True Story
First time I ever installed coil overs on my forester. I dropped the heavy ass OEM strut onto the CV axle and it tore the boot. Ur vids gave my the confidence to pull out the CV axle and get the boot replaced for $40.
Thanks.
i recently started hearing clicking when i lock my wheel to the right at low speeds on my 2011 Subaru forester, i was suspecting it to be the CV axle. I wasn't too sure if i'd be able to do it myself but after watching this video i feel pretty confident. Thank you for always going into great detail with all you videos :)
Everyone tries to say you need to spin the star-dial housing out. But glad to see that you don’t. One thing I hate... is having the count the turns. Thanks for the vid
Excellent vid MrSubaru1387. It does make laugh the ease the bolts/nuts come off in your vids, the advantages living in a dry climate I suppose. Here in Fife, Scotland, I had to use a breaker bar to get the brake caliper mounting bolts off my 2013 Subaru XV with only 30,000 miles on the clock!. Every thread is given a liberal coating of copper slip/anti seize on reassembly.
Yes, much appreciated! I watched 5 different videos and yours was the most helpful and funny" us northers and rust belts" it took me one hr after pb blaster sat for 2hrs, with hammer and punch to get old axle off. I used zip ties to tie up my caliper out of the way! Yay 😊
It's cool to see these videos - Then I can see what My Mechanic has to go through when He works on My Car (& Why He gets paid $75 per hour. Ha! Ha!). Seriously though - I'm not mechanically skilled enough to do this job. Normally, I just drop the Car off & Tim (my mechanic) calls Me up when it is done. He shows Me the parts but I never watch him do the work - He did this CV job for Me... I realize why a good Mechanic get paid what they do - Not only do they have lots of overhead (Tools, Garage, Insurance, etc) but the knowledge, skill & experience to use all those Tools is what a customer actually pays for. I've had lots of different Mechanics & Cars over the years but when You find a good Mechanic - You want to keep him...
Nice that you don’t have to remove the outer ring on the corner diff to change the seal. The rear on my Impreza was rusted in so badly I couldn’t remove it. The tabs just kept breaking off when I tap on them.
Company23 makes the tool now. Just came out a few months ago. About $50 compared to several hundred for the old factory tool.
Another good job, for me it’s relaxing watching you repair a Subaru. No fuss no drama just good work.
when nuts get stuck in an impack socket, just grab the outside of the socket to give it resistance and doesnt just spin up to speed, point it down so gravity assists, and hit the trigger a bit till it starts "impacting" and itll rattle right out and fall gently on the ground.
Really dig your channel, great vids. Just wanted to say that a Silver metallic Sharpie is a must-have in any tool collection! Keep up the good work!
There is a cheap handy magnetic tool that you attach to the rotor with a leveler that allows you to ensure you maintain alignment. I found it worked really well. Also I thought Subaru recommended replacing the bearing seal in the hub as the axle puts pressure on the seal when installed and can weaken the seal when the pressure is removed. Can you comment on that?
Nice job thanks for the video! I've had a few of those leaks caused by a failed o ring on the housing...
Here in the Upper Peninsula of MI we get 300+ inches of snow annually and road salt in proportion, so rust is the biggest destroyer of cars... I've been using Fluid Film to undercoat with decent success and it's kept my underbody in good shape including bolt heads. My '13 SV is still rust-free aside from the exhaust. Rotors came off with just a lil tap with a rubber mallet, didn't need the bolts to push them. My last car before that I could barely work on since the bolt heads had all rusted to the point where they weren't hex heads anymore... had to weld nuts on a few of them to extract the bolts. I'm thankful at least the newer Subaru's have underbody protection to keep crud off of the fuel/brake lines unlike anything made before 2010.
Do I top off the trans fluid or the diff fluid for the cvt when replacing the cv axle?
I've done the boot trick on the rotor before, and I'm up in the rust belt, however I've only done this with grade 5 hardware not a bolt from the car, as they can break. Have shattered rotors doing it too, thankfully all of them that broke were getting replaced anyways.
