I personally consider Oliver & Company as part of this era. In terms of the movie style, it absolutely fits.
I can definitely understand why as there was a little bit of computer work in there although they did still use xerox unlike The Little Mermaid. I consider Oliver as one that could go between either era. The same could be said for Bolt too as it sits between the Post-Ren and Revival era. -Josh
Oliver and Company is almost like a prototype of the renaissance era that began a year later. It’s a bridge between both eras.
It’s sort of between eras. That one and The Great Mouse Detective are both in that boat.

As an example, Tarzan, a movie considered part of the renaissance, already feels like a transition to another era, because the soundtrack is mostly non diegetic unlike the movies released before. Film eras don't just start all of a sudden, they transition as film's style change until they are noticeable enough to mark them.
You know why I think the Renaissance succeeded so well? Because the people at Disney had the idea to combine traditional ideas with modern ones. They compromised and found a way to make both styles work because both tradition and modernization have something amazing to offer.
But nowadays it’s just, forget tradition entirely and focus only on modernization.
To be fair, the last decade has been both financially and critically big for Disney and audiences have clinged on to the films of the Revival like they did during the Renaissance. I do think that people are clamoring for a different style from Disney and it seems like Wish is going to give people that.

Great video! I don't care how many channels cover topics like this, I will watch them all! Great video and you get lots of good information across in just under 20 minutes! One criticism/mistake I noticed, though-- you put Hans Zimmer down as songwriter but he was the score composer. Elton John was the main songwriter and I think Lebo M had some hand in writing some songs on top of arranging the African chorus
I worked for Disney for 8 years at the park and studio level. Katzenberg was an UNPARALLELED d-bag who had some good marketing ideas, but who was driving the company to a fiery, unsustainable death. It was even rumoured back then that Frank Wells' death was deliberate. But that's another story....
I've never met him but I heard he's got a big ego. It's clear from his history in Hollywood.

My favourites are tarzan and pocahontas (and princess and the frog which i consider renaissance)
The Princess and the Frog is considered part of the Revival era because it came out in 2009. Pocahontas came out in 1995 and Tarzan came out in 1999.

It could've, but Katzenberg got greedy for more prestige after the Beauty and the Beast Oscar nod, so he forced Disney to make Pocahontas "serious", hence: it wasn't as genuinely well-made.
It will be part of the next video but Pocahontas was a tough story to tell as they didn't really know how much fact to put with the fiction. Also, there were lots of opinions going into Pocahontas, not just Katzenberg. -Josh
@@ModernMouse Yes, and a sidebar: I don't think historical inaccuracy was the actual reason why people love to criticize it; it's just a ruse to complain over the true problem: a weak film. Cuz tons of films are historically inaccurate, but if they simply do a great job telling a story, ppl will look past it. Just look at Fox's 1997 animated hit, "Anastasia" which imo was as wildly inaccurate as Pocahontas, yet it got none of the hate and even achieved a Disney milestone of getting a Broadway stage treatment. To get even more specific, Terrence Malick's own Pocahontas film, 2005's "The New World" was also WILDLY inaccurate to history, yet is deemed one of the best films of its decade. Again: simply because it was told well :)
@@transp0rter1 I agree. Either they go the all serious route, or go all out with it being Disneyfied. Trying to do both at the same time (without the nuance or depth as "Hunchback) caused it to fail at either.
@@transp0rter1 That is interesting. Pocahontas is one of those movies that I love but everybody hates. Maybe it is not fair to pick on Pocahontas when other films have historical inaccuracies. Even within the Disney canon it is normal for movies to be really inaccurate compared to the source material. I do like the movie Anastasia. It is a very fun and enjoyable movie. I think out of the two, Pocahontas would be better. It tried to tackle the relevant issues of the time. It tackles racism and colonialism. It is a challenging and risky thing to do. I think that deserves an A for effort. Later on, Hunchback of Notre Dame and Zootopia tackle racism too. I like that too. It makes for an interesting story when people of color are oppressed by racism, and then they work to overcome it. Anastasia doesn't address the relevant issues at all. It works fine as a kids movie. However when I learn about the real history, I find to be fascinating. I think the movie would have been better with some more accuracy. I would like to have the main conflict be between the Romanovs and the communists. That would bring up interesting issues of classism. Heck Robin hood also tackles issues of classism in the feudal system, and I thought that was great. The Anastasia movie is like telling the story of the American Revolution without mentioning rebellious colonists. It wouldn't even mention the severe taxes on the colonists. It would just show that some vague magic made the king of England loose the American Colonies. I think there is a reason why Anastaisia was made the way it was. It was released shortly after the end of the Cold War. The kids wouldn't know about this very well. However the parents are likely to be scared to death of Russia. So if an animated movie does take place in Russia in 20th century, it has got to be heavilly sugar coated. The only threat is one magical man with his minions and that is it. That is tame. This tame nature of the movie is so parents don't get too scared to bring thier kids.

