ruined it with her too much talking about stuff we dont really care for :D
Yeah, I was excited to see that on there, but nope...can't hear the damn scene. lol
That is correct (read in Darth Vader voice)
how the fuck did they miss that one!
The best improvised scene is ofcourse the scene in Aliens where actor says: "Game over man... GAME FUCKING OVER!"
***** so was the "I know" from Han Solo in cloud city right before he was frozen.
Awesome ! " Time to die " ! LOL
Amazigh TheDesertWolf Also the scene in Indiana Jones where he shoot the crazy guy who wants to attack him with the swords. That's my personal favorite.
The hole damn speech?
... I need to find this movie.
You won't be disappointed.
Rutger Hauer plays a replicant , who needs to die before he's 30.
He's pissed at this fact, and wants revenge for all replicants from the manufacturer. Last scene he describes all that he has seen in life, and the tragedy of early death.
Mint !
"Well, one thing you won't like is that we don't serve fried chicken and watermelon on a regular basis here!"
9:22
Jackson: That was great, Viggo! I can feel your anger.
Mortensen: I'VE BROKEN MY BLOODY TOE!!
Jackson: Oh, right. We'll keep the shot anyway.
"Do you agree with our list?" "I don't care!" lol
django !! leonardo de caprio when he broked the glass by his hands ... and the blood was real !!! but no oscar awards !!!!
*broke*
maybe better that way
Oscars comity use to give a statue to some who never deserve it
Tommy Lee Jones simple "I don't care" from The Fugitive is fantastic as well.
My favourite scene.
Not to mention all the little bits too! "Oh, wow! Gee whiz! Look here!"
Stunned at the absence of Rutger Hauer's "Tears in Rain" monologue in Blade Runner. Unforgivable!
I came here just to see that one =P
watchmojo can be dumb like that...
That was unscripted????
TheBaconWizard Hauer rearranged some bits from the script and improvised the line "All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain."
Pirates of the carribeans IVE GOT A JAR OF DIRT!!!"Johnny depp"
I know I was waiting for it to be number one
Oh my god yes hHhaahaha
I totally forgot that was improved. WHY IS IT NOT ON THE LIST
You should ditch your ISP. Don't get a new one.
That should be number one.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)Princess Leia: I love you!Han Solo: I love you too! (Scripted)Harrison Ford: I know! (Ad-libbed)
I personally think "I got a jar of dirt! I got a jar of dirt!" is the best improvised movie moment.
That was improv?
Zane Harrison Well, the part where he fell down the stairs was, I think...
That is hilarious XD
Star Wars, Harrison Ford, "I love you"
"I know"
What about Monty Python and the Holy Grail??? "There are some who call me.... Tim."
I really like that movie, but don't remember that. What scene is that from?
Remember they encounter an enchanter? He was doing explosions and whatnot?
No. I remember the French castle scene, the Knights who say Ni, and the how do you know she's a witch scene. I need to watch it again to refresh my memory.
+mountainguyed67 then it has been too long since you saw the movie, my good friend Biggus Dickus
Hahaha that was epic
The Joker should be number 1!!! But my favorite is when he expects a ship to blow up and it doesn't. That was his true reaction and he just improvised the rest.
Number 1: Leonardo DiCaprio - "Django Unchained".
the unscripted part in lord of the rings where aragorn is kicking the helmet is something special because in real he broke one of his toes, but stayed in his role
it was not much but it gave this scene the extra kick
"Do you agree with our list?"
"I don't care!"
Perfect sentiment of how the Mojo writers actually feel
But... But... But Captain Jack Sparrow has a jar of dirt...
I prefer "Now... Bring me that horizon." at the end of Movie 1.
That was exactly what I was thinking
***** yes, it was
Your profile pic fits perfectly with what you said XD
***** I thought it was sand not dirt.
If one more person tells me that, "You talkin' to me" is from the Godfather, I'm gonna go nuts.
Who the fuck said that? haha
luckily never heard that one
that was my favourite line from The Godfather.
