hai zac bulids, your project is wonderfull.💪 keep up spirit to share other sound systems, your creation is usefull for me because my hobby is make speaker too,. my last creation is mini bluetooth speaker using PVC water pipe but still not perfect and litte bit annouying sounds. although i do trial 3 weeks with 8 ohm 5 watt speaker. so i hope get many inspirations from yours to make my creation better next time. if you have suggestions, let’s me know. 😊
I prefer magnet to magnet as it's self centering, and if you use north on one diagonal and south on the other, you can make the facia repel if it's the wrong way up, which could help if the drivers are positioned off centre
2 Tips from an audio engineer: you dont want magnets near the speaker cause the magnetic field will interfer with the coil. and those wooden grills are likely to produce some high frequent distortion. Make them thiner or better leave them out! Anyways great design!
The grills are going to cause all kinds of distortion, not just high frequency. Ideally you'd never use a grill, but these are particularly obstructive, not much to do about the thickness though...
@@lio1234234 in acoustics every object must be seen as a relation to the wavelength. For waves with long length (bass) the grid is invisible because of diffraction. Therefore you will not have any distortion.
It's the mid and high frequencies that will be most effected by the wood baffles ,a single full range speaker will have a lumpy output at various frequencies that's part of the reason for multi driver array's but that's a whole new can of worms.
1 mistak, the solid grill holds up the "sound throw' for at least 40% Listen to it with and without grill. I bet you it sounds better without. Great build!
I was intrigued by the craftsmanship of your work. I did carpentry work fot great deal of my life. I was pleased your presentation & design. Great job! 😊😊😊
The accent makes the total difference when working towards a finished product, and this is just that, a perfectly representable product. I love the look of that walnut! I would love to try making something like that!
I love this build. I worked at Parts Express back in it's early days when it was located in downtown Dayton Ohio. One of the best places to get speaker components.
I often use countersunk magnets and fit one surface mounted on one face, and the opposite face has them in a hole just slightly deeper than the two magnets together so they never actually touch ( you don't want fragments of neodymium coming loose if they connect) Another benefit of this is that the surface magnet gets pulled into the hole like a peg, which is really satisfing and keeps the facia rigidly positioned. Also, if you put a north and a south on the face and the opposite in the holes, you basically magnetically key the facia to only fit one way
Love your builds Zac; I learn a ton from watching you think through a project. Thanks for showing the good and bad and how you adjust; really helps in my own learning & I really appreciate it.
Hey Zac, as usual I thoroughly enjoyed the build. Impressed with the design elements - the miters for the box so that the wood grain has continuity, and the bleaching... I've never thought that was an option! Keep up the good work and the passion for building. Probably couldn't expect you to send me a speaker all the way to Botswana.
Thanks Mark! I try to edit them down to just the important (and fun) bits haha. My philosophy with video is "no wasted time", yet somehow I keep managing to make 20 minute videos haha.
Love the video, it was incredibly useful to see how you cut the miters on the speaker box. Also, loved how you showed the bleaching process on the walnut. Kelly Wearstler has bleached walnut stairs that are just beautiful.
Thanks Torrell! Those cuts were definitely a bit tricky, but all is well that ends well haha. I'll definitely check out those bleached stairs, that sounds awesome.
Absolutely stunning - the pro one is next level for a portable speaker build. Really want to do a build like this and this is great motivation :) Well done as always!

@@ZacBuilds thx zac ;) but i’m french and i live in France, it would be way too expensive to send the speaker across the ocean ;) Your videos are great ! You deserve more subs ;)

I've watched a lot of electricians build speakers. Its funny what they care about like custom built crossovers, and what wood workers care about, which is pretty.
9:35 If you have problems with glue ups setting up too fast, try hide glue. Woodworkers have been using it for thousands of years and it has a working time of about an hour. The downside is it takes 24 hours to dry. But another plus is that you can remove it with water, and it's entirely reversable if something is not right.
20:15 I learned something related to those speaker drivers leaving gapes between themselves and the speaker enclosure. You can use putty or some craft clay around their perimeter before screwing them to the enclosure. It ensures a tightly sealed fitting, improving the sound quality. Also, anyone trying to replicate this build, I would suggest them to mount the backpanel with screws and not glue that up. Especially, first timers.
@Techserract Man, I work in IT and since the pandemic I've gotten myself into woodworking and I love it. I watch UA-cam videos to get inspired and you're like an awesome sauce of goodness for inspiration! Thanks for doing this builds and giving stuff away! Love to see more! Have a great day!
I like how youre worried about the magnets effecting the speaker but you seem to have no issue with the GOD AWEFUL speaker grill you haphazardly designed
Unfortunately not, that pre-dates my youtube channel. BUT I do have a blog post showing how I did it here: zacbuilds.com/2018/03/21/mid-century-modern-entertainment-unit/ Also, sometime in the coming months I plan to re-do that entertainment console and make a new one from the ground up!
Haha I know what you mean, I'm going to do some speakers in the future and try my hand at veneering them. Not looking forward to it, but it'll be a good skill to have.
Bleaching walnut? Never would have thought, but it turned out nice. Walnut and the like are my favorite types of hardwood, there's just a lot of character to the grain patterns. Also, like the use an oak strip as an accent, gives the piece finesse.
Butt joints are fine! Cus you'll be filling and painting or veneering. Glue n screw and don't be shy with both. Unless you use solid wood, in which case sound quality isn't your premium so make it as fancy as you like. 👍
Just discovered your channel, it's really nice and easy to understand for a french ! I may look forward to build one of these speakers but quite hard in a flat.

Anest Iwata W71-1G (1.0mm / gravity type) plus PC-4S (400c.c paint cup) will do the job for entry level! By the way, for those speakers to sound better, separate the L/R chamber to create 2 x compartments in order to eliminate turbulence and sound pressure from the other speaker. Your current design is based on infinite baffle or sealed enclosure therefore the speaker sensitivity will drop as each speaker has to work harder. For your future speaker cabinet designs, you may consider adding a suitable diameter port + pipe for each of the speakers. The port diameter and pipe length is critical for a narrow but specific low frequency. However, if you prefer infinite baffle/sealed enclosure design, the box has to be bigger than the ones shown in this video. Good luck and wish you all the best!

Speaker box air volume question. You never said if you designed each box based on the driver's recommended box volume, how did you decide on the size of the boxes?
Good question! The kit came with a recommended interior volume, which I did match these boxes too. There's so much to cover I often forget to include stuff 😂
I have bleached walnut to almost paper white. If you then apply Minwax colonial maple stain, it matches walnut that has been in a custom van for a few years in the southern US. Hope that helps somebody who's needing to fix up a van that's been damaged or needs an upgrade...
Nice build but I think I would have chosen maple for the grill if the desired outcome was a light colored front grill for contrast. But it is always fun to try new techniques.
