- Fellow EC Fan-Addict Club Admin Jon Gothold and I take a look at "The Bitter End and Other Stories by Reed Crandall," Vol. 35 in the Fantagraphics EC Artist's Library series, and remember our dear friend, EC Fan-Addict supreme Roger Hill!
I love this I started collecting the Fantagraphics EC Artist's Library. The first book in the series I ever got was the other Reed Crandall The High Cost of Dying and Other Stories.
They are great collections! 👍
I loved this change up
Reed Crandall was an AMAZING artist. His skills as a renderer are second to none, and he is one of the great EC Comics storytellers. I enjoy the way he crafted a page--the way he laid out his panels, the compositions in each, and how he revealed details via contrast and line to give us a nice depth of field. Rendering in illustration is tricky, but artists like Alex Raymond, Bernie Wrightson, John Severin, Jack Davis, and Reed Crandall always pulled off super-elaborate amounts of detail and texture. My favorite artists at EC were Wallace Wood and Al Williamson, but Crandall is right up there with those guys! EC just had the BEST of the BEST when it came to artists!
I first encountered Crandall's work in the Warren Publishing mags, and was blown away! However, his stories at EC are just astoundingly good, and are not to be missed! Reed was a mega-talent in the comic book industry, and I'm glad to see his work being celebrated and appreciated! He could do it all, and do it all as well as anyone in the business--and better than most!
Obviously, this is a MUST-have book to have for the collection! What a nice holiday treat this video is!
Rest in peace, Roger Hill. Roger seemed like such a great guy, and I exchanged emails and information with him. He really liked my Old Witch illustrations, and wanted to run them in EC Fan-Addict. I don't know if he didn't or not, but he sent me some great back issues of the fanzine. He loved EC like no other, and guys like you, Thommy, carry that same kind of love. I also love EC, and appreciate all the creators and the great fans that EC has spawned. Just amazing.
I saw your letter in the most recent issue of Roger's EC Fan-Addict Fanzine - thanks for mentioning the article I wrote! We are one big family - Roger will be missed.
I know you'll love the new Crandall collection...HOOHAH!
I haven't seen the issue yet. I hope to have a copy by Saturday. I really enjoyed your article, man!@@ecfan-addict9477
Jon Gothold may already know this however, for those who don't or are interested, Warren did release Creepy #74 which features 9 tales Illustrated by Reed Crandall including The Cast of Amontillado.
My order of this book should arrive on the 28th! I’m hyped
Thank you for the content I really enjoy this I pulled the trigger on Bitter End. no regrets.
It's a great collection! 👍
Thanks for talking about one of the Fantagraphics EC HCs! I don't think Reed Crandall is appreciated enough by many contemporary fans of comics, imho. His work is phenomenal! He was incredibly detailed. His style is sort of like Bernie Wrightson's work, in some ways. And Wrightson is celebrated- and rightfully so- as one of the greatest comics artists ever(his illustrated version of "Frankenstein," even though it's illustrated prose, & not a comic or graphic novel... is also amazing!)! But Crandall was fantastic! Thanks for the discussion! 😊 👍🏻 ❤
I always try to talk up these volumes as they come out - it was great to have Jon on this time!
@@ecfan-addict9477 Yeah, it was a great video! And I'm glad you talk up the Fantagraphics EC HCs when you can! Those EC artists that each GN focuses on are incredible artists! Being able to better see each artist's line work & inking is delightful! I like some artists better than others- just speaking for my own tastes. If I had to pick just 5 EC artists, they'd be the following: Ingels, Davis, Craig, Kamen, & Crandall.
Thanks again!👍🏻
Thanks for highlighting the great Reed Crandall! His inks were outstanding and I desperately tried to copy this in my comic book ambitions in the 70s but never got close. Cool tees you're wearing. Can these be bought anywhere??
These are older tees from Graphitti, but Fright Rags recently did an EC logo tee with a larger logo
Great having this for one of the most under-appreciated artists, Reed Crandall. Sound, though, is terrible.
Where did you guys purchase those EC Comics t-shirts?
I guess those are vintage now, they were put out by Graphitti designs 20 or so years ago (?)
the microphones were not really doing their job
Right, first time we did one of these that wasn't just me on my phone - we will try lav mics if we do this format again.
Thanks for watching 👀