....I KID I KID!!!
I loved Viggo Mortensen's cry when he broke his toe in Two Towers and still kept his role.... ^^
From this list my favs are The Shining, Casablanca and Full Metal Jacket.
A really good list, really!
"I got a jar of dirt" should have been on the list :-D
TRUE TBH
That was improvised?
DantheTobinMan
yes Johnny out of nowhere yelled 'I'VE GOT A JAR OF DIRT AND GUESS WHAT'S IN IT' and u can see the cast's surprised expressions
OMG, that is AWESOME. I think my life now has meaning xD
Harrison Ford also improvised the "I know" line in Empire Strikes Back.
Ludden
This is the one I would suggest. If we're talking about the most memorable ad-libbed quotes this would be my #2 pick behind Casablanca.
***** Diarrhea did something good for once, hooray for diarrhea! ... that sounded awkward...
Nah, Indiana Jones?????
Never play hide and seek with Jack Nicholson.
yeah, even at a young age, he took a "shining" to playing it...
Umm, exCUse you! Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets:
"Let's hope Mr. Potter will always be around to save the day,"
"Don't worry, I will be,"
That was impressive improv by Daniel.
***** I agree. These muggles just chose not to use it >__
fun fact: on 9:22 of the video, Viggo Mortensen screams because he broke his toe when he kicked that helmet, but he never broke character
He used that real toe pain for the scene.
Full Metal Jacket, awesome movie.
Catnip Everdeen Only the basic training scenes and " me love you long time"....Thanks for sampling 2 Live Crew.
hes a big boy he knows what he said Funny how? like a clown do I amuse You? such a badass line
I agree
In the second Harry Potter when Malfoy's dad says "I hope MR. Potter will always be around to save the day" Daniel improved "Don't worry. I will be"
The same movie, during that Polyjuice scene, Tom Felton improved his famous "I didn't know you could read" line.
Ya, i looked it up after i posted that cause i wanted to make sure I was right and I found that out.
"I love you" "I know"
How could they leave that one out. SOmetimes I think the people at Mojo have no love for Star Wars =/
Another Best Movie Improvs list that completely leaves out Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now.
6:33 Finally, I've been waiting for this one!!!
I always liked Rutger Hauer in the movie Blade Runner. At the last part where he says " All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain ", that was made up by Rutger on set.
What have you got to lose? You know? You come from nothing you're going back to nothing, what have you lost? Nothing!
Fantastic lines from a fantastic movie and actor!
That's gotta be up there
Totally. Ipovised because HF was sick and the diretor said oh hell just shoot him.
Great
So much better improvisation than many of the ones shown in the video. The look on everyone's faces in that scene was genuine shock, and the swordsman hesitation to fall added a brief moment of tension and comedy. Easily one of my favorite parts of that movie.
Yes! Was about to comment about this! It's such a genius improvisation
cccn4eva
They did 'Another improvised movie moments' list
Man Humphrey Bogart was one hell of a great actor
You’re just figuring that out. You must be very young.
Humphrey Bogart man! What a legend!
Shame he died young. Imagined how many movies will he make when he is still alive
The 2 jive guys in Airplane ad-libbed their stuff.
they practiced with Barbara Billilngsly first
bmo beetle bailey said
Sorry, I don't speak jive. lol
Called Flying High in other countries incl Australia
HOW COULD YOU NOT HAVE "I know." -Han Solo. THAT IS BETTER THEN HALF THE ONES ON THE LIST.
Agreed
oh yeah
I don't believe the remote actually malfunctioned. I think it wasn't so to go off until Ledger got onto the bus and it started driving off. He decided that it would have been Joker-like if he were to stop and turn around and play with the remote because he thought it malfunctioned. Also, they probably went over that scene a few times without the explosion.
"YOU OWE ME FOR ONE JELLY DONUT"
Robbie Lawson SIR YES SIR
Holy Jesus………what is that…what the fuck is that!!?!?
