Stop Fighting with Kerf and Offset with a Few Simple Tricks

  • Every cut produces a kerf and knowing how to deal with this kerf when trying to mate different pieces of material together can prevent wasted material and frustrated users.
This video skips the discussion about how to find your kerf as that's been covered many times over in other videos. This is the next step of how to apply that kerf finding and use it to your advantage.
    ******
Editors note: at 7:38 I reference setting the kerf to 0 to return to "true to size" which is not technically accurate. I should have said to default or stock size which most saved projects would be using if you haven't introduced kerf before. So by default you're losing 1/2 your kerf on each side of your cut as the beam traces the centerline.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nice video! straight to the point. You did pique my interest though... t 7:38 you said if you wanted to cut "true to size" shapes you leave your kerf offset at zero. In my mind, isn't that running your laser beam directly over the line that would need to be cut, resulting in parts that are undersized by 1/2 of the laser kerf? Maybe I'm just splitting hairs here? Interested in your thoughts!

You are 100% correct. I should have said return to default size or whatever you're used to for your projects. By default you're losing 1/2 the kerf per side which is why we're able to run the kerf test templates with a 0 offset and get a reading of what the average kerf is.
Poor choice of word on my part unfortunately.

Really useful video, thanks for posting. Will definitely try this. In the case of laser veneer marquetry I’m fining I get much less burning on the underside. Have you had any experience doing this and if so any suggestions of a good masking material to prevent burn marks on the veneer? Thanks again

I've found blue tape is about the best option for this. Just butt the tape strips instead of overlap so you get a consistent cut (overlap may require more power). Also having air assist on helps greatly with this. It's been a long time since I've done any real marquetry work unfortunately but I'd love to get back into it.

Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into these. This video was very well explained, and it was easy to see how to apply the knowledge to my own projects. Keep up the excellent work brother!

How do you have version 1.6.00? Mine shows that it's up to date on version 1.5.01. Is that a beta version?

I believe in the last video he said he was a beta tester for Lightburn

Thanks, that really helped me with finger joints that sometimes are looser than I wanted. I like my finger joints to hold the material intact before I apply the glue.

As @thesplinteredfinger noted this is a very early beta that I had for testing a fix from 1.5 before the 1.5.01 patch was released. Just a timing thing really and there isn't much in my build that isn't part of yours at the moment.
