A better way of doing this (and also the way every video games use) is by using materials and shaders, it's way more optimised, you can animate it more easely and it's more modulable. The vast majority of vfxs you see in games and movies are made using shaders, a lot of tutorials are avaible on youtube.

3:03 Tip:
If you switch your view type to wireframe/xray mode you wont need to delete vertices multiple times and there will be no leftovers