FML. replaced my CV joints but not the seals (hello subaru temecula parts dept is useless) because I apparently didn't try hard enough to find the seals. Now I have a leak out of 1 side after 5k mi. Let this be a warning to anyone considering doing CV joints without the seals...DON'T!!!
Great video man learned alot from it
No rust? Rust causes one here in New England to learn all sorts of new curse words! Great vid as usual!😀
Yeah rust and lack of maintenance by the previous owner. Lol hello from down east Maine.
Hi bud do you mind giving us a list of tools needed for this?? I would greatly appreciate it!
Awesome step by step instructions. I learned I really need to buy a torque wrench. 😅 Any recommendations on a good quality torque wrench?
Gearwrench has some good/affordable options.
I've personally just found it easier to remove the 2 strut bolts and popping the ball joint out of the control arm. Don't remember ever having to take the brakes and such off to do any of mine. Did have to take that brake bolt out though to give enough slack on hose.
I go by the book in my videos and the more components out of the way, the easier it is to show viewers what's going on and get the camera in better.
@@MrSubaru1387 makes sense in that case then
@@mikestern9639you don’t even have to take the ball joint out… just the brake line bolt for slack and the abs sensor…and I do the strut bolts and then you have plenty of room to get the axle out and in
I’m surprised you don’t have to lube the new seal before you drive it in but maybe there’s enough lube in there you don’t need to do that🤷
This was really outstanding. I have a Subaru Impreza g4 2017(2WD-Japanese version), would the mechanical work be the same? Also, for the tool you used for calculating the neutons or foot pounds what if I don't have that tool, what other judgements could I utilize to get accurate readings? I'm not a trained mechanic but I like doing things myself and watching your video has really taught me many things so far
You could possibly rely on wrench arc specifications, it’s not as accurate as a torque wrench but would get you well into the ball park. For example: “60 degrees past sharp rise in torque”
At least us Northerners can handle 5 inches of snow, without shutting down the whole city 😂
More like a half inch of will shut down the city and close schools for a week.
Just 5 inches? Live near one of the big lakes up here, & 5 inches will be a light dusting. 😂
We’re you just changing the axle or is a requirement for this? Also is it recommended to change the 32mm bolt?
I installed my seal and it still was leaking. I drive it in until it stopped going in further. I think that a my mistake. How far do we drive the seal in? 2013 crosstrek
Hey just wondering what type of ratchet were you using to take off the stabilizer link ?
It's a Gearwrench pass through. Did a video on it.
Great video topic as I have found owning 3 Subaru's over many years a front axle assembly swap out is a very common thing. Quite a few years ago after some cheap Chinese axles failed way too early my Subaru mechanic advised spending more (aprox $225 instead of $120) for the ones remanufactured by Subaru in Indiana and they seem to last a very long time as long as the boots hang in there. Is this your experience as well ? Thanks
I only use the Subaru factory remans. No aftermarket axles, and I've used a bunch of brands, hold up.
Is it the same for 2018 model crosstrek?
Sweet! Sort of new Michelins!
I just attempted this repair. My inner axle seal is stuck. It’s tearing and obviously stuck (burned onto) the bore. It’s coming out in tiny pieces but can’t get it all. Can I dissolve it chemically? Any other ideas? Nothing regarding this problem on UA-cam or internet search. Help !!
The 2018 Wrx service manual says to replace the seal when putting in a new axle. My 2018 Wrx 6MT has only 29k miles and the fluid was changed at 15k with Motul, so I think the inside and seal should be good. Can I get away without changing the seal and changing fluid? I have 4 qts of Motul on hand. Also, can I raise the replacement side of car higher to eliminate fluid from coming out? I will have redundant fail safes in place for safety.
Great vid!
DO NOT USE NON-SUBARU AXLES!!! I purchased cheaper ones "off brand" from Rock-Auto and it ruined my front differential, had to place the tranny.
Never aftermarket axles. They always shake and vibrate.
In a very short period of time i have changed 2 outer cv exles, what can be the reason of damaging it so quickly? The problem occurs in front on left side. Thanks
Any reason my CV axle won't pull free from the diff like in the video? Tried a fairly long pry bar and no use. Worth renting a CV pulling fork from the store? It's the same car I am working on. Many thanks in advance
Does the diff seal seat into place against a flat surface?
