Love this video, my favorite! His balloon under his Fathers and Mothers umbrellas, parents. Then under the nuns umbrella, religion. Then policemen on horses, law and order. Then his umbrella going to the little girl and hers doing the same, relationships. Then the balloons (our souls) flying away losing our childhood. Then the end, all of the balloons taking him away. Life!

Ian didn’t need to sing this song it’s perfect the way it is. It turned out beautiful that’s why everyone loves it. Evolution of music is awesome. I’m sure Ian would have loved this. I know I would if I were him.
Listen to the single verse that is audible on the Joy Division version done live at Birmingham University (from "Still") and tell me if you feel the same way. I think the singing has got much more passion, and that it would've been a much better song with Ian Curtis singing it. Not to knock New Order, I'm a fan, but for this song in particular I can't agree that this is the perfect rendition.
This is the version I remember from 1980 on the juke box at the Joker , Whitesands,Dumfries. So, many thank-you's for putting on here. What an era. As ever, taped onto a ferric C90 for posterity.

I think the balloons represent the heart / joy of one’s life and sometimes others wish to take that joy from us. Is best if we let it go when we need to move on, because that joy will always comes back as it is shared with others.
wow.... This is a powerful lyric video. The choice of Red Balloon for the footage fits Ceremony like a glove. You have my respect and my congratulations for creating a stupefying masterpiece. Brava!

I've never seen this. Thought I saw every version, including Radiohead and now Echo and the Bunnymen. This is certainly one of NO's best songs, and JD's.
I heard ceremony in 82 in my as a teenager at college in Wellington such a beautiful piece , How I was so disillusioned' with New Order seeing them live' at the Varsity Hop that year, coming on late with poor sound quality. However this video is 'stunning' appears to be kodak chromed' as the footage is from the late 5o's early 60's in Paris.
Just popped into my head this seems to have a similar theme as Love will Tear us Apart of cycles repeating themselves in a relationship where that one lacked any hope this seems to have been more about breaking that cycle once and for all. Maybe Ian Curtis had real hope or was committed to his own demise. The arc of Joy Division into New Order is encapsulated in this song,

Absolutely adore this song, I get something different from it every listen, sadness, joy, regret , love and hope ..
A masterpiece
This is why events unnerve me
They find it all, a different story
Notice whom for wheels are turning
Turn again and turn towards this time
All she asks is the strength to hold me
Then again the same old story
World will travel, oh so quickly
Travel first and lean towards this time
Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown
Heaven knows, it's got to be this time
Watching her, these things she said
The times she cried
Too frail to wake this time
🎸🎸🎸
Oh I'll break them down, no mercy shown
Heaven knows, it's got to be this time
Avenues all lined with trees
Picture me and then you start watching
Watching forever

Watching love grow, forever
Letting me know, forever
