This reminds me of track armor. In WW2, some tankers decided to weld spare tracks onto the front of their tanks to aid in protection. From what I am aware of it only overburdened the supsensions with extra weight and provided little in terms of extra protection since tracks are relatively thin steel compared to the actual armor and there was not enough space to protect against HEAT rounds.

Chain links are mainly empty space. The obvious way to make it better would be to use an epoxy resin to bind the chain instead of just welding some bits here and there. Put the chain in a mould and pour resin over it. That would help dissipate the energy far more efficiently, and provide extra rigidity to individual chain links. Not that it's likely to stop rifle rounds anyway.

Couldve forged it into a damascus steel blend and tried that. I think the lack of full cohesion between the pieces caused alot of weakness in places. This weakness is the reason for plates not being "multihit" rated and being worthless after the first shot.

When he said weld I knew it would've been weak. Get hit enough and the whole thing would come apart. The best way to get those metals together is to black smith it, heat it, and hit it until everything becomes one block of metal, and then heat it as high as you can. Then dip it into water. Sucker should be hard as titanium.