Do you have to change the seal when doing an axle or only if it’s leaking?
Hey I have a 1999 Impreza outback is the front axle seal replacement same just pop the seal out and hit it back in?
The remanufactured drive axle is more cheap than the new one? where do i get one?
Subaru dealership, Subaruparts.com.
Would you recommend rebuilding the CV axle for a SVX, since OEM are not available? Or is their another Subaru CV axle that fits ? Thank you 🙏🏼
What was that socket wrench you used that allowed you to put an allen wrench through the socket?
Pass thru socket set.
Nice job
Thanks!
Sir please help I can't find a factory cv axle for the front of my 1997 out back ,what do you recommend ,my front end still shakes after brakes new tires alignment balance ,and noticed they the axles are not factory,it was that way when I purchased it and no amount of money I throw at it has helped,I've read forums that it could be the after market axles, help!!!!!even replaced the inner and outer tie rod ends.
I need 1997-1999 Subaru Legacy EJ2.5GT sedan transmission manual 5 speed.
rockyrossy11@gmail.com
The remanufactured axle part in the video is discontinued.
Hi, I'm about to replace a front Axle on a subaru forester 2014, did you had to replace the differential oil after this? Did you lose any differential oil during this service?
No.
@@MrSubaru1387 thanks for your help, great stuff
Would this apply to a 2015 Impreza?
Any tips on setting up the center diff preload? When replace axle seal?
You don't have to touch the preload.
where is the contact point of the jack when you jacked the car up from the front? right on the transmission?
Center of the front crossmember.
Would this be the same with 2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i limited and Torque specs of the bolts?
Torque the axle nut after car is lowered?
Thank You.
Can't you just remove from the knuckle side first then just pull..?
Hey unrelated question but i have an LL Bean 04 Outback and recently there has been a rumbling and shaking from under my seat area on initial acceleration, did you ever experience this with your Outback and know what it might be? It still accelerates fine, but the shaking feels pretty unhealthy.
Can a 4th Gen cv joint work on a 5th Gen subaru? I have a Subaru Impreza 2017
Thank you for the video. Do you know it the cv axle is covered under the powertrain warranty ?
I have 2015 crosstrek 57000 on it and it has the clicking noise.
It should be, but would have to ask your dealer.
@@MrSubaru1387 Thanks
awesome, thanks!
@MrSubaru1387 did the new axle come with the ABS ring on the axle or did u switch it out from the old one I replace both front axles and it made the ABS the traction control the hill assist and the check engine lights come on
I got aftermarket axels from partsgeek.com the axels drive good but my car is in limp mode I finally narrowed it down to not having the tone ring on the axle
So I was wondering if the new axle has the ABS ring on it or if u know what the part number for the ABS ring is
Some Subies have a roll pin on the transmission end of the axle don't they? What models do / don't?
The older ones do. The new ones don't.
How much is 200nm in lbs ?
i have a 2015 wrx, and when i grab the axle part thats right next to the front tranny, i can feel a tiny bit of back n fourth play, is this normal? was wondering if i put a new seal would it fix the leak.
?
Nice Job! Are you still giving the car to your Mom or are you going to flip it?
Haven't decided yet. Depends on how everything going on currently plays out.
Why don't you remove the ball joint instead? takes several steps out of the operation and simplifies the breakdown.
I go by the Subaru factory service manual procedures in my videos. Also the more parts I get out of the way, the easier it is to film and show people.
@@MrSubaru1387 that makes sense, thank you for the response. I had just replaced the LCA so I saw that the ball joint route would be easier. I have a high mileage cny 08 5mt outback and 10+ of your videos have helped me a lot.
love, love the vids. mr subaru, where to you get the reman axles? best source? 2009 tribeca with ripped front boots at trans.
Where are you from? I was born in va. Also are you a master certified Subaru technician?
South Carolina. And no. Haven't had a Subaru dealership yet to hire me. Isn't from lack of trying.
@@MrSubaru1387
Mr. Subaru this isn't a criticism just my experience in the industry. I don't think dealerships care much about your knowledge. They care about whether or not you can beat flat-rate without comebacks and how many parts you can sell. Tell them you can make a bunch of money for them.
