Wow, you have an amazing lavender patch! It's huge!! I need to try this, mine is outside and was just covered with snow 😔. I wonder if you can propagate with herbs too? Have you tried it? Can't wait to hear if it worked! Thanks guys!!
Hi Ryan! 👋 Thank you for saying that and for bingeing our channel! Allison is the editing guru and we really appreciate you saying that. There is a lot that goes into it, so thank you! 😉
Hi Talia! 👋 Great questions. We did our best to change the water out about every other day, so every two days. Each time it was a complete change of the water. Hope that helps and thank you for watching! 👍😎
I've taken cuttings for White Buddleia and Hydrangea's and made a video on these about 3 years ago. Also took cuttings for Spirea, Lavender and Hebe's.
@@SpokenGarden It is fun and rewarding. I made a new video on the 14th about my Hebe cuttings that I took in 2017/18 and how they've developed since then. The parent plant can be seen right at the end :)
@@SpokenGarden I find it is very rewarding when they survive and flourish for many years. I also grow and breed pepper plants and have some interesting varieties. Some of the hybrid fruits can be seen on my channel homepage header on the right. These are Bell x Ramiro 'pointed pepper', Ramiro x Jalapeno and Bell x Jalapeno :)
Thank you for sharing this. I see from the comments that your cuttings in water did best! I’m growing some in soil, but would love to try the water method. Will you do (or have done) an update on how the lavender is doing?
Hi LittleForestOwl! 👋 Thanks for watching. That's great you are growing your own cuttings. WooHoo! We did have updates to our cuttings and they are: - Day 56: ua-cam.com/video/EUWye_LenVk/v-deo.html - Day 72: ua-cam.com/video/habjd7uqZow/v-deo.html - and Day 93: ua-cam.com/video/0xRioXM3y5w/v-deo.html We hope these are also helpful and good luck with your cuttings! 😃
Hi there! Good question. We have never grown anything in Cambodia, but.... definitely check your hardiness zone (there is likely an approximate zoning there to the UDSA hardiness zones). If it's above zone 9 or 10, then it probably won't grow there. Also, they like really well draining soil full of sand and/or rock, with very little clay. And they like to grown in more arid and dry conditions. Think Mediterranean climate. If you can duplicate that where you live in Cambodia, then you should be able to grow it. Thanks for watching!
Hi Kat! 👋 The water-cuttings rooted the best for us with 50% rooting. We only had 1 cutting root out of 6 for the soil-cuttings. That's great you have some decent cuttings! Yay! If you do place them in water to root, make sure to change the water every day or two so the water doesn't get stagnate and keeps fresh for your cuttings. Good luck and definitely let us know how it goes! 😄
Hi Tracy! 👋 Sorry we haven't gotten back to you yet. These results were for Day 72 and here is the link to the video: ua-cam.com/video/habjd7uqZow/v-deo.html Thank you for watching and let us know if you have any questions. 😉
@@kathagen3908 Thats fantastic about your water cuttings! Woohoo! Sorry to hear about the soil cuttings. Trial and error.... maybe give it another try and see what happens. 😁👍
Thanks Robert! We monitor the cuttings water needs every day. It's a combo of the if the soil looks dry and the weight of a dry or wet pot. Once you thoroughly water the pot you can get a feel for what that weighs and then check against that. Hope that helps! Thank you for your comment and stay safe.
