Imagine the 19 year old Franz Schubert sitting at his desk writing such great masterpieces. Who wouldn't like to watch the moment when his hand wrote down what his mind had imagined?. When you close your eyes you can almost see Franz Schubert smiling at some parts.
Poor Schubert... he taught during the day, wrote music at night. When did he sleep? He was so poor he sold songs for very little money. He had to sneak in to hear Beethoven’s concerts. Yet he wrote over 900 pieces of music! How?
Probably quite boring. Schubert would have stayed still by his piano, playing the melody all over again to get it right, or trying to transcribe the clear idea as fast as possible before the inspiration is gone. When I compose pieces I make hundreds and thousands of revisions and dozens of back-up copies on my computer. It takes up hours, often days or weeks when put together. Now doing that with only your piano, mind, paper and pen is even harder, and does require a genius. I have it easy when I can just play the synthesised orchestra on the computer and listen to it to make sure all is correct.
Beautifully woven movements. What wonderful melodies from Schubert’s imagination. How excellently rendered by this well prepared orchestra and leader. How did we survive without UA-cam? Can you imagine our parents, listening to this in scratchy hi fidelity mono years ago?
It was the 2nd “record” of Schubert that I bought,~ 1954. Soon after I bought his 8th symphony. And it remains my 2nd favorite of his symphonies. I still have the vinyls.
The conductor along with the orchestra have brought such nice melodious music of the composer. All very beautiful coordinated playing by the musicians with their instruments under the guidance of the conductor who was very expressive. Thanks for the peace with music.
Schubert's "Tragic" Symphony was the only one I hadn't heard until recently; how it eluded me most of my life is a mystery, it's certainly not because of disinterest. Now I'm treated to excellent performances of this and also the First Symphony given at the same concert! I just learned that the opening of the Fourth was inspired by the opening of Haydn's "Creation", but it also reminds me of the beginning of Edmund Rubbra's Fourth Symphony. It's a fine symphony that shows how Schubert's music had matured in the three years since his First Symphony, more secure and with greater cohesion and dramatic flow. Maestro Orozco-Estrada has the measure of it, and the FRSO play wonderfully as usual.
The 4th Symphony is a great improvement from the 3rd. In this symphony he combines the best elements from Haydn and Beethoven with his own signature that makes him one of the greatest composers in history.
@@roseevaris9110 I saw this orchestra live with Maestro Orozco-Estrada, and again a couple of years later with its new conductor, Maestro Altinoglou. It has lost some of its brilliance. The same thing happened with Wiener Symphoniker, with and without Orozco. This conductor makes a huge difference wherever he goes.
This is an excellent performance of one of my favorite symphonies! I think it demonstrates Schubert’s rapidly developing skill in constructing architecture for his melodies. This has good audio, even coming from my little ipad speakers.
First class! Both the performance and Schubert’s composition! All of Schubert’s symphonies are done well by this conductor and orchestra. I hope Maestro Orozco-Estrada brings this to Houston!
Echt erstklassig!
This quaint symphony, rather coincidentally, sounds so much like younger Beethoven, because, like Him, Schubert was deeply inspired by the Messrs. Haydn and Mozart, and found his voice by channeling through their tones of orchestration. The sforzandos in the first movement bring me PTSD of Beethoven’s 1st. And not enough has been said about the finale! Schubert apparently dubbed the nickname himself, and who are we to minimalize the composer’s feelings of his work. And that second movement… the first movement seems like a mere stepping stone to that gorgeous shade of A-flat that Schubert so loved.
Very superb Awesome performance of Schubert fourth within a delicious romanticism that characterized his music. Bravo for the orchestra and his conductor!!
This performance is very good indeed. I would like to second the earlier comment of Peter Bauer below -- I have been looking at a number of performances by this orchestra on You Tube, and the personnel often changes -- players appear, disappear, and appear again. Not just the first chairs, either. On the other hand, it's a wonderful orchestra and seems always to sound good despite these changes. For those who like Schubert I recommend the superb performance of this orchestra (also on You Tube), conducted by Antonello Maricorda, of Schubert's Sixth Symphony, the "little" C major. We must always remember Schubert's age. He was 19 when he composed this Fourth Symphony and 20 when he composed the Sixth.
This sounds great on my little ipad! By contrast, Harnoncourt’s piece sounds scratchy, with high pitched overtones. That’s due mainly to the audio techniques having improved so much over the years, and also my hearing has not. Still, I love Harnoncourt’s interpretation of Schubert & Mozart.
the hr-sinfonieorchester performed this schubert symphony on dec13. the next evening his 9th symphony was offered. what i find surprising is the fact that in both performances a totally different group of musicians played. is this common that orchestras have (at least) two instrumentalists per chair?
Pretty nice piece of music. The way the Fourth movement ends is pretty amazing. I do kind of find the way the first movement ends to abrupt. Nevertheless, I like it. I like it when a piece of music in C minor ends in C major, which was a very common practice.