I recently changed out my CV Joint in my Subaru Forester, and now I've got a vibration at speed from the front. Could the replacement CV Joint be faulty?
What brand axle?
@@MrSubaru1387 Import Direct OE-Quality Replacement Parts from O'Reilly Auto Parts.
@@kirkgarner7381 that's the problem. Almost always get vibration from non-subaru original or reman axles.
A stiff/faulty inner CV joint can cause a vibration on acceleration and sometimes on turns. I've seen it with elcheapo replacement axles right out of the box. I don't know if that's what you're experiencing though.
Replacement axle or just the CV?
Should CV boot lube in regular intervals?
Say what?
@@MrSubaru1387 I mean CV joint grease. Sry if my improper used of terminology make you confused.
@@DrNemea you don't have to grease them.
Definitely not as easy as you make it look… had to remove the ball joint too on my 2017 Crosstrek
Dude You really need some plywood under the jack stands. That’s really dangerous on gravel.
Only been doing it for 16 years. It's hard pack, not loose gravel.
Funny my torque for the Legacy Lugnuts are 89 lbs How funny I would assume they be pretty much the same across the board lol
They pretty much are. Most everything follows suit on Subaru across models and years.
For those watching this, please, dont spray brake cleaner at your differential with the axle out and the hole not covered. And if you do drain your oil and replace it.
Also, when you pull your old axle, check the end that comes out of the differential and make sure the C clip comes out with the old axle. If it comes off during removal and you dont get it out before you go for a drive your transaxle will be caput.
What a joke.
as a crosstrek owner i just wanted to say that i appreciate your awesome vids!
Two Thumbs Way Up. A + Rating.
Awesome, thank you.
As a "norther" I'm jealous of the shorts. I always find myself doing repairs in snow, sleet and whatnot.
How do you know when to stop hammering the seal in with the seal driver? How far is too far and if it's installed with slight angle should I just pull it out entirely?
I have a 2015 outback that is clicking when i pin it left and right looked at my cv axle and no tears or nothing could it be anything else has 115,000 on it
Thanks, you reminded me I need caliper hangers for this springs annual caliper work
Did my axles the other day. As soon as I pulled the axle it dumped out a quart of fluid at least onto my floor. Was very surprised to have this happen. Well I tried to get the old axle back in as quick as I could and I think I ended up damaging the seal. New axles are in and diff was refilled but now I have a slow drip from the diff. Guess I’ll be pulling it again to do seals. Hopefully it doesn’t drain my whole diff again. Never had that happen with any of my other subarus. Never even had a drop. Have you ever experienced this?
Hey I know its been 2 years lol. I just had the same thing happen to me. Did you ever figure out the issue/ solution?
@@erickevans5449 honestly no. Just replaced the axles and refilled. Do axle seals too cause if it leaks you’re gonna have to pull it and refill again
Thank you soooo much for these videos, (2014 XV 125k) I want it to ride till 300k! Please keep making these videos they have helped me very much!! 😁
Dammit! I went to the hardware store to buy a bolt to get my rotors off. To think the bolt was right there.
Only issue I've found using bolts already from the car is if that rotor is really stuck it will mushroom the end of the bolt and make it useless to reuse.
Excellent video! Can you tell us why this repair was needed in the first place? Was the boot ripped, grease leaking, squealing/squeaking? Thanks!
Both front axles were bad. Noise in them when turning or driving with the wheels locked to the left or right. Forgot to cover that in the video.
@@MrSubaru1387 Thanks again! Stay safe.
Nice camera work on this video! Lighting makes all the difference. And brake cleaner is so satisfying... :). What's the impact swivel socket you're using - brand?
In this video there was MAC, Matco, and Snap-on swivels used.
I’ve watched a lot of your videos (more than I’d care to admit), and I agree, the video quality in this one is really good. The sway bar end link removal comes to mind. Great lighting.