Animated movies since the 1980s influenced a lot of the works we see today with how they could appeal to both kids and adults. The Disney Renassaince however helped American animators tell such interesting stories with great messages and far more memorable characters compared to what we got in the golden age which didn’t always have the best stories that both kids and adults could enjoy. I don’t feel like Pixar would exist without these movies.
I refer to "Renaissance" as the "First Princess Era". Half the movies in this era (Mermaid, Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan) are literally Princess movies, and four of the other five (Lion King, Hunchback, Hercules, Tarzan) follow the same broad story strokes, those being that they revolve around two young people, one male and one female, finding their place in the world, falling in love, there is usually royalty involved, and the romance is resolved by the end. Literally the only film in this era of the 10 that does not follow this basic story structure is Rescuers Down Under, and so I think that a better name for the Era is "First Princess Era". The reason I say first is that I would then call the "Revival" the "Second Princess Era", seeing as it contains Tiana, Merida (Pixar I know but still a Princess), Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa, and Moana.
@Podcast - SørenCast Z obviously there were princesses before Ariel, but they didn't come from the same era. Snow White was from 1937, Cinderella from 1950, and Sleeping beauty from 1959, all very different times for the animation division. From 1989-1999, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan all came out of the division, 5 princess characters concentrated into one era. They're not the first princesses, but it IS the first 'princess era'.
@Podcast - SørenCast Z furthermore, 'techincally' as you say, four out of the five of them are royalty, and so are princesses. Ariel marries a prince, Belle marries a prince, Jasmine is the daughter of the Sultan, Pocahontas is the daughter of the chief. So yes, even though it is a marketing gimmick, four out of the five of them are in fact literal princesses.

This video comes late as I was in the midst of a job change and settling into it. Its an awesome job, but it took a few weeks to figure out and I definitely spent tons of my free time learning it...but now we are back on track. Next week will be part two of this video. -Josh

Greetings! I was wondering if you guys could make a video (if you have not already) comparing and contrasting the different art styles of every Disney Era. I have noticed that each era had a defining art style. For example, the exquisite mix of classical and modern animation that occurred during the Renaissance via the mixture of 2D hand-drawn animation and 3D animation, or the thick-lined and roughly drawn animation of the Dark Age, and then of course the rubber hose charm of the Golden and Wartime Era, and of course all the other Era’s. So, if you guys would like to make this video, than it would be great! Cheers!

Whoa, nice informal video! The Bronze Era is also called the Dark Era on certain lists. But since this is the Renaissance Era, imo the best Era, I ranked my Worst to Best of the Era.

Wow! I'd love to know why you think Lion King is one of the worst of the era? No judgement from me, but I'd just love to know.
@@ModernMouse Lol, alright. While The Lion King is far from the worst Disney movie I've seen, as here was good things in it, the problems I had with the movie was 4 things: Pacing, Timon & Pumba's message, The Romance Scenario, and Simba's Adult character.
The pacing of the movie kept bouncing around. It doesn't know what it wanted to be serious movie or a comedy. Unlike Hunchback, which kept its serious tone mostly through the movie, TLK kept going from serious to comedy to serious to comedy. It felt odd and off.
Timon and Pumba, while funny at times, gave the wrong message to Simba with "Hakuna Matata" and, tbh, were unnecessary in the movie to drove the plot.
Simba was the most problematic to me in the movie. He's the only character in the Renaissance Era I completely didn't cheer for at the end. Simba as a Cub made mistakes and believed everything that Scar said made sense because he is a Child. It was supposed to set up for his return and cheer him as he grew stronger as a character.
However, my beef with him as an Adult was he continued to be a selfish, immature characte for a while. He completely falls into Timon & Pumba's lazy message of "Hakuna Matata". Good job, teach ppl to be lazy and let them think their troubles are washed away by doing nothing.
Simba easily falls into it and when Nala comes and finds him, he brushes his responsibilities off and basically tells her "It's not his problem". He finally grows up after Mufusa lectures him like a child from the Heavens. Simba is also a character that is very easily manipulated and don't find him to be a Strong King.
Oh, I forgot, the Romance between Nala and Simba was completely rushed. There were no romantic feelings but all of a sudden, poof, they fall for each other. It's weird.
If you have any counterpoints to this, I'll love to hear it. I could be missing something in-between. :)
@@NightmareLink110 Personally, I felt much more tonal whiplash with Hunchback than The Lion King. In The Lion King, there isn't much overly zany and goofy comedy and the comedy that is there, at least in my opinion, does not really clash with the more serious aspects of the movie. In Hunchback, there is over the top and zany comedy all over the place that just feels out of place when the rest of the movie is so Dark. Don't get me wrong, I love Hunchback, but I just feel the way it handles comedy creates more problems than it does anything else. Also, Timon and Pumba were necessary to drive the plot. They practically raised Simba, so it's not surprising that he would become convinced of their ideals, especially when everything seemed so hopeless for him. It's completely natural for someone to want to forget their grief. During the time that he is away from the pridelands, Simba is just in a prolonged state of denial. The second half of the movie is about Simba finally coming to terms with the loss of Mufasa and facing his past and taking up his rightful place as king in a way that I think is extremely well written. Really the only point I agree with is the romance. It definitely needed more time to develop other than one song and a few interactions. However, early on in the movie, it is mentioned that Simba and Nala are betrothed, so it make sense for them to develop romantic feelings other than them getting together purely out of necessity. This is a Disney movie after all. But this is just my take on it and you are entitled to your own opinion.

