Leyenda by Isaac Albeniz

This is one of the most famous pieces in the classical guitar repertoire. Almost all high level professional players have it in the repertoire. Some good performances to check out are Anna Vidovic ua-cam.com/video/inBKFMB-yPg/v-deo.html, and John Williams: ua-cam.com/video/GY5y4Rp3tU8/v-deo.html. I do my best to live up to their examples in this video. Leyenda (legend) or Austurias as it is oft...

Time for yet another installment of my show from last June at the Tower Theater in Bend. A very special show where the audience was small and got to sit up on the stage with me. In the 80 years the Tower has been open this is the first time they have tried a show like this and it went great and was sold out in a bout 5 minutes! Thanks again to the Tower for allowing me this wonderful space to p...
Carnavalito by Jose Luis Merlin, solo show at Tower Theater

Carnavalito by Jose Luis Merlin. (b 1952). This is the fourth movement of Suite del Recuerdo, one of my favorite collections of guitar pieces. I really enjoy playing this piece, particularly the flamenco-esque strumming sections in the middle and end. I have played the entire Suite over the years but this movement and the last movement Joropo are my favorites. Every movement in Suite del Recuer...
Afraid to Dance by Don Ross, solo show at the Tower Theater

This is one of my favorite Don Ross tunes, the percussive intro and outro are particularly fun to play. The altered tuning makes the strings an open E7 chord, E-B-D-E-B-E. Michael, Michael, Michael by Don Ross, solo show at the Tower Theater

-Another great tune by composer and performer Don Ross. This piece of music was inspired by fingerstyle guitar legend Michael Hedges. Don wrote it as a tribute to Michael Hedges after he tragically passed away in 1997 in an automobile accident. Michael Hedges was one of the first pioneers of the new "fingerstyle" type of guitar playing which utilizes rhythmic elements and altered and open tunin...
Sons De Carilhoes by Joao Pernambuco, solo show at Tower Theater

Sons de Carrilhoes is a piece by Joao Pernambuco. It is a really fun piece to play, and one of my favorites. This is one of my all time favorite pieces to play and it uses drop D tuning. The translation of the title means “Sounds of bells” and it was written by Brazilian guitar and choro legend Joao Pernambuco (1883-1947). His real name was João Teixeira Guimarães. The Star of the County down is a beautiful Irish ballad that has been played by many different artists in many different ways. I first learned this song with my Irish rock band, Five Pint Mary while playing the mandolin. Not only does he write some of the best modern day guitar music, but he is an excellent performer as well. Hi Matthew, quick comment to say great work with mastering these exercises/studies at such a speed, and making these videos - I practice some of the 120 RH studies here and there, and some are definitely very tricky. Thanks!
That is exactly why I recorded these videos, to help folks practice them at a slow speed and the speed you are working towards. Glad you found it helpful!
Great. Learning this. All other players rushing through this peace like hell. This helps a lot. Thank you!
That’s exactly why I made this video! Glad that you find it helpful.
Thank you for another song.
You’re welcome!

@@gwinupm 🙏🏻🎶🤗 Enjoyed soooo much! 🙋🏻
Amazing 🔥
Glad that you like it!
hello, I saw the F#, is this the key of G?
If you see an F# and only and F# in the key signature it is indeed the key of G (or relative minor Em). If you are talking about the F#m in the tittle of this video, then you are actually in the key with 3 sharps, which is A major or F#m. Hope this answers your question!
so that mean the Segovia scale is not in single key as I search about chords in the key of A, it should have C# minor and G# dininished. Im so confuse :(
Ahhh I see, I read the description and get it. Thank you so much 🎉
Guyana in the house ..
Hey hey..love it brother
Nice!
Hey which book I would’ve find this Scale’s notation? Thanks
I found them at this location: kings5messages.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/17297247-segovia-scales-for-classic-guitar.pdf. You can also purchase the notation at most of the places that sell sheet music, for example: www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/product/andres-segovia-6024279.html or www.amazon.com/s?k=segovia+diatonic+major+and+minor+scales&crid=37UCB548DU5IC&sprefix=Segovia+Diatonic+%2Caps%2C136&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_17
That helps a lot. Thanks and God Bless you.
Awesome, that is what I like to hear!
VERY GOOD
Thanks! I appreciate the positive comment. This is a hard piece and I don't always play it as well as I would like. Super cool tune! Andrew York is a badass
Thankyou from my heart. I'm 62yrs young starting out on my guitar journey. Can i ask a daft question sorry but why do you count 2 beats when the piece has 6.
6/8 refers to the amount of 8th notes in each measure, but not the beats or pulses you tap your foot to. Generally 6/8 is felt in two pulses made up of three 8th notes each, or you can think of it as 2 triplets. The fun part about 6/8 is it is also essentially 3/4 time and you can also feel it as 3/4 by splitting up the six 8th notes in three groups of 2. Hope that makes sense.
@@gwinupm Many thanks for your prompt reply. Keep up the great work.
Hello, glad to see that someone show this with metronome, what original tempo of this piece is for this kind of metronome?
Glad that you find it helpful. This piece can be played at several different tempos depending on how you like to play it and your skill level. I would suggest working towards at least 100 bpm for the dotted quarter note in 6/8 time. I have a video on my channel where I play this at tempo, and I put several links to other performers playing this piece in the video description to check out. They all are a bit different. Look up other players yourself and see what you like best. Clarity, control and musical expression are all more important than overall speed.
@@gwinupm thanks for the answer, keep up the good job

Awesome, I am happy that you found it useful, I really should do a more in depth breakdown of the piece sometime. Have fun learning this awesome piece of music!

brother can you give me the tab please ?
Sorry I don't have Tab for this piece of music. A great project for you would be to transcribe your own. Or its a great opportunity to learn to read music! All of Andrew's music is on his website, links in the pinned comment from me at the top of the comments. happy learning!