Great video , question do I have to replace the seal by your words it looks like a very delicate job
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS. I LIKE THE FACT YOU GIVE THE A COMPLETE DETAILED INFORMATIVE "HOW TO" WITHOUT ALL THE BLAH BLAH IN BETWEEN. QUESTIONS: 1. I RECENTLY DID A SEAL AND AXLE REPLACEMENT FOLLOWING YOUR INSTRUCTIONS; HOWEVER, I AM NOW HEARING A SCRAPPING IN THE FRONT END WHILE IN MOTION. IT SOUNDS LIKE THE BRAKE ROTOR IS SCRAPPING ON SOMETHING I AM GUESSING ITS THE VENT COOLING PLATE ON THE REAR OF THE ROTOR? IS THIS COMMON, NOT SURE HOW THIS HAPPENED, ALSO UNCLEAR IF THIS IS IN FACT MY PROBLEM. QUESTION 2. AFTER INSTALLING THE SEAL DID YOU TOP OFF THE TRANSMISSION DUE TO LOSS OF GEAR OIL? IF SO, DO YOU REPLACE WITH OEM GEAR LUBE OR WILL A GOOD QUALITY 75/90 GEAR OIL WORK? I NOTICED THE GEAR LUBE COMING OUT BEFORE SEAL REPLACEMENT HAS A BLUEISH TINT TO IT. IS THERE A REASONING BEHIND SUBARUS CHOICE IN GEAR LUBE? QUESTIOIN 3. THERE'S AN O-RING INSIDE OF THE SEAL HOUSING, IS IT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THIS O-RING WHEN CHANGING THE SEAL? WHERE DOES A PERSON OBTAIN THE PROPER TOOL TO REMOVE THIS HOUSING CAP FOR THE O-RING SEAL? THANKS, IN ADVICE FOR YOUR GREAT CONTENT!
Where did you jack the front up from? I'm guessing front crossmember?
What? No roll pin? I need to get a newer suby. Just rolled over 250k on the Impreza though so now I’m going to have to go to 300k.
Thanks for a great video. I expect that I will to change a CV axle eventually. One point that I would like to clarify - I don't think that the axle nut sets the preload on the wheel bearing assembly. I changed a wheel bearing on my daughter's Impreza last year and I believe that the bearing has a solid inner race. That would mean that the torque on the nut does not set the preload on the bearings. It is possible that excessive torque on the nut resulting in excess clamp load on the inner race of the bearing could cause that bearing race to grow radially and increase the bearing preload and thus reduce the bearing life so it is still important to properly torque the nut.
Should I replace non-leaking seals when I do the axles or only screw with them if they're leaking?
Man i gotta replace my passenger side with 75 k mi on it what a bust. Its my daily and i dnt even off road it! Thanks for the video.
no clip ? my 03 has a clip and the f n thing is not going back in....I was hoping this one had that clip and I would learn - how do I push the axle back in ? Without the clip, the axle just fell out of the transmission after I pulled the front hub.... I'll try that little pop thing.
I saw your 7year old video of the rear cv axle change on the old outback. Wondering if you have a rear cv axle video or any info to help with on my 2014 crosstrek which needs a new rear cv axle.
Trouble finding a rear CV axel replacement on an XV Crosstrek.. probably a rare failure but do you have a video of this?
where are you located at? i wish i can go and take my subaru to get it fix.
I know you’re down south so you don’t really have to worry about rust as you said… but me in ny…pretty much every threaded fastener and the hub and the face of the rotor would’ve gotten coated with antiseize
Thanks Mr Subaru very informative Thank You!
This has been super useful! I’m getting ready to replace my rear diff and several procedures you use here will come in handy.
Great video. How was the koken 19mm impact socket for lug nuts. The Snap-on caliper bolt specialty socket would have been very useful on this repair. Keep the videos coming.... Flat Out!
Too bad no one has it. Still on national backorder. 0 stock. Lol
quick question i'm thinking about doing these on my 07 wrx, my question is are both axles the same for the front? same part number left and right,?
driver and passenger are the same. i found the answer, in case anyone thinks of asking this hope it helps.
Thanks for posting. Another excellent video as usual. I live up in the Ohio valley rust belt and can only dream of a rust free undercarriage like your Crosstrek has. Is that shaft seal tool easy to come by?
Yup. Was only a few dollars at the dealership. They stock them.