I see you place Aladdin at number 1. I approve. I was absolutely obsessed with it as a kid. Pretty sure I could play the whole thing inside my head if I closed my eyes and took the time to remember it all.
The renaissance is awesome. I love it. I am watching Disney movies in canon order. The Renaisance is the part I look forward to the most. I enjoy every minute of it. I think that the renaisance may be the best of the Disney Eras. It is significantly better than all the other ones I watched before. I don't think the other ones later is as good. The era after the Renaisance was bad. The only movies I like are Brother Bear and Lilo and Stitch. Then the Revival Era does have some good stuff. I am most fond of Forzen and Moana. However I doubt that it is a better era overall. I was a kid in the ninties. So when I watch Renaisance movies I relish the experience. I am milennial fan with glasses full of rose colors and nostalgia. I have been following the Disney Eras in series on this channel. This video is perhaps the greatest one. It is nice to learn about what was going on and the new leadership within the Disney Company. This is the time when Disney made some it its greatest movies and it had a lot of commercial success. One new person I like is Alan Menkin. He is so cute. He also did great music for the movies. Another music guy I like is Elton John. He is so good. I was a big Lion King fan as a kid. When I was an adult I got into Elton John. I enjoy listening to his music. I do like the two Lion King songs he sang. It is so nostalgic. I have a cool idea. Maybe someone can do a remake of Wizard of Oz and have Elton John do the music. The happy ending of the story is that Dorothy gets to leave Oz and return home to Kansas. At that point, Elton John can sing "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". That is my favorite song. It is so beautiful. I also like "Crocodile Rock". It is so fun and catchy.
That is interesting of how the movies go. The Little Mermaid is a huge step up from the Bronze Age. The Renaisance movies in general are huge improvements. The use of CAPs and CG made for much more beautiful visuals. It is so much better than the Xerox visuals before. I also noticed that the plot of the movies is so much better. A lot of the earlier movies had weak to nonexistent plots. the Renaisance movies have stong plots that one can apply acts to. This video said that the movies have acts like musicals. That is intriguing. It is subtle, but it makes things so much better. I like to interpret stories as four acts instead of three. I can give the Little Mermaid as an example. Act 1 is where Arial loots a ship and sings in her cave. It ends with a lock in, where Arial rescues Eric from the storm at sea. Act 2 is where Sebasian tries to convince Arial to stay under the sea and where Triton destroys Arial's collection. It ends with a midpoint where Arial makes the deal with Ursula. Act 3 is where Arial moves in with Eric and they go on a romantic tour. It ends with a final break, where Arial and Eric have a romantic boat ride. Act 4 is where Ursula seduces Eric and they have a wedding. It ends with a climax, where there is the big battle between Arial and Ursula. Then the story ends with Arial and Eric having a wedding. The Rescuers Down Under is one movie that I completely forgot about. I did watch it in recent times. I say it is the worst of the Renaissance. It is not a bad movie per se. It is a fun action movie with pretty visuals. It is just that all the other Renaisance movies are so much better. One part I do like about this movie is that there are big birds. There is an albatross and an eagle. It is amazing to have flight in the movie. Then there was Beauty and the Beast. This one is really cool. It is nice that it was nominated for best picture award. I find both Arial and Belle to be very relatable. I am a major nerd that has a hard time fitting in. I would rather dwell in fantasy and imagine great adventures. Both of these characters are like that. Belle is nerdy due to her reading books all the time. Arial is nerdy due to her collection and study of human artifacts. Aladdin is a great movie. When watching these movies, I noticed that Aladdin is like Rescuers Down Under but better. There is plenty of exciting adventures. The carpet rides are awesome. I noticed that people make a big deal about Genie. Yeah Genie is random and funny. He is a major character. However I find it odd that the other major characters are not talked about as much. I like Aladdin and Jasmine too. Aladdin is cool as the protagonist of the story. Jasmine is cool as a Disney Princess. Then there is the Lion Kind. Oh my gosh. I love this movie so much. It is my favorite movie as a kid. Now it is still one of my favorite Disney movies. The only movie I like more is the two Frozen movies. Lion King is one of the few Disney movies with an origional story. It has inspirations in Bambi and Hamlet. This video said that it is also based on the Bible. i find that wierd. I don't see any similarity between the Lion King and the Bible. I have noticed that Egypt has a similar story about Horus. However I think that is just a coincidence.