You’re terrific
Aw shucks man, thanks. I have worked hard for many years to become so, nice to hear.
Cool!
Glad you liked it! You really have to have good speakers or listen with headphones to get the best bass sound. Cheers!
Do you have a video tuitirual how to play this song??
I don't at the moment. Someday I would like to make more in depth walkthroughs of lots of the pieces I play on my channel, but I just don't have the time lately.
Nice interpretation ! Your guitar also sounds good. What model is it ?
I actually have no idea, there is not identification in it. All I know about it is the man who sold it to the store I bought it from got it in Spain in 1964. It is made out of Brazilian Rosewood which you cannot get anymore as it is an endangered hardwood. Took it to GSI in LA and they were not able to ID it either.
What's that?? It doesn't sound like Malaguena.
Hi there, thanks for your comment. In short, there are many different arrangements of malaguena out there and many different artists have created pieces of music called malaguena. The name comes from a region of southern Spain near Malaga and it refers originally to a Spanish folk song. Francisco Tarrega has a version, Ernesto Lecuona has a famous version, and there is this little beginner guitar version arranged by Sophocles Papas to name a few. If you want to do more research on the subject yourself, here are some wiki links to get you going. Hope that answers your question. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malague%C3%B1a, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A1laga
I believe I originally made this video for to help a student to pactice the piece at home.
Dankeschön für diese tolle Aufnahme, sie wird mir sehr helfen!
@@gwinupm Thanks for your reply. I play Sophocles Papa's arrangement of Lecuona's, which is also a basic one. 🙏

Where can one find the TABS for this piece. Thanks for this video!
I am glad that you found the video helpful. I don't know about any TABs for this piece, but you can purchase the sheet music directly from Andrew York at the following link. Support the artist directly! www.andrewyork.net/SheetMusicDownloads.html
Very good. Are you able to share the sheet music?
Hello, I did this a while back and created a trio version from the original solo guitar sheet music. Then my computer crashed and I lost the trio arrangement. The solo guitar version is pretty easy to find, try this link! www.academia.edu/19969803/Peter_Maxwell_Davies_Farewell_To_Stromness_guitar_sheet
Hi there, Is there an chance to find tabs for this?
Hi there, sorry it took so long to respond. I only have sheet music in notation for this, and don't know if it exists in TAB form somewhere. Not helpful I know! Thanks for the comment.
Thanks. I just started this piece and it helps to hear it slow. Everyone plays it blazing fast. Very nice.
Nice! That is precisely why I made this video, glad it is helping you out. Soon enough you will be one of those fast people yourself! 👍🎸
Nature can be wonderful if we treated fair. Well done thank you
What a lovely music! Excellent!
Glad that you enjoyed the video!
Awesome, I am learning this new piece but having difficulty on the fingerings but somehow can see your fingers movement swiftly moving which interest me more to learn it. Thanks
Thanks, I am glad that you enjoyed the video.
You typed it correctly in the paragraph, but 1:24 and 2:03 fade-in-fade-out-screen-video-text should read 2 octaves instead of 3, yes? Thanks to your good efforts, I noticed that the D melodic minor is different ascending compared to descending. I then researched by myself the explanation why, and now I understand the complexity and reasoning. All in all, I learned something new today thanks to you! Grateful! =)
Hi there Celeste Tam, thanks for your comment. Thanks for pointing out the typo, must have simply missed that when editing the video. As long as its correct in the description I won't bother to correct it in the video at this point. Very glad that you learned something from my channel! That is one of my main goals with the channel overall. So glad you find it useful. Let me know if there is anything else you would like to see or have questions about. Cheers! 🎸👍
great help. tx
Awesome! Glad you found these helpful.
Same
Gorgeous, bruv! No need to preface by saying this is a bit slower tempo. If this is your preferred interpretation, so be it, sounds amazing as is. Bravo 👏
Thanks for the kind comment. I made this video with the metronome to help one of my students practice at home. Here is a better representation of how it sounds if I am actually performing it. ua-cam.com/video/ErG9BUlWhFM/v-deo.html. Enjoy!
What were the metronome settings and for what beat? It sounded like the beat was on the eighth notes. Well played.
Hi there Ed, thanks for watching! If you look at the screen at 0:03 it lets you know what the bpm is after the name of the piece, then it fades away. The first time through is 60 bpm, and I count off the beats saying "one-and-two-and-three-and-four-and" with each click of the metronome. This indicates that I am indeed using the 8th note as the point of reference. At 5:45 I play the whole thing again at 90 bpm, again using the 8th note as the beat. I am glad that you found the video useful! Keep plucking!
