Does this video make sense? The idea is to practice exercises that are specific enough that if you don't maintain absolute focus, you won't be able to execute the exercise accurately i.e. mistakes = lack of focus. For instance, playing something in all 12 keys with a metronome at a tempo that is attainable yet challenging. If you mess up, it's most likely because, for a split second, you started thinking about something other than the task at hand.
What other strategies, techniques, and exercises do you us to stay focused?

Jeff Schneider when i practice more than 1 hour at a time, i like to change the exercise/thing im practicing after about 25-30 min, to prevent getting bored and stop practicing, like changing from scales to chords or different technics

Thanks for for the clarification Jeff! I was kind of following what you were trying to say in the video, but this comment helped me make sure I got what you were trying to say.

Hey Jeff, I have a similar question but about a different situation. I don't have a full musical training but I play with a small orchestra and the combination of reading music, keep time and having distracting thoughts create some nervousness that leads me to mistakes or deconcentration. I know that the secret to everything is: Practice, but my question is if there are some keys to stay focus in an orchestra situation (with the music sheet, the director, etc). Salutes, great channel man!

I am loving these videos, man! Could you do one with how to structure your practice time? Like how to create a daily/weekly practice routine?

In early days of GIT when still using the original Howard Roberts materials they were geared at learning to control turning focus on and off. Howard said as musician very important to be cause to control focus when playing. Real simple explanation all our lessons had a time limit printed on the top of the paper to set a timer to. When the timer went off we we're suppose to stop working on the assignment whether we were done or not. As days went on the timings got shorter. The idea was you want to finish so you realize your need to focus more to get more done. Eventually you get to point of controlling your focus, not only when practicing, but when playing tunes, when improvising, when doing anything important to you. Kenny Werner "getting into the zone" is similar just no time limits involved

While i most definitely agree with the root of what you are saying, i have a suggestion. Ive studied piano intensely for the past 16 years, and one of the biggest things teachers have drilled into my brain, is you have to be creative in your practicing. If you are creative, you are mentally engaged. Metranome practice works to an extent but easily implements really harmful methods. While you may be present, you arent really focusing on the musicality of what your playing, and often not focusing on technigue or avoiding tension which then leads to injury (trust me i know, i have learned the hard way it isn't about having perfect notes if you're tense). There are a lot of really good techniqes to use, just dont use any one exclusively, make sure to always be mentally engaged. Listening to your pieces before you sit down and creating a plan is the biggest thing. Make sure to record yourself and notice what you don't like.

I don't get it how to get concentrated while playing an instrument when some people you know keep trying to get your attention, and others you don't, keep asking you if they can record or don't ask at all thank God, but put the camera on you like you are really good. Just expecting they enjoy the moment, nothing else.

My problem is I can think about a lot of things and still be with the metronome...

Yes. I agree with the root of what he is saying, but PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU do not just only use the metranome to practice. It should be a once in a whole thing, not an Everytime you practice thing, which is what most students mistakenly do. There is a lot of research out there on practice methods and the metranome is one you have to be wary if