I did notice something as a adult. The leading men in these movies are so attractive. Wow. When these movies came out, I was a little girl. I was infant to kindergartener at the time. I didn't like boys back then. I was grossed out by them. When I grew up to an adult, I like boys so much more. I find some boys to be attractive. it is interesting to see these old movies with an adult mindset. I noticed that these guys are so hot. Woah. I found Eric to be attractive. He is so cute. I didn't realize before how cute he was. Maybe it because he looks a lot like Aladdin. If Aladdin was Danish instead of Arabian, he would look just like Eric. I do like how nice Eric is. Ariel is so incredibly awkward. She is literally a fish out of water. She could so easily irritate people without meaning to. However Eric handles this incredibly well. He is very sweet and supportive. The he ever does is laugh. That one scene where Arial tanks dining ettiquete is hilarious. Eric got a good laugh. I also find the Beast to be attractive. His human form is so hot. This is something I am alone on. Many people do not like what the human form looks like. I don't get it. I thought the Beast in human form was so good looking. My favorite part of the whole movie is the ending. That form brings a huge payoff for all the stuggle and conflict the movie goes through. I wish that form had more screen time. Then there is Aladdin. Oh my gosh, Aladdin. People are making a big deal about Genie. However in my last viewing I am just getting into Aladdin instead. Aladdin is so incredibly adorable. He is also really hot. He does come in two flavors. One is his poor clothes and he has an opean vest. There is a bare chest. The other flavor is fancy prince clothes. Both versions of Aladdin are so hot. Aladdin gets to remain in his attrative human self for the entire movie. He just gets a wardrobe change. As an adult I struggle with poverty and face the classism. Aladdin has a classism problem too. I find it very compelling and relatable. Aladdin is stuck in poverty but he wishes for a better life. I also like how Jasmine is not a gold digger. She likes Aladdin for the way he genuinely is and not because of any money or status he gets. This causes a lot of confusion in the couple, but they do reconcile at the end of the movie. The payoff at the end of the movie is amazing. Aladdin does gain wealth and status at the end of the movie. It is not because of the Genie, because Jafar took that away. It is because Aladdin saved kingdom from Jafar, and so he earned the wealth and status. I think that is great. Merit is so important. A lot of poor people work so hard but lack of opportunity prevents them from climbing up the ladder. The whole idea of poor people being lazy is really unfair. Laziness doesn't apply to all poor people. Seeing Aladdin earn prestige through hard work is wonderful. Aladdin is my favorite Disney prince. He is really cute. He has a bad boy vibe I find appealing. Aladdin is the only one to star in his own movie. So he gets a lot of fleshing out as a character. I find that the hot guys of the Disney Renaisance are mainly in the earliar half. Shang is hot too though. Ooh. Let's get down to buissiness.
Side note little mermaid also got rejected because they felt it would be too similar to the movie “Splash”
Good note. On top of that Splash Mountain was named after the movie because Eisner thought the name was a good tie in despite not having anything to do with the ride featuring Song of the South characters

Tyler Riley I wouldn’t even call Katzenberg a villain. He got caught up in the politics of the Hollywood studio system and when he got pushed out he definitely wanted to compete. Some of his tactics weren’t great but he cooled down from it and has been a driving force of innovation in the industry. I’d also say that without his leadership we probably wouldn’t have seen the Renaissance at Disney. He questioned everything and streamlined the processes at Disney while also allowing some of the younger talent to have a voice

I love Alladin, but hearing how much Robin Williams negotiated for the role of the Genie broke my heart. He probably NEVER got over that. Especially since "Toys" was trash.
Toys was okay buy not nearly the hit it could have been...but the fault of that whole deal lies on Jeffrey Katzenberg.
Amazing time to be a kid I still remember seeing the lion king in theaters vividly.
I remember that we didn't go to the theater but we went to Blockbuster and rented The Lion King and I remember sitting in our living room as a whole family and watching it. Then when it was over I took it to my room where I had a really small tv with a VCR and I watched it again that same day. (Wow this whole relpy makes me feel old)