Hi Bell Fonte! 👋 Great question, and yes, the lavender cuttings do need sunlight, but not direct, intense sunlight until you start to see roots developing that are at least 1-inch long. This is so the cuttings aren't more stressed than they already are. Make sure to change out your water (if you are starting them in water) every day or other day so it doesn't get stagnant. Hope this helps and thank you for watching! 👍😊
Hi Jess! 👋 Thank you for watching and very happy it was helpful. Are you taking cuttings? We have three more videos for lavender cuttings in our Quarantined Gardeners series; day's 56, 72, and 93. Hope those are helpful as well. 😃
Hi Chanelle! 👋 It is possible for you to do this, but you will need to pinch off the flower buds so the plant will get the message that it should root and not flower. You can do this either before or after you take each cutting, but definitely remove any flower buds. Good luck and let us know how it goes! Oh, and thank you for watching. 😃
Hi Nancy! 👋 Thanks for watching. 😃 Yes, our cuttings did root and they are now thriving out in our garden, in our terraced garden area. That's sooo exciting that you have a greenhouse coming. Yay! We hope you get lots of use and enjoyment from it. 😉👍
Thank you for your simplistic and detailed approach to many gardening questions - we live it in the UK. We followed your advice and purchased the hand pruners from Corona. Can you please show us when and how to prune gaura. Fiascos and salvia plants as well as taking successful cuttings. Thank You - stay safe and well. Quenrede and Meyrick Price Berkshire England.
Hi Meyrick! 👋 Thank you for watching and your comments. 😄 That's great you purchased the Corona hand pruners! We love ours. Easy to use and maintain, and....they do a fantastic consistent job of cutting. Can't ask for much more than that in hand pruners. 😉 We aren't familiar with "gaura", but it will grow in our area. Fun! Our American Horticultural Society reference book says to take softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in the summer. Hope that helps! We did a video on taking Salvia cuttings, for your reference. Thanks again for watching and you also stay safe. 😄👍💪
Hi bhadz100!! 👋🏼👋🏼 Thank you for asking. We had overall good results and we ended up transplanting the cuttings. Not all of the cuttings rooted, but a majority did and there should be a video after this in this series showing us transplanting them. Hope that answers your question and thank you for watching and for being here. 👍🏼😉😊
@bhadz100 @bhadzThe water cuttings did fine. About 75% of the water cutting rooted, if we remember right. The second or third video we did on these should talk about how long rooting took. The follow up lavender videos would be part of the QG series in 2020.
Hi Danita! 👋 Thank you for watching and for asking your question. There could be some small differences between different lavender's to take cuttings, but most lavender can have cuttings taken from semi-soft/semi-hard stems that have no flowers on their tip. You want to take your stem cuttings during mid-to late summer from the newest growth you can find. Hope that answers your question and we hope you take lots of lavender cuttings to make new lavender plants. 😉
So far the cuttings in soil are showing the most promise. As of yesterday, the cuttings in water haven't grown roots yet. We have read that rooting can take up to 6-7 weeks, so keep your fingers crossed.
Spoken Garden Thanks. We will have to exercise our patience when 'spoken garden'. I check several times per day, and my husband told me "Roma will not build in one day."
All good things take time, right? 😁 We are working on a Part 3 to show the rooting of the watering cuttings and also to try out a sandy-soil mix to see if they root more easily. Are you rooting any lavender cuttings?
Spoken Garden When I prune the lavender, I take the cuttings and root them, but they all died. And I know why, 'cause they are not healthy At the first place. But I thought I'm gonna throw them away, I might as well just take the chance. Since they're all died and I am angry. So I bought two big pots with flower bloom. And 4 small pots young lavender. I managed to kill a small pot. The rest of them so far. Ok. This is the 3rd month of me into gardening. Similar as you, i started gardening after pandemic. Of course, I can see you guys are much advanced than me. However, I'm very glad I get into a new hobby. I spent about four hours a day into my plants.
Hi Mary. That's exciting you are planning to take lavender cuttings. Yay! Thank you for asking, but we aren't planning on selling our plants. We have a front yard project where we need about 6+ lavender plants to get it started and take out a strip of grass. Where are you planning to plant your new lavender plants?
Wow...embarrasses to say I didn’t know that I could even do this. 😬 thank you for all the details so I can try this too. ❤️

What is the best season to get the cuttings?
Does it need sunlight while in water or in soil?

My lavender is only starting to bud flowers, can I still do this?
