  • Andres Segovia Scales: C, Am, G, Em D, Bm, A, F# m.
    Jump to the scale you need:
    1.) C major - 120bpm: 0:33
    2.) A melodic Minor - 60bpm: 0:51
    3.) A melodic Minor - 120bpm: 1:41
    4.) G major - 60bpm: 2:05
    4.) G major - 120bpm: 2:53
    5.) E melodic Minor - 60bpm: 3:19
    6.) E melodic Minor - 120bpm: 4:06
    7.) D major - 60bpm: 4:32
    8.) D major - 120bpm: 5:07
    9.) B melodic minor - 60bpm: 5:26
    10.) B melodic minor - 120bpm: 6:14
    11.) A major - 60bpm: 6:39
    12.) A major - 120bpm: 7:26
    13.) F# melodic minor - 60bpm: 7:53
    14.) F# melodic minor - 120bpm: 8:41
    These are the first 8 scales in Andres Segovia's wonderful scale arrangements for the classical guitar. All minor scales are the melodic minor. Scales come in pairs of relative major/minor and follow the circle of 5ths. (C, Am) (G, Em) (D, Bm) (A, F# m). I played each scale at half speed and then full speed and from two different angles so you can see what is going on. Let me know if you have any questions or find these helpful for practice in the comments. Enjoy!
    I will be posting more scales in January of 2021, and will keep the same format for the most part. I will only be posting one Major/minor pair per video in the future so it is easier to find the one you want to practice. I will also leave the metronome on as a practice aid. In these videos I am listening to a metronome through headphones. Next up is E and C# m, then B and G# m and so on around the circle of fifths.

      I found them at this location: kings5messages.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/17297247-segovia-scales-for-classic-guitar.pdf. You can also purchase the notation at most of the places that sell sheet music, for example: www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/product/andres-segovia-6024279.html or www.amazon.com/s?k=segovia+diatonic+major+and+minor+scales&crid=37UCB548DU5IC&sprefix=Segovia+Diatonic+%2Caps%2C136&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_17

      Hi there Chrisophe! Thanks for the questions. I don't play these scales each day anymore, but I sure did when mastering them. Definitely play the scales slowly with metronome and yes, it is a great idea to name the notes as you play them. I try to get some amount of scales and exercises into my daily practice if I can, but that does not always happen when busy with upcoming projects and I just need to dive into the music. They make a great warm-up for sure, and I find they can lead to making up little melodies. I have always told my students to make scales and exercises at least 20-25% of your practice time. So if you practice for 60 minutes, do this foundational stuff for 20 minutes, and do it at the beginning of your practice as you are more likely to get through it!

    Is the correct way to play scales to keep the thumb still on the sixth string? Usually, if I play on the fourth string (D) I keep my thumb on the sixth (E), if I play on the third (G) I move it to the fifth (A) and so on. What do you think about it? Thanks a lot, and best regards.

    • @gwinupm
      @gwinupm  2 роки тому +2

      Hi there Michael, good question, thanks for asking! I generally don't think about it that hard. It looks like in this video I do keep my thumb on the 6th string for much of the scale forms I am playing. I don't think there is a absolute rule here that you can draw upon. Everyone's hands and playing styles are subtly different from one another and so everyone will have a different comfortable spot to put their thumb. The placement of the right hand thumb is more about having a stable hand position than it is about staying on a specific string. If you find that the way you described helps you and makes the scale more fluid, then do it! If it doesn't seem to make much difference then try to strike a balance between hand comfort and good tone. Hope this helps!

  • @cambium0
    @cambium0 5 років тому +2

    pretty clean right hand, it's hard to strike the strings so uniformly when playing rest strokes.

    Very nice, I just wished the camera would be facing the neck of the guitar. Thank you.

    • @gwinupm
      @gwinupm  3 роки тому

      I am not sure how much of the video that you saw, but I play each scale at two different speeds (60bpm and 120bpm) and with two different camera angles to give the watcher different perspectives on both of my hands. Sorry that you could not see enough of the neck. I also wanted to make sure that both hands were in view as both are important. Many people, (especially beginners) focus solely on their left hand and neglect the development of a good right hand. When playing these scales buy Segovia, one should try to rotate through all the different possible combinations of RH fingers. (i,m), (i,a),(m,i), (m,a), (a,m), (a,i), (p,i), and the difficult (i,m,a). Use both free and rest strokes. In this video I have used only the most basic pattern of (i,m) while using rest strokes.

    hello, I saw the F#, is this the key of G?

    • @gwinupm
      @gwinupm  2 місяці тому

      If you see an F# and only and F# in the key signature it is indeed the key of G (or relative minor Em). If you are talking about the F#m in the tittle of this video, then you are actually in the key with 3 sharps, which is A major or F#m. Hope this answers your question!

    • @lkda01
      @lkda01 2 місяці тому

      so that mean the Segovia scale is not in single key as I search about chords in the key of A, it should have C# minor and G# dininished. Im so confuse :(
