  • Learn how to plant lavender cuttings today, on day 93. We are planting lavender cuttings we propagated by cuttings from a previous episode. Our lavender 🌿 cutting experiment is moving into a new phase. 😲👍
    *This is an updated video from the first version.
    Watch today's episode to see how well our cuttings rooted (spoiler 😲, not all of them rooted), see how we planted them, and what we planted them in. Definitely leave any questions and comments below about how we planted our cuttings, what soil we used, and if you have had any luck taking and then transplanting your lavender cuttings.

    There are many natural rooting hormones that will help with new root development. You may have some if them in your own home or yard! Aloe vera gel, cinnamon, aspirin, acv, and honey, to name a few. 🌞

      Hi Nah! 👋 Thank you for watching and for your comment. We have been meaning to get back to you. Sorry for the delay. These all sound like great alternatives to using our man-made rooting hormone. We wonder, if you have tried these yet? We might make a new video to try these on different cuttings to see what works for us. Thanks again for watching and for this fun idea! 😉👍

    I always use soil "MIX" which has no dirt and allows the roots to easily sprout, allows air & avoids rotting the cuttings. If you still use soil, I add a lil oxygen Peroxydide in my water (secret of gardners)

      Hi SC! 👋 That's great you use soilless medium for your cuttings. 👍 It definitely helps plants develop roots. We haven't used hydrogen peroxide (hoping that's what you were referencing) added to water when watering our plants yet, but that could be a great idea for a future video to run an "experiment". Awesome! Thanks for commenting and watching! 😃

    I love seeing your progress! I’m going to start some lavender cuttings in water this week to see what happens. Did you keep the cuttings in a greenhouse? And if I don’t have a greenhouse what environment do you recommend is best?

    • @SpokenGarden
      @SpokenGarden  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Lisa! 👋 Great questions and thank you for watching! 😃 That's exciting you are going to start your very one lavender cuttings. Woohoo! We had soooo much fun on our lavender cutting experiments. For us, the water rooting was the way to go to. Good choice! We had ours in our diy greenhouse, as you probably saw. If you don't have a greenhouse, you will need to place them in partial shade for most of the day. Make sure to keep any temperature and heat stress minimal for them so they can just concentrate on rooting for you. If your outside temperatures get lower than 55 degrees F at night, bring them inside and them place them back outside during the day. Low stress on the cutting is key, so keep water changed every day or every other day, and watch outside temps and heat where your cuttings are located so they aren't getting baked or scorched during the day. Have fun and let us know how it goes. 😄

    • @SpokenGarden
      @SpokenGarden  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Janet! 👋 Thank you for watching and saying that. 😊 For the cuttings in water, we try to change out all the water every other day or so. This is so the water stays fresh and doesn't go stagnate, which can lower the chances of our cuttings actually rooting and keep growing. Hope that helps and thank you for commenting!

    Neato. I have a couple of questions, and I apologize in advance if this was already covered: For the cuttings grown in water, did you add any sort of plant food or fertilizer to the solution or is it just H2O? My second question is, what were the other environmental conditions in which the cuttings were stored such as, indoors/greenhouse, full or partial sun, artificial lamps, etc...

    • @SpokenGarden
      @SpokenGarden  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Chompachangas! 👋 Thank you for watching and no problem on your questions. We didn't treat the water cuttings with anything. Just plain water in a clear glass jar. 😁 The cuttings were placed in our greenhouse under local conditions of partial sun (shading from double-poly sheeting) and we used no heat-strips or heaters at all. It was mid-June at the time of this recording so it was still around 50 F degrees at night and day time temps were anywhere from 68-80. We watered the soil cuttings as needed and refilled the water cuttings about everyday. Hope that helps answer your questions. 😃👍

    Hello there, complicated question: 1)I live in the San Francisco East Bay which is zone 9B. 2)I bought a "leggy" lavender with a lot of "hard wood". 3)It's not doing well, so I need to do a late summer/almost Autumn emergency propagation. That being said, is there any way of using the hard wood stems? Do I need to shave about a cm of the proximal part of the stem to expose the cambium layer (similar to camellia grafting prep. work)? I have to use the "water method", as placing it in soil would be a lot of watering discipline. I just don't have the time, as I work in the emergency ambulance field. also, everything dries out in the area really fast. ~Henry~

    How long did it take before the roots to show? How long between cutting start and repot was it? I’m trying my hand at lavender propagation...have my own experiment going, but not sure what’s standArd speed for rooting

    • @SpokenGarden
      @SpokenGarden  4 роки тому

      Hi Chelsea! 👋 Very exciting you are branching out (garden pun intended, 😄) and experimenting with your lavender cuttings. We started seeing roots grow with cuttings in water around 5 to 6 weeks ( we know, that is sooo long, right!) It must have been around 7 to 8 weeks after starting the cuttings when we actually potted them in our native soil. From some info out there we saw that it would take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks to start to see roots, but like Joanne mentioned, there is soo much different info out there that it's hard to find where to start. We would say start simple with water, and see where it takes you. Our cuttings were in our DIY greenhouse so they weren't in direct sunlight and we tried to keep the temp steady at at least 50F, but when we were rooting our water cuttings, night temps were still around 40 to 45F. If you do go the water route, make sure to change the water every day or every other day so the water stays fresh and doesn't go stagnate. Good luck and give us updates when you start to see roots. Yay! Exciting! And thank you for watching. 💚💪😃

      Hi Zoe! 👋 Thank you for watching and great question. We planted them individually in their own pots so they can focus on growing by themselves with less competition for water, soil, nutrients, and sunlight. Hope that helps and answers your question. Hi Greg!!👋🏼👋🏼 We made this series right at the start of the lock downs in 2020 and continued on to make them for a whole year. After we were able to again venture out into society later in 2020, we changed the "Quarantined Gardener" into "Spoken Garden Dailies or SGD's" to continue for the rest of the year, as we wanted to still show what we were doing in our garden every day and be helpful to other gardeners out there. 😊😀

    Can I propagate in water from a flower?

    • @SpokenGarden
      @SpokenGarden  3 роки тому

      Hi Ruby! 👋 Good question. Technically, maybe, but the plant is in it's reproductive cycle (flowering), so any root, leaf, or stem growth will be minimal to nonexistant. If, for example, you had leaves on the flowering stem cutting and then removed the flower, then you would have a regular stem cutting. But from just a lavender flower stem with only the flowers at the tip, most likely no rooting will happen. Really, with this, you would have a cut flower in water. Now, there isn't anything that we have found to say this wouldn't work if you added some rooting hormone to the water to induce rooting on a cut flower, but we haven't done an exhaustive search on this and haven't tried this, specifically. Might be worth a shot and see what happens. 😲 Thank you for watching and commenting! 👍😃
